- Chapter 92 - The Mischievous Child Thrown into the Water
The boy seemed to be in a hurry. After kowtowing in front of the Primordial God’s statue, he left in the pouring rain.
Qiu Fuxue bowed his head three times to the statue and then looked at Jiufang Cangze.
“…Do I have to bow, too?”
“Yes.”
With that single, simple word, the once-arrogant Demon Lord obediently knelt before his greatest nemesis in this life, albeit not with much piety.
Seeing him look as if he had suffered a great injustice, Qiu Fuxue quietly said, “Even if you don’t bow now, you’ll have to at our wedding. You might as well get used to it.”
Wedding! At the mention of their wedding, Jiufang Cangze was filled with energy. “We found the Primordial God’s statue. Should I carry it out now?”
“Hey!” Qiu Fuxue quickly stopped him. “This is an illusion. Where are you going to carry it to?”
Things inside the illusion couldn’t be taken out. Jiufang Cangze belatedly realized this and lowered the sleeves he had just rolled up.
Qiu Fuxue’s lips curved into a satisfied smile. While it was a rash move, it was proof that Jiufang Cangze only had him in his heart.
The rain came quickly and left just as fast. Outside, the sky was clear, and the crisp chirping of birds could be heard.
Qiu Fuxue walked out of the temple and keenly noticed that the houses around them had a few more signs of aging.
“Time here passes very quickly.”
Jiufang Cangze also felt it. The saplings that were there before they went in had grown a lot taller. “The people here are all spirits. They’re repeating the things that happened when they were alive.”
In other words, they were Earth-Bound Spirits.
Qiu Fuxue looked back at the crude statue and suddenly had a premonition. He might not be able to take this statue back with him.
The barrier they had entered through was undoubtedly set up by the Primordial God. Something must have happened to this village for it to have sunk to the bottom of the sea.
A child ran past them, his face filled with a malicious smile. He was clutching a packet of medicine in his hand. Jiufang Cangze narrowed his long, phoenix-like eyes and didn’t hesitate to trip him.
“Ouch!” The child fell face-first to the ground, crying and wailing.
A fair, slender hand picked up the medicine packet on the ground. Qiu Fuxue sniffed it, then turned and asked the child, “This medicine is for internal injuries and bone pain. What are you doing running and jumping around with it?”
“None of your business!” The child sat on the ground and sobbed. “You hateful outsiders! I’m going to tell my parents! They’ll kill all of you!”
Such vicious words coming from a child’s mouth made Qiu Fuxue’s brows furrow. Jiufang Cangze, on the other hand, immediately raised his fist. “You little brat, you want me to beat you to death right now?!”
Taking the child’s medicine, Qiu Fuxue looked in the direction he had come from and grabbed Jiufang Cangze’s wrist. “Don’t mind him. Let’s go see what’s over there.”
Jiufang Cangze snorted, only stopping when the child’s wailing grew even louder.
The river water flowed clear and gurgling. The sunlight sparkling on the surface looked like a beautiful starry sky.
This river was identical to the Flowing Light River next to the Azure Sea Palace.
But Qiu Fuxue didn’t have time to ponder this, because on the other side of the river, a group of mischievous children were holding a man down and bullying him.
The man seemed to have difficulty moving. He could only watch helplessly as the children threw the medicine he had just received into the river.
There was a simple stone bridge made of a few rocks in the river. Qiu Fuxue didn’t use it. He took Jiufang Cangze’s hand and flew over.
He drew his sword, Zhengxin, for show and scolded them. “Where did you children come from! Leave at once! If you don’t, I’ll go tell your parents!”
The mischievous children were a little timid at the sight of the sword in his hand, but one brave one puffed out his chest and said fearlessly, “Our parents aren’t afraid of you!”
Jiufang Cangze had plenty of ways to deal with these ill-mannered brats.
With a cold face, he picked up the ringleader and threw him directly into the river.
The river was not deep on the side, only reaching the child’s chest, but it was enough to make him soaking wet.
The boy, dripping from head to toe, started wailing at the top of his lungs.
Jiufang Cangze crossed his arms nonchalantly and threatened the rest of the children. “Anyone else feel like they’re dirty? I can help you take a bath.”
These children were usually protected by adults and no one dared to do anything when they caused trouble in the village. But now they had run into someone who was more powerful, and their legs immediately turned to jelly. They scattered and ran.
Qiu Fuxue smiled. He felt in his heart that Jiufang Cangze’s bloodthirsty nature was changing little by little.
He knelt down and helped the man pick up the scattered medicine on the ground.
The man, who had one grayish-white eye, struggled to get up. “Thank you, gentlemen.”
“No need to be so polite, sir.” Qiu Fuxue fished out the medicine floating in the river. “These… are probably unusable.”
A look of disappointment crossed the man’s face, but he quickly forced a smile. “It’s alright. I’m grateful to have salvaged even this much.”
To show his gratitude, the man invited them to his home. Qiu Fuxue wanted to find out what had happened to this place and agreed.
The man lived in a dimly lit, simple hut. As soon as they entered, Qiu Fuxue noticed there were two beds, which meant someone else lived there besides the man.
In ancient times, tea was not common. The man only poured them two cups of water. Jiufang Cangze looked around the drafty hut and felt it was even worse than the small wooden cabin he had built in the Qianshan Sect (千念宗).
A rusted saber was hanging on the wall. A strange totem was carved into the hilt.
Qiu Fuxue looked at it closely for a few moments, then suddenly asked the man, “Sir, were you once a general of the Lan Kingdom (瀾國)?”
In ancient times, various powers held sway, and many kingdoms had risen. Qiu Fuxue had read about the Lan Kingdom in ancient texts. The kingdom’s totem was identical to the one carved on the hilt of the saber.
The man was slightly startled, not expecting anyone to recognize the Lan Kingdom’s totem.
“…Yes. But I lost a battle.”
Back then, territorial disputes were fierce. If a general lost a battle, a cruel king might have them all executed.
This man must have been a refugee from the Lan Kingdom.
The atmosphere became heavy. Fortunately, the sound of a boy’s voice broke the silence. “Dad, I’m back!”
Qiu Fuxue found the voice familiar. The boy entered the hut with the sun behind him. It was hard to see his face, but his silhouette was recognizable.
“You two gentlemen, it’s you!”
The boy’s eyes were filled with surprise. He hadn’t expected them to still be here after so long.
Qiu Fuxue looked at the boy, who had grown much taller. He smiled. “It’s been a while.”
It had indeed been a while. Although for them it had only been an instant, for the boy, several years had passed.
The boy’s name was Xiao Chi . He had just returned from gathering firewood on the mountain. He enthusiastically told his father about meeting Qiu Fuxue a few years ago.
The man’s face filled with gratitude. He repeatedly thanked them, saying that it was a sign from a god, that Qiu Fuxue was a god sent to help them.
