- Chapter 4 - Completely Off Track
“Is Ye Xingchen still in the room?” Immortal Venerable Wuji asked as he emerged from the array, pocketing his compass and looking at the approaching disciple.
“Rest assured, Master, we are watching him very closely. We will absolutely not let Little Junior Brother sneak out.” The disciple called his sword back to his side. He was not one of the Lingyun Peak disciples who had gone to welcome the bride. From their conversation, it appeared that Ye Xingchen was also deeply unsatisfied with this marriage.
However, that made sense. In the early stages of the novel, Ye Xingchen was still a pure, conservative young man. He naturally wanted to save his pristine primordial yang energy for his main wife, Liu Li’er.
Calculating the timeline, Liu Li’er would also arrive at the Xuantian Sword Sect in a few days. After all, when the number one sect recruited new disciples, various sect elders would send their own children to cultivate at the great sects, alongside candidates from prominent cultivation families. Although Liu Li’er was the daughter of the Hemen Sect Master, the Xuantian Sword Sect possessed far more spiritual veins, allowing one to cultivate with twice the results for half the effort. When it came to resources, the Hemen Sect simply could not compare.
There was a very important plot point here. The Xuantian Sword Sect recruited new disciples once every ten years. Anyone whose spiritual roots tested positive for talent at the age of ten could qualify for the assessment. If a candidate lacked that natural talent, they could only obtain qualification by receiving a recommended jade token from a sect elder, exactly like Rong Nianfeng.
During this process, all the disciples who passed the assessment could enter the Sword Tomb and release their spiritual energy, allowing the swords to choose their masters freely. If the disciples who had already entered the sect previously did not like their current weapons, they could also enter the Sword Tomb alongside the new disciples to find a more suitable match.
Unfortunately, the swords in the Sword Tomb were rather eccentric, and many of them preferred individuals with strong, unblemished primordial yang energy.
Ye Xingchen had suffered bad luck. A year ago, his sword had broken while he was searching for the thousand-year-old snow ganoderma with the other disciples in the Longyuan Secret Realm. He had planned to use the reopening of the Sword Tomb to go inside and find a replacement.
He never expected to be drugged by an inner disciple of the Corpse Puppet Pavilion. The drug trapped him and Liu Li’er in a room together where they could only stare at each other. Liu Li’er had already admired him for many years. Ultimately, at the height of passion, they succumbed to intimacy, and Ye Xingchen’s primordial yang energy was broken just like that.
Consequently, he failed to find any good weapon in the Sword Tomb. Of course, all of this was designed to ensure that he would obtain an immortal inheritance in an ancient secret realm three years later, where he would conveniently inherit an ancient divine sword.
It was truly an excessive amount of plot armor.
“You must keep a close eye on him. That kid has a lot of tricks up his sleeve. Do not be fooled by his current sickly state; the moment he gains a bit of energy, he will try to run,” Immortal Venerable Wuji instructed.
“Rest assured, Master. Little Junior Brother even coughed up a mouthful of blood this morning.”
“Vomiting blood is good. That way, he cannot go anywhere except lie in bed.”
Rong Nianfeng’s brow twitched. Why did the atmosphere of Lingyun Peak feel so strange?
Before he could sort out his chaotic thoughts, the topic shifted directly to him. “This is your Little Junior Brother’s Dao companion. Have Ye Xingchen come out to perform the wedding ceremony in a moment. Once they bow and complete the ceremony, lock the two of them inside the room, and our mission will be considered accomplished.”
Rong Nianfeng was stunned. Was it truly acceptable for them to say these things right in front of his face?
After another fifteen minutes, Rong Nianfeng felt himself being gently hoisted up by a hand and pulled out of the bridal sedan chair.
The young man from earlier said, “Junior Sister Nianxue, do not worry. I will take you to the front hall to perform the ceremony right away.”
Even though Rong Nianfeng stood at a tall height of one hundred and eighty centimeters, he was carried like a little chick in the disciple’s grip. The movement made him dizzy, so he hastily said, “Senior Brother, Senior Brother, I am not in a hurry.”
The shy, feminine voice reached the Eldest Senior Brother’s ears, making his heart race and his face flush. However, the movements of his hands grew even faster. Looking from a distance, one would think he was practicing a rapid movement technique. “Junior Sister Nianxue can just call me Eldest Senior Brother. Do not be embarrassed. I know you are anxious.”
Rong Nianfeng felt the wind rushing past his ears and was almost driven mad with anger. He finally understood that the people who were anxious were not him, but these disciples of Lingyun Peak.
A journey that should have taken over ten minutes was forcefully completed in a mere two minutes. Rong Nianfeng could only inhale deeply to steady his breathing. He had almost been walked to death before the wedding ceremony could even begin.
Before they entered the hall, he took the opportunity to gather information from the Eldest Senior Brother. “Eldest Senior Brother, I am a newcomer, and this place is completely unfamiliar to me. Having married over so suddenly, there are many things I do not understand. I do not even know what my husband’s personality is like or if he is easy to get along with.”
The novel The Cultivation Records of the Defiant Youth focused heavily on the satisfying face-slapping counterattacks of the protagonist in the later stages, while brushing over the early periods in just a few lines. He truly did not know what kind of disposition Ye Xingchen possessed at this point in time. He needed to scout out the enemy situation properly so he could devise a plan to cope.
The Eldest Senior Brother was usually a chatterbox, but he unexpectedly fell silent for a moment. Only after a long pause did he say, “He is a younger, fierce wolf dog type. You will certainly cherish him.”
Rong Nianfeng felt completely speechless. He constantly got the impression that the people of the Xuantian Sword Sect were mentally unstable, but he lacked the evidence to prove it.
Rong Nianfeng asked a few more indirect questions to probe for information. However, although this Eldest Senior Brother seemed unreliable, he proved to be incredibly cautious at this moment, giving vague answers to brush aside any difficult questions. Seeing that he could not extract any useful details, Rong Nianfeng finally abandoned his attempts to gather information.
After waiting for quite a long time, the person who was supposed to establish the marriage contract with him still had not arrived. Immortal Venerable Wuji could no longer sit still. He motioned to a disciple beside him and said, “The auspicious hour has arrived. Why has your Little Junior Brother not come yet? Go to the Yuxu Palace and check on him.”
“Your disciple obeys the command.”
Before the disciple could even step out of the front hall of Lingyun Peak, another disciple rushed in through the door and interrupted. Perhaps because he was in too much of a hurry, his voice trembled as he said, “Master, Little Junior Brother is gone!”
The hall fell into a dead silence. Immortal Venerable Wuji was so enraged that his mustache trembled, and his face turned bright red. “Rebellious disciple!”
As he spoke, his footsteps faltered due to his unstable stance. He leaned backward and quickly grabbed the chair to steady himself.
Some disciples wanted to step forward to support him, but he waved his hand and said, “It is no matter. With so many of you watching, you actually failed to stop a sickly invalid. If word of this gets out, people will think our Lingyun Peak is incompetent.”
The disciple cried out directly to express his grievance, clasping his hands as he reported, “Master, it is not as if you do not understand Little Junior Brother’s temperament. He actually used his internal energy to forcefully vomit blood all over the floor. When Second Senior Brother went to deliver his medicine, Little Junior Brother took advantage of his lack of vigilance, knocked him unconscious, changed into his clothes, and disguised his appearance. That was how he deceived our eyes.”
Immortal Venerable Wuji slammed the table and shouted, “This rebellious disciple’s boldness is truly growing out of bounds!”
“Master, if you had not forbidden Little Eleventh from speaking,” a gentle voice chimed in, the end of the sentence carrying a hint of amusement.
“Fourth Disciple!” Immortal Venerable Wuji barked a reprimand.
Rong Nianfeng was listening intently, but the sound was abruptly cut off in the next instant. He raised his brow slightly. He wondered what they were discussing that would cause Immortal Venerable Wuji to cast a soundproofing spell just to keep him from hearing it. This only made him more curious.
However, he could guess the general situation. It was likely that Ye Xingchen was completely devoted to Liu Li’er and refused to marry anyone else. He clicked his tongue inwardly, thinking that the protagonist was acting quite convincingly right now, making those who did not know the truth think he was a pure and devoted young man.
Unfortunately, since Rong Nianfeng held the script, he naturally knew that Ye Xingchen was only pretending to be half-reluctant. The cultivation world rumored him to be gentle and refined, but in reality, he added another member to his harem every time he completed a plot dungeon.
“Nianxue, today our Lingyun Peak has wronged you. Once we find that rebellious disciple, we will naturally make him apologize for his offense,” Immortal Venerable Wuji sighed, rising to step forward and patting Rong Nianfeng on the shoulder.
“Master,” Rong Nianfeng whimpered, appearing on the verge of tears. He acted completely delicate, soft, and harmless, gently raising his hand to wipe away non-existent tears beneath his bridal veil. “Since this is the case, there is no need to rush the Dao contract at this moment. I am willing to spend the rest of my life going through fire and water, using my warm heart to melt the icy exterior of Brother Xingchen, just so he might look at me more.”
In reality, he absolutely did not dare to establish this Dao contract. The main wife, Liu Li’er, was still waiting in the wings. If he signed it, wouldn’t he just be speeding up his own death?
Furthermore, he finally understood the context of the story now. A cultivator could only establish a Dao contract once in a lifetime unless their companion perished. In the original book, Ye Xingchen and Liu Li’er had already engaged in a private affair before Rong Nianxue even died.
After sorting out his thoughts, he did not forget to mock himself. He had never expected that a day would come when he would stoop to such dramatic measures just for the sake of his cultivation.
The front hall fell into an eerie silence for a long while. Rong Nianfeng panicked slightly, wondering if he had overacted. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he prepared to fabricate something else to say, but then he heard Immortal Venerable Wuji say in a choked voice, filled with tears, “Nianxue, what a good child!”
Rong Nianfeng and the rest of the disciples in the front hall were completely silenced by this reaction.
The Fourth Senior Brother’s mouth twitched as he remarked, “This future Dao companion of Little Eleventh is certainly unique.”
“Fourth Junior Brother, watch your words.” The individuals in the hall were communicating through transmission techniques. Even so, the Eldest Senior Brother was thoroughly startled. He looked up to ensure their Master had not noticed their small movements before letting out a sigh of relief.
“Since this is the case, we will trouble you to wait for now, Nianxue. Once your Senior Brothers and I find Ye Xingchen, we will have you two establish the contract.”
Just as the words left his mouth, a lazy voice echoed from outside the hall, speaking in a teasing manner. “There is no need, Master. I guessed that Ye Xingchen would most likely try to escape from the back mountain. I went to keep watch, and sure enough, I caught him and brought him back.”
With a clap of his hands, two outer disciples marched in, escorting a youth. Although the newcomer’s appearance could not be seen clearly, the sight of the bright red wedding robes made it obvious that this person was Ye Xingchen.
“Song Xiuyuan, how dare you deceive me!” Ye Xingchen broke free from the hands restraining him. Perhaps due to his anger, his pale face was flushed with a light pink color as he glared furiously at the speaker.
Song Xiuyuan did not respond. His fox-like eyes curved into a smile, making him look thoroughly harmless. “I even took some time out of my schedule to change Junior Brother into his wedding attire. I hope we have not missed the auspicious hour.”
Immortal Venerable Wuji hastily said, “Eleventh Disciple, it is not in vain that your Master dotes on you normally. You are the one who can be relied upon at the critical moment!”
The hall suddenly became lively, leaving only a completely bewildered Rong Nianfeng and a struggling, blood-vomiting Ye Xingchen out of place.
It was not until they were forcefully pressed together to complete the contract that everyone finally breathed a collective sigh of relief. Then, the two of them were seized and brought to the Yuxu Palace with lightning speed. With a loud slam, they were successfully locked inside the same room, followed by the voices echoing outside.
“Master has worked hard.”
“What hard work? Let us go drink wine!”
The group of people departed in a bustling rush.
The Fourth Senior Brother tilted his head to look at Song Xiuyuan, stroking his chin as he asked in confusion, “You normally do not mind these trivial matters. Why did you specifically go out to catch Little Eleventh today?”
After a long silence, Song Xiuyuan raised his brows and replied, “Because it is fun.”
Meanwhile, on the other side of the door, Rong Nianfeng was on the verge of a complete breakdown. He wondered how the plot could have veered entirely off course, and how he had ended up bound in a contract with Ye Xingchen.
