- Chapter 29 - The Appointment
Upon entering the door, the familiar furniture arrangement was still there, but a few small items had been added.
A bouquet of blooming roses sat on the table, and the aroma of food drifted from it. Tang Shuxia could hear the whirring sound of the range hood in the kitchen, like a buzzing bee. Leaning against the kitchen doorway, she could vaguely see a mess in the sink with a few scattered plates and cutlery, a pile of unwashed vegetables, charred remnants in the trash can, and the wheel tracks of the wheelchair on the floor.
All in all, it was a bit messy.
But compared to the past, it had a trace of domestic warmth, giving the impression that the owner of the house had finally from being a fallen immortal who didn’t eat mortal food willingly tumbled down to the human world.
When Xu Yujing retrieved a bottle of water from the refrigerator and handed it over, she noticed Tang Shuxia staring at her newly changed sofa cushion. The former simple and elegant orchids had been replaced by adorable black and white national treasures. The soft foot cushions were spread open, showcasing their cuteness to the guest. Each chubby, endearing panda paw held a piece of bamboo, and some of the little fatties were even swinging on the bamboo. “Here’s your water.”
Tang Shuxia twisted the cap but couldn’t open it. She immediately put on a fragile, defenseless look. “Could you please help me open it? I really can’t twist it open.”
Xu Yujing stared at the bottle of water in her hand and was silent. “Do you think I can twist it open?”
After saying that, she quickly covered her mouth and coughed twice. The coughing made her lips appear red and teeth white. Coupled with the fact that she was sitting in a wheelchair, she looked even more delicate than the seemingly weak Tang Shuxia, like a character from Dream of the Red Chamber.
Tang Shuxia was speechless.
Fine, Xu Yujing, you win.
Words spoken are like water poured out, so Tang Shuxia couldn’t possibly open the bottle cap with her bare hands now. She tossed the water aside, and with one plan foiled, she immediately hatched another. She pouted her lips. “Then what should I do? I’m so thirsty, and I really want a drink. Please help me.”
As she spoke, she slowly moved closer to Xu Yujing. Unexpectedly, Xu Yujing pushed her wheelchair and turned again, so they were still facing each other. Tang Shuxia leaned in close to Xu Yujing, her eyes hinting suggestively, and her small, red lips were about to touch Xu Yujing’s slightly pale lips when a cold object was placed between them.
Tang Shuxia looked and saw that the object pressing against the bridge of her nose was Xu Yujing’s metal-textured phone.
Xu Yujing slid her wheelchair back, maintaining a wide distance from the woman in front of her. “I’m sorry, I really can’t help you with this. Perhaps you should think of another way.”
Tang Shuxia left empty-handed. She stood outside Xu Yujing’s villa for a moment, her arms crossed, and looked back at the house with confusion. Was her feeling wrong? “Xu Yujing really doesn’t like women?”
Faced with a woman who was practically delivering herself to the door and being so proactive, Xu Yujing remained unmoved. It was highly likely that Tang Shuxia had been mistaken.
Tang Shuxia dismissed the idea that Xu Yujing had any ulterior motives for her and returned home. After taking a shower and changing into a light blue long dress, she applied light makeup before leisurely walking back towards Xu Yujing’s villa. Just as she pressed the doorbell, the doors on both sides opened for her.
It seemed Xu Yujing had also taken a hot shower after she left. Her skin was slightly flushed, and she held a towel in her hand. Her long hair was damp, resting on both sides of her shoulders. In just that short time, the shoulder of her current outfit was already soaking wet. “I heard the doorbell and guessed it might be you.”
Tang Shuxia reminded her, “Your hair.”
Xu Yujing quickly wiped it with the towel. She wiped the left side, but the right side was still dripping water. Tang Shuxia sat down on the sofa and patted it casually. “Why did you suddenly change the sofa cushions? This set doesn’t match the style of your house.” It looked out of place and very abrupt.
The main point was that it wasn’t like Xu Yujing’s usual style.
Xu Yujing explained, “I suddenly found the pandas on this design to be very lifelike and mood-lifting, so I changed them.”
Tang Shuxia agreed. She had also been seeing them frequently on her phone lately. The panda seemed to be quite famous and highly regarded in this world. She also found the little creature a bit cute round and plump, looking very fleshy. She watched Xu Yujing slowly dry her hair. Her top was almost completely soaked. Although the weather was hot this season, getting wet wasn’t a big deal, but having clothes stick to one’s skin was always uncomfortable.
Tang Shuxia watched her wipe her hair at a snail’s pace for five minutes. As expected, Xu Yujing’s top was almost completely drenched and clung to her body, outlining her perfectly developed figure.
Xu Yujing didn’t notice, turning sideways to talk to her while wiping her hair. “How long do you plan to rest at home this time?”
Tang Shuxia interrupted her directly. “Xu Yujing, do you not have a hairdryer at home? That’s faster.”
Xu Yujing paused, then nodded. “I do, but I don’t use it much.”
Tang Shuxia didn’t ask why she didn’t use it. In fact, when she first entered, her attention was immediately drawn to the table full of dishes: sweet and sour pork ribs, braised crucian carp, chicken stew with mushrooms… She was impatient, but here was someone who was deliberately dragging her feet, wiping her hair for ten minutes. Who knew when she would finally get to eat those dishes.
Xu Yujing finished speaking and turned her wheelchair toward the bathroom. Tang Shuxia was taking out her phone to play Fruit Crush. Before she could even pass one level, she heard a loud clang and thump from the bathroom, accompanied by a heavy impact, as if someone had fallen. She forced herself to focus on her phone, staring at the colorful fruit interface for a second, then quickly flipped the phone face down on the sofa and stood up, walking toward the bathroom. “Xu Yujing, what are you doing?”
After a moment, Xu Yujing’s muffled voice came from inside. “I’m fine. Wait for me a moment.”
Tang Shuxia was hungry, and she couldn’t wait any longer.
Tang Shuxia twisted the bathroom door open and saw Xu Yujing bent over, reaching out her arm to try and hook some cosmetic bottle on the floor. She was in a state where she looked about to fall over, just like when Tang Shuxia first saw her leaning against the window to grab something. Tang Shuxia quickly stepped over the scattered bottles and jars on the floor, grabbed the collar of Xu Yujing’s shirt, and pulled her back onto her chair. Xu Yujing failed to grab the item and looked up at Tang Shuxia with teary eyes. Tang Shuxia then noticed that some kind of lotion had spilled into Xu Yujing’s lap white and sticky.
Xu Yujing looked flustered, her voice low, giving a shaky assurance. “Give me a few minutes, I can clean it up.”
Tang Shuxia glanced and saw her black hairdryer hanging perfectly on the wall. The electrical outlet was quite high off the ground. She realized why Xu Yujing had a hairdryer but didn’t use it—she couldn’t reach it unless she could stand up. All the furnishings in this room were placed at the normal height for an adult woman.
In other words, Xu Yujing wasn’t disabled at that time.
Tang Shuxia concealed the annoyance in her eyes and, despite Xu Yujing’s startled cry, lifted her horizontally into her arms. “Where’s the room?” After asking, she realized she had been foolish. She was basically familiar with Xu Yujing’s place; the room was on the second floor by the window, probably a similar layout to her own villa.
Xu Yujing kindly pointed out the location. “Aren’t you going to dry my hair?”
Dry what hair.
She now only wanted to smack herself for telling Xu Yujing to dry her hair half an hour ago.
Tang Shuxia exuded an “I’m busy, don’t come near me” aura, but after a few minutes of Xu Yujing’s anxious anticipation, she glanced at her and stated emotionlessly, “You need to change your clothes.”
Xu Yujing’s villa had an elevator installed to facilitate her movement. Tang Shuxia noticed the obvious installation marks, realizing it must have been put in after Xu Yujing became unable to walk. The hand around her neck was tightly gripping her, and Tang Shuxia was worried she might fall, so she shifted her grip, holding her higher. Her fingers, however, brushed against a full, soft mound, and she instinctively squeezed it.
The person in her arms tensed up.
Tang Shuxia looked down to see Xu Yujing’s beautiful eyes wide open, her earlobes red. From this angle, she could see Xu Yujing biting her lip, looking as if she were enduring some great grievance. Did I just do something inappropriate? Tang Shuxia couldn’t resist and squeezed again. Very good, very elastic.
Xu Yujing’s face flushed deep red, and she simply buried her head in Tang Shuxia’s chest.
Tang Shuxia was confused. Such a big reaction?
Tang Shuxia didn’t have time to figure out why Xu Yujing’s reaction was so strange. She kicked open Xu Yujing’s room door. The room was simple and stylish, mainly black and white with no excessive color. Even the bedding was black. She placed Xu Yujing on the bedside, but Xu Yujing was still clutching her clothes. Tang Shuxia gently patted Xu Yujing’s waist, asking her to let go. However, the person in her arms reacted even more strongly, almost jumping.
Xu Yujing’s face was beet red, and her eyes were wet, as if misted over, adding a hint of ambiguity to her originally clear, beautiful eyes.
Tang Shuxia stared at those eyes for ten seconds and felt strangely uncomfortable. “What color clothes do you like? I’ll pick some for you.”
Xu Yujing was about to say “anything,” when she noticed Tang Shuxia’s chest also had some foundation on it, likely rubbed off from her own clothes. “Your clothes—”
Tang Shuxia looked down. “…”
Xu Yujing tightly pursed her lips. “If you don’t mind, change into mine. I have a few new outfits that haven’t been worn.”
The two were similar in build. Tang Shuxia quickly estimated Xu Yujing’s height and began sorting through her closet. Xu Yujing’s wardrobe contained many designer clothes with comfortable fabric, but they mostly looked like formal, serious work attire.
Tang Shuxia sifted through them and finally found two very feminine small floral dresses tucked away in a corner one pink, one light blue.
She kept the pink one for herself and tossed the other one to Xu Yujing.
Xu Yujing was covered head to toe by the dress. Since her legs became crippled, she hadn’t worn a skirt, especially one that didn’t go past her knees. She was debating how to tell Tang Shuxia when she pulled the skirt off her face and looked up, only to see Tang Shuxia casually stripping off her dress as if no one else was there. Her pupils instantly dilated.
That straight, pale, and elegant back, with its soft curves extending to her full lower back and hips. There were even two cute little dimples on either side of her waist. It was displayed completely naked before her, like a beautiful, breathtaking painting. Xu Yujing couldn’t help but lightly lick the corner of her lips.
Xu Yujing quickly turned her head away, yet uncontrollably glanced back at the two waist dimples. They were truly adorable.
However, this beautiful sight was only a fleeting moment, blossoming and ending in an instant.
Tang Shuxia had quickly slipped into the pink floral dress. She tugged at it; the waist was a little tight. “I seem to have gained a little weight recently.”
She spent every day eating, drinking, and having fun, with nothing to worry about. If she could lie down, she would never sit up. Moreover, to adapt to the rhythm of this world, she had basically abandoned her previous routine, not to mention her daily martial arts practice. Without realizing it, her waist size seemed to have increased a little.
Xu Yujing looked at her small, easily grasped waist with regret. “Not at all, you look great.”
Tang Shuxia also felt that apart from being a little tight, there was nothing wrong with it. Still, she needed to resume her martial arts training if for no other reason than to maintain her figure. After adjusting everything, she noticed Xu Yujing sitting there foolishly, hugging the dress. “Why aren’t you changing?”
Xu Yujing stammered, “Ah, ah, I…”
Tang Shuxia felt that a dress was convenient; just slip it on and pull it off. “Do you need my help?”
Xu Yujing immediately shook her head. “I can do it myself.”
Tang Shuxia remained skeptical. Xu Yujing quickly asked her to turn her back. “I’ll change myself.”
During her time in the hospital, Xu Yujing had hired a caregiver. After being discharged, she refused all offers of help. In an almost self-abusive manner, she forced herself to use the bathroom, change clothes, and bathe alone. Doing everything herself, even if she fell and was bruised, made her feel that she was still a normal person, not a useless cripple just because she had lost the use of her legs.
Tang Shuxia listened to the rustling sound behind her. She waited patiently until the sound stopped, then turned around. “Xu Yujing, you should be”
Xu Yujing’s clothes were half-open, and her eyes were in a dazed state, especially staring at her own legs.
She hadn’t expected Tang Shuxia to suddenly turn around.
She was like a cat whose tail had been suddenly stepped on, her entire body bristling. She frantically pulled the quilt over her legs, which were already showing signs of muscle atrophy and looked like dry, old tree bark. She only managed to cover half of them. Seeing Tang Shuxia staring intently at her legs, her lips trembled. “Turn away, don’t look at me, don’t look at me.”
Tang Shuxia was startled by her reaction, but quickly walked over and pulled up the clothing that had slipped to Xu Yujing’s shoulder. Xu Yujing reached out to push the person in front of her away, but her hand stopped at Tang Shuxia’s shoulder, changing to a tight grip on Tang Shuxia’s newly changed dress. “Please, don’t look at me. I’m really ugly.”
After the doctor made the diagnosis about her legs, she knew this day would come, but seeing them every day was still difficult to accept. Especially now that Tang Shuxia had finally seen her ugly body, this person would surely find her disgusting so disgusting that she wouldn’t want to see her again in this lifetime.
Tang Shuxia wrapped her arms around Xu Yujing’s shoulders and effortlessly pulled up the zipper on her back. Finally, she gently patted this violently trembling body. “Xu Yujing, I’ve seen things much uglier than this. Yours is nothing at all.”
Xu Yujing shook her head. She greedily soaked in the brief warmth, tightly clutching the person’s clothes, not wanting her to leave. “Don’t lie to me. I’ll believe you.”
Tang Shuxia chuckled. “Why would I lie to you?”
She had seen people with severed hands, severed feet, those dismembered by five horses, those with intestines pulled out, and even heads twisted off. Hmm, and she had personally twisted that head off. Tang Shuxia reined in her scattered thoughts and gently patted the other person’s back again. “Xu Yujing, I’m not kidding. You are fine, not ugly.”
Perhaps her words were comforting, as Xu Yujing’s distressed emotions gradually calmed down. She quickly let go of the fabric in her hands and lowered her gaze. “I’m so sorry about just now.”
Tang Shuxia generously expressed that it was nothing. As she got up, she glanced at those legs again. “May I be so bold as to ask, your legs are”
Xu Yujing opened her mouth, and after a long time, managed to squeeze out two words. “Car accident.”
Although she had survived by luck, her legs were useless.
Tang Shuxia nodded. The next second, she directly lifted the quilt, and those slender, pale hands gently touched her legs.
This was the second time today Xu Yujing almost forgot to breathe. When she tried to cover herself, she found Tang Shuxia half-kneeling by the bed, staring at her legs with a solemn expression—not a look of judgment or disgust. Fortunately, her legs had long lost all sensation, so even as Tang Shuxia’s hand traced from her shin bone to her thigh bone, and even the inner side of her thigh, the technique was exactly like that of an orthopedic doctor in a hospital. “What are you doing?”
Tang Shuxia felt extremely carefully, almost tracing every inch. After one pass, as if unconvinced, she repeated the process. “It’s alright.”
Xu Yujing was confused.
Tang Shuxia spoke concisely. “Your legs haven’t atrophied yet. There’s still hope.”
