After Falling for the Handsome CEO - Chapter 46
Chapter 46: Not Even a Single Visit
The lights of Shen Jin’s operating room remained on.
The doctor had emerged several times to remind them that the patient’s brain was already severely injured and he had lost too much blood. Even if the Rhnull blood arrived in time, they couldn’t be certain the patient would remain “whole,” and if it were delayed any longer, the consequences would be unthinkable.
He might even be left with permanent complications.
Bai Yujin was as frantic as an ant on a hot pan. His usually sleek hair was rubbed into a mess like a bird’s nest as he paced back and forth outside the operating room, nearly losing his mind.
He called his assistant repeatedly, but there was nothing to do but wait. After all, there was a physical distance between them and the donor; even if they were desperate, the donor couldn’t simply fly.
Time ticked away, and the person inside the operating room remained poised between life and death. Just as Bai Yujin was about to snap, someone finally ran in, breathless, and gasped, “It’s here! It’s here, President Bai!”
Bai Yujin let out a long breath, and the color finally began to return to his face. He rushed to the waiting doctor and urged, “Quick! Doctor! Hurry!”
The doctors didn’t need to be told twice. Life was on the line. They quickly took the blood to test it, and once they confirmed it was compatible, they entered the operating room to transfuse it into the deathly still figure on the bed.
After briefly giving instructions to his assistant, Bai Yujin waited alone. Looking down the empty corridor, he felt a wave of bitterness. When Shen Jin was hovering between life and death, he was the only one here keeping watch.
Meanwhile, the person Shen Jin cared about most was busy watching over someone else…
Bai Yujin curled his lip in a mocking smile and rubbed his face. His expression was bleak as he whispered, “If you wake up and find out, how heartbroken will you be…”
As for Shen Lian, they kept her in the dark about her brother’s true condition, considering she was also a patient. Letting her worry wouldn’t change anything.
After an unknown amount of time, the operating room door finally opened. A doctor walked out, but the door closed behind him and the light remained on.
Bai Yujin had a sinking feeling in his chest.
He rushed forward, his expression heavy with anxiety. “How… how is he? What’s the situation!”
The doctor pulled down his mask—the same one who had treated Shen Jin when he first arrived at the hospital. His expression was somber as he let out a heavy sigh. “It’s not optimistic. Not optimistic at all! Sigh!”
Bai Yujin’s heart plummeted. He forced himself to stay steady. “What… what exactly is the situation?”
The doctor said, “I mentioned before that the patient likely suffered a head injury as a child, resulting in a loss of past memories. The high fever from a few days ago stimulated that area, which might have led to a recovery over time.”
Bai Yujin remembered him saying this and asked quickly, “Does that mean… he will recover his old memories?”
The doctor gave an immediate denial. “I’m sorry, no.”
The doctor adjusted his glasses and said helplessly, “Originally, recovery was just a matter of time. Who knew this would happen! The brain has been severely injured again. Instead of recovery, it’s going to have the opposite effect! In severe cases, it might cause the patient to…”
He didn’t finish the sentence, but Bai Yujin knew it wasn’t anything good. His head buzzed, and he felt a sense of utter chaos, staring blankly at the doctor.
“We have to wait for the details,” the doctor said gravely. “His life is saved, but please prepare yourself for the worst. The patient didn’t just injure his brain; his ear was also damaged. Whether his hearing will be affected is also a serious concern.”
Images of Yan Yu’s full-force punch and the blood leaking from Shen Jin’s ear flashed through Bai Yujin’s mind. His heart went cold.
And the man who had caused this injury was now in another ward, watching over someone else with complete devotion…
…
Compared to Shen Jin’s condition, Xie Li was far better off. He had simply worked himself into a state of agitation and recovered shortly after being taken to the emergency room.
However, to keep Yan Yu by his side and prevent him from visiting or staying with Shen Jin, he continued to feign weakness. Using his acting skills, he played the role of the “fragile beauty” to perfection, a sight that would move anyone to pity.
He also didn’t forget to display his “kindness.” Forcing a faint smile onto his pale face, he asked feebly, “What about Shen Jin… is he okay? Has he… woken up yet?”
Sitting by his bed, Yan Yu’s smile froze. His mind replayed the scene of his fist hitting Shen Jin’s head and the man collapsing into a pool of blood…
“Shen Jin… he… he…” Yan Yu took a deep breath, his hands clenched into fists until his knuckles turned white. He closed his eyes and said dejectedly, “I don’t know…”
Several hours had passed since he had carried Xie Li into the emergency room. During that time, he had remained by Xie Li’s side without taking a single step toward Shen Jin…
He only knew that the Rhnull blood had arrived and been transfused, and that Shen Jin was out of immediate danger. As for when he would wake up or if there would be complications… he knew nothing.
He told himself that with modern technology and this being the best hospital in the city, surely nothing would go wrong…
Xie Li caught his reaction and bit his lip imperceptibly before saying gently, “A-Yu, if you’re worried… go and see him…”
Despite his words, he gritted his teeth and furrowed his brow, his eyes looking so heavy they were about to close. He shook his head gently, looking as if he were about to faint, yet still squeezed out a pale smile. “I’m used to it… I’ll be fine if I just endure it. I’m okay…”
Yan Yu tucked the quilt around him and scolded immediately, “What nonsense. You need to recover! Stop talking and rest. You’re a patient too, don’t worry about so much…”
A flash of mockery crossed Xie Li’s eyes—mockery for Shen Jin. Although he had been jealous of him before, he now felt the man was truly pathetic…
“Be good and rest,” Yan Yu said, smoothing the quilt for him and comforting him. “He’ll be fine…”
When Shen Jin nearly died of a high fever in that dilapidated house, Yan Yu was by Xie Li’s side, feeding him medicine. Now, when Shen Jin was in the emergency room with his life on the line, he was again by Xie Li’s side, keeping him company…
And during the moments Shen Jin needed him most, the first time… the second time… he was never there.
He was willing to stay here and tuck Xie Li in, yet he convinced himself Shen Jin was fine, leaving him to lie in that cold emergency room to face everything alone—without even giving him a single visit.
