- Chapter 2 - Punishment
The opening ceremony for the movie Behind the Starlight was held in the ballroom of a luxury hotel.
Actors, directors, and producers gathered together. The champagne towers shimmered with an enticing luster under the lights, and the air was thick with the faint scent of perfume and alcohol.
Su Jin stood in a corner of the ballroom, clutching a glass of champagne. Her gaze remained fixed on the cool, elegant figure not far away. Ye Qinglan, the newly crowned Best Actress and the target she was supposed to “scum.”
At that moment, the system urged her deathly: “Host, remember you must hold her for a full three minutes, otherwise the mission will be considered a failure. Failure means accepting a random punishment.”
Su Jin snapped back, “You never mentioned there was a punishment before!”
The unscrupulous system ignored her anger and pressed on: “Look, Ye Qinglan is right over there. Go, go! The paparazzi are hiding in the corner just waiting for the shot!”
“No way. Tell me clearly first, what is the punishment? I’m seriously doubting your credibility right now…”
The system continued to push: “Detecting that the mission target is about to leave. Host, take action now. We’ll talk about the punishment later. Surely you don’t want to fail your very first mission?”
Seeing that Ye Qinglan really seemed to be leaving, Su Jin could only stop arguing with the system. She hardened her heart and downed several glasses of champagne.
The alcohol rushed to her head. Her cheeks flushed a deep pink, and she began to feel a slight heat.
“Yes, yes, yes! Just like that! Make it look real!” the system suggested excitedly. “Drink a few more sips, stagger a bit when you walk the effect will be perfect!”
Helpless, Su Jin gulped down another mouthful of champagne and began swaying toward Ye Qinglan.
As if possessed by an Oscar-winning actress, her footsteps became unsteady.
Just as she got close to Ye Qinglan, her foot tripped, and her whole body lunged forward.
Ye Qinglan’s reactions were lightning-fast. She turned instantly, reaching out to steady Su Jin by the shoulders while her other hand firmly caught the glass in Su Jin’s hand.
Su Jin took the opportunity to lean into her embrace, resting her forehead against Ye Qinglan’s shoulder. Her breathing was ragged, making her look genuinely intoxicated.
She cautiously peeked up at Ye Qinglan and couldn’t help but catch her breath.
She knew Ye Qinglan was beautiful, but she hadn’t realized the woman was this stunning in person. Her exquisite features seemed carved from the finest mutton-fat jade; at this close range, her skin was virtually poreless. Most striking were those dark eyes, like stars in the deep night, threatening to pull anyone in.
“Miss Su?” Ye Qinglan’s voice was calm, carrying a hint of inquiry.
Su Jin finally snapped out of it, cursing herself for being so easily swayed by a pretty face at a time like this.
She quickly adjusted her state. Acting as if she couldn’t stand straight, she took the chance to wrap her arms around Ye Qinglan’s waist, pressing her cheek against her shoulder. Her nose was filled with the woman’s faint, cool fragrance.
What perfume is this? It actually smells quite good.
“Perfectly done!” the system shouted excitedly. “Countdown starts now: 180 seconds!”
Ye Qinglan didn’t push her away. Instead, she lowered her head slightly, her gaze falling on Su Jin’s profile. “Did you drink too much?”
Su Jin’s voice was slurred. “A little dizzy…”
“Miss Su,” Ye Qinglan’s voice was low, carrying a faint, teasing smile. “If you get drunk this easily, you should drink less.”
Not only is she beautiful, but her voice is also so pleasant.
Su Jin felt her ears burn and her heart rate suddenly spike. She mumbled, “It’s the… opening ceremony today. I was happy, so I drank a bit more.”
“Don’t drink so much in the future. Your face is all red.”
Is it? No wonder she felt so hot.
Su Jin couldn’t help but reach up to touch her face, accidentally meeting Ye Qinglan’s eyes. Those pitch-black depths seemed to hold an infinite, hidden meaning, causing her to lose her train of thought for a moment.
“Miss Su, how are you? Can you stand steady?”
Ye Qinglan whispered near her ear, her warm breath lingering.
Su Jin dazed out again. Seeing her looking so “cheap,” the system quickly reminded her: “Host, 60 seconds left. Hold on, victory is in sight!”
Right! The mission!
Coming back to her senses, Su Jin fearing Ye Qinglan would push her away hurriedly said, “I… I’m still a bit dizzy, I can’t stand…”
The corner of Ye Qinglan’s lip quirked up. “Do you want me to take you back?”
Su Jin was about to say something to drag out the last few dozen seconds when Ye Qinglan suddenly pulled away, saying politely, “Miss Su, stand up first. I will help you back to rest.”
Su Jin was caught off guard. The system’s wail echoed in her mind: “Mission failed! Duration not met. Commencing random punishment: Send a restricted-level photo to Ye Qinglan anonymously!”
“What?!” Su Jin nearly screamed out loud. But given the setting, she had to force herself to endure it.
Ye Qinglan watched her expression with interest. “Miss Su, what’s wrong?”
“…N-nothing.” Thinking of the damn punishment, her face turned even redder. Wanting nothing more than to flee, she stammered, “I… I’m much better now. Sorry to trouble you.”
Ye Qinglan chuckled softly. “Since Miss Su has sobered up, I’ll be taking my leave.”
Watching Ye Qinglan walk away, Su Jin stood in the corner clutching her empty glass, teeth gritted. “You damn system! I agreed to follow the plot, not do things like this! This is a scam!”
“Where there are rewards, there are punishments. It’s very fair. It’s just a photo it’s not like you’re losing a limb.”
“Get lost!” Su Jin was fuming. “I’m not doing it. Whoever wants this trash mission can have it!”
The system’s voice suddenly turned cold: “Host, the consequences of refusing punishment are very severe. Since you refuse to cooperate, I have no choice but to take over your body forcibly to complete the punishment mission.”
Before Su Jin could react, she suddenly felt her body slip out of her control.
The system navigated her body directly back to her hotel room, closed the door, and began unbuttoning her clothes.
“What are you doing! Stop!” Su Jin screamed frantically in her mind.
It was useless. Her body was completely out of her command.
“Are you crazy! Stop it! You dog system, I’ll kill you!”
Su Jin cursed desperately in her head, but the system ignored her entirely.
“Host, don’t be nervous. I’ll make sure you look beautiful.”
With a click, the camera captured the frame.
The system’s voice rang out: “Done! Look, the effect is pretty good, isn’t it?”
“Send.”
The system sounded satisfied. “Punishment mission complete. You may resume control of your body.”
Su Jin’s body went limp as she regained control. She scrambled to grab the phone, trying to unsend the image.
It was too late.
“You… you bastard!” Su Jin cursed in a rage. “How am I supposed to face anyone after this!”
“It was a punishment mission. I had no choice,” the system explained, attempting to soothe her. “Don’t worry, your face isn’t in it. No one will know it’s you.”
“Get out!”
Su Jin didn’t want to say another word to this treacherous system.
Meanwhile, in the hotel’s presidential suite.
Ye Qinglan sat on the sofa, staring at the night view outside the window. Her eyes were filled with a restrained intensity.
“System, are you sure Su Jin isn’t my Sister?”
The system’s voice was clinical. “I have already checked. Su Jin’s soul fluctuations are completely different from the Master’s. She is indeed not her.”
Ye Qinglan remained silent for a moment, whispering, “But… I always find her familiar. That feeling… it’s just like Sister.”
“It might be a psychological effect,” the system explained.
“Psychological effect…” Ye Qinglan’s voice trailed off, a flash of confusion and longing in her eyes. “But that feeling… it felt so real, exactly like… like Sister.”
At the mention of “Sister,” her voice trembled slightly, and a hint of unbearable pain surfaced in the depths of her eyes.
The system stayed quiet for a moment before speaking slowly: “Host, the Master’s soul dissipated long ago. You know this better than anyone. Su Jin cannot be her. Perhaps… you just miss the Master too much.”
“It’s not her…”
Ye Qinglan closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm the turmoil in her heart.
“What do you plan to do next?” the system asked. “Energy is running low. You must quickly select a target to devour as nourishment to maintain your rebirth time.”
As the system spoke, a screen appeared in the void, showing a long energy bar. It displayed: 15%. A warning about low energy kept flashing.
Ye Qinglan was silent for a while before saying, “Let’s wait and see. As long as she doesn’t actively provoke me, there’s no need to drive her to a dead end.”
The system’s voice rang out again: “You’re quite generous.”
“I just don’t want to waste time on an irrelevant person. Besides…” Ye Qinglan’s expression darkened, her voice dropping lower. “Sister wouldn’t like me targeting innocent people. Otherwise… she wouldn’t have helped me back then.”
The system fell silent.
Ye Qinglan lowered her eyelids, her eyes filled with pain as she murmured, “Sister, you said you would come back…”
Just then, her phone vibrated.
Ye Qinglan picked up her phone and froze. On the screen was a photo.
The person in the photo only showed the lower half of her face. Her red lips were slightly parted, and her skin was as white as jade. A small red mole on her collarbone looked like a beckoning invitation.
Ye Qinglan’s gaze suddenly turned icy. Her fingers tightened, nearly crushing the phone screen.
The system chimed in opportunely: “It seems this ‘transmigrated’ Su Jin is very interested in you. She actually sent this kind of photo of her own accord.”
“This is… Su Jin?” Ye Qinglan’s voice turned cold, carrying a dangerous edge.
“Heh… I was planning to let her go, but I didn’t expect her to deliver herself to my door. In that case, don’t blame me for being unkind.”
