After Being Reborn, My Ex-Girlfriend Became Obsessed - Chapter 65
Regarding the other side hidden beneath Lin Duxi’s gentle and kind exterior, An Yu felt that if she were second, no one would dare claim first.
Back in high school, when she wasn’t particularly close to Lin Duxi, she could only see from afar that Lin Duxi was a gentle person—always polite to everyone, the perfect student in a teacher’s eyes, an untouchable “white moonlight” in the students’ eyes.
An Yu used to think the same way. Lin Duxi was smart, and her gentleness toward others made it seem as if the most perfect words in the world were written to describe her.
But after spending more time with Lin Duxi, interacting and living with her, An Yu began to notice subtle, strange nuances in her behavior. She couldn’t quite put it into words, but she didn’t dislike it, and it didn’t stop her scales of judgment from always tipping toward Lin Duxi.
Back then, An Yu liked Lin Duxi very much. Young love wasn’t as restrained or subdued as adult affection; all feelings were plainly visible on her face. Every time she saw Lin Duxi, her heart would surge uncontrollably. She couldn’t even pinpoint exactly when she had fallen in love, but by the time she realized it, that love had already taken root, roaring and rising in her heart like waves.
Fortunately, Lin Duxi liked her too.
After graduation, the two followed their hearts and got together. Lin Duxi would constantly demand love and affection from her; An Yu didn’t want her to have to beg while clinging to her, but she was so in love that she was willing to give anything.
It was only then, in the throes of young love, that An Yu glimpsed the subtle obsession lurking beneath Lin Duxi’s gentle exterior. The seemingly delicate, fragile Lin Duxi, like a soft vine, entwined around An Yu bit by bit. By the time An Yu realized it, she could no longer detach herself.
And now, the faint obsession that she had only seen in the early days of their romance was reflected in Lin Duxi’s eyes in the dimly lit room.
An Yu and Lin Duxi locked eyes. Looking at the smile in Lin Duxi’s features, An Yu felt a shiver run through her. For a brief moment, she recalled that rainy night years ago: the noisy raindrops pounding against the window, the warmth rising from their bodies, An Yu curled up in her arms, softly sobbing, asking if Lin Duxi would always stay with her. Lin Duxi gently kissed her fingers to soothe her, her damp, reddened eyes full of obsession and passion, softly whispering, I will.
An Yu lowered her gaze, freeing her hands from Lin Duxi’s embrace. She folded her hands and gently rubbed the areas that had just been kissed—burning hotter and hotter as if touched by spring fire.
Her heart was in a mess, yet finally, it sank, and she quietly replied, “Then it’s fine. Follow your heart.”
Lin Duxi’s eyes smiled: “Will you be happy, A-Yu?”
An Yu froze at the question. Would she be happy?
She hadn’t completed the task the system gave her and had been punished for it. Was she happy? But in this moment, even knowing that Lin Duxi could never have anything with Pei Lu, even knowing the task had ultimately been in vain, she didn’t feel much.
She should be happy, right? An Yu gently nodded, giving Lin Duxi a response.
Lin Duxi’s face lit up with a smile, her eyes sparkling.
An Yu tilted her head toward the night outside, hidden behind the curtains. “What time is it?”
“Almost dawn. Are you sleepy?” Lin Duxi lifted the covers and placed them over An Yu.
An Yu shook her head, remembering something.
“Where’s my phone?”
The light in Lin Duxi’s eyes dimmed slightly—it seemed tonight she wouldn’t get to sleep next to A-Yu. She went to the wardrobe, retrieved her coat, and handed An Yu her phone.
“Thanks,” An Yu said, opening the chat with Shiyu. From the corner of her eye, she noticed Lin Duxi watching her. “I’ll apologize to Shiyu. I promised to go to the welfare center today.”
Lin Duxi nodded: “I already told her that you’re unwell and can’t go today.”
An Yu opened the chat and indeed saw messages she hadn’t noticed before, along with a 1 minute 35 second call record.
Shiyu: An Yu, are you ready? I’ll come pick you up at 9 tomorrow.
Shiyu: Are you there?
Shiyu: An Yu?
A few hours later, Lin Duxi had called her about this.
An Yu felt relieved, put her phone aside, and lay down. It was late; she would talk to Shiyu tomorrow.
She looked at Lin Duxi, still by the wardrobe in her nightdress, her poised, cool posture faintly visible.
“You stayed with me all day?”
Lin Duxi nodded.
An Yu couldn’t help saying, “I’m sorry I messed up your plans today.”
Lin Duxi’s heart stirred: “It’s fine. The person I was supposed to meet also got busy. I’m happy. You remembered I had plans today.”
An Yu sat up again, looking at her. “It’s very late now. You’ve taken care of me all day. I’m feeling much better now; go rest.”
Hearing this, Lin Duxi stepped out of the shadow, and An Yu could see the fatigue on her face. A sense of frustration rose in her throat. She realized Lin Duxi probably hadn’t rested at all that day, which made her feel a twinge of guilt.
Lin Duxi didn’t move, stubbornly watching her.
An Yu sighed. “Go rest. If you don’t rest well because of taking care of me, I’ll worry.”
Finally, Lin Duxi’s eyes softened. She quietly gazed at An Yu. Their eyes met like tangible threads of moonlight, but eventually Lin Duxi looked away first. “I’ll go to the living room. Call me if you need anything.”
An Yu frowned slightly, knowing this was Lin Duxi’s maximum concession. She didn’t want Lin Duxi to sleep on the small sofa and felt a pang of heartache.
“Won’t you catch it from me?” An Yu asked impulsively. Lin Duxi understood the meaning behind it and responded with a hint of delight.
“No, the doctor said it’s just a normal cold. You want me to stay with you, A-Yu?”
Lin Duxi climbed into bed beside her, pulling the covers over them both, warmth enveloping An Yu. She closed her eyes involuntarily.
“All yours, A-Yu.”
Obediently, An Yu closed her eyes. She had slept all day and wasn’t sleepy now. Her thoughts wandered to Lin Duxi’s earlier words and the trending news.
“Can Pei Lu continue in the entertainment industry?” she asked.
Lin Duxi, still holding her, lazily replied, “Maybe. I just exposed his multiple relationships and mistreatment of staff. He still has hidden misdeeds to cover.”
An Yu was slightly surprised. Could someone like that still be a leading actor? Then she thought about it: this was just classic melodrama. The surprise faded slightly.
There would never be any possibility between Pei Lu and her, she was sure. She wondered what the system would do now—abandon the task or find a new male lead?
Judging by the system’s personality, it probably wouldn’t give up. A new male lead would fit better. The fact that it hadn’t bothered her yet meant it was probably busy elsewhere and wouldn’t trouble her for a while.
Her female lead had exposed the male lead’s scandal—a huge surprise.
An Yu couldn’t help but smile, recalling the punishment she had endured. The system’s so-called punishment mode made her relive the pain, but she also remembered other details. Ideas quietly began to form in her mind.
With Lin Duxi by her side, An Yu’s unease melted away. Surrounded by the familiar scent, her tense mind gradually relaxed. As she was about to drift off, a pleasant, husky voice whispered in her ear:
“From now on, when recording variety shows, I’ll do as you say. Will you pay me, A-Yu?”
Her heart sank at the sound. An Yu thought that when the system issued a new task, she would give Lin Duxi payment, and Lin Duxi would follow her instructions—success or failure didn’t matter. It was quite a deal.
Her consciousness slowly sank into sleep with Lin Duxi’s gentle voice in her ears. The last thing she muttered unconsciously was, “Okay,” before falling asleep.
Beside her, someone propped themselves up, gazing at her face—the forehead, eyes, nose, and finally resting on her rosy lips, quietly smiling.
After inviting Lin Duxi to live at her home, An Yu immediately reported it to her parents, framing the story around “Lin Duxi is very smart, having her here will improve my grades.” An Huaili was convinced, while Yu Yingzhen was slightly skeptical.
“Now it’s senior year. How are you sure Lin Duxi will set aside her studies to tutor you?” Her voice was quiet, but through the speaker it sounded loud.
“Lin Duxi said that while explaining problems to me, she would solve them herself too, reinforcing the knowledge.” An Yu straightened her back, masking her nervousness.
Yu Yingzhen had no objection and just reminded her to be kind to classmates, then hung up. Lin Duxi moved in to live with An Yu.
At first, both were slightly awkward with the sudden change. At home, An Yu would see Lin Duxi hiding, and Lin Duxi found it odd but didn’t stop it, always watching An Yu, whose fair cheeks turned pink under her gaze.
By the time of the Little New Year, both workaholics had no desire to go home. An Yu was used to their business trips, though still a little sad. On her eighteenth birthday, her parents, abroad, only made a phone call lasting less than ten minutes and did nothing else.
Meanwhile, the guests in the distant villa partied freely. An Yu wandered by the frozen fountain, kicking the tiles in boredom.
Snow crunched underfoot behind her. She turned and met Lin Duxi’s clear, bright eyes.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
Lin Duxi smiled and walked beside her, watching the stars together.
“There are so many stars,” An Yu said.
“No moon. They’re really bright,” Lin Duxi replied.
An Yu frowned delicately. “You really… have no romantic sense.”
Lin Duxi smiled, her eyes reflecting countless stars. Her hand trembled slightly as she took out a small box.
An Yu’s heart jumped. She carefully opened it—it was a bracelet.
The silver bracelet reflected the starlight, simple without decoration, engraved with faint purple roses and a few letters inside:
A&L
“Happy Birthday, An Yu,” Lin Duxi said softly. Nervous, her hands trembled slightly. This custom bracelet had nearly consumed all her previous part-time earnings. She feared An Yu wouldn’t like it or notice her hidden intentions.
Purple roses—representing a love that binds.
An Yu lowered her hands, carefully touching the floral pattern, then put it on. When she looked up, her eyes were full of joy. She stepped forward and gently hugged Lin Duxi. All past grievances vanished at that moment.
At that instant, the thumping heartbeat made her realize the depth of her feelings for Lin Duxi.
Purple roses represented a binding love.
