- Chapter 58 - Money Pit (or 'Gold Swallower')
After discussing with Jiang Zhi, Ji Fanghuai finally decided on a hollow diamond ring. The diamond was securely set on the base, and the band was formed by the intertwined curves of two flowing arcs, symbolizing their two lives extending yet merging into one. The entire ring was full of beauty and significance.
Later, while Jiang Zhi was finalizing the details with the designer, Ji Fanghuai went to open a can for Xixi and found the cat constantly rolling on the carpet.
Its posture was seductive, and its meows were alluring.
Unfortunately, it was a male cat.
Ji Fanghuai thought it was just being playful, so she took out her phone to film Xixi’s antics, intending to lightly edit it for a short video, as she hadn’t posted anything in a long time. However, the more she filmed, the more she felt something was wrong.
“Jiang Zhi, come look quickly.”
Jiang Zhi hurried over and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Ji Fanghuai stroked Xixi’s head to comfort it and said, “Look, is Xixi in heat?”
Jiang Zhi was suspicious. “That shouldn’t be possible, it was spayed a long time ago.”
Ji Fanghuai found it even stranger. “Then what is it doing? It seems to want me to rub its belly.”
Jiang Zhi squatted down and petted Xixi. She noticed the meowing intensified when she touched its belly. She wasn’t too sure either and frowned, saying, “Logically, it shouldn’t be in heat after being spayed. It might be unwell.”
“Is it sick?” Ji Fanghuai worried.
Jiang Zhi pulled out her phone and searched. Her expression darkened. She repeatedly felt the cat’s belly and said, “Let’s take it to the vet for an X-ray first. An online doctor suggests it might have eaten something it shouldn’t have, and now that object might be stuck in its rectum, blocking its bowel movement.”
Ji Fanghuai tentatively touched Xixi’s lower abdomen and found the cat was meowing as if it was about to roll on the spot from pain. It must be hurting badly.
She carefully picked up Xixi and wondered, “What do you think it ate that it shouldn’t have? Cat hair? Or does Xixi have pica?”
Jiang Zhi thought for a moment and said, “I think it might be your ring. The symptoms look very similar, but we still need an examination to be sure.”
“The ring?” Ji Fanghuai affectionately rubbed Xixi. She had searched for so long. Thinking the cat’s bed was far away, she didn’t check there, believing there was no way the cat would go there.
Xixi was truly a “gold-swallowing beast.”
The two changed their clothes and took Xixi to the pet hospital. After the X-ray, the vet adjusted his glasses and said, “It definitely ate something it shouldn’t have. Judging by the shape, it looks like a ring. Is the ring you lost a diamond ring or just a band?”
Ji Fanghuai said, “A platinum band, no setting.”
The vet replied, “Then it’s fine. No need to worry about scraping the intestinal wall. I’ll give it some laxatives in a bit. With a little effort, it should pass it.”
Ji Fanghuai was speechless.
Did she have to stand guard by the litter box?
While the doctor was treating Xixi, Ji Fanghuai felt both amused and heartbroken that Xixi had swallowed her ring. She said to Jiang Zhi, “Do you think if we don’t watch it, Xixi might poop the ring out and then swallow it again?”
Jiang Zhi glanced at her playfully and said, “Don’t worry, Xixi wouldn’t be that silly.”
Ji Fanghuai suspected Xixi would be that silly, otherwise, why would it have swallowed her ring? And she didn’t even know when it happened.
After the doctor administered the laxative to Xixi, they waited for it to take effect. If it didn’t work, a small surgery would be necessary.
Fortunately, thanks to the doctor’s ingenious methods, the ring successfully emerged from the “chrysanthemum” (rectum). The doctor briefly disinfected the ring and sealed it in a bag. At this point, Xixi’s meows were faint and listless.
The two didn’t get home until the middle of the night.
After returning, Ji Fanghuai wasn’t in a rush to sleep. While Jiang Zhi was settling Xixi, she put on gloves and followed an online video, using cleaner to sterilize the ring until it looked exactly as it did when she first wore it.
She found a jewelry box and said, “I think I’ll just keep it enshrined.”
Jiang Zhi stood by, amused. “Didn’t you like this ring the most? Why won’t you wear it?”
Ji Fanghuai did genuinely like the ring, especially because of its unique significance. Unfortunately, the ring had just taken a trip through Xixi’s digestive system. Though she wasn’t a germaphobe, she couldn’t help but feel a little uncomfortable.
She put on a straight face. “Nonsense. The one I like the most is you.”
Jiang Zhi’s eyes were smiling. “What a coincidence, me too.”
Ji Fanghuai’s face was flushed as she placed the ring into the jewelry box.
She figured she probably wouldn’t ever wear this ring in her lifetime.
Jiang Zhi said, “Let’s go to sleep. We’re going to Grandma’s house tomorrow morning.”
Ji Fanghuai replied, “Okay.”
When she woke up in the morning, Ji Fanghuai was still sleepy. The original plan was to leave Xixi at home since there was an automatic feeder and a monitor, and they would be back quickly.
However, after Xixi swallowed her ring and was now exhausted, when it saw Ji Fanghuai about to leave it behind, it let out a truly miserable cry.
Ji Fanghuai reluctantly said, “Let’s take it with us.”
Jiang Zhi put Xixi into the pet carrier. Xixi was very experienced with travel, lying quietly without any fuss. It was Ji Fanghuai who felt a bit dizzy.
Jiang Zhi’s chest, after Ji Fanghuai’s meticulous care overnight, was no longer very sore when she woke up; at least she could dress normally.
Ji Fanghuai leaned on Jiang Zhi’s shoulder, playing with her hair. “What should I do? I’m still nervous.”
She was still very afraid of a difficult confrontation with Grandma.
She didn’t want Jiang Zhi to be put in a difficult position.
Jiang Zhi comforted her. “Just maintain your composure. Treat her as an ordinary elder, not my grandma, and not your grandma, just a regular old lady.”
Ji Fanghuai wished she could see her as just a regular old lady.
Jiang Zhi continued, “Besides, no matter how fierce Grandma is, she won’t eat you. You just need to act all pitiful, looking like I bully you terribly every day. When Grandma sees that, her heart will soften, and she won’t make things difficult for you.”
Ji Fanghuai was half-skeptical. “Is it that simple?”
The situation at Grandma’s house was different this time. Compared to the last visit, it was noticeably much warmer. It was unclear what kind of pressure Jiang Zhi had applied, but the uncle (Shen Jing’s father) was particularly enthusiastic, and the aunt was also very attentive, asking about her well-being.
Seeing Ji Fanghuai holding the cat the entire time, the aunt said, “Your little fellow is really clingy.”
Ji Fanghuai hadn’t seen the aunt last time, and even if she had, she wouldn’t have recognized her. She said, “I was worried about leaving it alone at home, so I have to take it wherever I go. I apologize for the trouble, Auntie.”
The aunt smiled. “No trouble at all. The old lady also keeps a tabby cat. It’s quite plump. They can keep each other company, and feeding and housing them will be easy.”
Ji Fanghuai was still afraid the two cats would fight, so she personally accompanied the aunt to settle Xixi.
Xixi was timid around strangers, either refusing to get down from Ji Fanghuai’s arms or hiding in its bed, afraid to come out.
Ji Fanghuai stayed with it for a while longer.
Meanwhile, on the other side.
“Xiao Zhi, how did you get so thin? Did she not take good care of you?” The old lady heard that Jiang Zhi and Ji Fanghuai had already registered their marriage. She had been strongly against the union, but upon hearing that Jiang Zhi had attempted suicide over the relationship, and since all elders just want their descendants to be happy, how could she dare interfere any further? Still, she didn’t have much affection for Ji Fanghuai.
Jiang Zhi sat across from the old lady, worried that Ji Fanghuai wasn’t handling things well, and said, “The doctor wouldn’t let me eat.”
She explained the doctor’s instructions.
The old lady was in good spirits recently and said, “The doctor is right. You young people suffer the consequences when you don’t eat properly. When we were young, we were either starving or full, not like you all today constantly thinking about dieting.”
Jiang Zhi hadn’t been thinking about dieting. Her purpose for talking to her grandmother first wasn’t about this, so she immediately gathered her emotions and said, “Grandma is right. After my parents passed away, you are the closest person to me.”
The old lady, recalling the pain of a parent outliving their children, got teary-eyed. “Your parents…”
Jiang Zhi seized the opportunity. “Now that Fanghuai and I are married, I hope to receive your blessing, not hardship. You know what kind of person Fanghuai is.”
The old lady sighed. “I know she’s a good child. Does she still not remember you?”
Jiang Zhi’s spirits were low. “No, she doesn’t.”
The old lady patted Jiang Zhi’s hand. “Oh, I promise I won’t make things difficult for her. Where is she now? I didn’t get a good look at her last time she visited.”
Jiang Zhi smiled. “She’s afraid you dislike her, so she’s scared to see you.”
The old lady feigned anger. “I’m seventy or eighty years old! Am I going to eat her? Go call her over quickly.”
When Ji Fanghuai saw the old lady again, she noticed a complete change in her attitude. The old lady was quite endearing. As soon as she saw her, she said, “I’m old, and my eyesight isn’t good. I didn’t really see you last time you came. Now I must take a good look.”
Ji Fanghuai quickly said, “It was my fault. I didn’t get close enough for Grandma to see clearly.”
The old lady didn’t dwell on her mentioning the past and went back inside to rummage through things, eventually giving her a jade green bracelet. She said, “This bracelet is an heirloom of our Shen family. It brings peace and safety. Both of you had a tumultuous year last year. Take it.”
Ji Fanghuai respectfully accepted it. “Thank you, Grandma.”
The old lady then chatted with them for a long time, all the typical concerns an elder has for the younger generation, calling them “good children” repeatedly. This attention made Ji Fanghuai feel overwhelmed and touched.
Since waking up, she hadn’t experienced the warmth of family, and she was moved. She secretly clasped Jiang Zhi’s pinky finger.
Unexpectedly, the old lady’s tone suddenly shifted. She stopped calling them “good children” and instead wanted them to have a child. She said, “When are you two planning to have a child?”
Ji Fanghuai’s mind exploded.
They had just gotten married and hadn’t even had formal sexual intercourse yet.
