After Marrying the Cold Omega in Secret - Chapter 83
Just as Chu Jin thought she was about to be hit by the car, she felt a strong push against her back.
The force sent her stumbling forward, her previously frozen legs finally reacting as she instinctively scrambled to the roadside.
At the same time, a sharp screech of brakes pierced the cold, silent air.
Only then did Chu Jin realize what had happened. She turned to look behind her at Chi Ye.
Though the driver had slammed on the brakes, the car had been moving too fast to stop in time.
And Chi Ye stood directly in its path.
Chu Jin’s pupils dilated in horror. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.
The world seemed to freeze, her mind blank with terror.
Yet, just as the car was about to plow into Chi Ye, the vehicle suddenly swerved.
The car missed Chi Ye by mere inches, speeding past so close that its side nearly brushed against her clothes.
The road was relatively empty, with few pedestrians or passing cars.
The vehicle disappeared around the corner in seconds, vanishing at high speed.
Chu Jin didn’t have time to think. Her legs weak, she turned and rushed toward Chi Ye, unaware of the cold tears streaking her cheeks.
She didn’t care, she just grabbed Chi Ye and pulled her to the side of the road.
Even after stopping, her entire body still trembled.
For that one moment, Chu Jin had thought she was going to die.
Then, after being pushed to safety, she thought Chi Ye would die instead.
The double shock left her mind reeling, unable to settle.
Chu Jin looked at Chi Ye, whose gaze was equally dazed. They spoke at the same time:
“Are you okay?”
After a brief silence, relief washed over them, the kind that comes after narrowly escaping death.
“Was that… Wan Qing?” Chu Jin asked, struggling to steady her breathing.
Hearing her guess, Chi Ye’s eyes flickered with surprise, but she didn’t question it. She simply nodded.
“Yeah.” Then, after a pause, she added, “She’s back.”
For safety, Chu Jin and Chi Ye decided to return to the Chi family home first.
Grandma and Chi Ye’s mother had already retired to their rooms, so the two went straight to Chi Ye’s suite.
Neither spoke the entire way. Only when the door closed behind them did Chu Jin suddenly pull Chi Ye into a tight embrace.
“Don’t ever do that again,” Chu Jin said hoarsely, holding her even tighter as if trying to fuse them together.
Chi Ye had risked her life to push her out of danger. If Wan Qing hadn’t swerved at the last second, Chi Ye would have…
Chu Jin couldn’t bear to finish the thought.
Chi Ye wrapped her arms around Chu Jin’s waist in return, resting her chin against her shoulder.
“I’m sorry. It’s all my fault,” she murmured, her voice low and rough with guilt.
Hearing this, Chu Jin immediately pulled back, gripping Chi Ye’s shoulders and locking eyes with her.
“This isn’t your fault. You don’t need to apologize.”
“She was targeting me,” Chi Ye said, her gaze dark and unreadable. “She hates me, so she went after you.”
“Because of me, you almost—”
“I’m calling the police,” Chu Jin cut in, her voice rising with anger. “This was attempted murder!”
She reached for her phone in her bag.
“I’m reporting this now—”
“It’s no use.”
Chi Ye’s words stopped her cold.
Her gaze was indifferent, her tone like the thin mist of an autumn morning cold and distant.
She closed her eyes briefly, and when she opened them again, her expression had regained its composure.
“I’ll have He Xian arrange a safe place for you to stay in a while,” Chi Ye said softly. “You can stay there for some time.”
“What about you?” Chu Jin asked.
“Don’t worry about me.” Chi Ye shook her head. “Once this period—”
“I don’t agree.” Chu Jin cut her off decisively, her eyes fixed on Chi Ye. “Either we leave together, or we face this together.”
Seeing her resolute expression, Chi Ye’s voice grew urgent. “But she’ll hurt you!”
Chu Jin: “I’m not afraid.”
“But I am.”
Chi Ye’s voice was quiet, yet laden with deep emotion.
After all, this was already the second time something like this had happened.
Before, during the variety show, Chu Jin had nearly drowned. This time, she had almost been hit by a car and each time, the other party had been intent on killing her.
This time, Chi Ye was truly terrified.
The harrowing scene at the intersection still played vividly in her mind.
Chu Jin had almost died right before her eyes.
So she couldn’t leave Chu Jin exposed to danger again.
Chu Jin could see the turmoil in Chi Ye’s heart.
She didn’t argue further. Instead, she silently retrieved an envelope from her bag.
Then, she handed it to Chi Ye.
“After I left earlier, Jiang Xu contacted me and returned these two letters to me,” Chu Jin said. “She had secretly kept them back then.”
“So neither of us ever received the other’s final letter.”
A flicker of surprise passed through Chi Ye’s eyes as she slowly reached out and took the envelope.
She opened the letter she had never received.
“So back then, it wasn’t that I deliberately stood you up, nor that I didn’t want to see you,” Chu Jin explained.
It was just that their last letters to each other had missed their mark, like parallel lines that never intersected.
Chi Ye’s eyes dimmed slightly, and for a long moment, she couldn’t speak.
After a lengthy pause, Chu Jin continued, “And yet, despite carrying this misunderstanding, you still walked toward me without hesitation.”
The moment she stepped out of the café, Chu Jin had pieced everything together.
Back then, when Chi Ye was sent abroad, she had asked Yan Sisi to approach Chu Jin before leaving. That was why, when Chu Jin was pressured by her family to date, she had entered that three-year relationship devoid of any real feelings, yet one that had shielded her from their demands.
Later, when Chi Ye returned, Yan Sisi had broken up with her, and she had entered into a contract with Chi Ye. No matter how absurd the terms of that contract were, Chi Ye had never truly made things difficult for her.
“I was the one who chose to give up back then. But you didn’t.” Chu Jin’s voice tightened, a faint sob creeping into her words.
Yet her eyes burned with unwavering determination.
“So this time, I won’t leave either.”
Chi Ye clutched the letter, the edges crumpling under the pressure of her fingers.
Slowly, she lifted her gaze.
The corners of her eyes were tinged with red, her lashes glistening with unshed tears.
A haze had settled over her eyes, veiling the sorrow beneath.
Heart aching, Chu Jin pulled her into an embrace, gently stroking the back of her head.
“We’re married now. No matter what happens, we should face it together, okay?”
When Chi Ye didn’t respond, Chu Jin waited a moment before asking again, her voice tender and patient. “Okay? Wifey.”
Her tone was impossibly soft, like a feather gently brushing against Chi Ye’s heart, soothing the storm of emotions within.
After what felt like an eternity, a muffled reply finally came.
“Okay.”
–
“Submerged” was approaching its finale, and the production team was still conducting their final marketing push. As a result, both Chu Jin and Chi Ye had been invited to record promotional videos over the following days, occasionally even doing live streams.
Everything seemed to be returning to normal.
Wan Qing had not reappeared, as if the incident on the road days before had been nothing more than a dream.
Work and life continued smoothly.
Later, Chu Jin even auditioned and successfully landed a role in a film.
It was a project by a renowned domestic director, slated for theatrical release. Securing this role had been no easy feat, she had fought tooth and nail for it.
Most importantly, this time, there was no external influence from Chi Ye. She had earned the role purely through her own acting skills.
It was the best proof of her abilities, making this day worth celebrating.
Chu Jin received the news of her successful audition at the company and immediately booked a restaurant, sending the location to Chi Ye.
Then, she headed down to the underground parking garage to retrieve her car and drive there.
The company building was an old structure with years of wear, so the underground parking garage wasn’t in the best condition.
Dim lighting, damp and chilly air walking alone through it always sent a shiver down her spine.
Chu Jin always quickened her pace.
But just as she was nearing her car, she suddenly heard a horn blare from across the garage, followed by the revving of an engine.
The roar was especially jarring in the empty space, like a ruthless beast lying in wait, ready to pounce at any moment and deliver a fatal strike with its gaping maw.
Because of her past experience, Chu Jin instinctively tensed and looked up.
The car was facing her directly, and despite the poor lighting, she recognized it immediately.
It was Wan Qing’s car!
Seeing her look up, the driver even flashed the headlights deliberately.
A taunting greeting.
Though she had anticipated Wan Qing’s reappearance at any moment, facing the same scenario again still sent a ripple of dread through her.
She moved toward a nearby pillar, positioning herself so she could dodge if the car suddenly accelerated toward her.
At least then, she’d have somewhere to take cover.
But the moment she stepped closer, she heard a faint rustling from the shadows behind her.
The next instant, a hand clamped over her mouth and nose from behind.
The grip was strong. Chu Jin struggled with all her might, but her body refused to obey, she couldn’t muster any strength, her limbs going limp as cotton.
Then, her consciousness plunged into endless darkness.
