After I Transmigrated into the Novel, I made the Heroine Fall for Me - Chapter 61
Xu Huanhuan quickly took a step back and hurried over to Director Xu to ask him.
“Old Xu, when can the contract be ready?”
Director Xu replied, “My assistant will deliver it this afternoon. No rush.”
Xu Huanhuan nodded and was about to walk past Yun Yifan when he suddenly reached out and grabbed her.
She looked at Yun Yifan in confusion, as if asking, What’s the matter?
“What did you just say? I didn’t hear you clearly,” Yun Yifan insisted, gripping her slender arm with a frown.
Though he was asking about her words, his mind was silently assessing her. Was she too thin? He could barely feel any flesh beneath his grasp.
After a few seconds of stunned silence, Xu Huanhuan finally remembered what she had said. “Huh? I asked if you weren’t going to comfort your little cousin?” The girl had run off crying didn’t he feel the slightest urge to go after her?
Yun Yifan answered without hesitation, “No need. She’s not a three-year-old child. No point in comforting her.” She ought to learn the harsh realities of life maybe then she wouldn’t act so spoiled.
“Aren’t you afraid she’ll be upset?” Xu Huanhuan fell into an odd silence before asking curiously.
Shouldn’t he be comforting her, as a general rule?
“Upset? Then would you feel upset?” Yun Yifan blurted out without thinking.
“Me? Probably, yeah.” Xu Huanhuan pointed at herself, thought for a moment, and nodded.
“Mm.” Yun Yifan nodded as if he had just understood something profound, which made Xu Huanhuan feel strange.
What’s with the ‘mm’? Shouldn’t you be rushing off to comfort her now?
Just as the awkward silence between them stretched on, Director Xu called out.
“Xu Huanhuan, let’s go home for dinner.”
“Oh, okay.” Xu Huanhuan glanced at her still-captured hand. Seeing that Yun Yifan had silently released it, she quickly followed Director Xu.
Yun Yifan trailed half a step behind them as they headed downstairs after all, the parking garage was in the same direction.
Once they reached the parking lot, Xu Huanhuan waved goodbye to Yun Yifan before getting into the car.
Yun Yifan stood by his car for a long time, seemingly lost in thought.
Secretary Chen, sitting in the driver’s seat, rolled down the window and asked in confusion, “Boss? Aren’t you getting in?” Didn’t he still have a meeting to attend? Otherwise, why had he been in such a hurry earlier?
After a long pause, Yun Yifan suddenly spoke. “Tell me, do all girls need to be comforted?”
“Huh? Boss, I can’t answer that, I don’t have a girlfriend.” Secretary Chen scratched his head, utterly bewildered.
In his experience, comforting girls was usually the boyfriend’s job. As a workaholic who followed his boss on business trips all the time, when would he have had the chance to get a girlfriend?
Yun Yifan gave Secretary Chen a long, contemplative look, as if regretting his decision to ask someone who had been single since birth.
Secretary Chen: Thanks, I feel attacked.
If this weren’t his boss, Secretary Chen might have pointed out that Yun Yifan himself had been single for over a decade longer than him so, who was he to judge?
But as a professional secretary, Secretary Chen could only smile through the absurdity and wait for his boss’s momentary lapse to pass.
Yun Yifan stood by the car’s rear door, his well-defined fingers gripping the handle. He pulled hard but it didn’t budge.
Expressionless, he said, “Unlock the rear door.”
At least I didn’t pull too hard.
My hand hurts a little.
Sitting in the car, Yun Yifan absentmindedly rubbed his wrist while asking, “How much time is left before the meeting starts?”
“About thirty minutes. We’ll make it,” Secretary Chen replied smoothly as he started the car.
“Wake me when we arrive,” Yun Yifan said before closing his eyes to rest.
“Understood, boss.”
High-end Western restaurant.
Shen Lixie sat across from Fang Qingying, leisurely cutting into his steak with a knife and fork. “How did the audition go?”
“I passed,” Fang Qingying said, spearing a piece of bright green broccoli with her fork and taking a bite. “By the way, where’s Xiaotian?”
It had been a while since she last saw Gao Tian. Had she taken leave?
“Xiaotian?” Shen Lixie took a sip of red wine. “I think she took leave to collect her graduation certificate from school?”
Though his expression briefly flickered with something complicated when mentioning the school, as long as it didn’t involve Fang Qingying, Shen Lixie didn’t bother with other people’s business.
“Oh,” Fang Qingying responded, biting into a cherry tomato before grumbling, “Why do you get such a lavish meal while I’m stuck with greens?”
Just look at the medium-rare steak across from her, steaming and tantalizing. Paired with red wine and a plate of spaghetti, it looked like a work of art.
And her?
Nothing but salad.
Fang Qingying frowned. “Wasn’t I supposed to only eat salad for dinner? Why am I having it for lunch too?”
She suddenly didn’t want to be a celebrity anymore. Being a star meant managing time and maintaining an image.
“Do you have any self-awareness about what you’ve been eating lately and whether you’ve been working out?” Shen Lixie glanced at her, displeasure evident in his tone.
Fang Qingying opened her mouth but immediately felt guilty and obediently continued eating her salad.
Lately, she really hadn’t exercised, surviving on takeout every day, and her weight had skyrocketed.
Especially after indulging in multiple cups of bubble tea, successfully contributing to her weight gain.
“After this, go home and wait for the filming schedule. And make sure to drop some weight,” Shen Lixie instructed.
The role of ‘Flower Palace Mistress’ required beauty and skill.
It was best not to gain too much weight. If she ended up looking bad on camera, she’d have to go through forced weight loss, which wasn’t healthy.
Fang Qingying endured Shen Lixie’s nagging like a mother’s scolding through lunch before returning to her apartment, exhausted and irritated.
Sighing as she unlocked the door, she muttered, “Xie-ge is great at everything except for his lecturing.”
When she opened the door, the apartment was spotless, as if untouched by dust.
Fang Qingying was slightly stunned. Had a fairy godmother visited her home?
But the note stuck on the fridge made it clear, it wasn’t a fairy godmother but her dear wife.
The colorful note read: Gu Shengxiao has returned to the set for filming and might not be back for a while. Take care of yourself.
Tucking the note into her pocket, Fang Qingying rubbed her chin, deep in thought.
Should she visit the set?
What should she do if she went?
With that in mind, she pulled out her phone and messaged Shen Lixie.
Fang Qingying: Xie-ge, what should I do if I want to visit someone on set?
Shen Lixie: ?
Shen Lixie: Whose set?
Shen Lixie: Gu Shengxiao’s?
Fang Qingying had only sent one message, but Shen Lixie reacted as if facing a major crisis, firing off three in response.
She blinked, showing no surprise that Shen Lixie knew the person she was going to visit was Gu Shengxiao.
Her fingertip tapped lightly on the phone screen.
Fang Qingying: Yes, it’s her.
Shen Lixie: When are you two planning to go public? I need time to prepare.
Fang Qingying: I definitely won’t get caught!
Shen Lixie: …
Shen Lixie: I’ll help you order the care package.
Shen Lixie: Just show up yourself.
Fang Qingying: Okay, thanks, Brother Xie.
After sending the messages, Fang Qingying tucked her phone away and headed into her room to pick out an outfit for the visit. After rummaging for a while, she settled on a white puff-sleeved short-sleeved top and a beige knee-length skirt. Mask on, she swung her car keys and stepped out.
Parked downstairs were three or four cars, all birthday gifts from Fang Qingyu.
The filming location had already been sent to her by Shen Lixie, and with navigation, she wasn’t worried about getting lost.
Meanwhile, over at Gao Tian’s side.
The university campus was bustling with people. Holding her bright red graduation certificate, Gao Tian found herself cornered in a stairwell.
“What’s the matter?” She looked up at the girl wearing thick-framed glasses and asked.
“You lied to me,” the bespectacled girl bit her lip, her voice soft and pitiful, like someone who’d been terribly wronged.
“I did no such thing,” Gao Tian retorted irritably. “You’re the one who lied first. You promised you weren’t working part-time.”
As she spoke, her gaze lingered on the other’s glasses, growing increasingly annoyed.
She’d never imagined the girl could be so cunning, what a joke that she’d been played like a fool.
“ I didn’t, I never meant to lie to you,” the girl stammered, her voice shrinking under Gao Tian’s disdainful glare.
“Lin Zhiya, we’re done here.” Rubbing her temples, Gao Tian tried to push past her.
“You said you wouldn’t.” The girl Lin Zhiya clutched Gao Tian’s arm anxiously, her voice tight.
Gao Tian studied her innocent expression before reaching out and removing her glasses. Staring at the face she’d seen not long ago, she asked slowly, “Then what should I call you? Xiao Lin?”
That’s right, the girl standing before her was Gu Shengxiao’s assistant, Xiao Lin.
“I didn’t mean to hide it from you,” Xiao Lin, Lin Zhiya shook her head. “Can you just let me explain?”
She was naturally introverted, always hiding behind thick glasses and long hair that obscured most of her face.
In class, hardly anyone recognized her with her hair tied up and glasses off including Gao Tian.
When she first saw Gao Tian beside Fang Qingying, she’d been terrified of being recognized. But the carefree Gao Tian never seemed to pay much attention to her appearance.
For reasons of her own, she hadn’t dared to reveal herself to Gao Tian. Yet today, while picking up her graduation certificate, Gao Tian had spotted her stepping out of Yu Lu’s car.
Before she could explain, Gao Tian had turned and walked away, leaving her in a cold sweat.
“Explanations are just excuses, and excuses are admissions of guilt,” Gao Tian scoffed. “Move. I’m leaving.”
“Then I’ll go with you,” Lin Zhiya blurted out.
Gao Tian looked at her flustered face and ultimately couldn’t bring herself to stay too angry. “And what’s your excuse this time?”
Lin Zhiya stammered, “Your birthday was coming up. I wanted to take on a part-time job.” Little did she expect that after catching Yu Lu’s eye, she’d end up staying by Gu Shengxiao’s side, a stint that lasted a year or two.
“So my birthday lasted two whole years?” Gao Tian unconsciously raised her voice to express her displeasure.
“After that, I didn’t dare bring it up again,” Lin Zhiya shrunk her neck slightly, still vividly remembering how harshly Gao Tian had scolded her that birthday night.
She hadn’t dared to speak up back then, and now that they’d suddenly run into each other, how could she possibly bring it up?
What she feared most was exactly this kind of situation.
“Heh, I feel like I’ve been dating thin air,” Gao Tian shrugged, her tone icy.
