After Breaking Up with the Stoic CEO - Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Will She Agree?
Li Jin said… she was in a relationship with her.
Lu Wu couldn’t believe it, but something was like a new sprout, slowly piercing through the soil and catching the first glimpse of daylight.
Her heart pounded, initially just a faint, imperceptible echo in her mind, then expanding, amplifying, until it finally filled her entire chest.
Qin Xu noticed nothing. She was immersed in her own world, recollecting the legendary stories she had heard since childhood and sighing to herself.
“That’s President Li, after all. My goddess, who for so many years loved only her career and cared nothing for romance, has finally moved her mortal heart… Just who has such good fortune?”
“Qin Xu, say what you just said again.”
Qin Xu was startled, thinking she had said something wrong.
“Say it again? Me? Why?”
“It’s nothing,” Lu Wu bit her lip, trying to remain calm, but an uncontrollable joy made her voice tremble. “I just want to confirm something.”
Qin Xu let out an “oh” and asked, “Which sentence?”
Lu Wu took a deep breath: “The one about the bitten lip.”
Qin Xu was a bit confused, but since the other person’s tone was so urgent, she tentatively repeated it: “President Li’s partner is a tough character; they bit her lip until it bled. A young couple… into a bit of ‘kink’?”
Li Jin had always been flawless. A bitten lip was an extremely rare moment of “imperfection.”
And it had only happened that one time recently.
Lu Wu was certain now: Li Jin’s romantic partner was indeed herself.
Qin Xu was still nervous, but the person on the other end of the line had gone silent.
“Did you confirm it?”
“Hello?”
“Little Lu Wu?”
“Hello? Still there?”
“Ms. Lu? Miss Lu?”
Qin Xu’s voice continued to chatter on, but pink bubbles were rising in the air, making even these ramblings impossible to dislike.
The corners of Lu Wu’s mouth curled up, and she finally answered: “Confirmed.”
Three simple words, but the smile in her voice gave off an unmistakable sense of happiness.
But what did Li Jin’s romantic interests have to do with the great writer Lu Wu?
Qin Xu suspected this person was becoming mentally unstable from burying herself in creative work at home every day.
Years ago, didn’t that great painter Van Gogh just keep painting at home until he eventually “ended” himself?
She asked worryingly: “I haven’t seen you post on your Moments or go out with everyone lately. Are you always at home writing?”
Lu Wu’s tone was light: “Don’t worry, just occasionally. You know I don’t like staying cooped up at home.”
Qin Xu couldn’t let it go and added: “Inspiration can’t be rushed. Better to go out and breathe some fresh air than to stay in a room with the curtains drawn getting moldy.”
Lu Wu understood she was worried and explained further: “I go to the nearby park every day. The view from the small pavilion is wide and the scenery is nice.”
Qin Xu breathed a sigh of relief: “That’s good then.”
A few seconds later, she suddenly found it strange.
She had been to Lu Wu’s new home more than once. The location was good and transportation was convenient, but it was surrounded by business districts and office buildings—the only downside was that there were no large parks nearby.
Qin Xu tilted her eyebrows: “Wait a minute. There are no parks near your house. Where did this ‘small pavilion’ come from?”
As she spoke, Lu Wu happened to reach the entrance of Rongjiang. The people at the gate saw her and smiled as they greeted her.
“Miss Lu, good evening. Welcome back to Rongjiang.”
Lu Wu returned the smile: “Good evening.”
Qin Xu, on the other end of the phone, caught the keyword: “Rongjiang? What are you doing there?”
Lu Wu answered naturally: “Staying at a friend’s house.”
But the land prices in Rongjiang were not low. The words “staying at a friend’s” easily carried a different connotation.
Qin Xu keenly realized that her best friend might have had an ambiguous encounter without her knowing, and the target was likely a beautiful and wealthy woman.
At that moment, her suitcase happened to catch on a raised floorboard and hit her toe. She hissed in pain, and when she spoke again, she was practically gnashing her teeth.
“What kind of friend? Don’t tell me it’s the kind where you sleep in the same bed.”
Lu Wu slowed her pace as she approached the villa, looking down at the time.
18:40.
It was getting late. If she kept being evasive, this conversation would never end.
“The person who bit Li Jin’s lip was me.”
The amount of information in that one sentence was massive.
Qin Xu’s brain was uncharacteristically slow for a moment. She repeated it word for word: “The person… who bit Li Jin’s lip… was you?”
So the beautiful, wealthy woman was Li Jin, and the pig that made off with the prize cabbage was Lu Wu?
Silence for a few seconds. Then, like a balloon being popped, a sharp, explosive scream erupted from the other end.
“WHAT?!”
After dealing with Qin Xu, Lu Wu stood at the end of the path but didn’t open the door to go inside.
She needed some time to digest this news.
Her finger slid across the screen, opening the chat window with Li Jin.
She scrolled through the few chat records and clicked on the profile picture to enter her Moments.
Li Jin’s social media was like her work style: concise and clear.
There wasn’t a single piece of personal content. Aside from the latest news announcements for the Li Group, there were only current events and policy news.
The most recent post was from ten days ago, a shared post seeking public opinion on the amendment of the Minors Protection Act pinned to the top.
Just like these long, seemingly cluttered but personally unrevealing reposts, Lu Wu’s understanding of Li Jin was limited, and her actions had been superficial.
Li Jin never talked about what she liked or wanted, nor did she mention the young girl’s background.
Lu Wu hadn’t asked, giving her the appropriate amount of consideration and care, treating Rui Rui merely as a cute little fan.
Li Jin was busy; they only had a few exchanges and almost never met.
Lu Wu had been content with the sweetness at hand, allowing the relationship to stay at a standstill.
But Lu Wu remembered that she had initially approached the other woman with a purpose and ambition.
She wanted all of Li Jin, not a compromise.
Her finger remained still for a long time. The screen dimmed, reflecting a face that hadn’t quite lost its youthful greenness.
It easily reminded Lu Wu of her own messy teenage years.
Actually, Xu Xiaoqiu had always been dedicated to her growth. However, as a single mother, just making a living on her own took all her strength; no matter how much she cared, there were always omissions and oversights.
Xu Xiaoqiu didn’t know the nasty things people said because her family was “incomplete.” She didn’t know people stole her money so she couldn’t afford books and pens. She didn’t know people intentionally hid her homework so she became a “bad student” in the eyes of the teachers.
Lu Wu stubbornly didn’t tell Xu Xiaoqiu, enduring the hardships and embarrassment alone.
Since then, she had clearly realized that everything she liked, disliked, or needed to achieve—she had to fight for it herself.
And now, Li Jin had already taken a step.
She just needed to proactively catch her.
Meow—
A soft cry rang out, and Lu Wu snapped out of her thoughts.
A small black cat poked its head out of the grass and then stepped gracefully across the lawn. Its fur was glossy and smooth, and its eyes were clear and bright, like two precious jewels.
It looked like Li Jin.
Lu Wu crouched down and looked into the cat’s eyes.
“Where did you come from? You’re so beautiful, you must have an owner, right?”
The kitten lowered its head and rubbed against Lu Wu’s leg with the unique warmth of a small animal—soft and a bit ticklish.
Lu Wu scratched its chin: “Wait, if you weren’t a stray, you probably wouldn’t have come to Li Jin’s house.”
As person and cat played, Lu Wu spoke to herself again.
“What do you think if I confess to her?”
“Would she prefer to take things slow?”
“Chinese Valentine’s Day is coming up soon. If I invite her to a movie, will she agree?”
The cat couldn’t speak; it just looked up expectantly and let out one cute, honest meow after another.
It was probably hungry.
Lu Wu sighed, laughing at herself for asking a cat for advice.
She gently patted its round head and pointed to a nearby bench: “Wait for me here. I’ll go boil some chicken breast for you, okay?”
“Tomorrow after school, I’ll have Uncle Wang pick up Rui Rui and bring her back to the old manor. That way she won’t be hovering around you during the weekend and affecting your rest.”
Li Chunhua’s care was always like this—not asking if it was needed, but making decisions directly if she thought it was necessary.
Li Jin felt somewhat helpless: “Mother… I promised Rui Rui I’d take her out to play this weekend.”
Li Chunhua said earnestly: “Xiao Jin, Rui Rui isn’t small anymore. You can’t always let her have her way.”
Li Jin remained silent for a moment and didn’t speak further.
Li Chunhua sighed and urged again: “Xiao Jin, I trust you with everything, but you have no limit when it comes to work. You have to change that, you know?”
“I know, Mother.”
“You can handle it when you’re young, but when you’re a bit older, it’s easy to break your health. How can you manage without someone to take care of you?”
Li Chunhua sighed, bringing up old matters again.
“Your sister is flying all over the world right now, with no one to care for her. I know, because of that incident back then, I was angry with her, and she resents me too.”
Li Jin comforted her in a gentle tone: “Actually, Sister just can’t bring herself to lose face. She doesn’t know how to take the initiative to make up with you.”
Li Chunhua knew these were just comforting words and simply smiled.
“I gave birth to her; I know her temper. You don’t need to speak for her. Fortunately, the elder one is immature, but at least the younger one is understanding.”
Li Jin shifted the topic at the right time: “I saw Huo Jing a few days ago. She asked me to send her regards and said she would visit you at the manor when she has time.”
Hearing Huo Jing’s name, Li Chunhua’s mood clearly improved. She chuckled: “That quirky little girl? I haven’t seen her in a long time.”
“But I was in contact with your Aunt Huo not long ago. She said she’s scouted a few young men for you with clean backgrounds. When you have time, come back and meet them. I’ll help you evaluate.”
Li Jin’s gaze lowered slightly. She didn’t say no.
“The company’s personnel structure is changing lately, and I can’t find the time. We’ll talk about it next time.”
