- Chapter 12 - An Unexpected Accident
Because the guests used their real names in the performance, the scene felt slightly surreal, though it did not hinder the quality of the acting. This particular segment was highly anticipated. As a renowned Movie King, Bai Chen’s live performance with A-list star Liu Zhiya promised high-caliber results.
Their script was significantly more mature. Bai Chen played a lawyer, while Liu Zhiya played a white-collar professional. They were once in a romantic relationship but had broken up amicably after university graduation for various reasons. They met in a café, and the scene was devoid of exaggerated emotions or overt sentimentality; they were both remarkably calm. It was like a reunion between old friends with the conversation flowing pleasantly.
Bai Chen wore gold-rimmed glasses, which softened his features. His natural temperament leaned toward the refined, and the glasses only enhanced this quality. He sat opposite Liu Zhiya and calmly ordered coffee for them both.
“You still remember my taste?” Liu Zhiya’s styling suited her unexpectedly well. Her long hair was tied back, and she wore a sharp professional suit.
“Of course. After all, we were together for a long time,” Bai Chen replied with a smile. “How have you been lately?”
“Quite well,” Liu Zhiya said candidly. “Every day is fulfilling. I have my share of worries, but I have already obtained what I wanted.”
“It seems our parting was a good choice.” Bai Chen pushed up his glasses, his well-defined features appearing slightly sharper.
“Do you have a girlfriend? Someone as excellent as you must have many pursuers,” Liu Zhiya remarked, taking a sip of coffee with a lingering smile.
“No, being alone is quite nice,” Bai Chen replied, wiping his hands with a tissue. “Freedom.”
Instead of continuing her lines, Liu Zhiya reached out to grab the tissue box near Bai Chen’s hand. Whether intentionally or not, her fingers brushed against his.
“We think alike,” Liu Zhiya said with a soft laugh. “Since we separated, our perspectives have become surprisingly similar.”
“Mm.” Bai Chen’s expression turned cold. He unobtrusively wiped the spot where she had touched him, a dark glint in his eyes like a crouching beast.
“Time is limited; I must go,” Liu Zhiya said, picking up her bag. “See you around.”
As she left, she again brushed against Bai Chen as if by accident, even lingering for a moment. She did not know that Bai Chen, his head slightly lowered, hid a flash of murderous intent that he only barely managed to suppress.
The others were generous with their applause. Bai Chen took off his glasses and looked at the group with a bright smile. “Was that alright?”
“It was fine,” Qin Yibing chimed in. “Movie King Bai should go change; your clothes are dirty.”
Bai Chen laughed, his eyes full of appreciation. “Naturally.”
Some did not quite catch the subtext of their exchange, but there were plenty of astute observers in the livestream.
[You can tell he really despises a certain someone.] [Maybe you are overthinking it? It could just be a problem with the clothes.] [Upstairs, do you think anyone believes that?] [That certain someone is something else, flirting with this one and then that one. The close-ups captured it all. Truly speechless.] [Her persona has been on the verge of collapsing, but this time it really shattered.]
Regardless of what people said, Liu Zhiya herself did not feel she had done anything wrong. She had merely been testing the waters to see if Bai Chen had feelings for her. Although Bai Chen was not quite on Huo Xun’s level, he was still someone worth generating hype with. However, she was disappointed by his cold reaction.
The next scene was about to begin, and everyone shifted their attention. The production team’s reason for the performance task was not just to let the guests show off; it was also to increase the entertainment value. The center-piece of the task was a comedic script, usually placed in the middle. For this session, the comedy script was drawn by An Yushu and Chen Jing.
They were performing a “Mary Sue” overbearing CEO script. An Yushu was the “White Lotus” female lead, and Chen Jing was the greasy CEO. The plot involved the two separating years ago due to a misunderstanding, only to meet again by chance on a rainy day. The female lead was heartbroken, and the male lead immediately gave chase. She flees, he pursues; she cannot escape even with wings. Eventually, they reconciled, and years of misunderstanding turned to dust.
An Yushu appeared first, wearing a somewhat tight-fitting dress and a wig with light makeup. Thus styled, he actually looked quite a bit like a girl. He stood at the entrance of a supermarket holding groceries, his expression anxious. The scene was set during a rainstorm, but since they were indoors with no specialized set, they had to act as if it were raining.
An Yushu was a shy person and felt quite constrained, making his movements appear somewhat stiff. “This rain.” He let out a soft sigh, disappointment etching his face. “When can I go home?” His eyes reddened with grievance. “Qiuqiu is still waiting for me at home.”
After waiting a few more minutes, the rain showed no signs of stopping. An Yushu gritted his teeth. “Forget it, I will just run to the parking lot.” He suited his action to his words, taking small, quick steps toward the parking area.
However, as he reached for his keys, he froze. Across from his car stood a familiar man.
“Shushu!” Chen Jing’s expression was wildly exaggerated, making people want to laugh. “Is it really you?” He clutched his heart, taking several steps back in disbelief. “Where have you been all these years?”
An Yushu immediately dropped his groceries and ran. He sobbed, looking utterly heartbroken.
“No!” Chen Jing’s eyes widened. “Don’t go!”
The two engaged in a slow-motion chase that left the livestream viewers in stitches. Finally, through Chen Jing’s efforts, he managed to grab the person in front of him. “Shushu, please stop running, okay?”
An Yushu did not speak, only faking a sob.
“Stop crying; it breaks my heart.” Chen Jing patted his chest and shook his head vigorously. “Don’t be afraid. I know I misunderstood you.”
“Really?” An Yushu looked up. “Have you forgiven me?”
“Of course.” Chen Jing pulled An Yushu into a dramatic, sweeping turn, then held him while they gazed deeply into each other’s eyes. “I only believe in you.”
Before An Yushu could finish, Chen Jing pulled him again with a burst of strength, spinning him once more. “Come back with me.”
“But Qiuqiu is waiting for me.” After a moment of internal struggle, An Yushu’s gaze became firm. “No, I have to go back. I cannot leave it behind.”
“Could it be that Qiuqiu is our child?” Chen Jing was shocked and looked grief-stricken. “I have failed you.”
“No,” An Yushu sobbed. “It is my pet.”
“You are so kind.” Chen Jing was deeply moved. “You care so much even for a pet. When we have children in the future, you will surely be a wonderful mother.”
“Really?” An Yushu acted bashful. “I will I be?”
Chen Jing took a deep breath, looking intoxicated. “Of course. Believe me, I love you.”
The performance ended there. Although it was incredibly cringey and completely devoid of logic, no one minded. It was, after all, a comedy script.
However, an accident occurred. On a sudden whim, Chen Jing decided to lead An Yushu in an impromptu waltz. After a few movements, a sharp ripping sound echoed, and An Yushu froze completely.
Everyone heard the sound. Only Sang Luo reacted instantly. He grabbed his jacket, walked over in a few quick strides, and draped it over An Yushu’s shoulders.
“Are you okay?”
The color returned to An Yushu’s pale face, and his heart suddenly raced. Looking at the young man’s cool, detached features, he blushed uncontrollably.
“I am fine.”
