- Chapter 7 - Toying With Him Like a Dog
After bringing the person back, Pei Yisheng felt his mission was accomplished. He put the toiletries back in the bathroom, grabbed a jacket, and prepared to head out.
Lin Jiayu didn’t dare to wake Qin Zhou up by force. Seeing Pei Yisheng about to leave, he quickly stood up. “Shengsheng, take some breakfast with you.”
Worried that Pei Yisheng might feel burdened, Lin Jiayu said considerately, “I bought too much. It’ll go to waste if we don’t eat it.”
The breakfast bags were indeed large. Lin Jiayu blocked his path while pulling items out: shrimp dumplings, soup dumplings, shaomai there were at least five or six varieties. There were also different flavors of porridge and three cups of soy milk, silent proof that a portion had indeed been intended for Pei Yisheng.
Pei Yisheng felt awkward taking the food and leaving immediately, so he went to the balcony with Lin Jiayu.
The balcony was separated by a glass door and was quite soundproof. When the building was constructed, a round table for afternoon tea had been included in each balcony to add a touch of class. After Wen Xiuyun and Song Wen moved in, they had completely overhauled the furniture, making the dormitory truly comfortable.
Carefully cultivated blue plumbago hung like a blue waterfall; even the early autumn wind couldn’t make the flowers fall.
Watching Pei Yisheng hold a small bowl and eat seafood porridge in front of the wall of flowers, Lin Jiayu couldn’t help but fantasize about what Pei Yisheng’s daily life must have been like before the Pei family went bankrupt.
It must have been a leisurely, carefree time.
He rested his chin on his hand, quietly watching Pei Yisheng drink the porridge.
The first thing Qin Zhou did when he woke up was look at the opposite bed. When Pei Yisheng slept, he would pull the bed curtains shut, blocking any prying eyes. Once he got up, the curtains would be drawn back, allowing the afternoon sunlight to flood his bed.
Now, the bed was tidy, looking as if no one had ever slept there.
Qin Zhou frowned. Had his alertness really dropped this low? He hadn’t even heard the sound of Pei Yisheng getting up?
A trace of irritation crossed his brow. He ran his hand through his hair and got out of bed to wash up, only to look up and see two people eating and chatting happily on the balcony.
Heh, isn’t that Lin Jiayu? When did this grandson get in here?
And Pei Yisheng was smiling. Smile, smile, smile what’s so funny?
He slammed the bathroom door shut with a thunderous bang. Pei Yisheng’s eyes went wide and round. He stood up and looked into the dorm, but seeing no sign of Qin Zhou, he turned back to Lin Jiayu, his voice fluttering. “Did we wake Qin Zhou up? Is he angry?”
Lin Jiayu wasn’t sure about that ancestor’s temper either, but their voices hadn’t been loud! Pei Yisheng had even restrained his voice when laughing. They had also left breakfast for Qin Zhou, so what did he have to be angry about?
“Don’t mind him. He just has a terrible morning grumpiness. He’ll calm down after he washes up,” Lin Jiayu urged Pei Yisheng to sit back down.
Pei Yisheng glanced at the bathroom door a few more times. Seeing no sign of it opening, he opened the balcony glass door so that they would know the moment Qin Zhou came out.
However, did Qin Zhou really have a bad temper in the morning? He hadn’t really noticed it.
Pei Yisheng’s doubt flashed through his mind for a second before his attention was drawn back by Lin Jiayu’s words.
“Teachers are probably all the same. If you have any questions or need help with your studies, just come to me. Don’t be shy,” Lin Jiayu said with a bright smile. “Even though your family doesn’t have a presence here anymore, the old sentiments are still there. Don’t feel embarrassed.”
“Sometimes, being a bit thick-skinned makes life a little easier. Who’s going to care about today’s matters ten years from now?”
Pei Yisheng’s eyelashes flickered, with tiny crystals of moisture clinging to the thick lashes. He gave an imperceptible sniff. “Thank you.”
“Thank you for what?” Qin Zhou’s handsome face was still dripping with water. Drops splashed onto his chest muscles and slid down to his abs. His wild, uninhibited appearance was almost too much for Lin Jiayu to look at. Lin Jiayu grabbed a napkin nearby and shoved it into his hand, saying with disgust, “Hurry up and wipe the water off. What if it drips into the breakfast?”
Thanks to Su Yiyi’s enthusiastic promotion, Pei Yisheng already knew Qin Zhou had a good physique. Having caught a glimpse last night and now looking openly today, he realized it truly was impressive.
No wonder he could beat Cao Qing until he cried for his parents. Those muscles were probably half-trained and half-honed through real fighting.
Pei Yisheng silently swallowed, thinking to himself that he must never make Qin Zhou unhappy. Getting beaten up would not be pleasant.
“Senior Lin said I can ask him for help if I have study problems. I was just thanking him.”
Qin Zhou curled his lips in a smirk. This trivial matter is worth a thank you? His eyes were still red while saying such things it felt like he was being toyed with like a dog.
“Fine then. With the little ability he has, helping you is about all he can do. Be careful not to let him lead you into a ditch and make you fail your classes.”
With one insult, he hit them both. The two looked at each other, not daring to speak.
After breakfast, Pei Yisheng used the excuse of going to the library to study and slipped away.
Qin Zhou and Lin Jiayu also left the dormitory. Qin Zhou, smelling the slight scent of sweat on his clothes, was extremely disgusted. “Go to my place first so I can change.”
“I told you to go home directly yesterday, but you wouldn’t. Look at the trouble now.”
Qin Zhou didn’t know what had possessed him to sleep in the dorm yesterday. “It’s fine. I’m just short a few changes of clothes. Without those two eyesores, staying in the dorm is more convenient than being off-campus.”
“Does that mean you want to stay here long-term? I won’t be bringing you breakfast every time, you know.” Lin Jiayu was just here for the drama this time, not to be Qin Zhou’s errand boy.
Qin Zhou gave him a side-eye. “No one asked you to.”
“That mouth of yours is going to drive away your only friend sooner or later! You can be a lonely king then!”
Qin Zhou snorted, completely indifferent to Lin Jiayu’s clamoring.
Just as the car reached the campus road, a bicycle suddenly wobbled and swerved in front of them. Qin Zhou slammed on the brakes, stopping less than half a meter from the person.
The cyclist hadn’t even noticed his surroundings yet. He was still clumsily switching his feet, trying to get the bike moving. The more anxious he got, the more chaotic it became. Just as Qin Zhou got out of the car to give him a lecture on traffic laws, the person and the bike collapsed together in a perfectly timed fall.
Lin Jiayu sat in the car, dumbfounded. Are we being scammed on campus?
Look at Qin Zhou’s license plate! How does he dare try to scam him!
Seeing Qin Zhou’s face as black as the bottom of a pot, Lin Jiayu immediately got out to pacify both sides while also managing the traffic behind them. He couldn’t let all the students gather to watch the scene.
Once the traffic behind started moving, Lin Jiayu scurried to the front of the car. He looked, and wow an acquaintance!
Fang Xin was still a bit out of it. Right in front of his eyes was the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament of the Cullinan. Next to it was Qin Zhou, standing with arms crossed, staring at him coldly. He belatedly tried to stand up, but as he reached for the bike, he realized his ankle hurt.
Perhaps the injury hadn’t fully healed yet. That seemingly gentle Wen Xiuyun had only taken him to see a doctor and buy medicine, but hadn’t cared about him afterward. Word was he had gone on an exchange program and wouldn’t be back for a month.
Fang Xin couldn’t find anyone, had to attend classes, and had to endure the pressure of strange looks from those around him. He hadn’t recovered at all. His face was haggard and full of grievance. He opened his mouth and said to Qin Zhou, “Classmate, can you please stop letting everyone cyberbully me?”
“I don’t mean to cling to you. That day in the cafeteria, I just wanted to thank you for giving me directions. Today was an accident, too; I didn’t mean it. Can you please explain it to everyone? It’s really hard for me when they misunderstand me like this.”
As the protagonist “shou” (receiver), Fang Xin did have his merits. He had a gentle, honest appearance that, combined with the anxiety and inferiority of someone newly arrived from a small town to a big city, easily attracted certain types of deviants. In the original plot, those wealthy second-generation heirs who squandered their lives enjoyed entertaining themselves at his expense.
At this moment, his look of being overwhelmed actually made the passing students feel soft-hearted.
“Exactly. So many people chase after those popular guys, why are they always targeting him? It’s so unfair.”
“Fang Xin isn’t in the wrong, right? At least his intentions were good.”
“Next time there’s a post, I’ll speak up for him.”
“Are you serious? You can’t hear the ‘green tea’ (manipulative) tone? Besides, who spends all day watching him? The last time there was a post about him, it was about Wen Xiuyun, right? Everyone was asking who was sitting on Wen Xiuyun’s lap; who cares about the clown?”
“But how does he precisely target these two every time? Or is he actually just always clumsily bumping into people?”
“Does he have some kind of medical condition?”
Qin Zhou narrowed his eyes, sizing the person up. After a long while, he looked at Fang Xin’s reddening ears and let out a mocking laugh. “Is that so? If I explain, will all of this disappear?”
“I’m telling you, it won’t. It will only get worse. The best way to solve this is to see me and don’t stop, and don’t talk to me.”
“On one hand, you say you’re troubled, yet on the other, you create your own predicaments. I really can’t figure out what you’re trying to do. If you’re trying to show how ‘unique’ you are, I’m sorry, but it’s very cheap.” Qin Zhou raised an eyebrow, his playful gaze nearly making Fang Xin wish he could vanish.
Fang Xin breathed rapidly, his chest heaving as if he were fuming. “It’s not like that!”
“Fine. Take this money. Since you fell in front of my car, go get checked at the hospital.” Qin Zhou pointed to his head. “Walk slowly. I won’t see you off.”
He turned and got into the car, honking at Lin Jiayu, who hadn’t returned yet.
Lin Jiayu scurried back into the car. “Buddy, your tongue is so sharp! Were you actually going easy on me before? Heavens, my world view has been reshaped. Qin Zhou is actually very… ‘friendly’!”
Qin Zhou: “…”
The episode didn’t affect Qin Zhou much, but it pushed Fang Xin back into the spotlight.
Lin Jiayu felt this wasn’t right. Qin Zhou and Fang Xin had nothing to do with each other; it wouldn’t be good if they ended up being tied together by rumors.
He privately sought out the forum administrator and had many of the posts deleted. Once the students noticed, they stopped talking about it.
Su Yiyi, lacking food for his spiritual world, lost his drive to study.
One day, he nudged Pei Yisheng. “I heard the CP Comic Con is starting soon. Chengcheng gave me a few tickets. I think she’s going to cosplay a male character, though I forgot which one. Let’s go support her! I can even take photos for her!”
“Chengcheng does cosplay too?” Pei Yisheng had a good impression of her. “Which day is it? I’ll check my schedule.”
If the CP Con was happening, he might have to put his freelance photography work on hold for a bit.
