- After Being Forced Into a Facial Paralysis, the Villain Said I’m Such a Drama Queen
- Chapter 33 - Who Taught You That?
When Sheng Xia played the music, she walked right up to Murong Hanwen’s side. The effect was like having a giant loudspeaker blasting thunderously right in his ear. Lu Wanxing, standing some distance away, remained largely unaffected.
Lu Wanxing allowed a faint, imperceptible smile to grace her lips. She picked up a book from the coffee table and stealthily gave Sheng Xia a thumbs-up.
Receiving the praise made Sheng Xia feel wonderful inside, though she maintained a stiff, solemn expression as she stood behind Lu Wanxing, feigning composure.
While the atmosphere between the two women was harmonious, Murong Hanwen frowned as he recovered from the noise. “Did you do that on purpose?”
Sheng Xia remained expressionless. “I wouldn’t dare. I was simply fulfilling my duties as requested.”
Murong Hanwen’s gaze swept over Sheng Xia, finally lingering on her chest. He had the distinct impression that she looked significantly more curvaceous than before.
“Look one more time, and I cannot guarantee your eyes will still belong to you tomorrow,” Lu Wanxing said. Her finger brushed her brow, her gaze falling vacantly on the coffee table.
Her tone was light, yet it instantly made the air thick with tension.
The smile on Murong Hanwen’s face faded. He looked at Sheng Xia and ordered, “Get out.”
Sheng Xia walked directly behind Lu Wanxing, eyes fixed on her nose and heart focused on her breathing, showing no sign of movement.
“Did you not hear me? I told you to get out,” Murong Hanwen said, his face darkening completely.
“I am the eldest Miss’s bodyguard. My duty is to stay by her side,” Sheng Xia replied. In her heart, she had already imagined pummeling Murong Hanwen a hundred times over.
“Do you have any idea who I am?” He uncrossed his legs, his voice tinged with rising anger.
“You are the eldest Miss’s guest.” A guest is a guest; they never become the master.
These words poked right at Murong Hanwen’s sore spot. Just as his anger was about to boil over, Lu Wanxing added nonchalantly, “If there’s nothing else, you should head back early.”
Before Murong Hanwen could respond, she spoke directly: “A-Biao, see the guest out.”
“Lu Wanxing, you—” Murong Hanwen looked like he wanted to say more, but he bit his tongue and stormed out in a huff.
He was angry, but Sheng Xia was angrier, because she noticed that the eldest Miss’s mood seemed to have soured because of that scumbag.
After going upstairs, Lu Wanxing stared blankly at the elm tree in the courtyard. She didn’t know what she was looking at, but over the years, she had grown accustomed to watching it whenever she was unhappy.
Although she knew there was no need to care about Murong Hanwen’s words, she couldn’t help but recall them once she was alone. Whenever she closed her eyes, the sound of a piano echoed in her ears like a persistent, haunting omen.
“Wan-wan, you must practice hard. Only then can you catch up to Mother, do you understand?”
“Wan-wan, your mother is a world-renowned pianist. You must believe that you can do it too.”
“Lu Wanxing, what do you want?! If it weren’t for you back then, your mother…”
A sudden knock at the door cut the voices short. Lu Wanxing opened her eyes, feeling as though she had emerged from a dream, though only a few minutes had passed.
A moment later, the person at the door hesitated before knocking again. “Eldest Miss, it’s me.”
Lu Wanxing was about to say she was going to sleep, but she knew Sheng Xia rarely sought her out. Pushing her lips together, she eventually opened the door.
“Eldest Miss, could I trouble you for a favor?” Sheng Xia walked in with her hands behind her back, her posture a bit awkward.
Even without a facial expression, her eyes and gestures were full of drama, as if she were terrified someone wouldn’t notice how unnatural she was being.
Yet, Lu Wanxing found herself genuinely drawn in by Sheng Xia’s look and played along. “What is it?”
Sheng Xia brought out some medicine. “I’d like the eldest Miss to help me apply some medicinal oil.”
As if afraid Lu Wanxing would refuse, she added, “Xiao Qi is out, Auntie Zhang has already gone for her afternoon nap, and it’s not convenient to ask Uncle Li or Brother Biao. I could only look for the eldest Miss in the villa.”
Sheng Xia didn’t actually know how to coax people, but she knew that if someone was unhappy, doing something different to shift their attention was the best method. She remembered that the eldest Miss had wanted to see her injury yesterday, so she decided to give this a try.
Lu Wanxing’s gaze fell on Sheng Xia’s right hand and noticed a patch of bruising that was even somewhat swollen. She frowned, not expecting it to be so serious.
Hearing Sheng Xia ask for help massaging her shoulder, she didn’t refuse. “Pull your clothes down.”
Sheng Xia bit her lip, placed the medicinal oil on the table, and sat on a small stool. she lowered her head in silence, feeling a bit embarrassed.
Lu Wanxing looked at her reddened earlobes and suddenly felt like smiling, but she didn’t tease her. She placed her hand on Sheng Xia and nudged her to turn slightly. “Bear with it; it might hurt a bit in a moment.”
“Tell me if the pressure is too much.” Lu Wanxing poured the oil onto her hands, rubbed them together, and began the massage.
Perhaps wanting Sheng Xia to adjust, Lu Wanxing didn’t use much force at first. “It’s fine, Eldest Miss. You can use more pressure.”
Sheng Xia felt she was tough and thick-skinned; the eldest Miss’s slight frame probably couldn’t exert much force anyway.
Sensing the indifference in the other’s tone, Lu Wanxing gave a light chuckle. Her beautiful eyes fixed on Sheng Xia as she pressed down. The sheer force of it caused Sheng Xia to let out an involuntary muffled groan.
“If you think I don’t have much strength, you might have a bit of a misunderstanding…” Lu Wanxing’s voice carried a hint of amusement. The pressure of her hands increased, and combined with the medicinal oil, it created a scorching heat on Sheng Xia’s shoulder.
If not for the “facial paralysis” effect, Sheng Xia’s face might have actually contorted in pain. Fortunately, the eldest Miss eased up slightly afterward, but Sheng Xia was still deeply surprised.
Indeed, while the eldest Miss appeared slender, a closer look revealed the smooth, flowing lines of her arm muscles. When she applied pressure, her fingers carried a profound sense of power.
It was Sheng Xia who had been prejudiced, assuming that because the eldest Miss was “frail and sickly,” she would lack strength.
Sheng Xia had refused to show her the injury earlier, yet now she had suddenly come looking for her. She was likely trying to distract her on purpose.
Lu Wanxing understood this in her heart. Recalling Sheng Xia’s previous “masterful performance” to cheer her up, the movements of her hands softened. “Endure it. Rubbing the bruise out helps it heal faster.”
The universal rule: My grandma/mom/grandma said it only gets better if you rub it hard.
While massaging the shoulder, Lu Wanxing thought back to that strange song. “Did a leather factory in Wenzhou, Zhejiang really go bankrupt?” Where even was that place?
Sheng Xia pondered and said, “Probably? I’m not entirely sure.” It was something a “ghost” in her livestream chat had bought from the mall, saying the song was famous in their streets and alleys, and almost everyone had heard it.
Hearing this, Lu Wanxing didn’t probe further, asking instead, “Aren’t you afraid Murong Hanwen will hold a grudge against you?” Though she knew Sheng Xia had a peculiar way of thinking, she was still surprised that the girl listened to her so implicitly.
If she had played a conventional song, Lu Wanxing wouldn’t have said anything.
Many people wouldn’t dare offend Murong Hanwen lightly. Considering Sheng Xia’s position, it was an impulsive thing to do, especially since Murong Hanwen was technically her fiancé.
Sheng Xia knew what Lu Wanxing meant. Without a moment’s hesitation, she said, “I’m not afraid. I am the eldest Miss’s bodyguard, which means I must protect you with all my heart. No matter who the other person is, I only listen to your words.”
From the moment she agreed to the Old Madam’s request to come here, Sheng Xia had made up her mind. Since she chose to protect Lu Wanxing and use Lu Wanxing’s influence to protect herself—she wouldn’t do things halfway.
Besides, the eldest Miss was such a good person; everything she did was worth it.
This speech was filled with such sincerity that it was almost movingly pure. Lu Wanxing thought of something and found it amusing: “Then what about the Old Madam’s words? Do you listen to her?”
Lu Wanxing wasn’t the one paying Sheng Xia’s salary; the true employer was the Old Madam.
Sheng Xia nodded. “I do.”
“Because Grandma truly cares about you and wants what’s best for you, so I will listen.”
Lu Wanxing chuckled softly. She really was a child, not knowing how to use polite, diplomatic words.
Sheng Xia was facing her sideways. Looking up, Lu Wanxing could see her long eyelashes, which gave her eyes a touch of allure. When she grew up, she would likely sway many hearts.
Although she didn’t know why Murong Hanwen harbored such malice toward Sheng Xia, as long as she was there, those gutter-rat thoughts of his would never see the light of day.
The two remained quiet. The smell of the medicinal oil in the air was somewhat pungent. Once Sheng Xia’s mind drifted from the heat of the eldest Miss’s touch, a question occurred to her, and she hesitated over whether to ask it.
Before coming here, she had seen someone in the comments asking if the eldest Miss was being threatened, or why else she would be engaged to Murong Hanwen. She wanted to know too, but she felt that with her current abilities, she couldn’t really help with anything.
Moreover, if the eldest Miss felt she was overstepping her bounds and refused to let her pass her probation, she would have nowhere to cry.
Lu Wanxing didn’t notice Sheng Xia’s inner turmoil as she withdrew her hands. “There. If it still hurts, have Xu Xiu take a look later. Make sure the bone isn’t damaged.”
Lu Wanxing helped pull Sheng Xia’s clothes back up. Her fingertips brushed against Sheng Xia’s delicate skin, and she marveled at how good the girl’s skin was, even if she was a bit too thin.
Realizing she was only seventeen an age for liking new things staying in a bodyguard uniform every day seemed inappropriate. She made a mental note to let her go to the mall to buy some clothes later.
Lu Wanxing took a phone out of her bedside drawer; it was the latest popular model. “While you are by my side, you should use better things.”
“Go ask Xiao Qi and the others for their numbers and add them yourself.”
Originally, after A-Biao bought the phone, he had already saved everyone’s numbers. But after some thought, she decided to let Sheng Xia ask for them herself. While it was a chance to communicate, it was also a way to signal to the others that she had accepted Sheng Xia, avoiding any further misunderstandings.
Sheng Xia, unaware of the underlying intentions, looked at the empty contact list and asked, “Eldest Miss, can I have your contact information?”
Lu Wanxing went into the bathroom to wash her hands, her voice drifting back faintly. “We see each other all the time; why do you need contact info?”
“Sometimes it’s just more convenient to say things over the phone,” Sheng Xia said, becoming a bit shy as she spoke. “And…”
“And I want the eldest Miss to be the first person in my contact list.”
Hearing this, Lu Wanxing paused her movements. She came out and signaled for Sheng Xia to lower her head, expertly pinching her cheek. “Who did you learn these words from?”
At such a young age, instead of learning good things, she was learning cheesy pickup lines?
“I didn’t learn it from anyone, that’s just what I was thinking.” With her face being pinched, Sheng Xia’s voice was a bit muffled.
Her face was being pinched red again, her clear eyes misting over with a watery haze. She felt the eldest Miss had a very bad habit—why did she always like to pinch her?
But remembering what the butler had said, Sheng Xia assumed Lu Wanxing thought she was “cute” just like the first time. Her face turned even redder. “Eldest Miss, you are very cute too.”
The poised Lu Wanxing: “?”
A sugar-coated bullet?
She really wasn’t afraid of her at all.
Lu Wanxing narrowed her eyes and threatened, “You don’t want the phone anymore?”
Sheng Xia’s eyes widened instantly. “Ah? Didn’t you already give it to me?”
“Heh.” Lu Wanxing let go and glanced at her. “Keep dreaming.”
She said teasingly, “This is just a subsidized communication tool. It has to be returned eventually.”
Sheng Xia wailed piteously, looking over with puppy-dog eyes, once again trying to make the eldest Miss analyze the complex emotions in her gaze. The sight was quite comical on her expressionless face.
Pressing her lips together to hide her smile, Lu Wanxing rattled off a string of numbers. “Stop acting silly and go back to rest.”
Seeing that the eldest Miss’s mood had improved, Sheng Xia felt relieved. Now that she had her contact info, she was feeling wonderful.
She looked at Lu Wanxing with complete earnestness in her eyes. “Eldest Miss, you are a truly, truly good person.” Please don’t be sad because of Murong Hanwen’s words, and don’t take his nonsense to heart.
She really couldn’t understand what Murong Hanwen was there for; he had made the eldest Miss unhappy twice. She wondered if it had always been like this him coming over just to make people miserable.
Lu Wanxing stepped back slightly and gave a low laugh. “Are you treating me like a child?”
She wasn’t that fragile; in fact, she had a very open-minded view on many things. However, she had to admit that Sheng Xia’s words had cleared some of the gloom from her heart. “No matter how much you praise me, there’s no bonus.”
“But I can reward you with two extra sets of practice exams.” As she spoke, she moved as if to pull exam papers from a drawer, only to look up and see that Sheng Xia had already vanished.
Once the girl was gone, Lu Wanxing took out a tablet. The smile vanished from her eyes, replaced by a cold expression.
Lu: Stop Project A.
Group A: Understood.
Group A: Eldest Miss, do we need to move on the other lines?
Lu: No need. We’ll discuss it later.
Reviewing the various smoothly running projects, she suddenly wondered if she had been giving Murong Hanwen too much “face.” Previously, he wouldn’t even come once a month, and Lu Wanxing hadn’t cared. Today, he had deliberately come to disgust her. The only variable during this period was Sheng Xia. So, why was Murong Hanwen coming here so often?
If it was because of Sheng Xia, what was the reason?
Lu Wanxing frowned and ordered someone to reinvestigate Sheng Xia’s background while increasing surveillance on Murong Hanwen.
Group C: Eldest Miss, the matter of Su Tong suing Sheng Xia for assault has been resolved. The court date is coming up soon, but progress elsewhere is slow.
Group C: We investigated with full effort and found that much of the evidence has been blurred. Several forces are blocking our progress. So far, we can only tentatively detect that the Murong family, the Shangguan family, and… the Lu family are involved. Furthermore, this is only one branch of the industry; the main trunk encompasses many circles.
Lu Wanxing hadn’t expected that a small character like Su Tong could involve so many things. If the foundations were truly shaken and the other side became desperate, it would cause a massive upheaval in Z City.
After a moment of silence, she decided to proceed anyway, merely instructing them to hide themselves well and not leave a single trace.
The mere cooperation of the “Big Three” in Z City would be enough to intimidate anyone, not to mention the likely presence of even greater powers behind them. If they made a move, it would surely be a “bone-breaking” affair, and even the Lu family might be devoured whole.
But what did it matter? It was just the Lu family.
Lu Wanxing tossed a coin into the air and caught it. Opening her palm, she saw it was the “flower” side and raised an eyebrow. She flipped it over to the other side and slammed it down on the table.
Who knows who will have the last laugh in the end?
