- After Falling in Love, the Overbearing CEO Finally Saw the Light
- Chapter 2 - The Prey’s Trap
The elevator chime sounded as it arrived.
“It is the call of love and the dedication of love that creates the resonance of love. Let us join hands with hope to make life more meaningful, and let us once again thank CEO Lu for his support.” The hostess switched perfectly between French and Mandarin. Dressed in a black swan gown, she possessed a dignified expression and charming, wavy golden hair. She was strikingly beautiful.
Thunderous applause erupted.
The place resembled a palace, with a high-ceilinged foyer and grand doors exuding elegance and luxury. The bluish-gray marble floor was as clear as water, vividly reflecting the intricate and magnificent crystal and agate pendant lights.
A waiter, whose demeanor and speech were equally sophisticated, stepped forward. “Seventh Master, it is an honor to welcome you to tonight’s charity gala.”
Xie Jun gave the waiter a meaningful look. The man understood instantly; with a smile, he took Xie Jun’s coat and withdrew so as not to disturb him.
Every corner of this place was filled with themes of charity, public welfare, and the promotion of positive energy. It was truly hard to believe that this was the heart of a private club.
After all, in the information age, business and investment must keep pace with the times. These days, even those in the underworld have begun to engage in these superficial formalities, packaging themselves as civilized people, desperate to establish themselves as outstanding youths and models of virtue.
And indeed, it was so. Everyone had shed their rough, thuggish images, undergoing a makeover to emerge in suits and leather shoes. Compared to the past days of blades and shadows, they now preferred sitting in offices drinking tea, sending emails, and making phone calls, or perhaps gathering in small groups for afternoon tea to discuss proposals.
Anything involving illicit activities or violence had long been discarded outside the scope of core values. Everyone aspired to be a law-abiding citizen. Even debt collection involved sending formal letters in advance. They were meticulous, kept to themselves, and even used legal weapons to protect their interests. Those things that could not see the light of day had long been buried, left to rot and stench in the dark crevices.
After the fiery, exotic Flamenco performance ended, elegant classical Western jazz music began to rise, its tempo swaying between fast and slow.
The musicians played with all their might. In the dim, gentle light, the tassels on the lamps trembled slightly, and the underlying atmosphere was instantly stirred. Gentlemen politely invited ladies dressed in qipaos to dance.
Gu He wore an expensive suit provided by the venue; it was his work uniform, and a single set cost as much as his monthly food budget. The world of the rich was the top of the food chain. He did not envy what did not belong to him, nor did it concern him.
This place was hundreds of times more high-end than any bar he had ever visited. There were no neon lights or earth-shattering, vulgar music. The environment was quiet, the lighting soft, and the guests exuded an air of elegance and nobility as they sipped wine and chatted.
“By the way, we usually are not allowed to swap shifts. But since you cleared it with Brother Chuan beforehand, we will let it slide. Although we have strict rules, in a place like this, it is inevitable that guests will drink too much. Offensive behavior or being taken advantage of might happen. The key is how you handle it.”
“Also, you should recognize all the drinks, right? How much you sell depends on your own skill. Your commission will be settled in cash when you clock out.”
The message was clear: do not cause trouble, and feel free to pursue business. But everything was based on the principle that one must absolutely never offend the customer.
“Alright, do you remember everything I just told you?”
The handsome young supervisor could not help but advise him a few more times. After all, students were hard to manage; he had to worry over them like a mother to ensure nothing went wrong. However, this younger brother was truly handsome. He was fresh, though a bit cold. If the supervisor had not checked his ID repeatedly, he would have thought the boy was a minor.
Gu He nodded. It was just a job serving drinks; only the venue had changed. The people here were at the tip of the pyramid, so he just needed to be more careful. He was tired of this work anyway, but one more time would not hurt.
He did not actually like these kinds of places. They were noisy, chaotic, and the smells made him nauseous, especially the smell of cigarettes. One could call him precious or fastidious, but no one refuses to work to make a living. This society has never been indulgent; earning money is not based on interest.
Survival can never be refused. Moreover, he was truly desperate for money.
However, this was a venue for the wealthy, after all. The environment was much better than low-end joints; at least there was not a mess of mixed odors, though the perfume was quite thick and stifling.
Frowning slightly, he pushed the door open. Noble copper chandeliers flickered with a blurred, ambiguous, soft light. The walls featured Roman columns painted with reliefs. The European classical style was incredibly luxurious but not vulgar. Every detail of the scenery was just right, not too flamboyant. It was evident the designer had a deep understanding of Western European art.
He did not have an artistic bone in his body; he only knew what was valuable and what was not. Clearly, he was dazed by the dazzling glitz of this debauchery.
The moment Gu He entered, he attracted many gazes. With thick eyelashes and long, narrow eyes, he had the look of a typical Asian beauty. While the boys here were all good-looking, he was absolutely stunning.
That small face was clean and fair, yet his lashes were thick and long, and his pink lips had a shimmering luster. His soft hair gave his face a blend of purity and enchantment, but those amber, translucent eyes were incomparably cold, like proud, frozen icicles that made it impossible to look away.
The gazes of those people were naked, unshielded assessments, and the sparks of desire were beginning to stir.
“Isn’t this our classmate Gu?” Zhao Pengtai was dressed in a navy suit, with frameless glasses perched on the bridge of his nose. His entire being radiated arousal, and his eyes shimmered with a sharp edge. The little prey had actually delivered himself to the door.
Gu He gave him a flat look. It was a small world indeed, and an annoying one. With a cold and distant tone, he uttered, “Mr. Zhao.”
