- Chapter 24 - The Awkward Eldest Miss
Sheng Xia kept a straight face. She hadn’t expected her “tea art” (manipulative) display to end so quickly, but she didn’t mind because the Eldest Miss had clearly understood her subtext. Instead, she felt a bit more courageous and started joking around.
When Lu Wanxing entered the room and turned back to close the door, she saw Sheng Xia looking at her with bright eyes, her tone light and upbeat: “Eldest Miss, were you speaking up for me just now?”
Lu Wanxing’s tone was indifferent as she denied it: “Don’t flatter yourself.”
“Murong Hanwen wasn’t wrong about one thing I truly don’t want you staying here. If you’re unhappy, you can leave whenever you like.” Remembering Sheng Xia’s timely intervention earlier, and her “magical” performance last night to cheer her up, Lu Wanxing promised: “If you do leave, you can ask three things of me, and I will do my best to fulfill them.”
Three “life-saving medals” thrown her way immediately sent the ghosts in the livestream into a frenzy of joy.
But Sheng Xia only asked: “Does the Eldest Miss not want me here because she hates me?”
Her gaze was filled with tension and anticipation. After the two locked eyes for a few seconds, Lu Wanxing simply closed the door without answering.
Sheng Xia regretted the question as soon as it left her lips. Seeing her avoid the answer, she felt a sense of relief; if the Eldest Miss had actually said she hated her, she wouldn’t have known what to do.
Despite thinking this, Sheng Xia still felt somewhat dejected. She didn’t even feel like eating dinner and sat in the courtyard in a daze.
Seeing her low spirits, Uncle Li guessed that the Eldest Miss must have said something. He asked, “Did the Eldest Miss scold you?”
Uncle Li was smiling, wearing an “I’ve been there” look. After some hesitation, Sheng Xia nodded. “Yes.”
“Almost everyone in this villa has been scolded by the Eldest Miss. Even I didn’t escape it when I first arrived.” Uncle Li looked left and right, acting mysterious. “A-Biao once trained so hard he couldn’t get out of bed for days.”
“Ah?” Sheng Xia was curious. “Is the Eldest Miss very strict?”
“Well…” Uncle Li thought about it. “You could say that.”
“The Eldest Miss is very strict with newcomers. Sometimes, people are fired the moment they meet her.”
“Because of this, people outside rumor that she has a bad temper and is unpredictable. There was a period when so many people were fired that there were hardly any staff left in the villa.”
Sheng Xia hesitated but asked anyway: “Then why did you all stay, Uncle Li?” She could tell that Uncle Li genuinely liked the Eldest Miss.
“I don’t care what the outsiders say, but those of us here are determined to follow her for life.”
Everyone in the villa had received favors from the Eldest Miss. Back then, Uncle Li’s family was in dire straits; his wife was gravely ill, and his son was a gambling addict. Debt collectors were at the door every day, and he truly felt he couldn’t go on.
Later, the debt collectors mysteriously stopped coming, his son honestly declared he would find a job, and his wife’s health slowly improved. At first, he thought it was heaven’s mercy, but years later, he discovered it was all arranged by the Eldest Miss.
To avoid making him feel burdened, she had done it all without leaving a trace. If A-Biao hadn’t accidentally let it slip one day, he never would have known, and he wouldn’t be where he is today.
Thinking back to those days when he wished for death, Uncle Li sighed. Worried his emotions might scare Sheng Xia, he smiled. “Sometimes you shouldn’t look at things on the surface. The Eldest Miss seems cold and unfeeling, but her heart is very soft.”
“She just likes to act ice-cold, as if she’s desperate to scare everyone away.”
Sheng Xia nodded in agreement. The Eldest Miss was indeed “sharp-tongued but soft-hearted.” Thinking this, she no longer cared about the unanswered question.
After hearing what happened, Uncle Li said, “Xiao Xia, that’s just how the Eldest Miss is. Don’t take it to heart.”
“Previously, the side branches of the family sent over a few bodyguards, but they sold out the Eldest Miss’s travel itinerary, nearly putting her in danger. Since then, she’s been very resistant to newcomers.” Knowing Sheng Xia was sent by the Old Madam, Uncle Li was willing to trust her.
Moreover, Uncle Li felt that although the Eldest Miss said she wanted Sheng Xia to leave, she always seemed to give her a bit more attention.
“The fact that she didn’t answer you just now proves she doesn’t hate you at all.” Uncle Li smiled mischievously and shared a secret tip with Sheng Xia.
“Take the Old Madam, for instance. The Eldest Miss used to be very resistant to her coming near, and their meetings always ended unpleasantly. On the surface, she never showed concern for the Old Madam, so we all thought she truly disliked her. Then one day, the Old Madam cried her eyes out, asking if the Eldest Miss hated her.”
Uncle Li paused and asked, “Guess what happened next?”
Sheng Xia thought for a moment. “The Eldest Miss didn’t just walk away, did she?”
“You guessed right!” Uncle Li gave her a thumbs up. “But she only left because she didn’t know how to answer. She hid behind a pillar watching the Old Madam secretly and only dared to leave once she stopped crying.”
He happened to see it back then and was subjected to the Eldest Miss’s “death glare” for a long time.
“Later, whenever she was feeling well, she would visit the Old Madam. She’d eat whatever the Old Madam cooked and spent a long time coaxing her.” Even though the Eldest Miss refused to admit she was looking after the Old Madam’s feelings, claiming she was just “bored and wanted to go for a walk.”
“The Eldest Miss is actually a very awkward (tsundere) person. Her closing the door just now was her wanting you to leave, but she couldn’t bring herself to say hurtful lies, so she simply shut the door.”
What did that mean?
Sheng Xia pondered it, and the ghosts in the livestream pondered it too.
Alright, there’s definitely a bit of a tsundere streak in her.
I’ve observed these past few days the Eldest Miss rarely goes out. She stays in her room all day and likely rarely communicates with others. Sometimes she just doesn’t know how to express herself. She clearly cares about the Old Madam, yet her attitude was still cold when she visited.
Thinking about it, the Eldest Miss doesn’t seem to have many friends around. Xu Mei, whom we saw at the banquet, might be one, but the Eldest Miss always prefers to be alone.
Sheng Xia finished connecting the dots and asked: “Uncle Li, so you’re saying the Eldest Miss hates lying, right?”
“Correct. The Eldest Miss holds herself to very strict standards.”
Sheng Xia’s heart, which had been a bit crushed, instantly revived. That meant when they first met, the Eldest Miss was truly praising her for being cute!
She felt blissful.
However, reading the comments, Sheng Xia felt a pang of heartache for the Eldest Miss, and the joyful atmosphere around her dimmed slightly.
Uncle Li, thinking she was still bothered by the answer, said: “I have a way to find out if the Eldest Miss hates you or not.”
Sheng Xia hesitated, but curiosity eventually won out. She leaned in to listen to Uncle Li.
After a long while, “Will this really work?” Sheng Xia was skeptical.
Uncle Li patted his chest. “Trust Uncle Li. It’s a guaranteed success.”
“The Eldest Miss usually spends her time in her room reading or painting. She only comes out for outdoor sketches at specific times. Just stay active in these few spots today.”
“Once you’re there, you absolutely must not look toward the Eldest Miss’s room. The glass there is one-way she can see out, but you can’t see in. Don’t blow your cover.”
“Just go about your business like normal, but you must control your expression.”
Sheng Xia held the large garden shears and began recalling sad memories, trying to make her expression look mournful and her eyes misty. But the ghosts in the livestream were there just for the drama, frantically posting jokes in the chat.
Breaking News: Missing Ghost Report. I have a younger cousin, Aisin Gioro XX, who went missing a while ago. The family wealth is gone too. Suspected kidnapping.
My cousin is a good person, just a bit of an idiot. If anyone sees him, let me know.
I remember a story from two months ago. Madam Meng told me there was a stupid ghost who was a handful. He drank two bowls of soup in a row because of a bet he bet on whether a certain streamer was a ‘top student’ and lost everything. On his third attempt at the soup, he was shackled by the Black Guard for ‘fraudulent soup consumption.’
That sounds like something my stupid cousin would do. What happened next?
They realized he really had drunk two bowls and let him go, but the guy didn’t learn. He went back to gambling, this time betting on whether a streamer could escape some thugs. He lost again. Madam Meng lost her patience; after he finished his soup, she kicked him straight into reincarnation.
Holy cow, look at this timeline… could it be that he crashed and burned three times because of this streamer? Someone checked it was indeed that coincidental.
Hahahahaha this is too funny! I’m dying. I didn’t expect Xiao Xia’s stream to have the function of forcing people to reincarnate.
Sheng Xia nearly lost her composure reading the chat. She wanted to laugh but needed to maintain her “depressed” vibe. She quickly turned her back, lowered her head, and violently pulled the saw. With a decisive cut, the originally round topiary tree was instantly given a “flat top.”
Sheng Xia stared at the tree for a long time, feeling it looked awkward. She tried to trim it into a square, then decided that looked bad too, and tried to fix it back into a circle.
Unfortunately, Sheng Xia lacked talent in landscaping. The more she trimmed, the more frustrated she became. She successfully made the tree smaller and smaller, and a little dark cloud of gloom formed over her head.
This scene caught Lu Wanxing’s eye. Sheng Xia usually looked very sunny down there; even when she kept a wooden face around Lu, one could still feel her vitality.
Thinking back to Sheng Xia’s dejected eyes when she closed the door, Lu Wanxing paused her brush.
At that moment, she suddenly felt that the Old Madam was right: Sheng Xia was indeed a very sunny girl.
She spread out a new sheet of paper. With a few strokes, she drew a cute little dog with its tongue out, chasing butterflies.
Looking at the finished product, Lu Wanxing spaced out for a moment. She set it aside, hesitated, but didn’t destroy it. She picked up her phone and sent a message to the butler.
Lu: Uncle Li, add a chicken leg to today’s lunch.
Uncle Li looked at his phone and instantly understood the situation. He pulled Sheng Xia over and showed her: “See? The Eldest Miss really does consider you one of her own.”
Sheng Xia looked at it, confused.
Uncle Li looked at her like she was a hopeless case. “The Eldest Miss doesn’t like eating meat like this. This dish is obviously for you.”
“Just you wait.”
Uncle Li’s fingers flew across the keyboard as he sent a message back.
Old Li: Waaaah Eldest Miss! You’re finally willing to eat some meat! I’ll definitely have them make it today a big portion!
“Watch, the Eldest Miss will definitely say it’s for you.” Uncle Li gave Sheng Xia a knowing wink, looking quite smug.
Sure enough, a message came back a second later.
Lu: No, I’m not eating it. Lu: Buy more. If it’s not finished, put it on Sheng Xia’s table.
In her room, the Eldest Miss had no idea that Uncle Li had already leaked the messages to Sheng Xia. She was still busy making excuses.
After a long time, Uncle Li received one more message.
Lu: Don’t say it was my order, understood?
Uncle Li could practically hear the Eldest Miss’s voice and see her expression through that sentence—cool, detached, looking up at you in a way that makes you want to agree to anything.
Old Li: Understood, Eldest Miss!
After hitting send, Uncle Li “accidentally” let the screen stay visible in front of Sheng Xia before walking away.
He didn’t say anything; the screen just happened to be open in front of Sheng Xia.
Once Uncle Li left, Sheng Xia and the ghosts in the livestream were in a state of “total health bar depletion” (from cuteness overload).
In Sheng Xia’s mind, all she could see was the Eldest Miss holding her phone, perhaps agonizing over how to reply.
How can she be like this! Too cute!
Waaaah, the Eldest Miss is like a cat!
She looks noble, cold, and emotionless, but if she sees you’re sad, she’ll secretly come over to nudge and comfort you.
