- Chapter 65 - Strong Wine Pours into a Sad Heart
Inside the tavern, Shengyan looked at the empty wine jugs on the table. He swallowed in astonishment. “Dude… what are you so upset about…?”
Jiufang Cangze didn’t speak. He opened a new jug of wine and continued to chug it.
Shengyan, afraid he would drink himself to death, tried to stop him while also giving him advice. “Listen to me, man! The car will find a road when it gets to the mountain, and the boat will sink when it gets to the bridge… no, that’s not right. Anyway, there are so many wonderful things in this world! Why bother?”
Jiufang Cangze was drunk and groggy. He couldn’t hold onto the wine jug and burped on the table. His mind was muddled. “He… he’s… getting betrothed to someone else today…”
Shengyan scratched his head. “Ah, heartbreak.”
“Wuwu…”
“Oh, man…” Shengyan stood up and patted his shoulder. He said with a sense of justice, “Brother, there are plenty of fish in the sea! You don’t have to pine for one single flower! Besides, you’re not bad-looking. Look at all the pretty girls on the street. Do you fancy any of them? I’ll be your matchmaker right now!”
His pats were not light, and they landed right on Jiufang Cangze’s shoulder wound. The latter couldn’t hold it in and started crying.
“Wuwu… wuwu… he is the best flower!”
A man so foolishly devoted, even the eloquent Shengyan was at a loss. He knew that with this kind of person, you couldn’t try to reason with them. You had to distract them with something else to make them forget their pain.
Jiufang Cangze sobbed into the table for a while, and then there was a long silence.
Shengyan’s heart skipped a beat. He was afraid the man had actually drunk himself to death. He went and pushed him. He was relieved to find that he had only fallen asleep.
Jiufang Cangze slept until late at night. He woke up in a daze, the effects of the alcohol still not completely gone.
Shengyan always ran up a tab and put it on the city lord’s account. After a while, the tavern owner successfully got his money and, knowing he was from the city lord’s manor, didn’t dare to kick them out.
Seeing that Jiufang Cangze was awake, Shengyan walked over and said with a grin, “How are you feeling, brother? Better now?”
Jiufang Cangze shook his head. The sadness in his heart couldn’t be numbed by wine. At least today was over, and the celebrations at the Thousand Thoughts Sect hadn’t reached his ears.
When they left the tavern, Shengyan was relieved to see that he was at least sober enough to tell which way was which. “It’s too late. I have to go back. Oh, right, brother, my name is Shengyan. Wanna be friends?”
Jiufang Cangze silently looked at the fist extended in front of him. Behind it was the young man’s brilliant smile.
It was how he and Lunling had once met.
“…Chuanze.” Their fists met. It was the first time Jiufang Cangze had a changed opinion of a mortal.
After they said goodbye, Shengyan returned to the city lord’s manor, and Jiufang Cangze limped back to the foot of the Snowy Peak.
It was so late that the Thousand Thoughts Sect’s curfew barrier was in place. He couldn’t go back to rest.
The Snowy Peak was covered in snow all year round. Jiufang Cangze, who was still hot from drinking, found a clean snowdrift and fell into it.
The cold snow quickly extinguished his heat.
He used the snow to wash his face. When he looked up, a beautiful firework display happened to catch his eye.
Then, countless beautiful fireworks blossomed on top of the Snowy Peak. The festive sounds of their explosions were endless.
Is this… a celebration of their wedding… Jiufang Cangze’s heart was desolate.
But before this, he had once prepared a grand coronation ceremony for Qiu Fuxue, one that would have been far more spectacular than these few fireworks. Unfortunately, things had changed.
Jiufang Cangze lay on his back in the snow. He suddenly felt thirsty, so he grabbed a handful of snow from under him and put it in his mouth.
The cold sensation exploded on his tongue, numbing his cheeks.
In a daze, a pure white figure seemed to appear in front of him.
“A-Xue…?”
He rubbed his eyes. His newly-healed eyes couldn’t see clearly, especially at night. He tried to look for a long time, but he couldn’t make out what the figure was.
Maybe it’s just a tree covered in white snow.
A self-mocking smile appeared on his lips. How could Qiu Fuxue come down to the mountain on his big day to see him?
He had drunk too much during the day, and his head was still spinning. He huddled up, hugging his arms, and fell asleep right there in the snowdrift.
In such a cold place, a normal person who slept for a night would only be a cold corpse the next day.
Qiu Fuxue silently walked forward a few steps, leaving no trace in the snow.
He looked down at Jiufang Cangze’s defenseless sleeping face. He waved his hand and set up a barrier around him to ward off the cold. Then, he turned around and went back up the mountain.
When Jiufang Cangze woke up the next day, he didn’t feel very cold. But he didn’t think too deeply about it, only assuming it was because of the climate of the Snowy Peak.
Looking at the rugged mountain road, he finally didn’t have the courage to climb up.
Forget it. This is probably as far as he and Qiu Fuxue will go.
Doing something was better than staying in one place and overthinking. Jiufang Cangze went into the city again. After a few steps, he was suddenly grabbed by the neck by a person who came out from behind him.
A familiar voice rang out. “Chuanze! Morning! How are you feeling? Still sad?”
Jiufang Cangze stumbled from the hug. After he managed to stabilize himself, he said in a muffled voice, “A little better. But… I still can’t forget.”
“Tsk!” Shengyan scratched his head again, racking his brain to help his new friend get over his heartbreak. “How about… you come with me on a trip?”
“Where to?”
Shengyan didn’t answer. He stepped back and looked him over. “How are your martial arts skills?”
Jiufang Cangze was silent for a moment. He had once been the best in the world. Now he was probably the worst. “…I know a little about swords, spears, and sticks.”
“Then it’s not a problem!” Shengyan’s eyes lit up. “My wife gave me a job. I have to go on a trip with a big shot to Moonrise City. I was afraid of getting bored on the way. How about you come with me?”
Moonrise City was very far north, so the weather would be colder. Jiufang Cangze’s injuries had not fully healed, so he shouldn’t be traveling long distances to such cold places.
But Shengyan was right. Going on a trip might make him forget his pain.
He agreed without much hesitation. With a companion, Shengyan was excited. He told him some important details and then asked him to go back and prepare. They would meet at the city gates in the evening.
A long journey would take at least ten to fifteen days. Although he was very reluctant, Jiufang Cangze went back up the mountain to report his absence to the disciple in charge of records.
In his heart, he still fantasized that if Qiu Fuxue couldn’t find him, he would feel more at ease after knowing his whereabouts.
The pain in his heart was too deep. He hadn’t even thought to wonder why, a day after the supposed betrothal, the Thousand Thoughts Sect was still so plain and undecorated.
The disciples’ attitude toward him was as bad as ever, but he had long been used to it. He went back to his room to pack his only set of clothes. He was ready to go down the mountain and wait at the city gates early.
However, when he passed the training grounds, he saw the neat row of weapons and suddenly felt a strong urge to train.
Since he had been born, Hengjiang had never left his hand. But now, even if another ten thousand years passed, that long spear that had once terrified all living beings would never appear again.
