- Chapter 2 - "If it's you, I can still be kissed..."
Bai Niao’s waist was soft and slender; a man could easily encircle it with a single palm.
He Yueting wore a crisp, tailored suit, with only the rose pinned to his lapel lending him a touch of effortless, poetic charm. He held Bai Niao lightly by the waist, looking every bit the refined and elegant gentleman.
Compared to He Yueting, Bai Niao’s beauty was far more overt. She snuggled into his embrace, her face flushed and her voice tender. “I’d like to have French cuisine later. Do you think that’s alright?”
Bai Niao’s waist was limp, and her legs felt so weak she could barely stand, relying entirely on He Yueting’s support to remain upright.
“Of course, it’s fine if we can’t,” she added, almost talking to herself. “You suffered from a stomach ailment the last time you left. Let’s have Chinese food instead.”
As she spoke, Bai Niao tilted her face up, her watery eyes sparkling. She was as obedient as a little bird; if He Yueting so much as spared her a glance, she would be overjoyed beyond measure.
Having just been toyed with, Bai Niao had cried bitterly, and the rims of her eyes still bore a pitiable shade of red. Looking at her like this, it would be difficult for anyone to voice a rejection.
At least, Gao Zhan couldn’t.
He leaned against the floor-to-ceiling window, holding a phone in one hand as he continued a business negotiation, yet his gaze never wavered from Bai Niao.
However, the faint, indifferent smile on He Yueting’s face suddenly went cold.
“You’ve remembered incorrectly, haven’t you, Niao Niao?” He patted Bai Niao’s cheek. It wasn’t a gentle caress; it carried a hint of reprimand.
He Yueting’s knuckles were icy cold. Before Bai Niao could react, she heard him say, “The one who had a stomach ailment last time was Duan Xiran.”
He Yueting had been away for too long.
Bai Niao had been staying with Gao Zhan recently, and he had spoiled her to the point where she had forgotten even the most basic rules. She was an arrogant and foolish person. In the past, relying on her status as the eldest daughter of the Zhong family and the doting of her fiancé, she had offended many. She always spoke without thinking and never considered the feelings of others.
Bai Niao was heartless, but she knew who treated her well. Gao Zhan doted on her—a doting that bordered on indulgence. He let many things slide, and even when she spoke out of turn, he would simply act as though he hadn’t heard.
Thus, the rules she had struggled to learn were completely forgotten in less than two short months.
As He Yueting’s words fell, Bai Niao’s neck broke into a cold sweat. There weren’t many people in the waiting room aside from He Yueting’s entourage, there were only a few low-profile servants.
Gao Zhan was still on the phone by the window. With his body turned sideways, it was unclear if he had noticed the commotion. But even if he had, he certainly wouldn’t come to save her.
The boundaries between them might have seemed blurred, but in reality, they were crystal clear.
Gao Zhan doted on Bai Niao the most, and her relationship with him was the closest. Occasionally, when she was with others and encountered Gao Zhan, she would carefully wrap her arms around his neck and secretly steal a kiss from him. Last time, when they were kissing secretly on the terrace of the banquet hall, they were nearly discovered by Duan Xiran.
But He Yueting was different.
Not only did Bai Niao not dare to act out in the slightest before him, but even Gao Zhan treated him with great respect.
Bai Niao’s back pressed against the wall, her forehead dripping with sweat. Her lips trembled as she murmured, “I didn’t… I didn’t mean that, Mr. He.”
She didn’t dare look at He Yueting, but his cold gaze bore down on her, leaving her nowhere to hide. Bai Niao was on the verge of tears.
She feared He Yueting. She feared his overwhelming power, his harsh severity, and she feared his methods of punishment even more. Compared to He Yueting, the “discipline” she had endured at Gao Zhan’s place that morning was merely bedroom foreplay.
Bai Niao looked up, her eyes completely wet. She clung to He Yueting’s shoulder and whispered with a sob, “Can we wait until tonight to…?”
She was a person who loved “face,” being both vain and materialistic. After being kicked out of her family home, Bai Niao hadn’t changed; instead, she became even more obsessed with material wealth and outward glamour.
Gao Zhan pitied her; even when he was angry, he only let it out in private and never disciplined her in front of others.
He Yueting was different. Bai Niao had been personally “trained” by He Yueting. He held a high position and used ruthless methods. In the beginning, she had suffered immensely. Even now, she was terrified of him. Just hearing that he had returned made her so scared she couldn’t sleep peacefully.
This was why Gao Zhan had waited until the last minute to tell her that He Yueting was back.
Bai Niao didn’t dare bargain with He Yueting. Between them, there were very few matters where she had any room to intervene. When He Yueting didn’t speak, Bai Niao immediately shut her mouth.
“Please don’t be angry…” Her eyes were half-closed, her wet lashes trembling incessantly. Her throat felt tight with fear, yet the arms she had wrapped around He Yueting’s shoulders tightened.
Bai Niao’s heart was full of despair. It was only the first day of He Yueting’s return and she had already provoked him like this. How was she going to survive the next month?
Before Bai Niao’s tears could start falling, Gao Zhan walked over.
He was somewhat frivolous in private, but when it came to serious business, he was always reliable—bearing a striking resemblance to his solemn father. Gao Zhan stood tall, his hands tucked into his trouser pockets.
“The people from the Zhong family have arrived.” He tilted his chin up. “Should I take her over first, or…?”
He Yueting turned slightly and shook his head. “No need. I’ll go over myself.” He glanced at Bai Niao and said indifferently, “Take her to eat first.”
Bai Niao, who had been in the depths of despair, suddenly felt a surge of life upon hearing He Yueting’s words. Gao Zhan’s voice had been low, so she hadn’t heard who had arrived; she only heard that He Yueting was leaving and letting Gao Zhan take her to eat. Her tense body immediately relaxed.
He Yueting took Bai Niao by the waist and handed her over to Gao Zhan.
“If you want French food, then have French food,” he said, his tone softening. “But be more obedient this afternoon, do you hear me?”
Bai Niao didn’t understand the subtext of He Yueting’s words at all. She turned around and threw herself into his arms again, saying cautiously, “Then please don’t be angry anymore, okay?”
Ignoring Gao Zhan beside them, she looked up at He Yueting with watery eyes, as if he were the only person in her world. Although she was foolish, she was indeed very good at pleasing men.
He Yueting rubbed Bai Niao’s hair and said softly, “We’ll talk about today’s matter when we get back tonight.”
She was already being so submissive, why was He Yueting still like this? Just because she had misremembered one thing after she had called him that… There were so many of them; how could she possibly remember every detail about everyone?
Bai Niao couldn’t help but feel wronged, but she had no way to deal with He Yueting. She could only respond pitifully in a small voice, “Okay.”
She pulled away from He Yueting’s embrace and followed Gao Zhan out with a slumped face. What Bai Niao didn’t know was that the moment she turned around, the coldness on He Yueting’s face vanished.
He pulled the rose from his lapel and silently tucked it into her hair. Bai Niao, rubbing her eyes as she walked out, was completely unaware.
Bai Niao was in a bad mood, but she didn’t dare vent her anger on Gao Zhan, so she settled for stabbing at her food with a fork. She was a vain person who cared about appearances.
The top-tier dishes were exquisite and delicious, presented on pure white plates like individual works of art. French cuisine was tasty, but in truth, Bai Niao didn’t love it that much. She simply felt that compared to other dining options, French was the most high-class, which was why she insisted on it every time she went out.
She couldn’t actually tell the difference between a Michelin three-star meal and a hotel buffet. She even thought Burger King tasted better than foie gras.
Gao Zhan had a lot on his plate today. He didn’t eat much and spent the time on the phone, leaving Bai Niao with nothing to do. After she finished her meal, she started on dessert. By the time Gao Zhan finished his business, it was nearly three in the afternoon.
Bored, Bai Niao raised her hands, signaling for Gao Zhan to pick her up. She could maintain a submissive act in front of He Yueting, but in front of Gao Zhan, her true colors were fully revealed.
Gao Zhan glanced at her, said nothing, and naturally picked her up. He chuckled, “Tired of waiting?”
Bai Niao was actually quite sensitive to emotions; it was just that most of the time, she couldn’t be bothered to care about how others felt. Gao Zhan was smiling, but Bai Niao quickly realized he wasn’t happy.
If he had picked her up from Duan Xiran’s place today, Gao Zhan wouldn’t have been angry no matter how willfully she acted. But today, she had to be sent back to He Yueting.
Bai Niao looked up at Gao Zhan and said obediently, “I wasn’t impatient, I just missed you.”
There was little pretense in her words; it seemed she was simply expressing her mood. Bai Niao was very good at this; even He Yueting could be fooled by her.
But Gao Zhan knew her too well. He pinched Bai Niao’s chin, pressed his lips to hers, and gave her a forceful kiss.
Bai Niao was caught off guard. If Gao Zhan hadn’t been holding her waist, she would have fallen. The last time they had met at the banquet, he had pulled her to the terrace in the same way, pressing against her waist to kiss her deeply. That time had been incredibly risky; they were only two steps away from being caught by Duan Xiran.
Bai Niao enjoyed the thrill of this affair-like pleasure, but she didn’t dare let anyone find out—especially since she was about to go back to see He Yueting. Her brow furrowed, and she instinctively pushed Gao Zhan away when the kiss ended.
“Are you crazy?” Bai Niao gasped, still shaken. “If he finds out, we’re both finished.”
Her breathing was ragged from the kiss, and she panted to regain her composure. Gao Zhan caught her wrist and used his thumb to wipe her lip. “What’s wrong? Just because he’s back, I can’t kiss you anymore?”
He stood with the light behind him, a smile seemingly playing on his lips. But in those eyes, there appeared to be only darkness.
Bai Niao’s lips had been rubbed red. When the man’s fingers tried to probe into her mouth, she couldn’t speak, so in a fit of anger, she bit him. The moment he withdrew his hand, she shoved him away with her elbow and broke free from his grip.
Bai Niao hadn’t held back her strength, but Gao Zhan showed no expression. She was a heartless person, yet Gao Zhan was indeed the one among them who treated her the best.
At the very least, considering that Gao Zhan was on the same side as her, Bai Niao didn’t dare let things get too tense between them.
She lowered her head and whispered softly, “If it’s you… I can still be kissed.”
