Chapter 47: The Date
The vast office, from east to west, had been paced over by Fang Ziyue countless times.
Her little assistant, whose brain was buzzing from watching her roam, clutched her head and wailed, “Boss, can you please take a break?! I’m getting dizzy just watching you.”
The little assistant, who valued money over her life, had entered the office at five. At seven, her boss had burst through the door and started pacing back and forth. It had been two hours already!
Fang Ziyue was startled by the assistant’s sudden outburst. She sighed and sat back in her chair, her brow furrowed deeply enough to crush a fly.
“No, really…” The assistant’s teeth ached just looking at her. She said with a distorted expression, “Do all you good-looking people waste your appearance like this?”
Frowning for too long causes wrinkles, hey!
Fang Ziyue, pulled out of her thoughts once again, couldn’t help but treat a dead horse as if it were a living doctor, saying, “Xiao Ke, let me ask you something.”
“What?” The little assistant was listless. She was sleepy from watching her boss circle the room.
Fang Ziyue cleared her throat, hesitated for a long time, and finally said, “I have a friend. She prepared a candlelight dinner for her sweetheart and planned to confess that night, but an accident happened midway.”
“So… are there any remedial measures?”
The little assistant instantly perked up! “Creating a friend out of thin air” she was very familiar with this trope~
Sweeping away her previous lethargy, she asked with overflowing curiosity, “So, how did the other person react?”
“Uh… she gave me cough, gave my friend one week. If the confession isn’t successful within this week, her sweetheart might say goodbye.”
Thinking of this, Fang Ziyue was overcome with grief. Why on earth did I have to drink that night!
Actually, Ling Qiu didn’t understand either. After she told Fang Ziyue that she “passed,” why didn’t the other woman take the opportunity to put the ring on her? Did she just not think of it?
The more Ling Qiu thought about it, the more powerless she felt. She couldn’t even bring herself to be angry at that fool anymore. Fang Ziyue’s emotional intelligence was likely sacrificed entirely for her IQ. Otherwise, she had handled the Qu Haoyu situation in an orderly fashion, yet turned the confession into a complete mess.
The Head of the Ling family, who had already offered herself up once, sighed with her head propped on her hand. She had already been “eager to marry” once; was she really afraid of a second time?
Ling Qiu thought as she sent a message: if she didn’t take the initiative, that fool would probably dawdle for a lifetime. She didn’t want to just be Fang Ziyue’s girlfriend forever; she wanted a formal status.
Wife: Date tomorrow night. You pick a place?
Fang Ziyue: “!!!”
The little assistant, still waiting for more gossip, saw her boss glance at her phone and freeze as if struck by lightning. Immediately following that, she became as frantic as an ant on a hot pan, her beautiful face flushing red with anxiety.
The expression on Fang Ziyue’s face was so intense it exceeded human limits, causing the assistant to subconsciously mimic her with a twisted mouth and squinted eyes. The cross-eyed assistant accidentally caught a glimpse of the black computer screen and was startled by the “female ghost” reflected there. She quickly straightened her mouth, feeling resentful.
People like her boss were too annoying committing “crimes of beauty” and then recklessly wasting that face just because she looked good. But it had to be said, even with a twisted mouth, her boss had a certain charm. Some people look seductive when they smirk; others look terrifying.
The assistant bared her teeth; her boss was definitely the former.
Wife: Hmm? Where are you?
Ling Qiu frowned at the “Typing…” status on the chat screen. It had been five minutes. Was Fang Ziyue writing an essay?
“Ssh—” The woman in the high position suddenly took a sharp breath.
What do I do? How do I answer?! Fang Ziyue subconsciously licked her dry lips and nervously typed a line: “Okay, Wife, leave it to me! (Cat puffing chest.jpg)”
A sticker of a tabby cat clenching its little paws and proudly puffing out its chest popped up on the screen. The wobbling cat sticker was just like that “Big Fox” even though she was terrified she’d mess up, she was still trying her best to stand tall.
Ling Qiu could almost imagine the other person cheering herself up: I can do it! I’m capable!
Leaning on her arm, Ling Qiu chuckled. With such a silly fox, how could she stay mad?
Having already figured it out and intending to be tolerant to the end, Ling Qiu opened that dressing room for the first time in a long while. She hadn’t stepped foot in here since the champagne tower incident; those ornate clothes were merely burdens to her. But this time, before opening the door, a small spark of anticipation rose in her heart.
The woman who couldn’t confess and who messed things up always gave her surprises in unexpected places. Like now.
The spacious, clean room was filled with exquisite clothing and accessories. The clothes that Ling Qiu imagined would be covered in dust had been cleaned and properly placed in glass displays. On the clean glass panes, small sticky notes were attached, clearly recording when and on what occasion Ling Qiu had worn each outfit. There were some clothes Ling Qiu didn’t even remember wearing herself.
“Investigating so thoroughly, how terrifying.”
As she said this, the smile on her lips betrayed her words. With a feeling of nostalgia and surprise, she moved her wheelchair, carefully reading every note. In the woman’s bold and sharp handwriting, she imagined the expression on her face while writing these words. Was she gentle, smiling, or filled with regret for not seeing her wear these gowns?
Ling Qiu’s hand stopped on a deep blue mermaid dress. The note attached to the corresponding display was particularly wide. This was the dress the one born for the occasion of her officially becoming the Head of the Ling family, and completely discarded after the champagne tower incident.
Now…
Ling Qiu took a long, deep breath and opened the display. Perhaps it could once again become her gown for a date.
Meanwhile, Fang Ziyue had driven all over the city until she was dizzy. Finally, she simply decided to set the date at the new manor she had recently purchased. She had bought the manor specifically for Ling Qiu to relax in. It was vast, with lush green grass, an orchard in the back, and a large sea of flowers. It seemed like a great place for a date.
Now that the location was chosen, what about food? First of all, alcohol PASS!
Fang Ziyue propped her head up, aching. She’d be an idiot if she ever drank again during a date or confession! Having made this solemn vow, Fang Ziyue spent the entire night prepping for a perfect date.
The next day, she unusually applied heavy makeup to cover her two dark circles. While driving to pick up Ling Qiu, the regretful woman was still reflecting on herself. Why did she always manage to mess up her own state at such important moments like confessions and dates? In the end, it always required her wife to be the one to tolerate her.
But to Ling Qiu, none of that was a problem. If she asked her beloved Head of House, she would get a response. Falling in love is a two-person job; there’s no reason for only one person to put in the effort after they’ve realized their mutual feelings.
The fact that Fang Ziyue was capable of proposing made Ling Qiu happy, even though the final result had been infuriating. Fang Ziyue hadn’t done it on purpose. Ling Qiu had practically begun to “fast and pray,” becoming exceptionally calm. She felt that even if Fang Ziyue messed up this date, she wouldn’t get angry.
Dressed in the deep blue mermaid gown, Ling Qiu looked like a mermaid princess. Her eyes were lined with pale blue shell patterns, and the bright silver glitter on top shimmered under the light, like playful water droplets sliding across.
Fang Ziyue was stunned. she stared blankly, even forgetting to reach out to her lover. Ling Qiu wasn’t annoyed by the daze; on the contrary, she liked seeing her sweetheart react this way. A woman beautifies herself for the one who appreciates her it made the proud and cold Head of House feel that waking up early to do her makeup was worth it.
The mesmerizing ocean princess extended her right hand, which wore a silver-blue shell bracelet, and laughed softly, “Aren’t you going to carry me up?”
Ever since that day Fang Ziyue came back midway to bring her a plate of fruit, whether intentional or not, she had given Ling Qiu an immense sense of security. After confirming that Fang Ziyue wouldn’t leave her behind, Ling Qiu fell in love with the feeling of being carried away from her wheelchair. The other person would act as her legs, embracing her with warmth and taking her wherever she wanted to go.
Fang Ziyue pinched her own fingertips hard to snap out of it. By the time she came to, she was already holding her lover and carefully placing her in the passenger seat. As for the wheelchair? Sorry, we’re not taking it.
In all her years, Fang Ziyue never thought she would one day be jealous of a broken wheelchair. Damn it, why am I not the one who has spent the most time with my wife? That broken chair stayed by her wife’s side day and night fine but it was even there when she changed her clothes!
“I’ll be…”
A string of pure “national essence” (curses) was slapped away by Ling Qiu. The other woman twisted the soft flesh at her waist and said with a fake smile, “Distracted while driving? Do you want to die?”
Fortunately, the car had only just started moving. If it weren’t for the fact that today was a date, Ling Qiu would definitely have made this stupid fox go home and kneel on a durian!
Game over! Fang Ziyue, caught being distracted, bared her teeth in a plea for mercy. “My mistake, my mistake! Wife, I was wrong! Ow, ow, ow!”
Fang Ziyue’s excellent attitude in admitting her faults made Ling Qiu huff and mercifully release her hand. She leaned her head against the seat and observed the woman driving.
The other was wearing a light blue suit. Unlike Ling Qiu’s all-blue outfit which softened her usual coldness and intimidation into warmth, the other was very cool, aggressively beautiful, and gave off a strong sense of security.
However, given Fang Ziyue’s track record of getting distracted as soon as she was praised, Ling Qiu decided for the sake of both their lives to save the compliments for later.
Unaware that she had just missed a massive win, Fang Ziyue’s mind inappropriately recalled some half-hearted, trashy gifts she found while cleaning the Ling family rooms. No, they should be called garbage. They were gifts given to Ling Qiu by Qu Haoyu back when Madam Ling was alive, out of obligation to their engagement. It was said that Qu Haoyu acted as if he were being forced, feeling that giving gifts to a cripple lowered his own value.
“Wife, do you know that storage room at the very end of the second floor?” The woman, unable to hold it in, suddenly asked.
Ling Qiu was stunned by the question. She thought for a moment and remembered that room held Madam Ling’s effects; she had never looked inside. “I’m not sure. Why?”
“Let’s agree first, you can’t be mad if I tell you.” Fang Ziyue pursed her lips; she had to get this off her chest. The thought of gifts from that idiot who looked down on her wife staying in the Ling house made her unhappy.
“Something about Qu Haoyu?” Ling Qiu could guess without trying. The car was filled with the scent of vinegar—a vintage jar of jealousy had been overturned; she’d be crazy not to realize.
Fang Ziyue nodded gloomily. “Yeah.”
“Pfft…” Ling Qiu bit her lip, suppressing the laughter that followed. But her eyes were curved and her shoulders shook from the effort; it was impossible for Fang Ziyue not to notice.
“Don’t laugh… Wife, I’m serious.” Fang Ziyue felt a bit depressed. Does my wife think I’m joking?
“Alright, alright.” Seeing her fox about to ruffle its fur, Ling Qiu quickly smoothed it down. She promised, “I’ll throw those things away as soon as I get back. Honestly, I didn’t even know they existed.” Those things had been accepted by Madam Ling on her behalf without her consent.
Getting Ling Qiu’s promise, Fang Ziyue’s mood instantly brightened.
Looking at the “Big Fox” with her tail virtually wagging, Ling Qiu couldn’t resist the itch in her heart. She leaned in and kissed the other’s cheek.
“You’ve improved, Steward Fang.”
At the very least, she didn’t talk about another man during the actual formal date, right?
“Hmm?”
The kissed Fang Ziyue was both happy and confused. The person with negative emotional intelligence was blissfully unaware. So… where had she improved? Her driving skills?
The woman, having “realized,” was extremely proud. True, the car is much steadier now~
