- Chapter 27 - Shimmering Fragments of Memory
Sang Luo moved efficiently, finishing several cups of milk tea before packing them for the customers. His movements possessed an indescribable aesthetic; his slender fingers were particularly pleasing to the eye. Every time he turned, he revealed a slender waist, followed by straight, long legs clad in a pair of thin ankle boots.
Sang Luo’s beauty was not confined by gender or social norms. It was a heart-stopping kind of beauty that made everyone realize Sang Luo was truly a favorite of the Creator.
Of course, not everyone appreciated this with good intentions. Take Liu Zhiya, for instance; every time she looked at him, she wished she could tear that face apart. She felt that such a face was wasted on Sang Luo and harbored a ridiculous sense of unfairness.
Another hour passed. During this time, Sang Luo remained busy, while Liu Zhiya leisurely ate fruit, occasionally putting on a display to show how much her wound hurt. It was a sickening performance. She believed her excuse would shield her from criticism, unaware that she was being lambasted by the viewers.
[I am gagging. That scratch is not even as long as a fingernail. Is this necessary?] [Exactly. If you took that wound to the hospital, the doctor would say that it is a good thing you came early, otherwise it would have healed already.] [Delicacy is fine, but Liu Zhiya is just being dramatic.] [No wonder she rarely went on variety shows before. It seems her manager was afraid of exposing her true colors.] [I really want to know if Liu Zhiya’s family owns a gold mine. Being this blatantly obnoxious, is she not afraid of being blacklisted?]
The number of people speaking up for Liu Zhiya had significantly dwindled; some even felt that being her fan was a mark of shame. Though she still had a few mindless followers trying to argue, they were quickly drowned out by the sea of negative comments.
As for why Liu Zhiya was acting out so much, it traced back to the end of the first week after everyone had left. Liu Zhiya had debuted as a child star and had been in the industry for years. With her distinctive looks, she had once been quite famous and was pampered into a state of arrogance. But in recent years, many newcomers had emerged, and many had become popular. Gradually, Liu Zhiya’s fame faded.
However, after she intentionally picked a fight with Sang Luo in the first week, her popularity saw a sudden resurgence. As her manager put it, “Negative fame is still fame.” Since then, she had become even more unrestrained, almost enjoying the notoriety. Liu Zhiya was not young anymore, she was nearing thirty, and she wanted to take this chance to make one last fortune before retiring from the industry. Unfortunately, she was destined to be disappointed; before long, she would receive the retribution she deserved.
After finishing the last few orders, Sang Luo tidied up and prepared to close the shop. He took out all the money earned for the day and then set thirty yuan on the counter. Having done this, he tucked the rest away and turned to leave.
Liu Zhiya was stunned. “What do you mean? Are you planning to pocket everything?”
Sang Luo gestured toward the thirty yuan on the counter and said coldly, “Yours.”
“On what grounds?” Liu Zhiya’s voice was incredibly shrill. “I am telling you, you better give it to me right now, or do not blame me for being unkind!”
“Unkind?” A thin, icy chill flashed in Sang Luo’s eyes, and his expression sharpened. “What right do you have to demand anything from me? Based on your laziness and slacking off?”
Sang Luo put on his coat, his dark eyes sinking and his voice sounding like a bitter winter wind. “That thirty is for watching the door so well. Consider it a tip.”
He pushed open the door and departed, the tips of his jet-black hair flashing briefly in the air before vanishing into the cold wind with his retreating back.
Liu Zhiya, the target of his sarcasm, turned pale with rage, her eyes bloodshot and her body trembling uncontrollably. She stared fixedly at Sang Luo’s retreating figure, wishing she could swallow him alive. She quickly reacted and then squatted on the ground in front of the livestream, weeping softly. She assumed Sang Luo had simply given up on his image and no longer cared about the cameras. In that case, she did not mind adding fuel to the fire by labeling him as arrogant and someone who acts like a big shot.
However, she did not realize that the audience was not buying it.
When Sang Luo returned, he was hit by a sudden wave of exhaustion. He could not suppress a few coughs. Looking up, he saw Huo Xun on the sofa with Chen Jing clutching one of his arms.
Upon meeting Sang Luo’s gaze, Huo Xun quickly shook Chen Jing off. Just as he was about to explain, the youth went straight upstairs. The culprit, hiding his smugness, said bashfully, “I thought I saw a bug there and got a fright. Please do not mind me.”
Huo Xun’s deep gaze swept over Chen Jing, his icy intent seemingly seeing through everything. “Never again.”
Chen Jing shuddered, his expression showing a flash of panic. Knowing his little trick had been discovered and that Huo Xun was warning him, he stammered, “Okay.”
Liu Zhiya, who had entered behind them already fuming, saw the intimacy between Chen Jing and Huo Xun, and her emotions were instantly ignited.
“Chen Jing, it seems you have become quite familiar with CEO Huo these past two days. Do you have intentions of entering the industry?” Liu Zhiya sat opposite the two, trying her best to suppress her emotions, but her tone was still aggressive. “CEO Huo, Chen Jing is actually quite talented. Last weekend, I accidentally learned that he is a somewhat famous painter. I just do not know why he was disqualified from the last competition.”
Chen Jing’s face turned ashen upon hearing this, but he could only grit his teeth and reply, “I was sick at the time, so that was the only way.”
“Is that so?” Liu Zhiya let out a laugh of ambiguous meaning. “That is a bit different from what I heard, but perhaps I remembered it wrong.”
Panic was written all over Chen Jing’s face, but mindful of the cameras, he dared not let it show. “Then you must have remembered wrong. I was feeling very unwell then, acute gastritis, so I had to withdraw.”
“I see.” Liu Zhiya enjoyed the man’s silent pleading. “Then make sure to grasp the opportunity next time. You should also be more discerning, otherwise, things could get very ugly.”
At this point, Chen Jing would have to be an idiot not to understand that this was a blatant threat. “I understand.”
Liu Zhiya let out a light hum, her face filled with the triumph of a winner. Huo Xun had no time to listen to their bickering; he had to think of a way to coax Sang Luo. As the two beside him continued talking, Huo Xun’s face showed unmasked irritation. He stood up, stepped past them, took a fresh cake from the fridge, and headed upstairs.
The two ignored individuals did not need to guess who it was for. The faces of the two who were just at each other’s throats simultaneously turned a matching shade of livid green. Of course, no one cared about their feelings.
Huo Xun stood before Sang Luo’s door, hesitating. He calmed his breathing and knocked. “It is me. Are you asleep?”
There was no sound from inside for a long while. Huo Xun knocked again. “Asleep?”
He felt a sense of doubt, his narrow, deep eyes fixed on the door. Then, a distinct thud came from inside. Huo Xun could no longer restrain himself. Anxiety filled his face, and his voice turned hoarse. “Sang Luo? What happened? Open the door!”
It remained quiet. There was no response.
Huo Xun’s eyes were filled with worry. He muttered a quick apology and then used his strength to open the door. In the darkened room, Sang Luo lay quietly on the bed, his breathing extremely faint.
Huo Xun’s eyes nearly split from the sight; the sudden scene caused him to lose his composure. He strode over and grabbed the youth’s hand. “Sang Luo?”
His voice trembled; anyone could hear the grief within. Fragmented, flickering memories flashed rapidly through Huo Xun’s mind. He could only see Sang Luo in that same lifeless state.
[THE END]
