After Flirting with the God-Tier Beautiful Tycoon - Chapter 34
Shen Xiaojiang let Chen Yi get into the car first. The moment she sat down beside her, she felt her heart racing.
She turned her head from time to time to look at the person next to her, repeatedly confirming that this wasn’t a dream.
Chen Yi was looking at the streets outside the window, her long eyelashes saturated with the kaleidoscopic lights of the city.
So beautiful, so gentle.
She looked like an Impressionist painting, composed of elegant lines and spectral colors.
Unconsciously, Shen Xiaojiang’s gaze became fixed on her.
It seemed that at this moment, Chen Yi was her entire world.
Having not taken a taxi in a long time, Chen Yi was a bit unaccustomed to it, moving stiffly and uncomfortably.
Shen Xiaojiang noticed and turned her body halfway toward her. “Auntie.”
“Hmm?” Chen Yi turned her head abruptly, looking at Shen Xiaojiang with a hint of helplessness.
Rarely being alone with Shen Xiaojiang, she didn’t want her behavior to seem pretentious. Lately, she had been constantly worried that she wasn’t presenting her best self in front of the girl.
In truth, it wasn’t pretension; the environment of the taxi simply reminded her of the past.
Many years ago, it was a taxi just like this that had taken her from the countryside of Nancheng to the city center to that most prosperous and lucrative den of gold, the “Venus” bar.
Since then, she had never truly left.
“Motion sick?” Shen Xiaojiang asked while rolling down the window a bit.
Chen Yi blinked but didn’t answer.
Shen Xiaojiang looked out the window and then back at Chen Yi, smiling. “I know you can drive, but I often hear my mom say that people who are used to driving themselves usually get motion sick when they sit in someone else’s car.”
After speaking, Shen Xiaojiang pursed her lips and smiled, revealing an innocent and adorable expression.
Chen Yi dazed for a moment perhaps her state was indeed a form of motion sickness.
She liked this expression of Shen Xiaojiang’s liked it very much.
She wasn’t sick from the car she was “sick” with Shen Xiaojiang.
And that… wasn’t so bad.
After staring blankly for two seconds, she relaxed her brow. Her expression became calm and soft, her voice lingering. “If you say so, then it is.”
“Little girl, you’re not wrong! I’m an old driver with thirty years behind the wheel, and I always get sick when I sit in someone else’s car. Even motion sickness pills don’t help!” The taxi driver agreed with Shen Xiaojiang, his aging, smiling face reflected in the rearview mirror.
“Right? Right!” Shen Xiaojiang leaned forward slightly. “It seems many people have this trouble.”
“Exactly. I can drive anywhere and be fine,” the driver said. “But sit in someone else’s car for five minutes, and my head spins, my chest feels tight, it’s awful!”
The two chatted back and forth for a while.
Chen Yi didn’t hear exactly what they were saying.
What truly attracted her wasn’t the trivial conversation, but Shen Xiaojiang’s clean, fresh smile and her natural charisma.
What was she doing when she was Shen Xiaojiang’s age?
She had already learned many devious tactics, had become cold-blooded and numb, and had thrown away her so-called self-respect and bottom lines.
Moreover, she had never laughed so genuinely.
Much less could she have shown kindness and chatted casually with a stranger met by chance.
Since taking over “Venus,” Chen Yi’s smiles were always purposeful designed to flatter those so-called “people of value.”
Shen Xiaojiang was different. Her smiles were sincere, her emotions came from the heart, and her kindness could be extended to anyone.
A colleague at a part-time pet shop job, an elderly taxi driver, an old classmate she hadn’t seen in two years anyone.
She appeared to be a lone figure, yet she possessed the whole world.
While Chen Yi appeared to be surrounded by people, yet she had nothing.
The hem of Shen Xiaojiang’s shirt rested on the back seat.
Chen Yi stole a glance and, while the other wasn’t looking, carefully pinched the corner of the fabric in her palm, slowly rubbing it.
It was the most ordinary material, yet it felt intoxicating.
Just like the owner of the clothes, it made one naturally want to draw closer, naturally want to yearn for her.
The two got out and arrived at the hospital.
Because it was the largest public hospital in Nancheng, one could still get a CT scan at this hour.
After handling the paperwork, Shen Xiaojiang accompanied Chen Yi into the radiology department.
Seeing Chen Yi change into the disposable exam gown, Shen Xiaojiang covered her mouth and let out a laugh.
Chen Yi froze for a second, feeling a bit embarrassed. “What is it?”
It was Shen Xiaojiang’s first time seeing such a high-strung person in such casual clothing; she really wasn’t used to it.
Even Chen Yi’s pajamas were usually the kind that clung to the body and accentuated her figure.
She shook her head while laughing. “No… it’s nothing. I just think you look different like this.”
“Is that a ‘different’ attitude?” Chen Yi tugged at the gown. “You are clearly making fun of me!”
After saying that, she deliberately pouted, pretending to be angry.
Oh boy, the sight of a great beauty acting spoiled was practically lethal. Shen Xiaojiang immediately surrendered.
“Alright, alright, I’ll stop laughing!” Shen Xiaojiang tried her best to restrain her smile.
This sudden serious face actually made Chen Yi laugh.
Seeing Chen Yi smile, Shen Xiaojiang felt relieved. When a person laughs genuinely, they are relaxed inside.
“Is it really… very ugly?” Chen Yi’s voice lowered, asking weakly, “Is there a mirror?”
Shen Xiaojiang’s expression froze, then she let out an uncontrollable “pfft.”
Chen Yi actually had appearance anxiety.
Even though the outside world called her a celestial being, a beauty, the “Qipao Goddess.”
“Of course it is!” Shen Xiaojiang felt playful.
Just as a flash of disappointment crossed Chen Yi’s face, Shen Xiaojiang reached out and pinched her cheek, saying dotingly, “I’m just joking, Auntie. You look good in anything.”
Chen Yi had been teased, but she wasn’t angry at all.
The spot on her face where Shen Xiaojiang had pinched felt tingly and warm. Her skin was delicate, and it soon turned a light shade of red.
The medical staff called her number. They called twice before Chen Yi heard them.
“Auntie, it’s your turn.” Shen Xiaojiang’s voice was kind, as if she were the older one between the two.
Chen Yi trembled slightly, her gaze lingering on Shen Xiaojiang’s lips.
She wanted to kiss her. So much.
As Chen Yi turned to leave, Shen Xiaojiang gently caught her hand.
When Chen Yi turned back, Shen Xiaojiang met those light amber eyes.
“Don’t be nervous. I’ll be waiting for you at the door. You’ll see me as soon as you come out.” She finished with a squinty eyed, wide mouthed smile that was meant to be reassuring.
Chen Yi was infected by it and subconsciously smiled back.
The exam ended.
Shen Xiaojiang held Chen Yi’s things and stood in a very conspicuous spot by the door.
Chen Yi stood up, quickly took off the disposable gown, and tidied her hair using the reflection on the exam machinery.
The moment the door opened, Shen Xiaojiang turned around. “All done?”
Chen Yi’s face looked slightly stunned as she nodded blankly.
The CT report would take forty minutes.
During this time, Chen Yi followed Shen Xiaojiang to the inpatient department to visit Sister Meng.
Just as they reached the ward door, Shen Xiaojiang heard Sister Meng’s voice.
She was humming a lullaby. It was a common, familiar melody.
Shen Xiaojiang stopped in her tracks. Chen Yi stopped as well.
“Auntie, let’s sit here for a while.” Shen Xiaojiang pointed to the blue row of chairs outside the ward.
Chen Yi didn’t object.
The inpatient department at night was much quieter than during the day. The slightest sound seemed particularly sharp here.
Shen Xiaojiang deliberately kept her voice low, leaning close to Chen Yi’s ear. “Sister Meng is coaxing the baby to sleep. Let’s wait a bit, okay?”
“Mm,” Chen Yi replied very obediently.
Maybe it was an illusion, or maybe not, but Shen Xiaojiang felt that at this moment, Chen Yi looked “small,” like a peer.
Locking eyes, Shen Xiaojiang saw a light in her eyes she had never seen before.
From what Shen Xiaojiang knew now, the people Chen Yi dealt with were either rich or powerful. Those people more or less carried impure motives.
If you stay near ink, you get stained black. After being around them for so long, it was hard not to be assimilated.
Yet, Chen Yi’s eyes were clean, without a hint of impurity. The black and white of her pupils were like a child’s.
A few minutes later, the lullaby in the room stopped.
Shen Xiaojiang still used a whispered voice: “Auntie, wait for me a moment, I’ll go check the situation.”
Chen Yi gave a silent nod.
Shen Xiaojiang walked lightly to the door and carefully peeked through the glass.
Sister Meng had placed the baby in the crib and was gently patting the baby’s stomach with a thin smile on her face.
Shen Xiaojiang hadn’t intended to disturb them, but Sister Meng caught sight of her.
Suddenly, the smile on Sister Meng’s face deepened, and she waved at her, her mouth moving as if saying “Come in quickly.”
Shen Xiaojiang smiled and shook her head, raising her right hand to signal Sister Meng to look at her phone.
Shen Xiaojiang: The baby is asleep, I won’t disturb you.
Sister Meng: Don’t be like that, it’s fine! Besides, I’m quite bored being here alone.
Sister Meng put down her phone, lifted the covers, and got out of bed to open the door.
Having 24 hour professional care, Sister Meng seemed to be recovering well. Her steps were quite brisk.
“Why didn’t you come in!” Sister Meng grabbed Shen Xiaojiang’s wrist.
“I’ll wake the baby if I go in,” Shen Xiaojiang answered truthfully.
Sister Meng rubbed Shen Xiaojiang’s face, looking at her with the maternal eyes of an older sister. “It’s fine, the little nugget isn’t very sensitive to sound yet. Come, come!”
“Sister Meng, I brought a… a friend…” Before Shen Xiaojiang could finish, she looked toward Chen Yi.
Sister Meng looked over as well, her eyes sparkling. “Isn’t that perfect? Come in together!”
Chen Yi clearly hesitated for a second.
She had met Sister Meng twice before to learn about Shen Xiaojiang. Sister Meng was unaware of this and was simply grateful for the help with the baby. Seeing her here, she insisted she come in and sit.
It was hard to refuse such hospitality.
Chen Yi walked to the side of the crib and began to “admire” the baby. She had never seen a child this small.
Shen Xiaojiang helped Sister Meng cover up and then walked to Chen Yi’s side.
The two of them looked and smiled without speaking, which was a bit of an odd sight.
Sister Meng waved her hand: “It’s fine, she just finished her milk and is sleeping very soundly. You can talk if you want, it’s no problem.”
Shen Xiaojiang smiled at Sister Meng and asked softly, “Can I touch her?”
Sister Meng: “Of course.”
Shen Xiaojiang extended an index finger and gently hooked the little nugget’s hand. The baby’s hand was tiny and soft, as if it had no bones.
She looked at Chen Yi beside her and smiled. “Want to try?”
Chen Yi shook her head repeatedly.
She remembered when she was a child at her grandmother’s house, she had touched her uncle’s son and had her hand slapped away forcefully. The elders thought she was bad luck and didn’t allow her hands to touch newborns.
