Chapter 22: Isolation – She Will Drag You Down
Her attire was still meticulous, her hairstyle still exquisite, not a single stray strand was visible. Only the emotions on her face carried a sense of despondency and regret that did not match her noble status.
“Grandma is sorry for you. Grandma knows she was wrong.” Yu Zhenmin’s expression changed for a moment.
“I have always treated you as a respected elder, but I find that you do not respect me,” Yu Shujin gripped Xu Yinyu’s right hand with her left, in an intimate, intertwined-fingers pose.
“Yet you repeatedly bullied my person.”
Yu Shujin’s tone hardened, and a dazzling cold light erupted in her eyes.
“Do you think that if she were gone, I would fulfill your wishes?”
Yu Zhenmin’s face sank, and a flicker of guilt crossed her eyes.
“You know me, you should know my answer.” Yu Shujin sneered. “You must be tired. Let Chi Xia take you back to the old mansion to rest.”
Chi Xia pushed Yu Zhenmin toward the door. Yu Shujin suddenly spoke. “Also, don’t bring other people back to the old mansion unnecessarily. Not everyone can appreciate a pile of old junk.”
Yu Zhenmin was so infuriated by Yu Shujin’s disrespectful words that she nearly vomited blood.
“When you were alone and helpless, who took you back to enjoy life? Yu Shujin, don’t be so cold and heartless,” Yu Zhenmin said with a sneer.
Yu Shujin lowered her head and scoffed. “Why don’t you think about why I was alone and helpless in the first place?”
Yu Zhenmin choked. Chi Xia briskly opened the door. “Chairman Yu, let’s go back and rest.”
Yu Zhenmin looked at Yu Shujin’s cold and sharp face, her eyes momentarily vacant. She nodded helplessly. “Fine.”
Chi Xia quickly pushed her out, leaving Yu Shujin and Xu Yinyu alone.
When Yu Shujin carried Xu Yinyu from the master bedroom, she had already received news that Yu Zhenmin had taken Xu Yinyu back to the old house these past few days.
At the same time, she also investigated the real reason Xu Yinyu left her back then.
She had deliberately buried her head in the sand for eight years, unwilling to seek the truth, only caring about exploiting Xu Yinyu’s guilt.
But how could the girl who couldn’t even manage a confession back then bear to leave her alone?
Everything stemmed from that heartbreaking truth.
No one had safely emerged from that damp, rainy season of their seventeen years.
No one’s dreams came true.
All of Xu Yinyu’s efforts had been broken by that massive push.
After leaving, she hadn’t dared to relax for even a moment.
Signing the agreement, bearing debt, being driven out of the hometown she had lived in her entire life. Personally breaking her soaring prospects and wings, she could only stay in a foreign place with no future and no memories, diverging from Yu Shujin’s star-studded path.
Yu Shujin bent over, her heart slightly trembling.
When Xu Yinyu woke up, she heard obvious arguments.
“Yu Shujin, if you insist on taking all her burdens onto yourself, she will drag you down.”
It was Chi Xia’s voice.
Yu Shujin ignored her, coldly telling her to leave and not disturb the patient’s rest.
Xu Ruoying had long wanted to drag this loudmouth out. Hearing Yu Shujin’s impatient rebuke, she immediately followed suit. “Did you hear that? Don’t disturb the patient’s rest!”
“Rest! Because of her, the Yu family is about to be crushed by the Shen family and the Su family, and you people are here oblivious to it!” Chi Xia was furious. If Yu Shujin hadn’t been sitting by the bedside watching, she would have wanted to smack the sleeping Xu Yinyu awake.
“That’s the Yu family’s business, it has nothing to do with her,” Yu Shujin told her, her voice frigid and cruel. “Chi Xia, if you act so unreasonable in front of her again, don’t blame me for disregarding our past ties.”
Chi Xia met those cold eyes, her body involuntarily shivered, and she was further intimidated by Yu Shujin’s warning.
Xu Yinyu didn’t want to wake up to such an awkward and tense atmosphere, so she closed her eyes tightly and unknowingly drifted back to sleep.
When she woke up again, the sky had already darkened. A small lamp was lit by the bed, casting a circle of warm light. Yu Shujin sat on a small stool, processing documents, her pen strokes very light.
Xu Yinyu moved her fingers. Her nose was filled with the smell of disinfectant. All the uncomfortable areas on her body had been treated with a cool salve, and the pain was no longer as pronounced as before.
“You’re awake. I’ll get you some warm water.” Yu Shujin acted as if she had eyes in the back of her head. She picked up the kettle nearby, poured a cup of water, and held it to Xu Yinyu’s lips.
Xu Yinyu was completely exhausted and weak. She could only rely on Yu Shujin’s help, sipping slowly.
After drinking the water, Xu Yinyu felt truly alive again. The soreness in her throat was finally washed away by the water.
“Want more?” Yu Shujin asked again.
Xu Yinyu looked at her face. Even though her body was covered in bruises, she still had a strong reaction when she heard Yu Shujin’s voice; it was something she couldn’t control.
She carefully shook her head.
Yu Shujin put down the water glass, sat on the edge of the bed, and expertly tucked her in.
Xu Yinyu gripped the bedsheet until her fingers were white, her eyes darting away, trying to avoid contact.
“The doctor said you don’t have major issues, but you’ve been constantly stressed and mentally suppressed these past few days.” Yu Shujin paused, trying to touch Xu Yinyu’s cheek, but the latter sharply flinched away.
Xu Yinyu looked at her defensively, her anxiety and fear completely exposed.
Yu Shujin was stunned for a moment.
When she had touched Xu Yinyu before, she hadn’t been this frightened or panicked.
“Are you afraid of me, or do you hate me?” Yu Shujin lowered her head and smiled. “Anyway, I’ve already done every bad thing in your eyes, so I have no reservations about saying a few more harsh words.”
“Listen well, Xu Yinyu,” Yu Shujin pinched Xu Yinyu’s chin, meeting her vulnerable and frightened eyes. “Whether you regret it or not, whether you’re sick, tired, or even if you impulsively kill yourself, I will never let go.”
“Because this is what you deserve.”
Yu Shujin’s eyes were dark and devoid of light. Only a dazed expression could be seen in the deep darkness.
Xu Yinyu made fragmented sounds in her throat, struggling continuously. “Crazy… person… don’t… want…”
“Don’t think about dying. Think about your sick mother, and think about Xu Lianyue. You want them to live, right? But without you, how will they live? Xu Lianyue is a delinquent who doesn’t even have a middle school diploma. Without your guidance, she’ll be caught and have her legs broken sooner or later.”
Yu Shujin’s voice became increasingly calm.
Xu Yinyu’s struggling body suddenly froze. Her eyes widened, staring into a blank world. Her strength suddenly surged, and her hands uncontrollably clawed at her own body.
Yu Shujin momentarily lost her grip, and Xu Yinyu left a bloody red scratch mark on herself.
A fragmented, agonizing sound escaped her throat.
Yu Shujin reacted instantly, immediately tying her hands with a silk ribbon and pressing her down, then ringing the medical bell.
In less than three minutes, Xu Ruoying burst through the door and wanted to poke her own eyes out at Xu Yinyu’s frantic appearance.
“What did you do now?”
Xu Ruoying was exhausted to the point of spitting blood.
Yu Shujin was equally bewildered. “Stop talking nonsense, quickly open the restraints and strap her down.”
Xu Ruoying opened the restraints on the bed. Yu Shujin deftly used the restraints to bind Xu Yinyu’s hands and legs individually.
“I strongly recommend you take her to see a psychiatrist or a mental health doctor immediately,” Xu Ruoying said with utmost seriousness.
Yu Shujin’s own mental state was fragile and taut.
But she had already somewhat adapted to the intense pressure from Yu Zhenmin.
“If you’re not busy, I recommend you go see one too.”
Yu Shujin stared blankly, her lips moved, and she tightly held Xu Yinyu’s cold, stiff fingers. “Why?”
She didn’t know who she was asking.
Xu Ruoying immediately called in a renowned psychiatrist and nursing staff. After fully briefing them on Xu Yinyu’s condition, she immediately arranged for comprehensive clinical treatment in a psychiatric isolation room.
Yu Shujin was forcibly kept in place by Xu Ruoying.
She sternly told Yu Shujin, “Do you want to completely drive her insane?”
“She already shows clear symptoms of pathological depression. If you continue to force her relentlessly like this, are you trying to push her into schizophrenia?”
All the blood in Yu Shujin’s body turned cold. Her eardrums felt like they were covered in paper, hearing only a few terrifying medical terms. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her pale as paper. Her lips moved repeatedly. “How is that possible? She was always so optimistic.”
Xu Ruoying didn’t argue with her further, only dropping a final statement. “Handle it yourself, but for the sake of Xu Yinyu’s mental health, I recommend you do not appear in front of her for the foreseeable future.”
Yu Shujin listened motionlessly, slowly burying her face in her cold palms.
Xu Ruoying was worried she might do something impulsive, so she reinforced her warning. “Think about it. If you keep this up, you’ll only drive her mad, and yes, you might be able to keep her trapped by your side for life. But do you really want that? Is there truly nothing left but resentment for her? No affection at all? Most importantly, do you really want to drive Xu Yinyu insane?”
Yu Shujin heard a crisp sound, like a heart breaking, and then the sound of bone and flesh being torn apart and pierced through, piece by piece.
Xu Ruoying glanced at her, frowned, and saw the bloodshot eyes of Yu Shujin, who had been fighting for a week straight, only to scare the person insane with harsh words the moment she woke up.
She looked both pitiful and hateful.
Xu Ruoying averted her gaze, saying with a non-comforting sarcasm, “Alright, she’s staying in your family’s hospital, and she can’t run away. Let her get better, and then you two can be happily together again. Don’t look so miserable and deeply resentful.”
Wasn’t this all her own making?
I kindly reminded her once, twice, and now she brings the person to the hospital to feign deep emotion.
Yu Shujin felt like a needle had pierced the softest, most vulnerable part of her heart. In that instant, her vision flickered white.
“How… long?”
Xu Ruoying estimated roughly, “At least three months of isolation. You cannot appear in front of her during her slow process of accepting and adapting to the environment, until she regains hope for life.”
Yu Shujin looked through the isolation glass, her eyes lingering and intense on the unconscious, unaware Xu Yinyu lying on the hospital bed.
Even in her sleep, tears still streamed down the corners of her eyes, and her breathing was weak and faint.
It was only then that Yu Shujin realized that on the path to being with Xu Yinyu, she had once again taken a divergent, wrong turn.
She clearly knew about Xu Yinyu’s sleepless nights, and she clearly felt the pain and confusion suppressed in her heart.
Yet, she cruelly indulged these issues, slowly wearing away Xu Yinyu’s already limited vitality.
She had shattered her from a distant moon in the sky into a patient confined to a hospital bed.
And she might never be able to pick up the paintbrush she cherished most, ever again.
Yu Shujin’s breathing was ragged and painfully trembling.
