- Chapter 26 - The Frail Eldest Miss
Sheng Xia was completely stunned when she heard the news. She sprinted to Lu Wanxing’s room like a bolt of lightning. The private doctor had already arrived and was currently setting up an IV drip for Lu Wanxing.
“The Eldest Miss has a weak stomach. Eating so much at once was a bit too much for her system. Just be careful in the future,” the doctor said. She was a gentle-looking woman named Xu Xiu. She had come straight to the Lu family after graduation and was quite familiar with everyone there.
Noticing Sheng Xia, who was a new face, Xu Xiu looked at her twice and nodded in greeting before turning back to finish giving instructions to Uncle Li.
As she was heading out, she greeted Sheng Xia: “And you are?”
Sheng Xia introduced herself, “I am the Eldest Miss’s bodyguard, Sheng Xia.”
Xu Xiu nodded, “So you’re Sheng Xia.”
“Eh? You know me?” Sheng Xia thought about Xu Xiu’s name; it hadn’t really appeared much in the original plot.
“Xu Mei mentioned you to me before,” Xu Xiu smiled. “You’re quite different from how she described you.”
Sheng Xia didn’t even have to guess Xu Mei probably said she was stone-faced and didn’t like to talk.
Fortunately, she hadn’t done anything outrageous while drunk before, or else this meeting would have been incredibly awkward.
“Doctor, is there anything else I should watch out for regarding the Eldest Miss’s diet?” Sheng Xia truly didn’t dare to step into the kitchen personally ever again.
“You can just call me Sister Xu Xiu; I’m likely older than you,” Xu Xiu said as she packed her medical kit.
“Uncle Li told me about it. You actually gave me a new idea.” Previously, they had hired top chefs to cook various elaborate meals, but none of it worked. They never considered that perhaps if the cooking was a bit “worse,” Lu Wanxing might actually like it.
“Once she’s better, you can try again.” Seeing Sheng Xia hesitate, Xu Xiu added, “If you’re worried, you can let A-Biao and the others test the food for poison first.”
The joke lightened the mood between them. Sheng Xia smiled and asked, “Sister Xu Xiu, do you know why the Eldest Miss doesn’t like to eat?”
At this mention, a look of worry appeared in Xu Xiu’s eyes. “I’ve asked before, but the Eldest Miss refuses to say.”
“I suspect it’s related to her childhood experiences.”
“It’s just that all the servants who took care of Wanxing back then are gone. No one knows what happened.” Lu Wanxing took over the Lu family at sixteen. Before that, she had stayed at the old manor and never appeared in the public eye.
After saying goodbye to Xu Xiu, Sheng Xia kept thinking about the plot but couldn’t find a single clue. It was only after today’s conversation that she realized she had never seen the Eldest Miss’s parents, nor heard anyone mention them.
Sigh, it probably wasn’t anything good. There are so many dirty secrets in wealthy families like this.
The Eldest Miss’s parents haven’t appeared at all; maybe they… passed away? And at that time, she was young and powerless. Her legs might have been injured during that same event.
Wait, didn’t they say it was a car accident?
Car accidents can be accidents or intentional. Looking at the logic of people in this book, staging an accident wouldn’t be a big deal.
Seeing how many bodyguards are around her, these things probably haven’t happened just once or twice.
Sheng Xia looked at these bullet comments, also wondering what had happened to the Eldest Miss’s legs.
The transition from a female supporting character to a villain must have been triggered by something. Thinking about the Eldest Miss’s ultimate ending in the original story, Sheng Xia frowned.
I suggest the streamer investigate. Since you are the female lead now, you have the ‘female lead halo’ and can see things other characters can’t. But stay safe and don’t get too emotionally invested.] Right now, Sheng Xia’s own affairs weren’t even settled. Who knows if the male lead will go crazy soon, or if the second and third male leads will show up early? That would be a headache.
Oh my, female lead halo? Does Xiao Xia really have that?
The Tomato in the Trashcan says: This is slander! Pure slander! If I knew I was going to be fried by the streamer, I should have stayed in the ground and rotted.
Hahahahaha, person upstairs, where are your manners?
The vibe in the livestream shifted back to being lighthearted, making Sheng Xia laugh. But when she went back inside and saw Uncle Li’s worried face, guilt flooded her heart.
“Uncle Li, let me take care of the Eldest Miss today.”
Uncle Li didn’t refuse and comforted her: “The Eldest Miss’s fever isn’t entirely because of that meal. Don’t blame yourself too much.” She had probably caught a chill from the wind earlier; it was just a combination of factors.
“Mm,” Sheng Xia replied, her voice muffled.
She sat beside Lu Wanxing, quietly watching her sleep. Because she was so thin, her face looked particularly small tucked under the silk quilt. An unnatural flush gave her a sense of softness.
Those eyes, usually filled with coldness, were tightly shut. Her long eyelashes looked so soft that one might want to touch them.
However, Sheng Xia didn’t have the guts. She was thinking about whether she’d be packing her bags to leave tomorrow after the Eldest Miss woke up.
The reason: Attempted poisoning.
Seeing that the Eldest Miss was sweating from the medicine, Sheng Xia quickly got up to fetch a basin of warm water. She carefully wiped her dry with a towel. Perhaps feeling more comfortable, the Eldest Miss’s furrowed brows relaxed slightly.
There was a modern temperature sensor at the bedside. If Lu Wanxing’s temperature fluctuated, Uncle Li and the others would be notified immediately. The doctor arrived quickly, and the house was fully equipped with medical gear. It seemed that the Eldest Miss getting sick was a common occurrence.
Sheng Xia wondered if she should tell the Grandmother. After all, this was somewhat her fault. But remembering Lu Wanxing’s initial attitude, she could guess that the Eldest Miss didn’t want the Grandmother to know.
After some thought, Sheng Xia decided not to say anything and wait to see how things were handled tomorrow. Worried that the low-grade fever might return during the night, Sheng Xia simply sat in the chair, prepared to stay awake until dawn.
By the second half of the night, Sheng Xia dozed off in the chair. In her dream, the Eldest Miss was chasing her frantically in a wheelchair, demanding she eat a mountain-sized pile of tomato scrambled eggs. She woke up with a lingering sense of dread.
Yikes. She didn’t want to see tomato scrambled eggs again for a long time.
Checking the clock, it was only 6:00 AM. Sheng Xia stood up and touched Lu Wanxing’s forehead. Seeing that her temperature was normal, she breathed a sigh of relief.
Being so close, Sheng Xia could smell the pleasant, cool fragrance coming from the Eldest Miss. Her fair, swan-like neck and skin like white milk looked incredibly smooth.
Realizing what she was thinking, Sheng Xia pulled her hand back as if she’d been burned and tiptoed out of the room.
After she left, Lu Wanxing opened her eyes. Her expression was complex. After a moment, she reached for the tablet nearby.
Lu: Did the old lady come by last night?
The other side replied instantly: No. The old lady just went to do square dancing with Auntie Zhang from West Street.
The Grandmother didn’t come, which meant Sheng Xia hadn’t told her about the illness.
Lu Wanxing put down the tablet and touched her own forehead.
It was warm.
Sheng Xia didn’t dare make food herself after going downstairs. She obediently brought up the porridge Uncle Li had prepared, her heart pounding.
She hesitated at the door for a long time until the door opened on its own.
Lu Wanxing was already sitting up against the headboard, holding her tablet presumably handling some business. “Why are you standing at the door?”
“Eldest Miss, it’s time for porridge.”
With her expressionless face and the way she marched forward like a martyr, anyone else would have thought she was saying: “Drink your medicine, husband.”
The Eldest Miss was also caught up on internet memes. The thought made her chuckle. “What? Is it poisoned?”
This immediately caused a flash of panic in Sheng Xia’s eyes, and her voice grew louder: “No!”
Lu Wanxing didn’t expect such a strong reaction. She was stunned for a moment before realizing that Sheng Xia had probably been scared by her yesterday.
If Sheng Xia had told the Grandmother about her illness, Lu Wanxing indeed would have used that as an excuse to make her leave.
But…
“Don’t be so nervous. Yesterday was just my own poor health; it’s an old problem.”
Lu Wanxing knew the state of her own body, but she didn’t care. Thinking that she might leave this world with the Grandmother in ten or twenty years felt like a relief it saved her from worrying that the old lady would cry too much if she went to the underworld first.
Lu Wanxing smiled at the thought, but Sheng Xia felt that the smile was painful to see. Even Lu Wanxing’s cold sneers hadn’t made her feel this uneasy.
She quickly blurted out: “Uncle Li had someone make this porridge. You can drink it safely, Eldest Miss.”
This brought Lu Wanxing back to reality. She teased, “I don’t believe you.”
Sheng Xia: “???”
You don’t believe me?
Sheng Xia immediately shoveled a spoonful into her own mouth, only to find that it actually tasted quite good.
This move was completely unexpected for Lu Wanxing. She leaned back, realizing that even if she couldn’t read Sheng Xia’s mind, she felt very comfortable spending time with her.
Perhaps it was because Sheng Xia was so easy to read.
Lu Wanxing’s half-smiling gaze made Sheng Xia realize she was doing something silly. She put down the spoon, a stray grain of rice on her lip making her look like a big puppy caught stealing food.
This silly sight made Lu Wanxing burst into laughter. With her black hair and bright eyes, she practically stole Sheng Xia’s soul. Sheng Xia stared blankly at the beautiful woman before her.
I @#$%! How can someone be this beautiful!!
Streamer, feed her!! Help me buy some food for the pretty lady!
The “ghosts” in the livestream room were so enchanted by Lu Wanxing’s smile that they wished they could reincarnate into this world immediately, showering the stream with gifts.
Straight black hair, usually a frail and cold older sister type, essentially a bit tsundere and awkward, with a hint of “yandere” madness hidden beneath if she ever cried, it would be a total knockout.
This was practically dancing on everyone’s “type”!
Sheng Xia couldn’t see the frenzy in the chat. She just felt like her brain had been stalling lately.
Lu Wanxing tied her hair back with a cord, looking a bit more refreshed. “Is it good?”
“It’s good,” Sheng Xia said, then immediately remembered she was supposed to give it to Lu Wanxing. Having started on it herself, she quickly put the bowl down and dashed downstairs to get a fresh one. Because she was in a hurry, she used her familiar parkour moves, vaulting over the second-floor railing nearly giving Uncle Li a heart attack.
“My little ancestor! There are stairs! What are you doing?!”
“Uncle Li, I’m in a hurry! Quick, give me another bowl of porridge.” Once she got it, she thundered back upstairs, though she slowed down slightly this time to keep the porridge from spilling.
Lu Wanxing looked at Sheng Xia, who wasn’t even out of breath. She was surprised: “That fast?”
“Of course. You definitely won’t lose out by hiring me as your bodyguard.” If there’s something she doesn’t know, she can learn it very quickly if given time.
Recalling Sheng Xia’s crisp and clean movements from before, Lu Wanxing nodded. “It is indeed not bad.”
Hearing this, Sheng Xia was even happier. If she had a tail, it would be wagging like a propeller.
Lu Wanxing laughed and told her to finish the other bowl of porridge.
Sheng Xia made a bowl of plain porridge look like a feast of delicacies. The satisfaction and joy in her eyes actually improved Lu Wanxing’s appetite.
It was strange even though Sheng Xia didn’t have much of an expression, in Lu Wanxing’s mind, she was smiling brighter than a sunflower.
However, the image of Sheng Xia wearing that big-mouthed green fish-head mask suddenly popped back into her head, making the situation feel hilarious again.
Lu Wanxing lowered her head to hide the smile on her lips.
After eating half a bowl, Lu Wanxing looked up and saw Sheng Xia watching her nervously. She said tonelessly, “If you have something to say, just say it.”
“Eldest Miss… can I still be your bodyguard?”
“You…” Lu Wanxing originally wanted to ask why Sheng Xia had agreed to come here for the Grandmother, but for some reason, she didn’t want to ask anymore.
She paused intentionally, then said: “Let’s have a one-month trial period.”
Sheng Xia: “!!!”
“Great! I will definitely perform well, Eldest Miss!” Her voice was full of energy, though her face remained expressionless.
Noticing this again, Lu Wanxing wondered if this was some unique way of speaking. She could smile and chat with others, but in front of her, she was always like a wooden block.
“Eldest Miss, I can also perform my specialty for you! I can…” Before she could finish, Lu Wanxing reached out to stop her.
“Wait, I don’t want to see it right now.” She was afraid Sheng Xia might just flip off the second-floor balcony.
“Oh, okay.” Sheng Xia didn’t realize one of her specialties had already been displayed to a wide audience. Her tone was tinged with disappointment.
Seeing that “disappointment” was practically written in Sheng Xia’s eyes, the Eldest Miss said helplessly, “Next time. We’ll go to the lawn.” More space to move.
Sheng Xia wasn’t sure why her specialty required a lawn, but the promise of a “next time” turned her mood from cloudy to sunny.
After packing up the things and going downstairs, Sheng Xia sprinted to her room and folded up her snakeskin luggage bag. Five minutes later, she was greeting everyone in the villa with vibrant energy.
Lu Wanxing looked down from above, watching the sunlight outside and suddenly feeling like looking at the scenery. She brushed her finger over her eyebrow in thought. Although Sheng Xia’s identity was still questionable and she was shrouded in mystery, keeping her around wasn’t such a bad idea.
Consider it…
Like raising a puppy that tries to act serious and stern but is actually full of internal drama.
