- Chapter 28 - Softhearted but Not Submissive. Wind Blows the Veil, a Shielding Scheme
Qiu Ye took a deep breath, feeling that Lu Mingchuan’s words held a meaning far deeper than their surface.
A mysterious impulse surged within him. He raised his hand and gently pinched the edge of the bridal veil.
The silver bells on the lace swayed and chimed with his movements, mingling with the slight rustle of the tassels to create a melody that confused the heart.
Lu Mingchuan had packaged himself as a harmless prey, patiently waiting for Qiu Ye to fall into this trap set in the name of love.
Just as Qiu Ye was about to lift the veil completely, a powerful gust of wind howled through without warning.
“Whoosh—”
The wind caught the magnificent veil. The wide expanse of gauze seemed to take on a life of its own, flipping upward violently before quickly descending like a massive, light cloud.
The veil shrouded Lu Mingchuan and Qiu Ye tightly together, the silver bells emitting a dense, fine tinkling within the semi-enclosed, narrow space.
Inside the silver-white veil, the light instantly became hazy and ambiguous.
Lu Mingchuan’s nose brushed against Qiu Ye’s, like a puppy showing friendliness.
Qiu Ye could clearly see Lu Mingchuan’s eyelashes close at hand and feel his warm breath slowly brushing against his cheek.
The two were trapped in this tiny world consisting only of each other, so close that they could hear the drum-like thumping of each other’s hearts.
Outside the veil, there was a moment of silence, followed by an explosion of thunderous cheers and heckling.
An Yilun was so excited he nearly jumped, just short of blowing a loud whistle. Even the usually reserved Zhou You and Liang Yongning couldn’t help but break into amused smiles.
“This wind came at such a perfect time.”
Standing behind the camera, Director Lai was nearly ready to shout in admiration, the lens locked onto that magnificent veil bulging in the wind, covering the two men.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Qiu Ye was the first to pull the veil down. Turning his head, he saw He Yuchen staring at him with an extremely grim expression.
Such a “famous scene” was, of course, edited into the trailer for the new episode.
【Even the wind is helping them! Ahhh! Mom! Dad! I’ve been born (from the sweetness)!!!】
【The Veil: I approve of this marriage! Lock them together! This is literally an idol drama coming to life!】
【Lu Mingchuan, didn’t you use to walk the ‘aloof and cold’ path?! How come you’re like a peacock spreading its feathers the moment you meet your Bunny Wife???】
【The person above found the truth! He is frantically ‘flexing’ in front of Qiu Ye! He’s super in love, okay?】
The next day, the guests woke up early to learn how to drive forklifts to help local low-income households plant potatoes.
During the forklift teaching segment, the instructor gave a brief explanation and demonstration before letting the guests have their first try.
“It’s normal to be unskilled at first.”
The operating logic of a forklift is different from a car; it has an extra control lever, making it a bit more complex.
Qiu Ye sat in the driver’s seat. He tried pushing and pulling the lever while coordinating the clutch and accelerator.
The massive forklift seemed to become exceptionally docile under his hands. After two or three attempts, he could steadily lift and move the fork arms. His movements were so fluid he didn’t look like a novice at all.
“Wow! Qiu Ye, you’re too amazing!” An Yilun leaned on the fence in amazement. “You learned it just like that?”
Qiu Ye released the control lever and pursed his lips. “I just had a good feel for it moments ago.”
Beside him, Lu Mingchuan looked at him, his eyes filled with undisguised pride.
Soon, they reached the potato planting stage. As the most gifted guest at driving the forklift, Qiu Ye followed the instructor to try hilling the soil.
Before long, the moist, fertile land was plowed into uniform rows.
Liu Mian held a seed potato covered in mud with a “pinched finger” gesture, his face full of reluctance as he placed it into the neat furrows.
He symbolically placed a few, and feeling that the camera had captured enough of his “laboring” figure, he began to complain in a delicate voice: “I’m so tired.”
“The sun is so strong, my skin is going to have an allergic reaction.” Liu Mian leaned toward He Yuchen, hoping he would say something on his behalf.
To the side, He Yuchen had a dark face, his gaze frequently darting toward Lu Mingchuan and Qiu Ye, who were cooperating tacitly in the distance.
Liu Mian curled his lip. Seeing that the other party wasn’t paying him any mind, he took out a hydrating spray and began to mist himself.
Nearby, Zhou You and Liang Yongning rolled up their sleeves and worked with great fervor, unbothered by the beads of sweat on their foreheads.
Qiu Ye carefully buried the muddy potato chunks into the ridges, his fingertips feeling the moist, cool touch of the soil.
Lu Mingchuan took off his gloves, looked at the newly turned earth, and said softly, “Planting things is truly a miraculous thing.”
“You just bury it, water it, and wait,” a soft light flickered in his eyes. “When the time comes, there will always be a result.”
The off-road fleet traveled along the bumpy dirt road toward the depths of the grasslands.
The peak of the Gongsa Snow Mountain shimmered with pure white snow under the sunlight, and spring water flowed slowly through the vast prairie.
At the edge of the horizon, a low felt tent appeared; this was the home of the person they were visiting today.
This elderly, solitary woman was known by the locals as Grandma Yangjin.
They got out of the cars carrying practical supplies like rice, flour, and oil.
Grandma Yangjin had been waiting outside the door early. She wore a heavy black robe, her face covered in deep wrinkles, yet her eyes remained clear.
“Wel… welcome, you all.”
The low interior of the house was somewhat dim. A copper Buddha statue was enshrined on the altar, with several small butter lamps flickering with weak flames.
Qiu Ye pressed his palms together toward the Buddha statue and gave a slight bow.
After bowing, he noticed that the wick of one of the lamps was nearly exhausted, the flame flickering unsteadily. He silently stepped forward to add oil.
Qiu Ye carefully brightened the wick, allowing the flame to burn brightly once more.
Watching the young man’s focused and gentle movements, Grandma Yangjin’s wrinkled face broke into a kind smile.
She picked up a polished wooden prayer wheel, handed it to Qiu Ye, and said, “Good child, the gods will bless you.”
Qiu Ye spun the prayer wheel round and round. The body of the cylinder made a rhythmic, dull, and distant spinning sound.
Liang Yongning explained quietly to them from the side: “Yangjin is actually a name she took later.”
“Many years ago, she came here from a very far place. She fell in love with a local herder and never left.”
The wind blew through Yangjin’s gray hair. She poured the brewed tea into a carefully wiped tea bowl and then sat down with them.
“What does ‘Yangjin’ mean in Mandarin?” Lu Mingchuan held the hot tea and took a sip.
“It means ‘Goddess of Music’ (Saraswati).” Yangjin hadn’t spoken Mandarin in a long time; she looked at the camera nervously, her speech a bit stumbling.
Qiu Ye suddenly thought of his own mother.
Shen Miaoyin also once had her days of being sought after and admired, yet in the end, she placed her heart’s desire in the hands of the gods.
People treated Shen Miaoyin like a lotus in full bloom—something to be plucked and played with, but never something they wished to bring home to settle down with.
Though this lotus was beautiful, the seeds it bore were very bitter.
“He thought my voice sounded very good, so he gave me this name.” Yangjin’s voice possessed a softness that transcended age, carrying a certain compassionate, Buddhist quality.
Liu Mian looked around and didn’t see Yangjin’s lover, so he asked, “Is he not here?”
“He was taken away by a blizzard. So, I stayed to guard our home, and to guard this Gongsa Snow Mountain.”
Qiu Ye snapped back to reality and looked up at Yangjin.
He truly found it hard to imagine what kind of feelings one must have to worship the very divine mountain that took away their beloved.
During a break in the filming.
“You were spacing out just now. What were you thinking about?” Lu Mingchuan followed Qiu Ye out.
Qiu Ye turned his head slightly and said, “I suddenly thought of my mother.”
Shen Miaoyin was beautiful and weak. When she was young, she delusionally tried to use love as leverage to become the legitimate Mrs. Qiu; in her old age, she hoped her son would soar to the sky and lead her out of that heartless cage.
Qiu Ye didn’t inherit her naivety, but he did end up following her in worshipping many gods.
“If it were you, would you wait for someone who isn’t coming back?”
Lu Mingchuan took the prayer wheel from Qiu Ye’s hand, turned his head, and answered: “How would I know without waiting?”
The prayer wheel continued to hum, sound after sound, unending.
The wind howled past, sweeping over the rolling hills. An archery range had been set up at the edge of the vast grassland.
Several guests were learning how to draw a bow and shoot arrows under the guidance of professional athletes.
Benefiting from his previous training in mounted archery, Lu Mingchuan’s movements of drawing, aiming, and releasing were fluid. The arrow thudded firmly into the bullseye.
Seeing this, An Yilun was eager to try, but his arrow fell limp on the ground not far from the target, making everyone laugh.
“Brother Yilun, it should be like this.” Xin Ye walked up behind An Yilun to help him adjust his grip on the bow.
Xin Ye placed one hand lightly on An Yilun’s waist while the other corrected his finger placement on the string, explaining the essentials in a low voice near his ear.
“Try it again.”
“Young Master He, what do you think about what I told you last time?”
Liu Mian lowered his head to tidy his sleeves, keeping his voice down. “In my opinion, Secretary Qiu is the type who is ‘softhearted but not submissive.’ (Eat soft, not hard).”
“The more forceful you are, the more he resists.”
“He won’t even give me a proper look now!”
He Yuchen irritably plucked at the bowstring. “Will that method you mentioned really work?”
Liu Mian leaned even closer, his voice dropping further. “At a time like this, the ‘bitter meat’ (self-injury) tactic is most effective.”
“Wait until we’re shooting arrows. I’ll pretend to slip up, and the arrow will head toward him. You rush over to block it for him.”
“These arrows won’t kill anyone; at most, they’ll graze the skin. Of course, seeing a bit of blood makes the effect better.”
Liu Mian paused, observing He Yuchen’s expression before continuing, “When he sees you got hurt for him, no matter how calm he seems on the surface, could his heart not be moved even a little?”
“When the time comes, you lower your posture and say some nice things. I don’t believe Qiu Ye’s attitude won’t soften.”
Soon, it was Liu Mian’s turn.
Liu Mian picked up the bow, his fingers trembling slightly as he deliberately said, “Oh my, this bowstring is so heavy…”
In the next second, he drew the bow. His aim drifted slightly toward the area where Qiu Ye was standing, and he simultaneously signaled He Yuchen with his eyes.
Most people’s attention was on the targets. Liu Mian’s fingers seemingly lost their strength and released. He cried out in alarm: “Ah!”
The arrow left the string, tracing a slightly skewed arc, heading straight for the empty space behind Qiu Ye’s side!
“Watch out!”
He Yuchen had been poised and ready. He roared and charged out as if he had rehearsed it, lunging toward Qiu Ye.
Qiu Ye was suddenly pushed aside, not reacting in time.
“Swoosh!”
The white arrow tip grazed the outer side of He Yuchen’s upper arm, slicing through the thin fabric and leaving a wound over an inch long.
Blood immediately welled out, quickly staining his expensive, custom-made shirt red.
He Yuchen let out a muffled groan. The pained expression on his face didn’t seem fake as his body swayed.
“Qiu Ye, you… you aren’t hurt, are you?”
He clutched his bleeding arm, looking at Qiu Ye with deep, soulful eyes.
Qiu Ye was startled by this sudden turn of events. He was clearly stunned, having never expected to be tackled to the ground by He Yuchen.
He quickly noticed He Yuchen’s arm, which was bleeding incessantly, and his brow furrowed deeply.
“He Yuchen, are you all right?”
