- Chapter 14 - Threat
Tang Shuxia entered a detention center for the first time in her life.
The police officers in uniform who saw her coming and going couldn’t help but glance at her. Indeed, the recent affairs of Tang Shuxia had caused a big stir. Even those who didn’t follow the circle had heard about it, knowing she was the unfortunate victim framed by Mu Yingying and Cheng Zeyu.
“Hello, Lawyer Cao.”
“You must be Miss Tang, hello.”
Tang Shuxia hadn’t expected the lawyer to also be a capable woman. She was slightly stunned but still extended her hand to shake, quickly retracting it. Lawyer Cao got straight to the point, “Miss Xie has likely relayed most of the situation to you, Miss Tang. The other party’s family has proposed a private settlement, and they are willing to cover all of Miss Tang’s medical expenses.”
Tang Shuxia, “I refuse.”
Xie Jinzhi nodded, “Yes, Lawyer Cao, we have discussed it, and we have decided against a settlement.”
Lawyer Cao was taken aback. She had handled many celebrity cases, and most artists, when faced with public opinion or the desire to gain a favorable reputation, instinctively chose the side that benefited them, seeking to smooth things over. She hadn’t expected Tang Shuxia to refuse without hesitation. “Miss Tang, have you considered this carefully?”
Tang Shuxia, “Do I need to repeat myself?”
Lawyer Cao understood; her employer’s temperament was not as fragile as her appearance suggested, perhaps even quite tough. “Please come this way.”
Upon reflection, it made sense. After all, this was someone who fought back desperately amidst cyberbullying. How could she be someone easily bullied? Even if she was a little lamb before, after experiencing all this, if she wanted to survive in the deep waters of the entertainment circle, she would likely have to transform.
Because Tang Shuxia’s side was firm in not backing down, and the incident happened in a bustling shopping center, with clear surveillance footage and eyewitnesses, the evidence was ironclad. Therefore, the assailant remained detained. Lawyer Cao dutifully briefed Tang Shuxia on the defendant’s identity. There were two people who did the hitting, and the most aggressive one was a middle aged woman named Fang Xiaochun. After initially being brought to the detention center, this woman was disruptive and refused to admit fault, insisting that a woman who acts as a mistress deserves to be beaten.
Her attitude was extremely hostile.
Later, perhaps realizing she might face jail time, her attitude took a dramatic turn.
Tang Shuxia sat on the cold chair, immediately noticing it wasn’t as comfortable as her sofa at home. She shifted her posterior slightly and looked calmly at the disheveled woman with shifty eyes. This look was indeed exactly the same as when she first saw her, though after a few days locked up, the woman before her was even more wretched.
It turned out that whether it was someone as noble as the three time Golden Rooster Award winner Mu Yingying or this ignorant woman before her, their appearances in misfortune remarkably overlapped.
Tang Shuxia, “I heard you wanted to see me.”
Fang Xiaochun, having been detained for several days, didn’t want to stay there any longer. She slowly got up from her seat and suddenly knelt before Tang Shuxia, reaching out with her slightly rough hands to grab Tang Shuxia, who nimbly dodged.
Xie Jinzhi was startled, thinking the woman was deliberately provoking them again, “What are you doing!”
Fang Xiaochun was also frightened by the shout. She pouted, and tears instantly welled up. “I was wrong before, I shouldn’t have thrown things at you. But I already know I was wrong. Especially under the supervision of the police officers, I have reflected seriously. Please be magnanimous and don’t hold a grudge against me, someone who came from a poor village.”
Tang Shuxia glanced at her faintly, “You know you were wrong?”
Fang Xiaochun nodded repeatedly, “Yes, yes.”
Tang Shuxia then casually chose a spot farther away from her, “But, you knowing you’re wrong, what does that have to do with me?”
Fang Xiaochun, “!!!”
Fang Xiaochun quickly composed herself, “I… I know who paid to harm you. I’ll tell you, can you let them release me?”
Tang Shuxia scoffed, “A woman?”
Fang Xiaochun, “Yes, yes, a woman, very rich. She drives that kind of luxury car you people talk about, and she was wearing one of these big…” She gestured clumsily with her hands, then abruptly stopped speaking, licking her dry lips and staring nervously at Tang Shuxia, only to find that the other party’s indifferent expression hadn’t changed at all from beginning to end.
No curiosity, no surprise, and certainly no anticipation.
Xie Jinzhi was listening to the crucial part, “Wearing one what?”
Fang Xiaochun was getting tired of kneeling, so she shifted her posture and sat down hard on the floor, “If I tell you, can you not pursue my responsibility?”
Tang Shuxia smiled, “Is this what you call knowing you’re wrong?”
Fang Xiaochun played coy on the spot, “Yes, otherwise why would I call you here? If you don’t let me out, I won’t tell you.”
Tang Shuxia stood up, “Let’s go.”
Fang Xiaochun immediately panicked and quickly changed her tune, “No, no, I want to go home. But the comrades at the police station said whether I can go back depends on your attitude. If you forgive me, I can leave immediately. I was just thinking, I was paid to do this; even if it wasn’t me, it would have been someone else, right? If you want to prosecute, can you prosecute that person instead? My child is waiting for me at home, and I have a 70-year-old paralyzed mother in bed. I just want to earn more money. These few days I’ve been here, I don’t know how the two of them at home are managing. I can’t stay here. Miss Tang, good deeds are rewarded; please let me go. I will be your ox or horse in the next life, please, I beg you.”
Good person?
Tang Shuxia hadn’t heard anyone call her a good person in a long time, “But I’m not a good person.”
Xie Jinzhi quickly looked towards the surveillance, “Hahaha, Shuxia, stop joking.” She leaned close to Tang Shuxia and whispered, “This is the police station; don’t say things carelessly.”
Tang Shuxia glanced at the furnishings in the distance.
Fang Xiaochun saw her turning around, “You, don’t you want to know who is trying to harm you? As long as you let me go, I’ll tell you everything I know, really, I promise. Otherwise, what if that woman pays someone to hit you again next time? Won’t you have to go to the hospital again?”
Tang Shuxia kicked away the hand she reached out again, “Your guarantee is worthless to me.”
Xie Jinzhi was also anxious. After learning about this woman from Cheng Zeyu, she was counting on these two people to reveal more about the “bad woman.” As the saying goes, a thief can only steal for a thousand days, but one can’t guard against a thief forever. As long as this woman wasn’t caught, her heart felt unsettled, constantly worried that her Shuxia would be harmed. “I advise you to tell the truth. Perhaps they will give you a lighter sentence considering your sincere remorse.”
Tang Shuxia paused her steps, “If you don’t leave, stay here and keep her company.”
Xie Jinzhi, “…”
No way, whoever wants this honor can take it.
She quickly hurried after her, “Don’t you want to know who that woman is? Fang Xiaochun was about to tell you. If this woman keeps hiding in the dark like a mouse, it’s not a good thing.”
Tang Shuxia, “I probably know who it is.”
Xie Jinzhi, “!!!”
In fact, only after learning about this woman from Cheng Zeyu did the logical chain of the original body being framed as the mistress finally make sense to Tang Shuxia. The original body was an unknown, struggling B-lister, not worth a three time Golden Rooster Award winner like Mu Yingying personally taking action against her, unless there was a greater benefit to tempt Mu Yingying, which is why Tang Shuxia found the whole situation somewhat odd.
But the woman behind this was also cunning.
According to Cheng Zeyu, this woman wanted to ruin her reputation, cause her to be disgraced, and was even willing to offer resources that could move Mu Yingying and Cheng Zeyu. Although the exact type of resource wasn’t clear, one thing could be confirmed: this woman was quite wealthy.
According to Fang Xiaochun’s statement, this woman paid money to deal with the original body ten thousand yuan for each hit. If a hundred people were instigated by her, the original body would surely be dead. Comparing the two methods, one’s viciousness and clarity were obvious. But whether it was a different woman or the same person, they all wanted the original owner to suffer.
Other than matters of interest, Tang Shuxia couldn’t think of any other reason.
Xie Jinzhi was shocked, “You know? Since you know, why did we bother making this trip? We could have directly called the police and had them arrest the person.”
A trace of coldness flashed in Tang Shuxia’s eyes, “Don’t you think watching their struggle before their imminent demise is quite entertaining?”
Xie Jinzhi shivered abruptly.
Tang Shuxia suddenly seemed to discover something interesting and stepped closer, “Are you afraid of me?”
Xie Jinzhi couldn’t quite describe the feeling. It was like someone she had known for a while suddenly changed their temperament completely, becoming entirely different from before. Most importantly, she felt the Shuxia before her was too abnormal. The next second, Xie Jinzhi reassured herself; it must be because the other party suffered a head injury, causing this change. “No, how could I be afraid of you? I’m just worried about you.”
Tang Shuxia immediately felt bored.
On the way back, the two remained silent. Xie Jinzhi kept trying to start a conversation, but none were successful. Until Tang Shuxia’s phone rang again and again, she quietly reminded her, “Aren’t you going to answer?”
Tang Shuxia closed her eyes and pretended to be dozing, “Unimportant people.”
Xie Jinzhi, “Oh.”
But the calls kept coming. Tang Shuxia found it annoying and was about to turn off her phone when she caught sight of a text message.
[If you don’t come back right away, all your cards will be frozen.]
Tang Shuxia stared at the text message on her phone for a full five minutes. Xie Jinzhi saw the smile on her face gradually widen in the rearview mirror, making her scalp inexplicably tingle. “What is it? Why are you so happy?”
Tang Shuxia, “Someone is rushing to jump out. Don’t you think that’s something worth celebrating?”
Xie Jinzhi, “???”
Tang Shuxia tucked her phone into her pocket, “Change route, go to this address.”
Xie Jinzhi almost cried. This little master seemed to have forgotten even basic traffic rules since waking up. “We are not allowed to change lanes here.”
Tang Shuxia, “Perfect, let them wait then.”
Xie Jinzhi sensed something from her tone and drove with increasing apprehension, “Shuxia, can you give me a hint? Who are you planning to meet?”
Tang Shuxia pondered for a while, “Tang Mingcheng.”
Xie Jinzhi looked confused. That name sounded vaguely familiar.
