- Chapter 13 - Gradual Desensitization, Scorchingly Hot Breath While in Her Arms
There was only half an hour left before the scheduled evaluation and recording for the survival show.
Ming Tang rested her back against the corner wall of the practice room to take a short nap, tilting her head back to drink some water.
The past two days had flown by. Everyone was burying their heads and practicing like crazy, desperate to crawl their way out of the quicksand that was Class F.
The trainees in Class A weren’t having an easy time either. Ever since the first night when the second ranked trainee ended up completely disoriented from the chaotic schedule, a rumor had spread that she broke down and wept silently on the carpet the moment she returned to the dorm out of sheer exhaustion.
With that, the Class F trainees didn’t dare trouble the “descending deities” from Class A too much anymore, putting all their energy into breaking down the choreography on their own.
Some Class A trainees were content to enjoy the peace, treating it as just a change of scenery to practice their own routines. However, there were exceptions.
The moment Qiao Xiangshu entered the Class F room, she was as enthusiastic as if she had returned home. She shouted, “It’s finally my time to shine!” and remained as hyper as if she had been injected with chicken blood, even after patiently correcting everyone’s moves once.
There was also Qi Zhen, whom everyone assumed would be too aloof to bother with a bunch of tail-enders based on her high and mighty first impression. Surprisingly, she was also incredibly serious, though her gaze flickered with a hint of avoidance whenever she saw Ming Tang’s group.
Ming Tang drained the last drop of water from her cup. Just as she braced her palm against the ground to stand up, a sudden wave of dizziness hit her.
[Today’s Task: Pour water by Chi Ling’s feet during the theme song evaluation.]
Ming Tang: ?
System, if you want my life, you can just say it directly.
“What is the difference between this task and directly sabotaging Chi Ling’s theme song evaluation?”
Mm?
The system actually just said “mm”?
Hearing System 521’s ambiguous reply, Ming Tang was thoroughly speechless.
She had been living on edge for the past two days, fearing she would hear that electronic voice every time she opened her eyes. She had finally breathed a sigh of relief, thinking the system had gone back to sleep without a word, only for it to wrap itself around her again like a damp, persistent ghost.
Besides, spilling water was a petty interference at best, but at worst, if Chi Ling stepped on it and slipped, she could actually get injured.
“Aren’t you a romance system?”
Mm.
Ming Tang felt like she had encountered a brick wall that only gave cold shoulder treatment, she had a stomach full of grievances with nowhere to vent.
[Please complete the task on time, Host, to avoid system punishment.]
Leaning against the wall, Ming Tang stared blankly into space, suddenly feeling that this world was incredibly cruel to her.
Chi Ling had come to find her a few times over the past two days, the corners of her eyes rimmed with a damp red each time. A warmer body temperature, a rapid breathing pattern, and a voice that sounded as if it were coated in a layer of warm honey, all of these signs reminded Ming Tang that Chi Ling had fallen under the influence of an abnormal estrus cycle again.
It was a surge of passion that even suppressants couldn’t fully contain.
Just by looking at Chi Ling’s expression, Ming Tang could gauge a fraction of the discomfort she was enduring. Ming Tang knew true empathy didn’t exist in this world, yet every time she helped soothe Chi Ling, she would also be affected to varying degrees.
Whenever Chi Ling helplessly sought Ming Tang’s help, she would inadvertently lean lightly into Ming Tang’s embrace.
From her initial awkwardness, not even knowing where to put her hands. Ming Tang had gradually desensitized to the point where she would gently stroke Chi Ling’s smooth, silk like hair, comforting the physically and emotionally insecure Omega.
It was like soothing a fragile kitten.
Yet, Chi Ling never acted like the typical estrus phase Omegas in Ming Tang’s memory, who would burrow completely into the Alpha’s arms they depended on to seek a fuller sense of security.
Separated only by a thin T-shirt and the increasingly thin air between them, Ming Tang could feel the Omega, half-encircled in her arms, greedily absorbing her scent.
Chi Ling was usually cold and aloof, her breath sweet like orchids. But in Ming Tang’s arms, her breath turned scorchingly hot, panting and murmuring Ming Tang’s name in low sighs.
Every single time, Ming Tang felt her ears grow hot, her own breathing inevitably catching and synchronizing with Chi Ling’s rapid pace.
She was an Alpha, after all.
Being constantly wrapped in an Omega’s pheromones, no matter how calm and self-restrained a person was, they were bound to react.
Consequently, the Alpha specific suppressants Ming Tang had brought with her were depleted by two vials within the very first week of entering the show.
She and Chi Ling had just established a channel for growing a bond entirely different from ordinary friends, and now the system wanted her to commit such a malicious act against Chi Ling. It was truly detestable.
Ming Tang let out a heavy sigh. She neither wanted to harm Chi Ling nor did she want to be punished herself.
“Ming Tang, I’ve seen you sitting there for a while. Are you okay?”
Jian Jiahe had turned around several times only to see Ming Tang propping herself up with one hand, her brows furrowed in a melancholy expression. She was terrified that in a moment of despair, Ming Tang might just walk out and head downstairs, the kind of leaving that didn’t involve using the stairs.
Ming Tang stood up, slapping the dust off her hands and then her pants, and said, “I’m fine.”
Only then did Jian Jiahe breathe a sigh of relief, speaking very tactfully. “That’s good. Your expression looked off, so I thought you were feeling unwell somewhere.”
Ming Tang forced a reassuring smile and shook her head. “I’m really fine. I’m going to get some water; we should be heading to the recording hall in a bit.”
Jian Jiahe nodded and began running through the theme song’s song and dance routine one last time before the evaluation.
Cold water rushed into the thermos, instantly creating a dense, crisp clinking sound against the metallic inner lining. Ming Tang stared at the slowly rising water level, her heart entirely occupied by thoughts of Chi Ling.
“521, will using only cold water be too freezing? Should I mix in some hot water?”
The system remained silent.
However, Ming Tang didn’t really need a yes or no from the system. She had already turned on the hot water tap, mixing it into the large cup of cooled boiled water.
Even if she really had to play a trick on Chi Ling, she wanted to be as gentle and kind about it as possible.
After twisting the cap tight, Ming Tang heard some rustling noises coming from outside the pantry.
“How is it already time for the evaluation?! Ahhhhh!!”
Someone let out an earth shattering wail that sounded incredibly miserable echoing down the entire corridor.
Following that cry, more trainees emerged, and the entire environment began to liven up. Everyone talked about their anxiety regarding the upcoming theme song evaluation, which ironically thinned out some of the tense atmosphere.
The recording for the theme song evaluation took place in the largest practice room on the top floor, which easily accommodated a hundred trainees without feeling crowded at all.
Class A stood right in the center, with Class B and Class D on the left, and Class C and Class F on the right.
This was the first time all five classes had gathered in one place, their different colored uniforms neatly distributed like various blocks of color.
“The Moment of Destiny theme song evaluation is about to begin. Class A trainees will be evaluated in the order of their previous rankings, while other trainees may freely choose their evaluation order.”
“For each round of evaluation, five trainees will perform simultaneously. The mentors will score each trainee based on their combined singing and dancing performance.”
“The scoring results will serve as the basis for re-grading and will determine each trainee’s position in the theme song MV.”
“Trainees, please get ready.”
The host’s voice boomed from the speakers, his tone carrying a touch of passion to encourage the trainees about to face the evaluation.
After a three seconds countdown, the host’s voice rang out once more.
“First group: Chi Ling.”
The crowd couldn’t help but take a few steps back, terrified that they would end up in the same group as Chi Ling and be utterly obliterated under her brilliant light.
Yet, Ming Tang squeezed her way out from the crowd of terrified trainees. Closing her eyes and steeling her resolve, she called out:
“I want to be in the same evaluation group as Chi Ling.”
