- Chapter 5 - Disguise
How could she swallow something that big?
Immediately, she was reminded of that dark, lumpy pill, and she clamped her hand over her mouth.
Xie Jinzhi rushed into the restroom in fright, and soon Tang Shuxia heard the sound of retching coming from inside. She glanced casually at the time on her phone, guessing that her agent would need some time to adjust, so she simply sat down on the sofa and picked up a magazine from the coffee table.
This time, she opened a food magazine. The magazine featured local specialties and signature dishes from various places, even friendly rating them with stars. The colorful pictures and text made the food look so real that the aroma seemed to leap off the page. Every time Tang Shuxia turned a page, she licked her lips, “This looks good, I must try it.”
Half an hour later, Xie Jinzhi walked out of the restroom looking weak, staring indignantly at the woman sitting lazily and leisurely on the sofa reading the magazine. “Tang Shuxia, what on earth did you give me to eat? Why can’t I stop throwing up? How long are you going to be crazy?”
Tang Shuxia put down the magazine and seriously examined her, “How do you feel?”
Xie Jinzhi suddenly dropped her usual “good sister” demeanor and unleashed her “cold sarcasm” skills on Tang Shuxia, “Ha, you actually have the nerve to ask how I feel? Let me tell you, it felt absolutely disgusting, like eating literal crap. And all your mess instead of fixing your own problems, you just dump the mess on me, what’s that supposed to mean? All of you just yell at me; I’m your punching bag, but I’m also a human with dignity. Let me tell you… holy crap!”
Mid-sentence, Xie Jinzhi exclaimed “holy crap” and, under Tang Shuxia’s half-smiling watch, quickly covered her mouth, horrified that she had been so vulgar in front of her artist. Especially since she had just blurted out all the frustrations that had been building up inside her.
Tang Shuxia didn’t mind her words at all in fact, she was quite satisfied. “It seems you’ve been quite dissatisfied with me for a long time.”
Xie Jinzhi shook her head repeatedly, “I’m anxious, truly anxious. That CEO at the company said they’re only giving you three days. If you don’t step forward in three days to give the public an explanation, the company will release a statement on your behalf, and then your acting career will be completely over. Can you accept that outcome?”
“I truly regret it. I shouldn’t have taken that awful drama for you back then; otherwise, you wouldn’t have met that bastard Cheng Zeyu.”
Tang Shuxia believed everything Xie Jinzhi said was true, “Three days? That’s more than enough.”
Xie Jinzhi, “W-what?”
Tang Shuxia suddenly asked, “What is the password to your bank card with the largest balance?”
Xie Jinzhi blurted out, “361875.”
After saying it, she gasped twice and quickly covered her mouth, afraid that if the other person asked another strange question, she might spill out the color of her underwear without anyone else needing to expose it. However, Xie Jinzhi quickly realized that this abnormal behavior started after taking that strange thing. “What kind of candy did you give me just now?”
Tang Shuxia gave her an encouraging look, like a promising student, and tossed her phone over, “Alright, help me set up a meeting with that scum, Cheng Zeyu.”
Xie Jinzhi’s first reaction was, No way I can arrange a meeting.
She had once asked an influential senior in the industry to pass a message to Mu Yingying’s agent, but it went nowhere. The other agent probably looked down on her as a minor agent, not even bothering to send a rejection being ignored is sometimes more humiliating than being rejected. But facing Tang Shuxia’s questioning gaze, she gritted her teeth and tactfully said, “You two are a hot topic right now. Gossip columnists are watching your every move like vultures eyeing a bone. I think the probability of getting Cheng Zeyu to agree to meet is very low.”
Tang Shuxia, “Oh.”
Xie Jinzhi, “…”
Is she disheartened?
Don’t be!
Xie Jinzhi anxiously tapped her head with her phone, “Don’t worry, don’t worry, let me think of a way.”
Tang Shuxia glanced at Xie Jinzhi, who was frantically pacing like an ant on a hot pan, “Just deliver these two sentences to him, and he will agree to the appointment.”
Xie Jinzhi, “What sentences?”
Tang Shuxia lowered her crossed legs, full of confidence, “I know your secret.”
Xie Jinzhi, “?”
Tang Shuxia smiled, “The address.”
Xie Jinzhi, “??”
Tang Shuxia happily clapped her hands and went upstairs. She winked at Xie Jinzhi, “Waiting for your good news!”
Xie Jinzhi, “???”
It took Xie Jinzhi a while to follow Tang Shuxia’s train of thought. Fortunately, she hadn’t deleted Cheng Zeyu’s WeChat ID in a fit of anger. She quickly found the contact among Tang Shuxia’s friends and typed out the message word-for-word before hitting send. Surprisingly, he hadn’t blocked her; his status was still ‘friend’ even after everything that had happened online.
With no time to ponder the intricacies, she quickly attached the meeting location.
Right after sending the message, a video call popped up on the screen. Xie Jinzhi’s hand trembled so much she almost dropped the phone. She quickly declined the video call. However, she was fast to decline, but the other party was even faster to redial, persistently calling over ten times.
Xie Jinzhi simply threw the phone onto the sofa and ignored it. She waited and waited until the phone finally went quiet. Then, she picked it up to check again and saw a withdrawn message.
Fuzefangyi (Blessing from One’s Fortune): Fine.
The matter had been resolved surprisingly smoothly. Xie Jinzhi excitedly ran upstairs to tell Tang Shuxia the good news, but when she reached the second floor, she realized there were too many rooms and she had no idea where Tang Shuxia had gone. She thought that since Tang Shuxia was a guest, she must be staying in a guest room, so she started knocking on the rooms at the far end, gently tapping, “Shuxia.”
Tap, tap-tap.
Accompanying her knocking, the sound of high heels striking the floor echoed in the hallway. Xie Jinzhi straightened up and saw that the door to the largest bedroom in the middle was open. A tall, slender figure walked out. She was wearing a mermaid-style gown that looked like she was heading to an important event. However, when she clearly saw the face that had been all over the internet recently, she couldn’t help but gasp.
Good heavens.
Wasn’t that Mu Yingying?
How could Tang Shuxia and Mu Yingying be living together???
If the netizens knew that the two were sharing a room… Xie Jinzhi couldn’t even imagine the sensational news this would create online.
And they were just downstairs plotting how to seduce that person’s husband oh wait, how to scheme to get that man out for a meeting.
They hadn’t kept their voices down during their discussion, so Mu Yingying upstairs must have heard everything clearly.
Xie Jinzhi was so embarrassed she wished she could dig a castle, crawl into a hole, and bury herself. She stammered, plastering on a professional smile if she had a mirror, she would have seen a smile uglier than crying “Teacher Mu, you’re here too.”
The person wearing ‘Mu Yingying’s’ face nodded.
The cold and aloof demeanor was exactly the same as what was rumored online.
Xie Jinzhi watched nervously as the figure gracefully approached her, racking her brain to come up with a plausible excuse. Unfortunately, before she could formulate an excuse, the other person was already standing in front of her. ‘Mu Yingying’ lowered her head and smiled faintly, “Am I beautiful?”
Xie Jinzhi was stunned by the question. She quickly nodded like a chicken pecking at rice, “B-b-beautiful, very beautiful.”
Mu Yingying was considered stunningly glamorous; she was beautiful, yes. But Xie Jinzhi occasionally felt that face was a bit too gaudy. However, she dared not voice this opinion to the person’s face. Xie Jinzhi, worried her habit of blurting out the truth might resurface, fiercely pinched the flesh on her own thigh, sucking in a sharp breath from the pain.
‘Mu Yingying’ suddenly dropped her smile, her expression changing faster than turning a page, “Oh, then compare me to Tang Shuxia who is more beautiful?”
Xie Jinzhi’s smile was pasted on, but inwardly she was cursing: What kind of a death-trap question is this? This person must be trying to sow discord between me and Tang Shuxia.
‘Mu Yingying’ saw her look of profound suffering and suddenly lost the mood to tease her, “Forget it, I won’t mess with you anymore.”
Xie Jinzhi, “???”
Tang Shuxia soon reverted to her original voice, “If it can fool you, it can certainly fool the public’s eyes.”
When Xie Jinzhi heard the person wearing ‘Mu Yingying’s’ face speak with a tone almost identical to Tang Shuxia’s recently, her mind nearly fractured, “You, you, you”
Tang Shuxia casually rubbed away the layer of disguise on her face in front of her, “I told you your previous disguises were terrible.”
Xie Jinzhi stared with wide-open eyes as the person turned and went back into the bedroom. Her mind was a whirl: Who is she? Where am I? What exactly is she doing?
After examining the results, Tang Shuxia began preparing clothes for the evening rendezvous, which included getting the still shell shocked Xie Jinzhi “ready” too. Xie Jinzhi sat in front of the mirror, watching her own face gradually become unfamiliar. She stared at Tang Shuxia’s astonishingly skilled disguise technique, “Are you planning to meet Cheng Zeyu wearing Mu Yingying’s face?”
Tang Shuxia fixed Xie Jinzhi’s head in place while rapidly altering her appearance, “Isn’t that good?”
Xie Jinzhi felt that having Mu Yingying and Cheng Zeyu the husband and wife meet in the same place created a bizarre, indescribable situation, but she couldn’t figure out Tang Shuxia’s exact plan.
Tang Shuxia grinned, “Give the bastard a surprise.”
Xie Jinzhi imagined Cheng Zeyu sneaking off to meet Tang Shuxia behind Mu Yingying’s back, only to turn around and find Mu Yingying also at the agreed location. That feeling would certainly make one’s adrenaline surge “Exciting.”
Tang Shuxia and Xie Jinzhi arrived at the meeting location ten minutes early.
Cheng Zeyu arrived alone. After much deliberation, before opening the door, he secretly turned on his phone’s recording function, fully prepared. He took a deep breath, maintained a decent smile, and slowly pushed open the door. But upon seeing ‘Mu Yingying’, the gentle and refined smile on his face nearly cracked. He closed the door, in disbelief, “What are you doing here? Didn’t I tell you, I have some private matters to discuss with her”
As Cheng Zeyu’s mouth opened and closed, Tang Shuxia flicked her fingers, tossing a compressed candy into his mouth.
Cheng Zeyu paused, “What was that just now?”
Tang Shuxia smiled, “Something good.”
