- After Being Possessed by the Transmigrated Heroine
- Chapter 9 - None of Them Like Her...
Bai Niao was well aware of Zhuang Han’s background.
Before her transmigration, Zhuang Han had a mundane identity she was a child from an ordinary family. It was only after she died in a car accident and began transmigrating into books that she gained noble status. Her first world was an ancient setting, and her second was a world of cultivation. Neither of those places had modern communication devices.
Zhuang Han’s original world certainly had mobile phones. Even in the cultivation world, there were tools for transmitting voices across distances. Zhuang Han had simply stayed in worlds without modern technology for too long, causing her to overlook such a critical detail. It was impossible for her not to know the importance of communication devices to people.
Yet, in Bai Niao’s presence, there wasn’t so much as a shadow of a communication device. Her living room and bedroom were sumptuously decorated; the roses by her bed were eternally fragrant, and the sheer curtains by the floor-to-ceiling windows opened and closed automatically. However, in this magnificent residence, there wasn’t even an internal landline.
Bai Niao didn’t live like someone in a highly advanced technological era; she was more like a young lady of an ancient noble family. At all times, someone was serving her, someone was waiting by her side. She didn’t need communication devices because whenever she needed something, she only had to open her mouth and plenty of people would do it for her.
When she was with these men, Bai Niao was like a true princess. She was pampered so well that one could say she was almost spoiled rotten. But it was only at this moment that Zhuang Han suddenly realized: Bai Niao almost never had a moment alone. No—she essentially never had any at all.
Zhuang Han’s palms inexplicably broke into a cold sweat, but she quickly shook her head. Perhaps she was overthinking it. Bai Niao was, after all, the “all-beloved” female lead with exceptional luck.
However, after hearing the question, the system seemed to crash.
Host, please wait a moment while I browse the background and previous plot again.
Bai Niao almost wanted to start laughing at the two of them. She had seen idiots, but never anyone quite this stupid. Yet, with the secret suddenly discovered like this, she couldn’t bring herself to laugh much. Bai Niao valued “face” more than anything else; even toward Zhuang Han, who had stolen her body, she wanted to appear impeccable.
Fortunately, Zhuang Han didn’t have the time to look into it closely for now.
The moment she saw the person in the car was Bai Niao, the daughter of the Cheng family, who had been all smiles a second ago, froze on the spot.
The driver was Cheng Yu’s personal aide. He was young and enthusiastic, greeting Bai Niao with a wide smile as he helped her down: “Miss, we’ve arrived.”
Last winter, Cheng Yu had taken Bai Niao to the military zone to play, and they had met then. Bai Niao had the air of a pampered young lady refined and delicate and Cheng Yu doted on her excessively. Furthermore, she was the only girl Cheng Yu had been with all these years. Almost everyone treated her as Cheng Yu’s future wife. Bai Niao loved the prestige, and Cheng Yu had never corrected the assumption.
Thus, when Cheng Yu instructed this inexperienced aide to take Bai Niao home, the man truly brought her to the main Cheng family manor.
Bai Niao naturally knew a mistake had been made. But the driver didn’t know, Miss Cheng didn’t know, and Zhuang Han didn’t know.
Zhuang Han paused for a moment, then held up her skirt and stepped out of the car, greeting Miss Cheng graciously: “Brother Cheng Yu had some business; it will be a while before he can come over.”
She was so candid candid enough that Miss Cheng’s expression turned somewhat ugly. Is she finally going to make her formal entrance into the family? Even though she knew this day would eventually come, seeing a former rival showing up at her home as her sister-in-law was still a different feeling entirely.
Cheng Yi clenched her knuckles, her smile stiff. Even with her good upbringing, she could barely maintain her composure. But Zhuang Han’s next words were even more grating.
Zhuang Han wore a faint smile, her expression elegant as she said softly, “Won’t Miss Cheng invite me in to sit for a while?”
Cheng Yu only found out a mistake had been made when he was preparing to head back in the evening. His brows furrowed. He drove personally, heading straight back to the main Cheng family residence.
Though she didn’t understand the situation, Zhuang Han naturally accepted the questions from the Cheng family members. She was poised and appropriate, just like a true lady of a great house.
Bai Niao’s status was awkward. Whether it was her background as a fake heiress, her arrogant temper, or her history with Duan Xiran, her presence was considered somewhat unseemly.
The Cheng family didn’t have many girls in this generation. Cheng Yi was Cheng Yu’s biological sister and the most brilliant jewel of the family. Cheng Yi and Duan Xiran were of equal status and childhood sweethearts; if it hadn’t been for Bai Niao’s interference, the two would have married long ago. The incident back then had ended very unpleasantly.
However, all these years had passed, and Cheng Yu had kept Bai Niao by his side for so long that even Cheng Yi couldn’t say much more. Cheng Yu appeared gentle but was actually as forceful as could be. Since he had sent Bai Niao over, his intention was clear.
By nightfall, the smile on Cheng Yi’s face was so stiff she could barely hold it. Zhuang Han’s posture was so gracious that she looked even more like a “young lady” than Miss Cheng herself. Despite it being her first visit, she acted as if she were coming home.
Bai Niao is a person who can’t be presented in polite society. This was a consensus formed in elite circles long ago. The Zhong family was refined and noble, considered an illustrious clan. But when Bai Niao was their eldest daughter, she was exceptionally foolish. She was malicious, shortsighted, materialistic, and vain—yet so stupid she couldn’t even carry out a bad deed properly. If her fiancé hadn’t protected her back then, she would have been worn down to death long ago.
Yet one had to admit, Bai Niao’s luck was truly good. Even after falling to such depths, people still pampered and coaxed her. Now, she was on the verge of entering the Cheng family through the front door.
Cheng Yi’s face was stiff with forced smiles until nearly 8:00 PM, when she finally received a message from her brother, Cheng Yu, saying he was coming over immediately.
She was exhausted, and in truth, Zhuang Han was exhausted too. Zhuang Han hadn’t dealt with such a scene in a long time. The Cheng family members were all elders, and Cheng Yu wasn’t there. She had only just heard from the system that the original host had a history of grievances with Miss Cheng.
To be honest, after hearing that the original host had once made Duan Xiran break off his engagement for her, Zhuang Han’s scalp felt numb. The original host was the fiancée of Duan Xiran’s friend, yet to maintain her power, she had set her sights on the position of Mrs. Duan, forcing Duan Xiran to break the engagement and causing an extremely unpleasant scene with the Cheng family.
For Miss Cheng, the incident was an absolute disaster out of nowhere. What kind of courage and thick skin did the original host have to do such a thing?
Zhuang Han’s nerves were pulled tight, fearing that if a single word went wrong, the expressions of the people before her would change. Furthermore, she truly couldn’t figure out why Cheng Yu had sent her to the Cheng family. Was it to test her?
Cheng Yu gave Zhuang Han a very strange feeling; she hadn’t been this afraid even when she first met He Yueting. His eyes were odd, always giving the illusion of being seen through. Yet, Cheng Yu appeared so gentle and easy-to-talk-to.
Just as Zhuang Han was thinking this, Cheng Yu returned. He didn’t bother with pleasantries. With a smile on his lips, he spoke directly to his aide: “How did you drive this car?”
“I told you to take her to my place,” Cheng Yu’s expression was as warm as a spring breeze; even his reprimand was flat and gentle. “Why did you bring her here?”
The aide’s eyes widened, his mouth slightly open, and his expression panicked. Cheng Yu adjusted the brim of his white cap and walked slowly toward them: “Today was an accident. Let’s act as if we never met.”
The stiff-smiling Miss Cheng also changed her expression. So that’s how it was. She wondered why Bai Niao would suddenly show up like that. Cheng Yi’s expression turned slightly mocking; her upbringing didn’t allow her to do anything to Bai Niao now, but her gaze shifted from a forced warmth to blatant contempt.
Bai Niao didn’t want to face the Cheng family at all. She hated their “noble” act, but she had to admit that when she was younger, her actions had indeed lacked consideration for the consequences. If her business with the Cheng family had ended then, it would have been fine. But she later got involved with Cheng Yu.
Bai Niao could be an arrogant young lady, and she could also be a little ostrich hiding from trouble. Anyway, Cheng Yu would never take her back to the main house; she just assumed they didn’t know about her and Cheng Yu.
But life is full of such accidents. Especially now that her body was controlled by Zhuang Han, Bai Niao couldn’t even speak a word in her own defense. She was a bit sulky and in a bad mood. Bai Niao originally had a bad temper; she always complained about others being fickle, when her own nature wasn’t much better. It was only after staying by their side all these years that she had to restrain herself.
But in her bones, Bai Niao was an extremely pampered and willful person. Even if she knew she had done wrong, she would never apologize or bow her head. Her favorite thing to do was to shift the blame. It’s all Cheng Yu’s fault for not explaining clearly. It’s all Cheng Yu’s fault for not coming sooner and leaving her in such an embarrassing situation.
Bai Niao followed Cheng Yu’s people into the car. Zhuang Han was looking at the Cheng family’s information from the system; she was rarely able to control the body for so long while conscious. Bai Niao’s steps were hurried. She could suppress her temper much more now, but after sitting in the car, she still couldn’t help but rub her eyelids.
She didn’t like Cheng Yu at all, didn’t want to see the Cheng family at all, and certainly had never thought of marrying Cheng Yu. But Bai Niao was still very sad. One by one, none of them like her, yet they treat her like this. None of them will have a good ending.
Bai Niao left in a hurry, so she didn’t hear Cheng Yu’s calm words that instantly caused a stir in the room. His fingers moved lightly, playing with the jade in his hand. Cheng Yu watched Bai Niao’s departing figure and said nonchalantly, “Now isn’t the time. When the day is right, I’ll bring Niao Niao back again.”
His expression was very calm, his features serene; only his pupils were slightly dark. Among them, Cheng Yu seemed the most gentle and good-tempered, but he was actually the most decisive and wouldn’t tolerate disobedience. Perhaps his blood carried the chill of the frozen snow-capped mountains; even in front of his family, there wasn’t much tenderness.
The smile Cheng Yi had just put back on suddenly froze again. Her face turned pale, and the color drained from her lips. But Cheng Yu said no more. He turned around, his deep white military uniform like a piercing wind that could make one feel cold to the bone even in the height of summer.
Formal entrance? The person kept in his heart… even if he offered her a crown, he would still worry about her being wronged.
Cheng Yu was busy. After picking Bai Niao up from the Cheng house, he didn’t even get in the car before leaving to handle other matters. However, this time it was his personal aide who came to take Bai Niao back.
Zhuang Han spent the whole ride looking at the Cheng family’s information. She didn’t think much of what had just happened, only marveling at the Cheng family’s power. “Truly worthy of being the female lead,” she said with some amazement. “The net worth of these male leads is all top-tier, isn’t it?”
Bai Niao was unhappy and couldn’t even listen to the conversation between Zhuang Han and the system. She irritably tried to fall asleep. Perhaps her thoughts worked in secret, because after looking at the data for a while, Zhuang Han really did start yawning, put down the book, and went to bed.
Finally, they could rest. After getting under the covers, Bai Niao’s mood improved slightly. She really liked sleeping, especially when she didn’t have to wake up early the next day and could happily stay in bed. Bai Niao had had enough of a “healthy” schedule; she loved sleeping until the sun hit her backside. Thinking this, she fell into a deep sleep.
Bai Niao had slept poorly these past few days, her dreams messy and frequent. When she woke up crying from a dream, her face was wet. She couldn’t distinguish between the dream and reality, and with a low gasp, she reached for the glass by the bed.
But before her fingers touched the rim, her wrist was caught by a man’s fingers.
He said softly, “The water is cold.”
He then turned on the bedside lamp and brought a glass of warm water over for her. It was only then that she realized Cheng Yu had been watching her by the bed. Before she could react, she was pulled onto his lap. She somewhat helplessly drank half the glass of water as he fed her.
After she finished, Cheng Yu placed his palm on her face, gently wiping away the tears at the corners of her eyes: “Did you have a nightmare? Why did you cry?”
“No, just… not feeling well…” Bai Niao gasped, her breathing still a bit irregular. She was still a bit temperamental; when she spoke, she didn’t lift her eyes to look at him.
Cheng Yu’s thumb rested on her chin. He didn’t force her to look up, only asking softly, “Has anything happened lately?”
His voice was very light so light it almost melted into the night.
But Bai Niao’s body suddenly froze. Oh no. Zhuang Han seems to be waking up.
