- Chapter 15 - Live a Good Life
Huo Xun was no longer defenseless. He removed every object from the room that could be used as a weapon, not because he feared being hurt, but because he feared Sang Luo would harm himself. He could tell Sang Luo’s state of mind was deteriorating; in his increasing silence, the youth often watched him with a gaze bordering on madness.
Huo Xun felt an indescribable bitterness. Sang Luo, the legitimate son of the Minister’s estate, had once been renowned throughout the capital for his peerless talent. Now, the once high-spirited Lord Qingyuan had been reduced to this. Perhaps imprisoning Sang Luo by his side was not the right decision, but they had reached a point of no return. He knew that letting Sang Luo go would be like releasing a tiger back to its mountain, yet he could not stand by and watch this man destroy himself in a desperate struggle.
“I said we could talk,” Huo Xun began.
Sang Luo gazed silently out the window, offering no word in response.
“Can you let go of the hatred?”
Sang Luo gave a cold laugh. “No.”
“Can we talk?”
“No.”
Huo Xun felt helpless. “Have you ever considered that when your father had someone take you away, it was so you could start over, not so you could keep spinning in circles?”
“Do you have parents?” Sang Luo asked tonelessly.
“Yes.” Huo Xun paused. “They passed away.”
“If I had committed treason and caused the death of your parents, would you let go of your hatred and forgive me?”
The naked malice in Sang Luo’s eyes pinned Huo Xun to the spot, making him unable to move. After a moment, he said hoarsely, “It is not the same.”
“How is it different?” Sang Luo looked up with a sudden, airy smile. “Because I committed treason? And how do you know my father was not framed? Are you not simply an accomplice to a tyrant?”
Huo Xun’s breath hitched. He stood up abruptly, turned around, and left without a word.
In the days that followed, Huo Xun investigated the Minister’s estate frantically, even disturbing the Emperor. From the Son of Heaven himself, he learned the truth: An innocent man may be found guilty simply because he possesses something valuable. This realization hit him like a physical blow. His years of loyalty crumbled in an instant. That evening, he found Sang Luo in a daze, the smile on his face looking more painful than tears. “Tomorrow, I will take you out for a walk.”
Sang Luo seemed to understand his meaning and finally agreed.
The next day, the two wandered aimlessly. Sang Luo remained detached, but as they looked upon the green mountains, listened to the streams, and breathed the sweet air, they experienced a sense of relaxation they had never known before.
“Do you want to return to the General’s estate or stay here?”
“Go back.”
The smile on Huo Xun’s face stiffened for a moment before he regained his composure. “Alright. Let us go back.”
As they crossed the high threshold of the General’s estate, everything looked the same, but the mindset of the two men had completely changed.
“Drink with me.” Huo Xun produced two jars of wine and poured them into cups. The wine rippled under the moonlight, and a gentle breeze made the night exceptionally pleasant. They raised their cups to one another. Huo Xun smiled with a sense of relief. “I hope you obtain what you wish for in the future.”
Sang Luo nodded and drained his cup in one go. With a faint sound, something was pressed into Sang Luo’s hand. It was an exquisite dagger, shimmering with a nearly sacred silver light under the moon. Sang Luo stared at it for a long time. When the blade left its sheath, it was sharp enough to seemingly cut through the air itself.
“Take it, and live a good life.”
As blood poured out, Huo Xun collapsed to the ground. He looked up at the horizon and said fitfully, “The moonlight tonight is beautiful.”
Sang Luo’s expression was perfectly calm, but only he knew that his hand was trembling uncontrollably.
“Are you Luoluo?”
Sang Luo took a green jade pendant from his robe. “Yes.”
“It really is you.” Huo Xun’s breathing grew faint, yet he looked happy. He knew he was not a shallow person; his attraction to Sang Luo was rooted in a promise they had made long ago. Sadly, things had changed, and they had finally reached this end.
“Leave.” Huo Xun’s voice was barely audible, but Sang Luo heard it.
“Alright.”
Sang Luo turned to leave but suddenly stopped. He walked back to Huo Xun’s side, closed the man’s eyelids, and whispered, “We shall never meet again.”
This time, he truly left. Huo Xun, his life slipping away, smiled. “That is good.”
A great fire swept through the General’s estate, burning everything to ash. With the light of the flames at his back, Sang Luo walked further and further away. In the final scene, amidst a flurry of fine snow, Sang Luo looked at the jade pendant for a long time. Then, facing the biting wind, he leaped from the edge of the cliff.
The observers outside the scene held their breath, immersed in the acting of Sang Luo and Huo Xun. Some emotional staff members even burst into tears. No one expected Sang Luo’s acting to be so profound, nor that the two of them could bring these characters to life so vividly.
On stage, Huo Xun stood up. He wiped the fake blood from the corner of his mouth and smiled normally. “Crying?”
“The acting was too good; I could not help it.”
“Honestly, I did not expect the result to be this amazing.”
With a lingering smile in his eyes, Huo Xun turned to find Sang Luo. To his surprise, the youth was still lying on the floor, his face as calm as if he were asleep. Huo Xun was startled. “Sang Luo?”
His voice trembling, he reached out to check for a heartbeat, then let out a sigh of relief. “Sang Luo, wake up.”
A moment later, Sang Luo opened his eyes, which were filled with intense agony. Huo Xun saw immediately that Sang Luo had not yet emerged from the character; he was still immersed in the sorrow of not having died. This was not a good sign. He realized that Sang Luo’s method of acting involved becoming the character, which led to him being too deeply involved and finding it difficult to detach.
Amidst his worry, Sang Luo finally recovered. He stood up, gave Huo Xun a cold glance, and nodded slightly. “I am fine.”
Huo Xun stood up as well, hiding the loneliness in his eyes. “It is good that you are fine.” He then knit his brows as if lost in thought.
“Sang Luo’s performance was excellent; it exceeded my expectations,” Bai Chen said with a smile. “Your acting is better than most.”
“Thank you.” Despite the praise, Sang Luo showed no emotional fluctuation. He only felt exhausted. He had always known that acting was not a simple task.
With Bai Chen’s affirmation, Sang Luo gained a large number of followers. These were not just casual fans of his looks, but people who truly appreciated his talent.
[This is incredible. I recorded it. I knew Sang Luo was something else when he appeared, but I did not expect him to be this good. Too bad I missed the beginning.]
[Agreed. It was like he drew everyone into the story. I do not know much about acting, but I thought he was phenomenal.]
[I have the full recording. Follow me if you want it; I will send it to you.]
[I have it too; I have already posted it on the platform. Go check it out.]
[This tragic romance killed me. Sang Luo was so captivating as the songstress.]
[I am a career fan, but Sang Luo is still my wife. I am just encouraging her to work; is there a problem?]
[The person above is dreaming; Luoluo is my wife.]
[Anyway, I wanted to ask: is he really a civilian? A wolf in sheep’s clothing?]
[The show never said Sang Luo was a passerby; you just assumed he was.]
[True, they never specified if he was an actor or a civilian. Does that mean Luoluo is an actor?]
[THE END]
