After Her Death, They Begged for Forgiveness - Chapter 54
“The CT results are out. The patient’s organs are unharmed,” the doctor said. “There’s a mild concussion in the head, but a few days of rest should take care of it.”
The director let out a long sigh of relief.
Thank goodness. At least she wouldn’t have to consider replacing the actress.
“She can be transferred to a regular ward now. If there are no further issues, she can be discharged.”
The doctor was also surprised that the patient had fallen from such a height with almost no injuries. But after carefully reviewing the CT report, everything seemed normal. After giving the usual instructions, she left.
Even after hearing the diagnosis, Xu Bingqi’s gaze remained fixed on Song Guanjin.
It wasn’t that she doubted the doctor’s assessment, she was afraid the person lying in the hospital bed might suddenly transform into a cat, exposing the feline’s secret.
Fortunately, the person on the bed looked calm, with no signs of an imminent transformation.
After Song Guanjin was moved to a private room, Xu Bingqi turned to the director and said, “You should head back to the set. I’ll take care of things here.”
If the director stayed any longer and Song Guanjin really turned into a cat, things would get chaotic.
Xu Bingqi gently stroked Song Guanjin’s hair, thinking that if cat ears suddenly appeared, she could cover them immediately.
“Alright, I’ll leave it to you then,” the director replied. She had no desire to linger in the hospital room. There was too much to handle on set, and with the media likely catching wind of the incident soon, she needed to return and manage the situation.
In her unconscious state, Song Guanjin felt that something about her body had changed. Fragments of lost memories slowly pieced themselves together.
She remembered the shabby, cramped room and the pale, slender hand that had stroked her head.
So, the dream she’d had at the animal hospital was actually a memory.
“How about finding the cat a new owner? Then the cat could live in a big, big house with lots and lots of people who love her, and become the happiest cat in the whole world.”
It was Xu Bingqi’s voice from that memory, soft and fragmented.
Hearing it again, Song Guanjin felt as though her heart would break.
Such a kind, gentle sister had ended up in such a state.
The cat resolved then and there to share her lifespan with her sister. In this lifetime, she would make sure her sister remained safe and sound.
Song Guanjin continued piecing together the next fragment of memory.
After her sister fell gravely ill, she eventually passed away quietly on a sunny afternoon. No matter how much the cat nuzzled her hand, her sister no longer responded.
After a while, the cat noticed that her sister’s body was growing colder, as chilly as cold jade even in the sweltering summer heat.
Stunned, she froze in disbelief.
Her sister was truly gone, she had left before the cat could even take human form.
It was only a matter of a few hours.
If she had just managed to take human form and become her sister’s partner, she could have saved her life.
A miss is as good as a mile.
The cat sank into deep regret. If she had cultivated more diligently over the centuries, perhaps everything could have been salvaged after meeting her sister.
She might even have been able to meet her sister in human form and fall in love with her like an ordinary person.
The cat rested her head in her sister’s palm, determined to guard her sister’s soul.
She would always wait for her sister’s reincarnation.
However, a group of people carrying cameras barged uninvited into the cramped room, their eyes lighting up at the sight of her sister as if they had discovered a priceless treasure.
Blinding camera flashes erupted one after another, and some even attempted to step inside the room.
The cat’s mind exploded with fury, she would never let anyone take her sister away!
These people would only bring harm to her sister!
The cat felt herself descending into madness, letting out hoarse growls to drive away those ill-intentioned intruders.
“Look, there’s even a crazy cat here. Now we won’t have to worry about views,” she heard them excitedly discussing.
She viciously clawed at the calf of a reporter trying to force his way in. Drops of blood splattered from her claws onto the grimy wall, slowly trickling downward.
“Ouch, this cat really is insane. Let’s just kill it.”
“No, if we kill it, how will we generate buzz? As long as this cat is alive, we can keep reporting on it. Won’t that guarantee us views?”
The cat understood these people were nothing but parasites, feeding off her and her sister.
Just as she continued her frenzied attacks, she keenly sensed her sister’s soul rapidly departing from her body.
The cat halted her assault.
Souls weren’t supposed to leave this quickly unless they were about to transcend this time and space.
The cat swiftly turned around she had to follow her sister!
Otherwise, what would happen if those wicked people continued to torment her sister?
The reporter, who had been frantically dodging the cat’s attacks, suddenly realized the crazed feline had vanished.
“Where did that cat go?” he shouted to the others. “Did one of you kill it?”
“Impossible! Killing it would ruin our source of views!”
“Maybe it just ran off? It looked like a rabid stray anyway.”
By then, the cat spirit had already followed the trail of the soul and arrived three years in the past.
So there were others who had their eyes on her sister!
But her sister’s memories of the past three years had been reset to blank.
Her sister would neither remember her nor recall the tragic fate of being disgraced and abandoned by everyone.
In this state, her sister would still fall prey to those despicable schemers!
The cat felt it was her duty to prevent her sister from repeating the same mistakes in this life!
She would become her sister’s savior, rescuing her from suffering. They would cultivate together, share their lifespans, and ensure those villains faced retribution!
Filled with righteous indignation, the cat stood up, only to remember she was just a little cat spirit who had barely managed to take human form.
The simplest way to restore her sister’s memories of the past three years was through an exchange trading her own memories of the same period for her sister’s.
That way, her sister’s memories would be complete again.
The cat sighed. Her own memories of the past three years were trivial just eating and sleeping, utterly useless. They were perfect to exchange for her sister’s memories.
Only the memory of finally meeting her sister was too beautiful, the first time she had ever felt cherished, held gently in someone’s palms.
She was reluctant to let that go.
But compared to ensuring her sister remained clear-minded, these memories were insignificant.
She believed they could create even sweeter memories together in the future.
Her sister would become the happiest person in the world, and she would become the happiest cat.
With one last lingering gaze, the cat watched the memories of her playful moments with her sister slowly drift away from her soul, gradually dissolving into dust.
The fragments of lost memories pieced themselves together, yet Song Guanjin, still unconscious, found no sense of relief as she sorted through her recollections.
Why had falling from a great height allowed her to recall the events of the past three years?
And was this truly all the memories she had lost?
Logically, memories were difficult to actively retrieve, let alone through something as simple as a fall she hadn’t even lost any of her cultivation.
Song Guanjin shook her head, deciding not to dwell on these complicated matters. At that moment, she felt someone gently stroking the stray strands of hair on her forehead.
She sniffed lightly and caught the familiar, unique scent of her sister.
Song Guanjin kept her eyes closed, pretending to still be unconscious.
Her sister’s gentle caresses were simply irresistible to the cat, and the clever cat demon planned to enjoy it a little longer.
“Guanjin, are you awake?”
Xu Bingqi noticed the slight sniffing sound and asked softly.
Reluctantly, the cat opened her eyes and met Xu Bingqi’s caring gaze.
“Does it hurt? Should I call a doctor?” Xu Bingqi almost immediately stood up, only to be stopped as Song Guanjin grabbed her hand. “Sister, don’t call a doctor. I just want you to stay with me.”
She only needed her sister.
Xu Bingqi felt that the cat demon’s hand seemed softer than before, like smooth silk wrapping around her own, and she could feel her fingertips trembling slightly.
“I won’t leave. I’ll stay here with you.”
Xu Bingqi sat back down. “Would you like some water? Is there anything you’d like to do?”
Song Guanjin nodded. “Sister, could you feed me?”
Xu Bingqi picked up the glass of water, helped Song Guanjin sit up, and brought the glass to her rosy lips. “Drink.”
The cat demon felt a little disappointed she had hoped her sister would feed her mouth-to-mouth.
Leaning forward slightly, she drank from the glass in Xu Bingqi’s hand, her eyes fixed unwaveringly on her sister, her gaze as deep and tender as a lake brimming with emotion.
Xu Bingqi lowered her head, slightly avoiding the cat demon’s intense stare.
“Sister, I’m finished.”
Song Guanjin licked the corner of her lips, then felt a pang of frustration when she realized her sister hadn’t noticed.
Her sister was still acting so aloof and indifferent.
The cat demon pouted and glanced at her sister’s fingers, which still held the glass.
From frequently playing musical instruments, Xu Bingqi’s fingertips were covered with a thin layer of calluses, her nails neatly trimmed and clean, gleaming with a pearl-like luster.
The cat demon lowered her head and took her sister’s fingers into her mouth.
Xu Bingqi felt her fingers enter a warm, moist mouth. Her grip loosened in surprise, and the glass shattered on the floor.
She hastily pulled her hand back, the sound of her fingers leaving Song Guanjin’s warm mouth accompanied by a soft, ambiguous wet noise.
“Song Guanjin!” Xu Bingqi’s cheeks flushed as she softly scolded the smug-looking cat demon. “Don’t do that.”
She felt that ever since waking up in the hospital bed, the cat demon had grown increasingly bold.
“It’s fine.” The cat demon knew her sister couldn’t bring herself to be harsh and took advantage of it. “When I turned into a pomegranate before, I did the same thing, and you didn’t stop me then.”
Xu Bingqi sighed. Song Guanjin had too many twisted arguments, and she often found herself unable to refute them.
“No matter what form I take, I’ll always be me.” The cat demon anticipated what Xu Bingqi was about to say. “Sister, you’ll get used to it eventually.”
And she would definitely help her sister develop this good habit.
Xu Bingqi remained silent for a moment before standing up to sweep away the shards of glass on the floor.
Song Guanjin felt a surge of satisfaction, noticing the blush spreading across her sister’s cheek.
The vibrant red crept from her originally fair skin all the way to the tips of her ears, resembling peach blossoms in full bloom during spring.
The cat felt that after waking up, it seemed to have become more perceptive than before.
After silently cleaning up the glass fragments, Xu Bingqi suddenly lowered her gaze to Song Guanjin, who appeared to be deep in thought. “Do you remember how you fell? Was it really an accident?”
She had always felt that there was more to the incident.
–
In another high-end private hospital room, the atmosphere was so stifling it felt hard to breathe.
Xu Qingci lay on the hospital bed, staring blankly at the ceiling with suppressed emotions.
Once, she had been the most important person in her daughter’s heart, but now she couldn’t even compare to her daughter’s friend.
“Her friend’s examination results only showed a few minor scratches, right?”
The assistant nodded silently before adding, “Ms. Xu, perhaps Miss Xu is temporarily unable to get away.”
Although the excuse sounded feeble, she couldn’t think of any other way to comfort Xu Qingci.
Xu Qingci shook her head.
Even with just minor scratches, Xu Bingqi would rather stay in her friend’s room than come to see her.
“Does she not know which room I’m in?” Xu Qingci closed her eyes. “Did you tell her where I am?”
“I’ve already informed Miss Xu.”
She still remembered the startled look in Xu Bingqi’s eyes when she saw her. At that time, Xu Bingqi had been leaning very close to the person in the hospital bed, as if whispering something.
The assistant was also taken aback. The fact that Xu Bingqi preferred chatting with her friend over taking care of Xu Qingci showed just how distant their relationship had become.
“It’s fine.” Xu Qingci sighed. “If she doesn’t want to come, then so be it.”
Yet her gaze remained fixed on the closed door, as if expecting something.
Perhaps, in the end, her daughter would soften.
She didn’t ask for much only hoping that her daughter would come to see her again, to look at her with that same worried expression.
Xu Qingci didn’t know how long she had been staring when the door finally opened and a familiar figure walked in.
“Sorry, I forgot to knock.” Xu Bingqi’s expression was calm. “I came here because I feel there are some things that need to be clarified once and for all, so we don’t hold any more unrealistic expectations of each other.”
Xu Qingci opened her mouth, unsure of what to say. The moment Xu Bingqi finished speaking, she regretted everything.
She could sense that things were about to spiral into an irreversible situation.
