After Flirting with the God-Tier Beautiful Tycoon - Chapter 63.1
Before Shen Xiaojiang had even finished fastening her belt, the car shot out with the speed of the wind. She lurched forward violently. By the time she managed to sit upright, she was frowning, wondering if she had boarded a “thief’s ship.”
Then she heard Bai Shuhua’s hearty laughter: “Just a joke, don’t mind me.”
Shen Xiaojiang: “…” It wasn’t funny at all.
Wanning Electronics’ headquarters was in Nancheng, with subsidiaries all over the country. Their new projects over the last two years were mostly being conducted in the United States. Therefore, joining the new R&D team meant spending a period of time in America. Because this was considered an overseas assignment, the salary would be much higher than staying domestic.
Of course, not just anyone could be recruited into the new R&D team to participate in the development of new projects. Such things usually had nothing to do with an intern. Thus, Shen Xiaojiang listened to Bai Shuhua’s words casually, letting them go in one ear and out the other.
“You haven’t had lunch yet, right?” Bai Shuhua asked.
Shen Xiaojiang gave a noncommittal hum.
Bai Shuhua smiled. “I’ll speed up. If we get to headquarters soon, we can still catch the staff lunch.”
The red sports car roared to a halt in front of the Wanning Electronic Technology building. Bai Shuhua led Shen Xiaojiang into the first-floor lobby.
“This is our headquarters. All interns must first work as clerks here for a period to understand the company’s overall framework.” From the moment Bai Shuhua stepped through the company doors, she shed her casual, lazy demeanor. Her behavior and speech became professional and serious.
Looking at the majestic, high-tech reception hall, Shen Xiaojiang felt a sense of awe. Having spent so many years in an ivory tower, she knew very little about the corporate world. Everything here was fresh to her.
The people here were either walking in a hurry or moving with purpose some were talking on two phones at once, others were clutching folders while scrolling through tablets. It was busy and fast-paced.
“In our company, if you don’t chase time, you’ll be eliminated by it,” Bai Shuhua said with a smile, taking a temporary ID badge from the front desk and handing it to Shen Xiaojiang.
When she worked part-time at the pet shop, she had often fantasized about what kind of job she would find in the future. Could she really find a good job doing what she dreamed of just because she liked coding?
Though she didn’t know exactly what Bai Shuhua wanted her to see, or what the specific work here entailed, at this moment, Shen Xiaojiang had a goal.
This goal was a reflection of Chen Yi, like a phantom silhouette. She wanted to make herself strong.
“You can go your whole life without climbing a mountain, but you must have a mountain in your heart.”
“Having nothing is the reason to fight with your life.”
“Either don’t be a person, or be the strongest person.”
These were the things Chen Yi had taught her. She wouldn’t forget; she couldn’t forget.
Driven by an unknown emotion, Shen Xiaojiang felt a sudden sense of belonging to the professional world. She gripped the ID card in her hand, released it, and gripped it again. She repeated this several times.
Passing through the security gates, Shen Xiaojiang followed Bai Shuhua to the elevators. Two gunmetal colored elevators were embedded in the black and gold marble wall, looking both solemn and grand.
Shen Xiaojiang’s fingers tightened on her ID badge; a strange tension traveled up from her fingertips. The surface of the acrylic badge was frosted, feeling slightly rough against her skin. It felt like a certain fabric, or perhaps a certain person’s skin.
Ding-dong! Both elevators opened simultaneously.
As the elevator in front of Shen Xiaojiang opened, several people stepped out, while others queued behind them to board. Those getting off politely greeted “President Bai.” Those waiting to board didn’t dare go ahead of the two of them, waiting obediently behind.
Bai Shuhua smiled and gestured “after you” to Shen Xiaojiang again.
Just as the elevator door beside them opened, Shen Xiaojiang summoned her courage and stepped forward. Her legs were long she entered the elevator in two strides.
At that moment, the sound of high heels clicking on the floor came from the other elevator bank. Light yet steady, crisp and pleasant. It stepped with a calm rhythm right onto Shen Xiaojiang’s heart.
Her loosened fingers tightened again, the acrylic badge digging into her palm so hard it nearly cut through her palm lines.
Bai Shuhua’s eyes were calm as she casually pressed the “close door” button.
As the elevator doors closed rapidly, in that tiny, shrinking gap, Shen Xiaojiang caught a glimpse of a white hemline. The fabric of the skirt was stiff and thick, printed with a faint pattern simple and understated, yet grand and elegant. At a glance, one could tell it was of superior quality. The high slit looked exactly like… a qipao?
Shen Xiaojiang’s heart leaped into her throat. She couldn’t be sure, and she didn’t dare be sure.
The elevator stopped and started until only Shen Xiaojiang and Bai Shuhua remained inside.
“Sorry about that. The clerks’ office is on the thirty-second floor,” Bai Shuhua’s voice echoed in the enclosed space, sounding muffled.
Shen Xiaojiang cast a sincere, unpretentious glance her way. According to Bai Shuhua’s introduction, Wanning headquarters had thirty-two floors in total. It turned out the “clerk’s office” was on the top floor. Many employees disliked this arrangement, but Shen Xiaojiang thought it was cool. When her eyes were tired, she could push open the emergency exit door, slip onto the deserted rooftop, and enjoy the scenery from the lonely heights.
“Student Shen, what are you smiling at?”
“Ah?” Shen Xiaojiang briefly forgot the white hemline she had just seen and shook her head. “Nothing.”
“Aren’t you going to wear this?” Bai Shuhua raised her hand, casually pointing to the temporary ID badge Shen Xiaojiang was clutching in her palm.
The elevator doors opened, and Shen Xiaojiang put on the badge with both hands. Bai Shuhua watched her, her gaze lingering on Shen Xiaojiang’s fair, slender fingers.
“Student Shen,” she called out, “your fingers are quite long.”
Shen Xiaojiang looked down at her fingers, moved them slightly, rubbed the edge of a neat fingernail, and gave a faint reply.
“Fingers this beautiful aren’t suited for clicking away at code and programming all day.” Bai Shuhua’s eyes crinkled as a smile slipped through her teeth, as if she were intentionally hinting at something.
Shen Xiaojiang looked at her, unsure of what the other woman was trying to express. Of course, she was never interested in other people’s double meanings.
She just suddenly remembered that Chen Yi had also praised her hands. At the time, she had been glad that the length of her fingers made it easy to find the other person’s sensitive spots. Then, with just a gentle stir, tears, sweat, and other unknown droplets would fall everywhere like rain.
“I think they are suited,” Shen Xiaojiang replied solemnly.
Bai Shuhua leaned closer. Wearing high heels, she was about three centimeters taller than Shen Xiaojiang. She lowered her gaze, looking at Shen Xiaojiang’s short but thick eyelashes. “Perhaps you could do something else.”
Shen Xiaojiang frowned slightly and looked up to meet Bai Shuhua’s eyes. Just as she was about to speak, Bai Shuhua cut her off: “For example, R&D and internal testing.”
Shen Xiaojiang breathed a sigh of relief and nodded quickly.
Bai Shuhua took Shen Xiaojiang to tour the offices, meeting rooms, pantry, and smoking area one by one. Afterward, they needed to head to another floor.
When they arrived at the elevator, it happened to stop at their floor. Bai Shuhua suddenly noticed that Shen Xiaojiang’s ID badge wasn’t sitting right. Being somewhat of a perfectionist, she instinctively raised both hands to help Shen Xiaojiang adjust her collar.
She lifted the shirt collar to tuck the badge strap underneath.
At that exact moment, the elevator doors slowly slid open.
The first thing to drift out was a faint, woody, cold fragrance. Spicy pepper, faint white rose, dry wood, and fresh papyrus it smelled like hospital disinfectant yet also like a wilderness where no one had ever stepped. It was incredibly distinct one whiff was enough to remember it for a lifetime.
Shen Xiaojiang felt as if she were frozen in place by this unique, singular scent, unable to move an inch.
Bai Shuhua’s fingertips brushed lightly against the thin fabric of Shen Xiaojiang’s collar, and then she gripped her shoulder, lingering for a moment. After seeing clearly who was in the elevator, she spoke with a rare, perhaps even deliberate, tone:
“Oh? Isn’t this Chen Little Seven?”
A three person “cremona” (shura field).
