After Breaking Off the Engagement, The Young Lady Deeply Regretted It - Chapter 33
The maid panicked: “We were going to tidy up Miss Jing’s room, but the door won’t open—there’s someone inside.”
“Are you new here?” Jing xiao felt a sense of foreboding. Worried about causing trouble, she said coldly, “Just like before, no one is allowed in my room without permission.”
Before the maid could apologize, she hurriedly added, “Miss Jingxiao, you should go upstairs and check first, in case any valuables are missing.”
Jing xiao was irritated and glared at the flustered maid. “There are no valuables in my room.”
Even if someone found out, she wanted to buy Fang Qingyu more time to hide.
Jing lan, as if confirming her suspicions and hoping to trap Jingxiao, suggested, “Let’s go check first.”
The security team the maid called arrived just then. A line of well-trained professional bodyguards, neatly dressed and serious, stood motionless, awaiting instructions. At this point, refusing would have made Jingxiao appear guilty.
Clenching her jaw, Jing xiao regretted having selfishly allowed Fang Qingyu to stay. She asked, “Did anyone stay at the door to keep watch?”
The maid nodded. “Two people are stationed at the second-floor stairwell, just in case of accidents.”
Old Mr. Jing, with limited mobility, didn’t go upstairs, letting Mr. Jing (Jing xiao’s father) report the situation in real-time. He gave Jing xiao a grim look, roughly guessing, “My daughter wouldn’t do anything foolish, right?”
Jing xiao maintained a calm expression. “Father, I don’t understand what you mean.”
She remembered that the corner of the stairway had a security camera covering the entire first floor. Pressing her thumb against her pulse, she silently hoped Fang Qingyu wouldn’t be discovered.
One of the bodyguards pushed open Jing xiao’s door and searched thoroughly, even checking the balcony, wardrobe, and under the bed. In the end, they found nothing unusual.
The remaining bodyguards were sent to search other hiding spots on the second floor. Jing xiao and her father inspected the room and confirmed that no valuables were missing. Jing xiao carefully observed the changes in the room and couldn’t help but laugh.
Fang Qingyu had even taken away a trash bag full of empty wine bottles.
She really was meticulous.
The professional bodyguards’ search proved fruitless, and with nothing missing, everyone let their guard down. Jing xiao, wanting to be thorough, asked the maid sharply, “Did you actually see anyone in my room?”
The maid, realizing her commotion had no results, shook her head tremblingly. “No… I didn’t.”
Jing xiao warned the two maids not to act on rumors in the future and, citing feeling unwell, didn’t go downstairs again.
After everyone left, Jingxiao dragged her heavy steps to open the curtains. Fang Qingyu was not hiding in the elm tree outside. Jingxiao then called her number.
The melodious ringtone sounded in the room. Fang Qingyu’s phone was under her pillow, so Jing xiao ended the call, feeling helpless.
Fang Qingyu didn’t know her current situation and dared not return recklessly, so Jing xiao had to search carefully, step by step.
Jing xiao left the room and walked alone down the long, dark corridor. She had already checked every place the bodyguards could access. Fang Qingyu had been hiding too cautiously.
Jing xiao dared not make too much noise, pacing back and forth. She even suspected that Fang Qingyu had climbed along the air-conditioning unit.
At the end of the corridor was a storage room. Fang Qingyu carefully peeked through a crack to observe the outside situation. Seeing the outline of Jing xiao’s calf, she lightly tapped on the door.
Hearing the sound, Jing xiao tapped back to signal acknowledgment. “Fang Qingyu?”
Fang Qingyu, breathing heavily, replied, “It’s me.”
The storage room’s window couldn’t be opened from the inside. Coupled with its small size and a lost key, it hadn’t been used in a long time. Fang Qingyu finally dared to show herself. She breathed in the fresh air deeply, then clung to the wall and grabbed the upstairs waterproof platform for balance, softly calling Jing xiao.
Jing xiao looked around several times, finally locating the source of the voice. She quickened her pace and reached the window, pulling Fang Qingyu inside. “You hid really well.”
Fang Qingyu’s clothes were soaked with sweat, sticking tightly to her back. Her hair, half wet and half dry, hung behind her. She forced a smile. “I was afraid being discovered would put you in danger.”
“You won’t be putting me in danger.” Jing xiao closed the window, urging, “Go back to the room first. We’ll talk there.”
Jing xiao fetched a comfortable summer nightgown for Fang Qingyu. The autumn night was slightly chilly, so she set the air conditioner to 20 degrees. Then she went downstairs to ask the cook to prepare a light meal.
Fang Qingyu dried her damp hair. The air from the heater was warm and soft. She sat in the center of the bed, alertly watching the door.
Jing xiao, anxious to avoid further trouble, lowered her voice. “Fang Qingyu, I only asked the cook to make noodles.”
The storage room was unbearably hot. Fang Qingyu drank two bottles of water before she felt better. “Got it.”
There were a few small new scratches on Fang Qingyu’s calves. Jing xiao brought over the first aid kit. “I’ll sleep on the sofa tonight. You sleep on the bed. You should disinfect your wounds first.”
Fang Qingyu’s eyes fell on her legs. Dried blood had clotted on the scratches. She shook her head. “I don’t want to disinfect them.”
Jing xiao spoke firmly. “No, you must disinfect them.”
Ignoring her, Fang Qingyu extended her leg aside and casually opened her phone to watch videos.
Jing xiao frowned. After a brief standoff, she finally gave in and used a cotton swab dipped in iodine to gently apply it to Fang Qingyu’s wounds.
Fang Qingyu gasped, instinctively trying to pull away.
Jing xiao held her ankle. “Don’t move.”
Fang Qingyu bit her lower lip, tears forming at the corners of her eyes. “It hurts.”
Jing xiao blew gently on the wound. “Endure it.”
