- Chapter 2 - You Can't Borrow Six Hundred Because I Actually Have It
Gu Huai still hadn’t fully recovered while in the car. The flush on his ears hadn’t faded as he covered his face with both hands, wondering what on earth he had done last night.
The driver was his friend, whom he had rushed over to pick him up. Xie Wenye looked at his pathetic state and said crossly, “It’s one thing to throw a tantrum at your dad, but you actually ran to a bar and found a random person to hook up with?”
“You should be glad you’re a Beta. Otherwise, someone at a bar would have scammed you out of everything, including your underwear.”
“Your dad froze all your bank cards, and you, master of stupidity, actually gave your last unfrozen card to that person.” At this point, Xie Wenye’s teeth were practically grinding together.
“Fifty thousand for one night? You actually dared to pay that much! If I weren’t straight,”
Hearing this, Gu Huai glanced at him slowly. “Don’t overthink it. You’re not my type.”
Xie Wenye snapped, “God dammit, do you believe me if I say I’ll throw you out of the car right now?”
Gu Huai just gave a nonchalant “Oh.”
Xie Wenye ignored him and glanced in the mirror, seeing that Gu Huai had calmed down in the backseat. However, the hickey on his neck was incredibly obvious. There was also the lingering scent of Alpha pheromones on him.
Xie Wenye felt like he was being flexed on for no reason. Thinking about how Gu Huai had completely broken ties with his family, and the disastrous scene at the Gu family banquet he’d seen via a friend’s livestream last night, he wanted to give Gu Huai a thumbs up: Powerful.
Truly powerful. Though Xie Wenye often thought of himself as a bit unstable, compared to Gu Huai, his mental state was remarkably steady.
He asked casually, “So, what do you plan to do next?”
Gu Huai lowered his eyes, then looked up again with a playful, mocking smile. “Doesn’t he hate me being in the entertainment industry? Then I’m going to dance right in front of his face.”
Xie Wenye silently offered a prayer for Gu Huai’s father.
Yesterday’s events were indeed absurd, and Gu Huai was exhausted. He leaned back and closed his eyes. Scenes from morning to night replayed in his mind. His eyes darkened, and a sneer touched his lips. “How boring.”
Xie Wenye glanced at him. “You’ve been kicked out of the house now. Where are you planning to go?”
Gu Huai’s head throbbed. Between last night’s events and the alcohol, the hangover was real. “I’m planning to crash with you. What do you think?”
Xie Wenye’s mouth twitched. “You gave your entire fortune to a random hookup, and now you want to rely on me?”
“Aren’t you going to give me some money as a benefit?”
Xie Wenye cursed but continued to drive. He kept muttering, “Giving away fifty thousand just like that. Why don’t you just stand on the street and give ten thousand to every passerby as a ‘voluntary gift’?”
Gu Huai closed his eyes again, drawing out his words. “I’ll owe you, okay? The one who owes money is the boss.”
Gu Huai stared at the apartment for a long time in silence. After a while, he couldn’t help but mock, “Forget about me for a second; did your dad sanction you too?”
Xie Wenye glared at him. “A hero doesn’t brag about past glories. It’s good enough that I’m letting you stay here. Stop talking so much.”
Gu Huai looked at him, rubbing his forehead. “Lord Xie, are you sure we can survive a week in this place?”
Xie Wenye looked at him. “Never seen conditions like this before?”
Gu Huai nodded. In all his years of causing trouble, he had never actually suffered.
Xie Wenye laughed, his tone a bit bratty. “Alright, Young Master Gu, I’ll have to trouble your highness to settle for this. If you haven’t seen it before, you’re seeing it today.”
Xie Wenye’s place wasn’t actually that bad, a standard two-bedroom, one-living room apartment, but to someone like Gu Huai, who was used to villas spanning hundreds of square meters, it was quite a shock.
Gu Huai called out to him, “Let’s discuss something.”
“Speak.”
“Lend me six hundred.”
Xie Wenye took a few steps back, his voice uncertain. “You’re borrowing six hundred from me?”
“Yeah.”
Xie Wenye clutched his chest. “You could ask to borrow six million, sixty thousand, or even six thousand, but you cannot borrow six hundred, because I actually have six hundred in my balance.”
Gu Huai: “Then how much can you lend me?”
Xie Wenye held up a hand: Five.
Gu Huai pondered what he could do with five hundred yuan. He agreed. “Five hundred is fine.”
Xie Wenye looked like he was facing a great enemy. “What five hundred? It’s fifty!”
Gu Huai fell into a true silence. In just two days, he had gone from squandering fifty thousand to not even being able to produce fifty. This was a new low.
Just as he was worrying about how to afford his next meal, a phone call came in. The female voice on the other end was frantic and irritated. “Gu Huai, why aren’t you at the company?”
Gu Huai signaled Xie Wenye to be quiet before replying, “It’s not like there was anything for me to do there. I went home and had a fight.”
The woman’s temper flared. “Get your ass back here right now. I finally landed a script that suits you.”
Fearing she’d get angrier, Gu Huai obediently agreed. Seeing his expression during the call, Xie Wenye’s face became complicated.
He pointed at the phone. “Aren’t you afraid your dad will hunt you down there?”
Gu Huai raised an eyebrow. “I caused such a scene; he’s too busy covering up the scandal. He shouldn’t be able to find me lately.”
He patted Xie Wenye’s shoulder. “Good brother, fifty is fifty. Transfer it to me on WeChat. Once I make it big, I’ll make sure you eat well.”
Xie Wenye curled his lip. “Heh.”
Despite his reluctance, as Gu Huai headed for the door, Xie Wenye yelled, “Hey! Save it! Or we won’t have anything to eat!”
He felt a pang of heartache as he looked at the 200 yuan he actually ended up transferring. Seeing the 200 yuan, Gu Huai sent back a sticker: [Good brother in my heart.jpg]
To not let Xie Wenye’s 200 yuan go to waste, he resolutely chose a shared bike. Just kidding; he once had status and money, after all; so Gu Huai walked toward a shared electric scooter instead.
When he reached the company entrance, he was stopped by the security guard. “Young man, you can’t go in here.”
Gu Huai: “?”
Gu Huai looked at the people passing by and pulled out his ID card. “Uncle, look? This is Baohua Branch, right? Why can’t I go in? I used to be able to.”
The guard looked him over. “Young man, this is a bit much. Go park that thing somewhere else first.”
Gu Huai: “I didn’t realize you discriminated against shared electric scooters.”
The guard smiled. “No discrimination, but this is a private lane. You have to go around the other side.”
It took Gu Huai forever to get inside, where he was immediately caught and scolded by Ji Chen. Gu Huai’s greatest fear was his manager, this female Alpha.
After enduring the familiar lecture for a while, Gu Huai saw an opening. “Sister Chen, you’ve worked hard. You must be thirsty after yelling at me for so long. I’ll get you some water.”
Ji Chen’s expression softened slightly. “No need. Come to my office now.”
As soon as they entered, she locked the door. Seeing this, Gu Huai’s playful expression instantly turned serious. “Is this script that mysterious?”
Ji Chen didn’t beat around the bush and handed him a file. “It’s not a script. Look at this.”
“A director who has produced several hits will be at a dinner banquet the day after tomorrow. The company specifically named you to attend.”
“They want you to please this director.”
Gu Huai flipped through the document. “Did the company pick the wrong person? Why not one of the popular starlets?”
Ji Chen looked upset. “I applied to the higher-ups to change the person, but they were very firm.”
“They said you must go. If you don’t,”
Before she could finish, Gu Huai waved the file. “If I don’t go, I can pack my bags and get out, right?”
Ji Chen nodded. She had been with Gu Huai since he signed, and over time, she had grown fond of him. Seeing the child she raised being sent into the tiger’s den, she’d rather they both just stay obscure.
Gu Huai put the file on the desk. “It’s fine, Sister Chen. I’ll go. It’s just a dinner, right? If that’s all, I’ll head back.”
Seeing how nonchalant he was, Ji Chen opened her mouth but couldn’t find the words. “Okay.”
As soon as he got back to Xie Wenye’s place, before he could even rest, he was bombarded with messages from Ji Chen: “The client has specific requirements for the clothes you wear the night after tomorrow. Didn’t you say you moved recently?”
“Send me the address. I’ll have someone deliver them to you later.”
Gu Huai casually sent his location. He walked inside and called for Xie Wenye, but there was no response. Strange. Where did that kid go without telling him?
Just as he was about to take a shower and wait for a free meal later that night, it suddenly hit him: he had fought so hard with his dad that he’d forgotten to move his belongings out first.
Looking at his WeChat balance, only 170 yuan left. Such a cold number. Even though it was the height of summer, the sight made him feel a chill in his heart. This wasn’t enough to buy even a few sets of clothes. Gu Huai had never worried about his livelihood as much as he did now.
Xie Wenye walked in to see him sitting on the floor, staring blankly at his phone.
“Why so quiet? Did you do something to wrong me?”
When he didn’t answer, Xie Wenye’s voice became uncertain. “Did you eat my cupcake behind my back?”
Gu Huai remained silent.
Xie Wenye grew more anxious. “Gu, don’t tell me you spent all of that 200 yuan already?”
Seeing Gu Huai like this, Xie Wenye was ready to fight him.
Gu Huai slumped onto the floor. “No, but Xie Wenye, how do you usually survive? How can this little bit of money be enough?”
Xie Wenye couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “Hahahaha! Now you’re panicking! What were you doing before? Look at you, then look at me. Can’t you learn from me? I’ve been panicking for a long time!”
Before he could finish crying over his poverty, Gu Huai received the clothes Ji Chen had sent over. She confirmed the time and said she would pick him up.
Gu Huai had always thought attending a dinner banquet was no big deal. He felt that way until he actually put the clothes on.
He had never been so speechless in his life. Was this really for a dinner? Why were some parts of it so transparent?
He walked out of the bathroom.
Xie Wenye had been sitting on a chair munching an apple, rocking the slightly broken seat. The moment he saw Gu Huai, the apple dropped to the floor with a “thud.”
Xie Wenye nearly fell off his chair, his face full of panic. “No way; holy crap; even if we’re poor, we don’t have to resort to this kind of work!”
