After Breaking Up With The Wealthy Heiress - Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Tan Yunshu was accompanying Shen Yingzhi to this mall, which was a new venture by the Shen family.
Due to the surrounding hills and restricted geography, the development of Liucheng’s west side had always lagged behind other districts. To boost the local economy, the government had implemented favorable policies, attracting many enterprises to buy land and develop.
Not only had the Tan family purchased land here to build a hotel, but the Shen family had also opened this mid-to-high-end shopping mall. The total construction area spanned nearly 300,000 square meters, featuring a shopping center and Grade-A office spaces. It integrated various businesses: high-end department stores, large supermarkets, brand flagship stores, gyms, dining, and more.
Shen Yingzhi had attended university in the capital and stayed there for several months. She had only returned to Liucheng for her grandmother’s 80th birthday. For the rest of her time, she preferred not to linger at home, choosing instead to hang out with friends.
Today, she had dragged Tan Yunshu along to check out the family’s new mall. They were truly just “looking”—aside from eating and getting their nails done, they hadn’t spent money on anything else. Since Shen Yingzhi studied architectural design and was doted on by her family, some of her own design ideas had been incorporated into this building. She was here to see the work she had participated in.
Tan Yunshu had suddenly stopped in her tracks on the second floor, which was why the two of them were standing there now.
“Who would dare not listen to you?” Shen Yingzhi laughed at her words, clearly unconvinced. “I remember back in school, if anyone didn’t listen to you as the class monitor, you’d report them to the teacher immediately.”
The mall’s air conditioning was set quite low. Tan Yunshu adjusted her shawl and looked back across the way calmly. Her lips parted as she answered Shen Yingzhi. “You, Shen Yingzhi. I told you to break up with that guy before. Did you?”
“Not only did you refuse, but you also claimed he didn’t know you were rich and wasn’t after your money.” She spoke slowly, her voice rising slightly at the end. “And then he scammed you, didn’t he?”
Shen Yingzhi rubbed her forehead. “…”
She changed the subject, pointing at random. “Have you tried that beauty brand holding the promotion downstairs? It’s a domestic brand that’s been very popular these last two years. I saw people online saying their new lipstick is quite good. I think it would suit you. I’ll buy it for you; just don’t bring that incident up ever again.”
“You want to brush me off with a single lipstick?”
“Who said just one?”
Seeing her like this, Tan Yunshu smiled faintly. “The lipsticks I use are fairly fixed; I don’t really want to change for now. Fine, I won’t mention that dark history of yours again. Deal?”
“If I’d known, I would have set a ‘no dating before graduation’ standard too.” Shen Yingzhi rested her chin on the glass railing, casually watching the promotional event downstairs. “But I really can’t control myself when I face handsome guys or beautiful girls. You’re the one with superhuman self-control. Liang Pei told me that Tang Xiao confessed to you a few days ago and you rejected him. I heard he’s quite decent; his family is in real estate?”
“I don’t like him.”
Shen Yingzhi turned her head to look at her. “Then do you have someone you like now? Is there some ‘white moonlight’ hidden in your heart, like in those novels?”
Tan Yunshu’s gaze was still locked onto Fang Yu. She paused slightly upon hearing the question, then gave her answer without hesitation: “No.” Her lips curled into a smirk. “How could there be? You read too many novels.”
“It’s better if there isn’t,” Shen Yingzhi said with a squinting smile. “If there is, there’s entanglement. Entanglement is so exhausting.”
Tan Yunshu’s eyelashes flickered. “Mm.”
She agreed on the surface, but her eyes repeatedly drifted back to Fang Yu.
The staff at the brand event downstairs wore the exact same uniform as Fang Yu. It wasn’t hard to see that Fang Yu’s part-time job was as a salesperson for this promotion including that girl sitting next to Fang Yu who was acting so intimately with her.
Yes, intimately.
Because the girl had once again leaned her head on Fang Yu’s shoulder, as if they were chatting about something. A bright smile hung on her cute face, and Fang Yu also wore a shallow smile, responding from time to time.
Heh.
Tan Yunshu’s lips twitched slightly, and the atmosphere around her grew cold. She stepped forward, gesturing for Shen Yingzhi to follow. “There’s a cafe downstairs. Let’s go sit for a while, Yingzhi.”
She lifted her eyes, casting one more glance in Fang Yu’s direction, her voice carrying an undetectable chill. “I’m a bit tired.”
“Sure.”
Fang Yu didn’t avoid Mengmeng’s contact.
Mengmeng was a year younger than her, only a junior. They had worked several part-time jobs together, and Mengmeng was warm and loyal. Over the past two days, when another part-timer tried to steal Fang Yu’s sales, Mengmeng had stepped up to testify for her, stating that the customer had been brought in by Fang Yu.
Now, Mengmeng was just leaning on her for a moment out of exhaustion. Though Fang Yu felt a bit unnatural, she thought it was nothing when she considered how much Mengmeng had helped her. Such behavior between two girls was perfectly normal.
Besides, Tan Yunshu couldn’t see them.
At the thought of Tan Yunshu, Fang Yu’s lips pursed instinctively. She had certainly been missing Tan Yunshu; but what about Tan Yunshu? Was she missing her too?
Probably not.
Over the past few days, she had seen Tan Yunshu post to her Moments once. It was a high-end venue she had never visited some sort of banquet. The people in the photos all looked to be of the same social class as Tan Yunshu; handsome men and beautiful women, very pleasing to the eye.
One photo even showed Tan Yunshu hooked together with another girl. That girl was strikingly beautiful, and she had smeared a bit of cream on Tan Yunshu’s face. Even so, Tan Yunshu was smiling brilliantly at the camera.
Fang Yu didn’t know that girl’s name because she had never stepped into Tan Yunshu’s social circle. She didn’t “like” the post, either. She didn’t have the status for that.
The break time ended quickly. Fang Yu and Mengmeng went downstairs one after the other, returning to the central display booth.
The actual selling of products was handled by professional counter staff; part-timers like them had only received simple training. Their main task was to draw people in, handing out brochures to passersby. If a customer bought something from the professionals, the part-timers would get a commission.
Fang Yu’s looks fell into the “pure white flower” category, and her makeup didn’t mask that at all. Furthermore, when she worked, her bright, deer-like eyes were filled with smiles, making her very likable. Some customers found her pleasant to look at, so they would take her brochures and enter the booth to shop. Consequently, Fang Yu’s commissions were quite good.
During this time, a few men couldn’t resist asking for her contact information. She rejected them all one by one, stating it was working hours. Most people didn’t persist, but there were exceptions.
For instance, right now, a thin man with a square face took Fang Yu’s brochure and then asked for her contact. After Fang Yu politely declined, he insisted that Fang Yu act as his shopping guide and introduce the products—no other staff would do.
His gaze stayed fixed on Fang Yu’s face, his expression undisguised in its calculating nature. “Your name is Xiao Yu, right? If you introduce them well, I’ll buy whatever you want.”
The supervisor, Sister Jiao, saw this and walked over gracefully with a practiced smile. “Sir, Xiao Yu doesn’t know much yet. If you are buying for a loved one, it’s more appropriate for a professional to explain. Perhaps you’d like…”
“It’s fine,” the man waved his hand dismissively before she could finish. “I happen to like ‘unprofessional’.”
Sister Jiao looked at Fang Yu.
Fang Yu’s expression didn’t change; her eyes were still curved in a smile. She looked back at Sister Jiao, easing her supervisor’s concern. “Alright, sir.”
What else could she do in this situation?
She’d just milk him for a big sale.
It would be a waste of her effort if she didn’t get a good commission out of him. She only looked like she was easy to bully, but she was well-acquainted with handling situations like this.
From the cafe opposite the display booth, Tan Yunshu watched this scene unfold. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she saw the thin man grab Fang Yu’s hand, only for Fang Yu to calmly pull away, all while maintaining that constant smile on her face.
Tan Yunshu’s face grew as dark as a rainstorm in the middle of a sunny day. She unconsciously stirred her coffee, not even noticing as it splashed out.
A shop assistant walked over to remind her. “Hello, would you like me to wipe that up?”
Tan Yunshu put down her spoon and said apologetically, “I’m sorry for the trouble.”
“Not at all.”
Shen Yingzhi was in the corner on a phone call discussing design work and hadn’t noticed her. By the time Shen Yingzhi finished and turned around, Tan Yunshu was no longer in her seat. Through the cafe’s glass wall, she saw Tan Yunshu standing right at the beauty brand’s promotional booth.
Shen Yingzhi brushed back her hair, feeling a bit confused. “Didn’t she say she wasn’t buying anything?”
Fang Yu never expected to see Tan Yunshu at her workplace.
In these three years, they rarely entered each other’s circles. The most they had done was Tan Yunshu picking her up after work and driving her back to Xinghu Courtyard No. 35.
But now, she saw Tan Yunshu.
The event site was busy. Tan Yunshu didn’t take anyone’s brochure; she walked straight up to Fang Yu.
As a supervisor, Sister Jiao had a sharp eye. She immediately recognized Tan Yunshu’s expensive shawl and the high-quality jadeite on her wrist. Even though Tan Yunshu was dressed relatively modestly, her aura and looks were not those of an ordinary person.
Sister Jiao didn’t approach, maintaining a respectful distance. It was obvious this customer wasn’t here for the brand their beauty brand wasn’t some prestigious label. So why was she here?
Sister Jiao glanced at Fang Yu again and smiled knowingly.
As for Tan Yunshu herself, she hadn’t expected her legs to move faster than her brain. By the time she realized it, she was already standing in front of Fang Yu.
Usually, Fang Yu was slightly shorter than her, but the brand required uniform attire, so Fang Yu was wearing a few centimeters of heels. Now, she looked almost the same height.
The two made eye contact. Fang Yu’s expression held a flicker of astonishment, which she quickly hid. Before she could adopt her professional demeanor and speak, Tan Yunshu beat her to it, parting her lips slightly:
“If you aren’t buying anything, please move aside.”
She said this to the thin man. Tan Yunshu looked at him, her eyes icy and her lips curled in a slight, arrogant sneer that screamed disdain.
Other staff and customers turned their eyes toward them. The thin man raised his voice: “Who said I’m not buying?” He pointed at a lipstick, his lips trembling as he put on an air of someone spending a fortune. “This one. I’ll take it! Wrap it up!”
Fang Yu cast a glance at Tan Yunshu, then took a new lipstick and led the man to the front desk to pay. The thin man put his hands on his hips, chin tilted up, swaggering after her as if he needed a megaphone to announce his presence.
Tan Yunshu stayed where she was. She raised her wrist and pointed casually at a whole rack of lipsticks, summoning Sister Jiao, the supervisor who had helped Fang Yu earlier. “Hello. I want all of these.”
“All of them?” Sister Jiao’s eyes lit up as she confirmed.
The brand had only been established for a few years, so their range of shades wasn’t as vast as big-name brands. There were a total of 88 shades. It was rare to see someone like Tan Yunshu buy the entire set. Of the three days the event had been running, Tan Yunshu’s order was the most valuable one.
“Mm.”
Tan Yunshu nodded slightly, her gaze falling back onto Fang Yu, who had already returned to the perimeter to recruit customers. From the moment she walked in until now, Fang Yu had not communicated with her at all. This displeased her slightly, but at the thought of Fang Yu’s name tag, she still arched an eyebrow nonchalantly.
“Count the sales under Xiao Yu.”
