Chapter 62: Faking Sleep
The person who had discovered the anomaly possessed far more perseverance than Fang Ziyue had imagined.
After she had instructed Ling Qiu to stop soothing her spiritual power, that person could no longer obtain more information from her directly. Fearing that a direct visit might alert the “snake,” he went to seek out Liang Xiuyue instead.
Liang Xiuyue looked at the well-dressed, seemingly wealthy man before him, feeling a suffocating blockage in his chest. The man had started off by prying into the matters of that “madwoman.” Since he had investigated the Liang family’s affairs, he surely knew Liang Xiuyue detested her. This method of poking at a sore spot was truly loathsome, but due to the man’s status, Liang Xiuyue couldn’t flip out. Even Qiaorou was whispering to him, telling him to endure it.
Liang Xiuyue gritted his teeth. If it weren’t for the fact that this man could take them to the Imperial Star and help them out there, he would have kicked him out long ago!
“Mr. Liang, have you really not noticed anything unusual about her? For instance, something strange about her voice?” the middle-aged man asked again, stubbornly refusing to give up.
“What’s there to be strange about?” Liang Xiuyue frowned. “She’s usually raving mad; her voice sounds no different from a normal person’s. She just spends every day cursing people. She’s a lunatic—why are you asking so much about her?”
The middle-aged man, having failed to obtain the information he wanted, immediately lost interest. He stood up and signaled his assistant to discuss the remaining matters with Liang Xiuyue. As for himself, he left without even saying goodbye. He saw zero profit in Liang Xiuyue; there was no need to waste time on such a person, nor was there any need to give him face.
Liang Xiuyue was nearly half-dead with rage. Had it not been for Gu Qiaorou constantly calming him down in secret, he would have sent men to kill this fool long ago!
Gu Qiaorou looked at the man beside her who was fuming with anger, a trace of embarrassment and confusion surfacing in her eyes. Her “Brother Liang” was being difficult; the man had already promised to help them settle and support them on the Imperial Star. What was wrong with enduring a little? “A lack of forbearance in small matters upsets great plans.” If he couldn’t even handle something this small, how was she supposed to take him to the Imperial Star?
Gu Qiaorou didn’t realize that Liang Xiuyue’s status in her heart had wavered slightly. She simply sighed and went back to comforting him, hoping he would let the matter rest. After all, that merchant was from the Imperial Star—the very person they needed to cling to in the future.
“Master, shall we head to the Fang residence next?” The butler, who had followed the man for many years, knew his mind and had prepared the aircraft early.
The middle-aged man straightened his collar and said indifferently, “Let’s go.”
Alerting the enemy was a last resort, but that “useless snack” Liang Xiuyue knew nothing at all, forcing him to approach from Fang Ziyue’s side instead. He knew about Fang Ziyue; back on the Imperial Star, her “great achievements” had been rumored for a while. For someone like her, as long as enough money was offered, what couldn’t be done?
Immense greed and malice wafted over. The system, which had been monitoring him, relayed the message to Fang Ziyue, who was currently coaxing the little mermaid: “The target is approaching. Host, please prepare for battle.”
“Prepare for what battle?” Holding the little mermaid’s cold, smooth tail and clumsily trying to drag her wife up from the edge of the pool, the woman wiped her face with her free hand. “That’s a golden donor. Remember to open the door and let the donor in later.”
It just so happened she wasn’t averse to more money. Since the other party was willing to use money to bribe her, she didn’t mind acting out a scene for him.
“Let go! I hate you! Hate you!” The little mermaid was dragged to the edge of the pool, clutching the rim tightly, refusing to come up. Originally, she could have sent this “big liar” flying with one flick of her tail, but… but…
Hmph! It was all the human’s fault for being too fragile! She couldn’t even take one hit from her tail; otherwise, she would definitely have a fight with this loathsome human!
The little mermaid hadn’t been that angry. Her frustration over Fang Ziyue’s broken promise could have been soothed by a plate of strawberries at most. But Fang Ziyue just had to court death. As soon as she got home and saw her wife “nesting” in her clothes, she couldn’t keep her mouth shut and teased her until she was shamed into rage.
Ling Qiu had turned back into a mermaid and dived to the bottom of the pool, refusing to come out. No matter how Fang Ziyue cajoled or apologized, it was no use.
“Come out quickly, my little ancestor, or I won’t be polite anymore.”
The little mermaid was sullenly poking shells at the bottom. Her attitude, which had been softening under the coaxing, immediately grew thorns again at these words.
“I won’t! Big liar, big liar, big liar!” The little mermaid’s crisp, clear voice came through the water.
Fang Ziyue marveled at how beautiful her wife’s voice was while laughing, “Oh? You even know to say important things three times now?”
Little thing—it seemed the novels she’d had the system download into her light-computer had been useful. Before leaving, Fang Ziyue had feared Ling Qiu would be bored and provided her with many novels and films. She hadn’t expected to return to find a little jokester.
“I won’t! Your mouth is a lying ghost!”
“Wait, I only broke my promise this one time. How is my credit rating suddenly negative?”
“Heh~ Woman, are you trying to get my attention with such rhetoric?”
“…Alright, dear, stop. Let’s end this here, okay?” Fang Ziyue felt her scalp go numb with embarrassment, regretting a thousand times over that she had included “Overbearing CEO” novels in the light-computer.
“Woman, are you playing hard to get?” The little mermaid’s tail tipped up slightly; she could sense Fang Ziyue’s “agonized” emotions. Having found a way to take revenge, the little mermaid spoke even more vigorously. She was so pleased she even opened and closed her palms repeatedly, like a kitten “making biscuits.”
“I am not…” Fang Ziyue covered her eyes helplessly. “Little ancestor, stop playing. Let’s go back to the room, okay?”
“No! Hmph! Woman, if you don’t give me a satisfactory answer today, I… I’ll… I’ll bite you!” As she spoke, the little mermaid forcefully propped her hands against the air beside Fang Ziyue’s head, performing an “air-wall-slam” (kabedon). She bared her tiny sharp fangs as if to say: I’m very fierce, awoo~ super fierce!
Fang Ziyue helplessly tilted her head and rested it on the little mermaid’s arm. The mermaid’s eyes widened, and she gave her a dazed look. But fearing her head would fall, she had to flip her palm over to support her.
Fang Ziyue chuckled and reached out to touch the little mermaid’s sharp fangs, smiling, “They’re so white and tender, they haven’t even grown long, and you want to scare me? You little rascal~”
The little mermaid’s face flushed at her words, a hint of bashfulness appearing in her dark blue eyes. She went “awoo” and caught Fang Ziyue’s finger (the one touching her teeth) in her mouth, then gave it a hard… suck.
Dammit! She couldn’t bring herself to bite down!
The little mermaid huffily spat out the wet finger, turned around, hugged her tail, and curled into a miserable little fish ball. Fang Ziyue’s head was still cushioned by one of Ling Qiu’s hands. Fang Ziyue wanted to laugh at her antics, but fearing she would make her cry, she sat up and hugged her little mermaid from behind, burying her face in the crook of her neck to show weakness.
“I was delayed by some business over there. Once I finished, I really rushed back immediately. I didn’t even have time to eat on the way, I didn’t sleep, and I flew the aircraft for two days to get back.”
To avoid suspicion, she had flown the most common, low-grade aircraft of the Desolate Planet. That type of craft is extremely slow when navigating the magnetic interference of the Gobi desert; any slip-up would result in a fatal crash. Fang Ziyue had literally used her own spiritual power to shield the aircraft for a round trip through the Gobi. This was the primary reason she had exceeded her return time.
“I’m so tired, Ling Qiu-qiu~ So sleepy, so hungry, I just want to sleep…”
The woman’s voice grew lower and lower, her breathing gradually becoming steady.
The little mermaid turned her head in surprise, seeing the other’s closed eyes, and let out a soft, milky “Eek!”
Don’t sleep here!
The little mermaid reached out hesitantly, wanting to shake her awake, but then remembered she was supposed to be angry with this big liar.
“Wake her, don’t wake her, wake her, don’t wake her…” The little mermaid plucked a vegetable leaf, taking a bite for each count. By the time she took the last bite, it was “Wake her.”
But… but…
The little mermaid tilted her head to sense the relaxed emotions of the sleeping woman. She frowned and watched for a long time before finally snapping up the leaf in one bite.
She wouldn’t wake her! She was a magnanimous mermaid; she wouldn’t stay angry with this big liar!
Ling Qiu puffed out her cheeks, transformed into legs, and carried Fang Ziyue in a princess carry toward the room. Along the way, the little mermaid kept lowering her head, terrified that the person in her arms would be woken up. Fortunately, the other was sleeping very soundly.
It wasn’t until she placed her on the bed that the little mermaid let out a long, quiet sigh. The big liar really was exhausted; she hadn’t even woken up yet. The little mermaid watched her sleeping face for a moment, rubbed her eyes dazedlily, and yawned. So sleepy…
Equally drowsy, Ling Qiu naturally climbed onto the bed, pressed her head against Fang Ziyue’s arm, and nuzzled in. Before long, she was sleeping with the purring sound of a kitten.
She completely failed to see that the lips of the woman who should have been fast asleep had curled upward by at least eight degrees!
The system, which happened to be on and had watched the whole scene, remained silent, expressing in human terms: People who fake sleep just to be princess-carried by their wives are absolute scumbags!
