After Being Used As A Substitute By A Scumbag Alpha - Chapter 31
“How did you know?” Zhongli Tang’s eyes flickered, her tone laced with suspicion.
Qin Wei didn’t seem to understand why her reaction was so intense. “I just heard some classmates talking about it. Was what they said incorrect?”
“It’s not right,” Zhongli Tang frowned. “Don’t listen to them in the future. I only went to the wrong place today.”
Qin Wei nodded obediently, looking as though she were willing to believe every word Zhongli Tang said.
Zhongli Tang didn’t know why, but she was completely unwilling to let Qin Wei know about Xu Sui’s existence. Perhaps it was because it was all in the past, or perhaps she worried that Qin Wei would be too heartbroken.
“Okay. I believe whatever you say, Sister.”
Looking at the expression in her eyes, Zhongli Tang reached out and pulled her directly into an embrace. Leaning down, she caught a whiff of agarwood, a scent that had grown dear to her. In truth, it had become difficult for her to view Qin Wei simply as a pheromone substitute; the two of them weren’t alike at all.
From the first day she met Qin Wei, Zhongli Tang knew. Originally, she had only sought out substitutes who shared a physical resemblance, thinking that a bit of shared comfort would suffice. But Qin Wei’s pheromones were like a massive cake placed before her, a temptation she simply couldn’t resist.
In their time together, Zhongli Tang found herself unable to conflate the two people. Who wouldn’t want a lover whose eyes and heart were filled only with you? She feared falling this deeply, she had tried to push her away more than once, thinking that if she set her aside, things wouldn’t change. Yet despite that, Qin Wei never wavered.
She was moved by this love.
“Your pheromones are very special. The agarwood is very fragrant,” Zhongli Tang said softly.
Qin Wei didn’t pull away. She smiled and said, “Sister’s pheromones smell good too. I like them very much.”
“Why?” Zhongli Tang looked down at her, her own reflection mirrored in the girl’s eyes. “No one has ever said my pheromones smell good before.”
Even she didn’t think her own pheromones were pleasant. She felt that even the most ordinary Alpha was much stronger than her. Zhongli Tang had no idea where Qin Wei’s conclusion came from.
“They are like the ocean.”
Hearing this answer, Zhongli Tang gave a light laugh as if she had heard a joke. But looking into Qin Wei’s eyes, she suddenly found herself speechless. She almost didn’t dare to look too long, afraid of falling into that sea of stars.
“Did I say something wrong?” Qin Wei looked up and asked.
“No, I’m just surprised.”
Zhongli Tang spoke the truth. She had once even doubted if she was truly an Alpha. Even Xu Sui felt the gap between their pheromones was too large, believing that even if they marked each other, it wouldn’t carry any meaning. Because of that, the two of them had never taken that final step.
Ultimately, she was seduced by Qin Wei.
Qin Wei: “Surprised by what?”
Zhongli Tang hooked a stray strand of hair behind Qin Wei’s ear, her gaze becoming involuntarily tender. “I had a very bad experience when I was young, so my pheromones were unstable. They only gradually improved later on.”
A flash of confusion crossed Qin Wei’s eyes. Zhongli Tang didn’t want to say more, so her fingertip brushed against the girl’s eyelashes. “Why do you need to know so much? Just stay by my side.”
“Okay,” Qin Wei replied simply, showing no further curiosity.
Zhongli Tang, however, felt a bit dissatisfied. She pinched the girl’s cheek almost out of spite. She truly didn’t know how someone could be so simple-minded, agreeing to everything she said. Did she really trust her that much? She even began to suspect that Qin Wei didn’t truly love her otherwise, how could she be so indifferent to everything?
This incident seemed to have no immediate impact, but it planted a seed of doubt in the depths of Zhongli Tang’s heart.
She began to observe Qin Wei more closely, a rare occurrence.
Qin Wei was a great cook but very meticulous about measurements, she wouldn’t allow even a tiny bit of extra seasoning. She preferred being marked over kissing. She wasn’t particularly close to the pet, Grey Fluff, only coming out to intimidate it when it was about to cause trouble. Feeding and bathing were mostly handled by automated devices.
After a few instances, Zhongli Tang finally confirmed that Qin Wei didn’t actually like Grey Fluff, and most of the time, she didn’t even try to hide it. One only had to pay a little attention to notice.
“Your mother doesn’t like you, so you’d better be good. Try to make her like you… actually, never mind.” Zhongli Tang rubbed the fur on Grey Fluff’s body. She didn’t really care; she didn’t think Qin Wei’s lack of interest in pets was a big deal. As long as she loved her, that was enough for this home.
Qin Wei didn’t have many friends. There were very few people she spoke to regularly, mostly limited to the laboratory. Everything else was work-related. When she encountered something difficult, Zhongli Tang would step in to help her directly.
The one person Zhongli Tang could not tolerate was Su He. She didn’t know why the two had suddenly become close. Su He would frequently come over to mooch a meal, moving from awkwardness to familiarity. More importantly, Zhongli Tang didn’t even know how they had become friends in the first place.
“The design of this drug is brilliant!” Su He couldn’t help but exclaim.
Qin Wei had created two versions: one was temporary, lasting only a month, and the other was permanent. It was receiving rave reviews.
“I believe this will definitely blind those people’s dog eyes!” Su He had also seen the insults online. No one cared about the truth, they just felt there was no way Qin Wei could have produced it and thought she was just stalling for time.
But when the drug was released, everyone’s tune changed and they went silent.
“They are such fair weather fans!” Su He was beyond frustrated.
Qin Wei smiled faintly. “Don’t be angry.”
Although there was plenty of praise amidst the noise, there were undeniably voices of doubt as well.
[I don’t believe a new type of reagent could be produced this easily?!] [What if there are problems after we use it?]
As soon as she saw such comments, Su He wanted to fire back. Her keyboard clacked loudly.
“Do you even know what you’re saying? Do you know which inspection agency certified that! Buy one and look at it before you start cursing! Where did these ‘water army’ bots come from? Your insults have zero combat power.”
Zhongli Tang gritted her teeth, the pressure in the room dropping instantly. “You’d better not use foul language in our house.”
Su He immediately shut up. Being kicked out wasn’t the embarrassing part, the key was that she couldn’t leave Qin Wei’s side.
This project had taught Qin Wei a lot, but she had grown much thinner. The contours of her cheeks had become particularly sharp. Professor Qin had given her a few days off, so she wasn’t at the lab.
“Which inspection agency?”
Qin Wei hadn’t been in charge of the follow-up work, even she thought it was impossible for it to pass so quickly.
Su He shot a meaningful look toward Zhongli Tang.
Zhongli Tang couldn’t stand it anymore. She frowned, then turned and softened her tone. “It’s nothing important.”
Qin Wei gave an “oh” in response. She opened her phone to find a flood of messages.
[Ji Qingdai: Congratulations, little junior.]
[Ji Qingdai: I didn’t see what happened before, but I’m glad it’s successful now. To celebrate, let me treat you to dinner.]
