Chapter 49: Dream
“The Ferris wheel? Do you want to go there?” Fang Ziyue looked up at the Ferris wheel, feeling a bit hesitant. Her wife seemed to have a slight fear of heights.
Ling Qiu pursed her lips. She… she had heard that little story: if two people who love each other kiss when the Ferris wheel reaches its highest point, they will stay together for a lifetime. Although she didn’t believe in metaphysics, she still wanted to try.
“Hello? Yes, hello?” However, the “butler” holding her suddenly began simulating a phone call.
“Yes, that’s right… Okay, Miss Fang, I will relay your words exactly.”
The little butler surnamed Fang acted out the part with great seriousness. Ling Qiu wanted to laugh at her antics, but for the sake of the other’s thin skin, she struggled to hold it in.
Hanging up the non-existent communication, Fang Ziyue looked down at the person in her arms and said earnestly: “Miss Ling, your lover asked me to tell you that it’s perfectly fine not to challenge the Ferris wheel.”
Fang Ziyue didn’t need her wife to challenge her limits or do something “touching” for the sake of love. Since she had the ability, she wanted to build a comfort zone for Ling Qiu and keep her in it for the rest of her life.
Often, outsiders are the ones who egg on one partner in a relationship to challenge their limits to prove their devotion. If Ling Qiu were to challenge the Ferris wheel today, Fang Ziyue would indeed be happy, but she would feel more heartache than anything else. Because she loved Ling Qiu deeply, she couldn’t bear to see her suffer.
Furthermore, this Ferris wheel wasn’t even fully functional. Fang Ziyue knew her wife had acrophobia, so she had turned all high-altitude entertainment facilities into mere decorations. They existed only to make the amusement park look complete and could not actually be used.
“You really are…” Seeing the incomplete facilities, Ling Qiu shook her head with a light laugh. Her big fox knew her stubborn, unyielding nature, so she had “pulled the rug out” from under her.
The hydrangeas planted around the amusement park swayed, their blue-purple petals drifting in the wind and landing on Fang Ziyue’s skirt, as if kissing this gentle woman.
Ling Qiu narrowed her eyes, pinched Fang Ziyue’s cheek, and whispered: “You’re going to spoil me rotten like this.”
This woman didn’t want to walk side-by-side with her; she wanted to carry her on her shoulders, allowing her to see the farthest and most beautiful scenery while letting her remain leisurely and carefree. Stepping on the path Fang Ziyue provided, the future Ling Qiu saw was much farther than Fang Ziyue’s this was another form of security provided to her.
Ling Qiu walked ahead of Fang Ziyue at every moment, yet Fang Ziyue consistently and firmly shoved the initiative into Ling Qiu’s hands. Such pampering was something she wouldn’t have dared to dream of years ago.
Ling Qiu tilted her head against Fang Ziyue’s chest. Like a gently tamed cat, she exposed her soft belly and cast aside all her defenses.
“Then let’s go play something else. Little butler, is there any attraction you want to try?” Ling Qiu was a bit tired, so she simply handed the choice over to Fang Ziyue.
Every move of her wife could not escape Fang Ziyue’s eyes; she naturally saw Ling Qiu’s exhaustion.
“There is an attraction in this park called ‘Cloudside Dreamscape.’ Would Miss Ling like to try it?”
“Cloudside Dreamscape” was exactly what it sounded like: a very large room with a transparent glass ceiling that allowed one to see the floating clouds in the sky. The room was covered in soft, plush carpets, and the walls were adorned with exquisite small lights in the shapes of stars and moons.
By evening, it would feel like being in the middle of the night sky. Of course, though it was currently daytime, the room could automatically adjust the light. The small night lights would create a starry sky even during the day stars in daylight.
It was a wonderful idea. Ling Qiu loved the soft, smooth carpet and couldn’t stop touching it. She was truly looking forward to the attractions to come.
Under Fang Ziyue’s adjustment, a metal roof covered the glass ceiling to block out the intense sunlight. The small night lights flickered on, casting a dim, soft, and gentle glow.
Already feeling drowsy, Ling Qiu blinked slowly. Fang Ziyue placed her on a soft, comfortable plush recliner, feeling as though she were lying in the clouds. The woman, whose eyes were nearly shut, fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow, but her hand still tightly gripped Fang Ziyue’s wrist, unwilling to let her leave.
The increasingly clingy Family Head naturally received the reward and pampering she deserved. Fang Ziyue simply lay down on the recliner as well, holding the sleeping Ling Qiu in one arm, and soon fell into a deep sleep herself. She was exhausted; she hadn’t slept the night before and had carried her wife for so long today.
Sleeping soundly, Fang Ziyue dreamed of nothing. She didn’t notice the person in her arms frowning, her beautiful face turning slightly cold.
In her sleep, Ling Qiu dreamed of a blue world filled with blue data and circuits, as well as strangely-featured “people.” There were strings of symbols in their eyes, and they wore white metal uniforms that could transform into various tools.
One man, who had four symbols resembling infinity signs in his eyes, approached Ling Qiu. Ling Qiu discovered she seemed to be inside a transparent tank filled with liquid.
“The data for Subject 00 is abnormal. This abnormality has lasted for two small worlds. Why was such important data not reported?” the man said angrily. This was his masterpiece, the only successful case in this entire epoch.
The people in the room were not intimidated by him. One thin man stepped forward and said: “Director, it’s like this: because unknown viruses appeared within the ‘Entertainment Epoch’ game data, we have been dealing with the viruses overnight and didn’t have time to report.”
“Excuses.” The man didn’t believe the nonsense. He knew these people were jealous of him and his achievements.
“Fine. Then, Director, how do you want to resolve the data abnormality?”
“How to resolve it? First, exterminate the virus. Do I need to teach you such a small matter?!” The color of the symbols in the man’s eyes deepened, and the people in the room finally grew afraid.
They lowered their heads and said respectfully: “Director, we are sorry, but that virus cannot be exterminated with our current capabilities.” As they spoke, faint blue patterns flashed in their eyes. The man at the lead frowned deeply.
Ling Qiu somehow knew they were likely sharing information.
Sure enough, the man said in confusion: “Where did this virus come from? Why is there an unknown attraction between it and Subject 00?”
It had been two worlds now, and this virus always managed to accurately find Subject 00 and forcibly subvert the tasks set for her.
“Since the virus cannot be dealt with, we’ll change our method.” The man gritted his teeth, seeming pained by something. “Do you want to ban powerful Xinglan humans from entering the game?” One member disagreed with this approach. “But if we do that, we will lose a lot of energy.”
Every Xinglan person who entered the game to interact with Subject 00 had to pay a large amount of energy, which served as the resources for the Xinglan people to become stronger. But now, their Director was proposing such a losing deal.
“According to my investigation, the humans in the world where 00 is located are weak. Perhaps powerful Xinglan people are not suitable for her; those relatively weaker Xinglan people might understand her better.”
Judging by 00’s performance in the first two worlds, she didn’t like those four Xinglan people. Especially in this current world. Dammit, she’s actually preparing to marry that hateful virus?
What a joke. They had clearly investigated 00’s world and learned the phrase, “A pavilion close to the water gets the moon first.” They had placed those two Xinglan people near the subject so they would grow up together, but the subject only grew to loathe them even more. Why?
“So, why don’t we capture another piece of soul data?” A new researcher, who hadn’t been involved in this study before, asked. He naturally assumed that simply getting more subjects would work.
“If soul data were that easy to capture, do you think you’d still have your current high salary?” the man with the title of Director snorted. He had tried many ways to invade that world, but all were blocked by a mysterious force. That force even protected those soul data; only Subject 00 was an exception. When he found her, she was curled up inside a bright Xinglan stone, sleeping peacefully.
“Regardless, in the next world, that damn virus must not be allowed to discover 00’s existence. Now, find a way to shield the connection between them!”
Amidst the man’s roar, the group became busy.
Ling Qiu didn’t know how much time passed, but she was eventually injected with a blue stream of data amidst a cacophony of noise. That data stream stirred her mind like a long needle, seemingly trying to excise her memories. Ling Qiu felt her limbs constrained, unable to move an inch. Her resistance triggered a piercing alarm.
“Dammit, 00 is resisting! A single dose of the reagent can’t remove the marks on her.”
“Then inject more!”
“But this will have strong side effects. If her willpower is strong enough, she will sooner or later absorb energy from the injections and evolve.”
Clearly, that researcher didn’t want to breed a powerful monster. But under the Director’s command, he ultimately compromised.
Ling Qiu finally lost consciousness amidst a wave of sharp pain.
When she opened her eyes again, she was lying in Fang Ziyue’s arms. Her brow was knit with discomfort, but fortunately, she hadn’t woken the other woman.
Ling Qiu was unaware that a sliver of blue had quietly flashed across her deep, cold eyes, like a meteor in the night sky, trailing away into nothingness…
On the clock adorned with stars and moons, the hands moved past one mark after another. Ling Qiu’s fingertips gently stroked the skin beneath Fang Ziyue’s eyes. The tender touch caused the sleeping woman to hum comfortably.
Ling Qiu found her adorable and couldn’t help but tilt her head to trace her features with her gaze. Long, curled eyelashes fluttered occasionally like butterfly wings. Beneath the high bridge of her nose, her red lips naturally bore a trace of a smile.
But this woman rarely smiled at anyone other than her. Even with her natural “smiling lips,” she maintained a stern and steady demeanor in the outside world. Especially at the negotiation table in that tense and serious atmosphere, she could always use her smile to alleviate everyone’s pressure, only to “slaughter” them with a sharp deal once they relaxed.
A smile with a hidden blade; that was her true portrayal. But in front of Ling Qiu, every one of her expressions was real.
Fang Ziyue would not lie to her. Never.
