Chapter 47: Putting on the Ring She Carefully Selected
It was a rare Sunday. After lunch, Li Jin returned to the old manor, leaving the villa feeling exceptionally quiet.
Lu Wu sat on the terrace reading a book, but even though it was the kind of writing she usually loved, she couldn’t focus on it at all.
Today was September 21st, a date with a beautiful meaning. It was the perfect day to confess to Li Jin and officially begin their life together as a couple.
For this, she needed to prepare a place that was romantic and formal enough in advance. To prevent Li Jin from coming back too early and leaving her with no time to prepare, it was best to have a few people come over to help.
At two o’clock, Tan Xingxue’s car appeared at the intersection right on time.
The security guard stepped forward to ask, as per routine: “Hello, do you have a reservation?”
Tan Xingxue poked her head out of the car window: “I don’t have a reservation, but I was here last time. You weren’t the one on duty then.”
The security guard nodded with a smile: “Thank you for visiting Rongjiang again, but I’m sorry, entry is not permitted without a reservation.”
Tan Xingxue tried to appeal to his emotions: “I have a very important matter to attend to inside. Can I use the reservation from last time again?”
The guard remained iron-faced: “Sorry, entry permits are for single use only.”
Lu Wu quickly walked over and explained: “This is my friend. I invited her over. Could you make an exception?”
Recognizing her familiar face, the security guard’s attitude immediately softened significantly.
“So it’s a friend invited by Miss Lu. That is perfectly fine, but I’ll have to trouble her to complete the visitor registration.”
Lu Wu breathed a sigh of relief and thanked him: “Alright, thank you for the trouble.”
After registering the information, the group got back into the car. Lu Wu guided Tan Xingxue through several twists and turns before stopping in front of the villa.
Lu Wu was the first to get out and open the trunk to move things inside, bustling about like a spinning top that couldn’t stop. The items in the trunk weren’t heavy; flowers took up most of the space, and the rest were balloons and decorative gift boxes.
Tan Xingxue didn’t help; she just watched from the side, clicking her tongue in wonder.
As Ji Youyan walked past, Tan Xingxue reached out to pull her back and whispered a complaint: “Look at her. Once someone falls in love, they become a completely different person.”
Ji Youyan glanced at her and countered: “Do you think you’d be any better than her if you fell in love?”
Tan Xingxue bristled, feeling unyielding: “What do you mean by that?”
Ji Youyan said nonchalantly: “Exactly what I said.”
Tan Xingxue sneered: “Regardless of whether I’m better than her, I’m definitely better than you.”
Ji Youyan turned to tidy the things in the car: “Vague hypotheses are useless; rigorous evidence is the only way to go.”
It was originally a minor bicker, but the way she said it sparked Tan Xingxue’s competitive streak: “How do you want me to prove it?”
Ji Youyan said leisurely: “I didn’t say I wanted you to prove anything.”
Tan Xingxue persisted: “Then admit that you’re definitely not as good at dating as I am.”
Ji Youyan walked forward along the path, ignoring her. Tan Xingxue stomped her foot in anger behind her, then turned to grab some things and follow.
“So what then? It’s not like I can just go fall in love right now to prove it!”
“And as the control group, you’d have to fall in love too, right? Are we supposed to both get taken at the same time?”
“Please, it’s not like we’re being lesbians.”
Ji Youyan’s footsteps paused, and she stopped in place. Tan Xingxue kept talking to herself, completely unaware.
After several trips back and forth, almost everything had been moved inside.
As the last bouquet of fresh flowers was brought in and set down, Tan Xingxue finally had time to look at the room’s decor. The overall tone was cold and minimalist, yet here sat an “ugly-cute” plushie, and there lay an adorable rug. There were also the “exquisite” wood carvings that clearly came from Lu Wu’s hand—the family of three.
It was a bit disjointed, but it truly had a unique sense of warmth. Tan Xingxue clicked her tongue; she didn’t touch anything, just wandered around before returning to the person buried in work.
“Need me to do anything?”
Ji Youyan, buried in arranging flower foam, didn’t respond.
Lu Wu stopped her movement of tidying the wrapping paper and looked up: “You can check if any of those flowers are damaged, or you can pump up the balloons.”
Tan Xingxue glanced at a certain someone who was inexplicably in a bad mood again. “I’ll stick to the pump. Where are the balloons?”
Lu Wu thought for a moment: “I don’t think I brought them in yet.”
Ji Youyan muttered two words: “On the table.”
Tan Xingxue: “Oh.”
Lu Wu didn’t notice the friction between the two; she was too busy. A confession needed prepared gifts to show its importance—a ring wasn’t enough. She had spent time preparing several handmade items that needed to be re-packaged and boxed.
Tan Xingxue watched from the side, pumping balloons and unable to stop herself from sighing. “One of you gives a car before you’re even together, and the other starts preparing rings before the relationship is even confirmed. You two are truly one of a kind when it comes to dating.”
Lu Wu’s eyes crinkled into a smile. While cutting tape, she asked: “Jealous? Why don’t you find someone to date too?”
Tan Xingxue finished a balloon, squeezed it gently, and seeing it was full enough, tossed it aside. It “accidentally” hit Ji Youyan on the head. “I don’t have time for dating. I have the excellence evaluation next month, and the school wants me to be a head teacher. I’ve got a massive headache right now.”
“But watching a beautiful sister and a beautiful girl date is indeed sweet.”
Lu Wu arched an eyebrow, accepting the praise for both the “beautiful sister” and “beautiful girl.”
Ji Youyan spoke up suddenly: “You’re blocking me.”
Tan Xingxue: “…”
Tan Xingxue moved her leg and asked again: “Hey, speaking of which, have you driven that car President Li gave you yet? How does it feel?”
At the mention of this, sweetness surged in Lu Wu’s heart again. She pursed her lips: “Not yet.”
Tan Xingxue stood up excitedly: “Where is it? Where is it? Let me see.”
“You mean to say, all the cars in this entire garage belong to Li Jin?”
Looking at the two rows of luxury cars that looked incredibly expensive under the lights, Tan Xingxue’s mouth hung open slightly.
Lu Wu nodded: “…Mhm.” And this probably wasn’t even the entirety of Li Jin’s collection.
Tan Xingxue was moved to laughter by her own poverty: “Maybe I should just toss my Changan into a scrap metal pile.”
Lu Wu glanced at her and offered a bit of comfort: “At least it has one more tire than a tricycle.”
That’s a writer for you—even a casual remark is that sharp. Tan Xingxue rolled her eyes: “Fine, just tell me which one it is.”
Lu Wu looked toward the corner, about to speak.
Tan Xingxue’s eyes lit up: “Wait, don’t tell me. Let me guess—is it that one?”
Her finger pointed unerringly.
Lu Wu nodded: “Yes.”
Tan Xingxue walked over quickly. The sleek, natural lines of the car body, the glossy and translucent Frozen Berry Pink—it was a very stylish and elegant sports car model. After being stunned for a long while, she sighed with a complex expression.
“Lu Wu, I think President Li is truly good to you.”
Lu Wu naturally knew that no matter how Li Jin was habitually duplicitous, her actions always showed she was very good to her. But she touched her earlobe and asked the question anyway.
“Why do you say that?”
Tan Xingxue glanced at her and said softly: “Look at the other cars here, and then look at this one. Why do you think?”
Lu Wu looked around. Truly, she couldn’t blame Tan Xingxue for seeing it at a glance. Compared to the business-like black, white, and gray tones of the rest of the garage, this single, vivid Frozen Berry Pink car was excessively conspicuous.
She asked: “Because of the color?”
Tan Xingxue glared at her, exasperated. “Is it just about the color?”
“She could have easily picked any car from the garage to give you, or just bought a practical business one.”
“But this car was clearly chosen with care—the type only a young woman would like.”
Lu Wu froze, imagining the scene of Li Jin at the dealership, seriously describing Lu Wu’s height and build to the salesperson and asking for their opinion. The sweetness almost felt physical, hanging at the corners of her mouth and overflowing from her eyes. She lowered her head to hide the smile on her face.
Tan Xingxue, thinking she had said something wrong, asked: “What’s wrong?”
Lu Wu kept her head down and didn’t speak. Tan Xingxue, confused, leaned down to look, only to see her smiling secretly with a light in her eyes as if they held stars.
Tan Xingxue: “…” Fine, you women in love are something else.
By the time the confession site was decorated, it was nearly evening. Tan Xingxue and Ji Youyan were “mercilessly” sent away. As the car stopped at the intersection, Lu Wu tapped on the window to say goodbye.
“Thanks for the help today. I’ll buy you dinner in a couple of days.”
Lawyer Ji nodded coolly: “You’re welcome.”
Teacher Tan gave a fake smile: “You’d better treat me to three hot pot meals. Not one less.”
“And don’t forget, I’m waiting for the firsthand news in the group chat.”
Lu Wu winked: “Got it.”
Tan Xingxue drove away, the red taillights gradually disappearing at the crossroads. Lu Wu stood by the street for a while, then took out her phone to message Li Jin.
“Are you eating yet?”
“When are you coming back?”
“I miss you~” Cat rolling.jpg
Perhaps because she happened to be looking at her phone, Li Jin’s reply came quickly.
“Not yet.”
“Around eight o’clock.”
Every question had a response. Compared to before, she had improved quite a lot.
Lu Wu smiled: “I’ll wait for you at home.”
Li Jin replied: “Mhm.”
Afraid of saying too much and blowing her cover, Lu Wu sent an emoji to end the chat. Li Jin didn’t message back. It was the most concise of chats, yet she stared at it for a long time before turning to walk back inside.
The sky was cloudless, clear and refreshing. Lu Wu’s steps became increasingly light; she was in a joyful mood and hummed a song softly. There were still two hours until eight; all she had to do was wait patiently.
Wait for Li Jin to come home.
And after that—
Amidst the romantic candlelight and fresh flowers, Li Jin would smile and accept her confession, and put on the ring she had carefully selected. She would open the meticulously prepared gifts one by one, and Lu Wu would tell her the story behind each one. They would naturally kiss and entangle with passionate abandon. And finally, they would lie in bed together and fall asleep in each other’s arms.
Lu Wu looked forward to it, and she was certain. Today would surely be a beautiful, perfect, and memorable day.
