After Marrying the Evil God - Chapter 19
Xie Chouzhuan: “???”
The next day, Xie Chouzhuan crawled out of bed with an aching body, filled with grief and indignation. He simply couldn’t understand how he had fallen for it again.
“Why don’t you rest a bit longer?” Ji Sixian was sitting nearby, leafing through an ancient text. Seeing Xie Chouzhuan wake up, he walked over and reached out to touch his forehead. “No fever.”
Xie Chouzhuan glared at him. “You need to show some restraint in the future.”
Though it was called a glare, it was actually closer to acting spoiled. Ji Sixian was quite pleased by it. “I’ll try my best. However, frequent dual cultivation with me is beneficial for you; your spiritual energy has increased.”
Xie Chouzhuan performed an internal inspection and found that it was exactly as Ji Sixian had said; the spiritual energy in his body had become more solid, though it felt a bit “overstuffed.”
“This is a normal phenomenon. Your spiritual energy rose too quickly, and your body hasn’t adapted yet. You only need to meditate for a moment to resolve it.”
Caring for nothing else, Xie Chouzhuan sat quietly and meditated. After a moment, he was able to fully control the energy.
“Try the Spirit-Devouring Talisman I taught you last night again.”
He got out of bed, took a yellow talisman, and tried to draw the pattern from the night before. This time, there was much less friction, but the drawing was crooked and messy. Furthermore, the moment he finished, a burnt smell drifted from the paper, and it quickly turned into black ash.
Xie Chouzhuan tried several more times. After ruining over a dozen more pieces of paper, he finally managed to control his spiritual energy properly. Although the resulting talisman was still a bit wobbly, one could still feel the faint spiritual power residing on it.
“Not bad,” Ji Sixian offered a rare word of praise. “The technique is a bit unrefined, but it can be considered a success. Now, try drawing a talisman without injecting spiritual energy.”
“Alright.” Xie Chouzhuan tried drawing without using his power, and this time, he succeeded on the first try. He injected energy afterward to test it and found that the talisman was functional.
“Great, it worked!!” Xie Chouzhuan was beaming with excitement.
“Whether or not to inject power during the drawing process depends on personal habit. Most people choose to draw with spiritual energy to prepare them in advance so they can be activated instantly. Otherwise, if you take out a talisman that requires energy to activate during a mission, consuming your own reserves at that moment could very well cost you your life. However, if you have an abundance of spiritual energy, either method is fine.”
“But drawing with spiritual energy has a lower success rate and high requirements for energy control. Many beginners ruin hundreds of sheets without necessarily producing a single one.”
“I didn’t realize I was a genius.”
Over the next few days, whenever he wasn’t in class, Xie Chouzhuan stayed in the apartment researching various metaphysical topics and drawing talismans. He went from barely being able to produce one to becoming increasingly proficient.
As an Evil God, Ji Sixian generally had no duties to attend to. Consequently, during this period, he accompanied Xie Chouzhuan almost constantly, and the feelings between them intensified rapidly. An unspeakable rapport formed between them; with a single glance or movement from Xie Chouzhuan, Ji Sixian could guess exactly what he needed.
Before long, a call came from the Xie family. They were still worried about the marriage contract and feared something might go wrong on Xie Chouzhuan’s end, so they wanted to check in on the situation. When the screen lit up, Xie Chouzhuan’s familiar face appeared.
“I’m fine. Ji Sixian is very good to me.”
Hearing this, the members of the Xie family crowded around the camera, scrutinizing Xie Chouzhuan. Seeing his ruddy complexion, bright eyes, and good mental state, their racing hearts finally settled a bit.
At this point, Xi Yuyan asked with concern, “Have you two… already gotten married?”
Xie Chouzhuan turned to look at Ji Sixian, who was off-camera. The latter gave him a look, signaling for him to tell the truth. With Ji Sixian’s approval, Xie Chouzhuan nodded and replied, “Yes, just a few days ago.”
“Then have you run into ‘those things’ lately?” After all, given Xie Chouzhuan’s previous string of accidents, the family was always on edge.
Xie Chouzhuan shook his head. “No. Since being with Ji Sixian, I haven’t encountered that situation again.”
Hearing him say this, the Xie family felt greatly relieved. Xie Chaoding exhorted, “You must take good care of yourself out there. If you’re free during the holidays, come home and stay for a few days. Cough… if he’s willing, he can come back with you.”
Warmed by his family’s care, Xie Chouzhuan responded, “Okay.”
The Xie family didn’t pry into too many details. In their eyes, as long as their child could live safely and happily, that was more important than anything else. As for other matters, if Xie Chouzhuan wanted to share them in the future, they would be happy to listen.
Once he hung up the video call, Ji Sixian walked over and hugged him. “Why didn’t you let me be in the frame?”
“I wasn’t ready yet, and since I got married so suddenly, I want to give my family some time to accept it. If you’re willing, Brother, I’ll take you home to see them in the future.” Xie Chouzhuan gave him a reassuring kiss.
“Fine.” Ji Sixian was finally satisfied.
Although the Xie family was in Hua Ting, they were far from Hua University, and the capital was plagued by constant traffic jams. Additionally, since Xie Chouzhuan had been busy learning metaphysical arts, he discussed it with Ji Sixian and planned to head home during the long holiday instead.
As a freshman, classes weren’t very frequent. After studying for about a week, Xie Chouzhuan had mastered basic techniques and talismans. Ji Sixian helped him apply for a Metaphysical Practitioner rating on the occult website.
This website belonged to the internal network of the Metaphysical Society. After applying for a rating, one needed to undergo an assessment to determine their rank. Different ranks of practitioners could accept different levels of missions. The Society divided practitioner ranks into nine levels, while mission levels ranged from SSS to F, corresponding exactly to the ranks. Such an arrangement significantly reduced casualties among practitioners.
Shortly after Xie Chouzhuan applied for the assessment, his phone rang sharply. He picked it up to see that the caller was Liu Ci.
The moment he answered, before Xie Chouzhuan could speak, Liu Ci’s urgent voice came through: “I heard you’re taking the Metaphysical Society’s assessment? When did you learn the arts?”
Xie Chouzhuan explained, “He taught me.”
Hearing this, Liu Ci was stunned for a moment before laughing in realization. “So that’s it! I didn’t expect Mr. Ji to have such a deep understanding of human techniques. Impressive, Chouzhuan—you found a powerhouse for a husband!”
“Perfect timing. I have to go back to the Society tomorrow to handle some matters. Come with me; on the way, I can give you a detailed breakdown of the assessment criteria and things to watch out for.”
“Then I’ll have to trouble you, Brother Ci!” Xie Chouzhuan thanked him. He had almost no knowledge of this area, so having someone introduce it was naturally a good thing.
Liu Ci laughed heartily. “It’s a small matter.”
