- After Being Forced Into a Facial Paralysis, the Villain Said I’m Such a Drama Queen
- Chapter 20 - Being the Eldest Miss's Bodyguard?
“I’ll have someone fix your door later; you can head back tomorrow,” Lu Wanxing said as she brought the girl to the hotel, giving a few brief instructions before preparing to leave.
Sheng Xia had initially been conflicted, thinking she would have to stay at the Grandmother’s house, but being at a hotel made her feel more at ease.
“Eldest Miss, sorry for the trouble. I’ll pay you back however much it costs later,” Sheng Xia said with a serious gaze, not being polite in the slightest. Lu Wanxing didn’t refuse. Hearing the old lady on the other end of the line still trying to persuade her to take Sheng Xia home, Lu Wanxing gave a slight nod in farewell.
Walking to the elevator, Lu Wanxing pressed her earpiece. “Grandmother, you know I’m not used to living with others.”
For the sake of the old lady, Lu Wanxing treated Sheng Xia with a degree of care, but she would never allow anyone into her private domain.
“You, oh you… don’t you think Little Xia is different?” The old lady had watched Lu Wanxing live a solitary life for years and truly wanted someone to accompany her. Sheng Xia had immediately caught the old lady’s eye.
Furthermore, according to the butler, Lu Wanxing’s physical condition had worsened recently, adding another layer of worry to the old lady’s heart.
Lu Wanxing didn’t reply. Indeed, Sheng Xia was different the mere fact that her inner thoughts couldn’t be heard was unexpected.
However, she didn’t want to change, nor did she want an unknown variable by her side.
“Let’s not talk about it. I’ve left her at the hotel; I’ll be back soon.”
Lu Wanxing hung up. The familiar throbbing at the back of her head and a sharp burning sensation in her stomach caused the strength in her hands to falter, and her expression darkened.
A-Biao noticed immediately, pulling medicine from his pocket and taking a thermos from the side of the wheelchair to pour some warm water for her.
“Back to the old manor.” Lu Wanxing’s lipstick masked her pale lips, but the contrast only served to make her complexion look more haggard.
A-Biao hesitated, wanting to urge her to go to the hospital, but ultimately said nothing and did not move to push the wheelchair.
In public, Lu Wanxing was always composed. Even though the piercing headache made her vision blurry, she forced herself to show no sign of it.
Just as they were nearing the car, an accident suddenly occurred. The sound of dense footsteps made A-Biao’s body tense up.
In her room, Sheng Xia was calculating how much money she had left. Besides the 500 spent on the phone, after deducting daily food and expenses, fixing the door today would also cost a lot.
The bed was soft, completely different from her previous sleeping environment; Sheng Xia quite liked it. Her room faced the window, offering a view of the bustling commercial street. Looking down, she could see Lu Wanxing’s car still parked there.
Hmm? Why hasn’t she left yet?
Sheng Xia leaned against the window to get another look at Lu Wanxing. She immediately noticed that Lu Wanxing’s body was stiffer than before, looking very uncomfortable.
In an instant, the little people in Sheng Xia’s heart started fighting again. One said: Someone just helped you, shouldn’t you go down and show some concern? The other said: What’s the use of you going there? Just to offer dry words of concern and watch her leave? With that wooden face of yours, who could tell you’re being caring?
Streamer, if you want to go, just go! Who doesn’t want to say a few more words to a beautiful elder sister?
Exactly! If I were next to the supporting female lead, I’d be over there in a heartbeat!
If Lu Wanxing were even a bit ugly, the audience wouldn’t have defected so quickly. Now that she wasn’t on screen, they felt an itch in their hearts. The clarity of the camera wasn’t as high as what Sheng Xia could see, so they couldn’t help but urge her to go down.
Sheng Xia thought about it and decided they were right. She put her money in her pocket and walked to the elevator. Suddenly, a clap of thunder echoed, followed by a massive curtain of rain. Amidst the sounds of the storm and thunder, Sheng Xia caught a different kind of noise.
It sounded like… a gun!
Why was there gunfire?!
Thinking of Lu Wanxing below, Sheng Xia’s heart skipped a beat. Seeing that the elevator wasn’t moving, she ran down the emergency stairs.
The people in the livestream watched as Sheng Xia navigated the stairs like she was doing parkour, practically leaping down entire flights at a time, making them break into a cold sweat.
“Eldest Miss, A-Si and the others are being held back.” That shot just now had hit A-Biao in the arm, making it impossible for him to drive. With the rain, he didn’t dare take a risk with Lu Wanxing.
A-Si and his team were also being intercepted. If this continued, they would eventually be surrounded.
A-Biao cursed inwardly. For the enemy to know their route and defenses so clearly, there must be a mole.
“Get in.” Lu Wanxing’s expression remained calm. She pulled a case from under the seat, tossed it to A-Biao, and adjusted the seat, seemingly preparing to move from the back to the front.
“Eldest Miss!” A-Biao disagreed with her plan, wanting to take the equipment and lure the enemies away to buy time for A-Si to arrive.
This suicidal behavior made Lu Wanxing’s eyes turn cold. She reached out, dragged him inside, and slammed the car door shut.
When Sheng Xia arrived, she didn’t have time to overthink. She directly hoisted a set of four connected trash cans to use as cover. While drawing fire, she shouted to ensure Lu Wanxing’s team wouldn’t accidentally shoot her.
“Eldest Miss! Hold on a bit longer!”
The attackers thought victory was in their grasp, having no idea a “spoiler” would suddenly appear. Worried about her ruining things, they shifted their fire toward Sheng Xia to finish it quickly.
Lu Wanxing was exasperated but knew that if Sheng Xia didn’t get in the car, she would die. She drew her gun and, along with A-Biao, provided cover for Sheng Xia to approach.
The moment Lu Wanxing opened the driver’s side door, Sheng Xia swung her arms and hurled the trash cans ten meters away, causing the gunmen’s fire to stall for a few seconds.
Thank you, protagonist halo. Thank you, eco-friendly trash cans. Thank you, super strength.
Sheng Xia got in the car without a word and immediately drove like the wind. She even had the mental capacity to think that if this were a TV show, it would definitely be mocked as an absurd “god-tier” drama.
It had been a long time since she had such an exciting escape. Sheng Xia’s eyes sparked with excitement. The way she handled the steering wheel made A-Biao’s heart pound with fear. Had the car’s performance not been so good, her sharp turns would have sent them flying.
However, the people behind were relentless. They had clearly prepared reinforcements and a backup plan to intercept Lu Wanxing.
Sheng Xia glanced at the rearview mirror, her expression grave. “Hold on tight.”
“Okay.” Clearly, this wasn’t the first time such a situation had happened. Lu Wanxing nodded slightly, braced herself, and began issuing commands for backup.
But the opponents had clearly done their research. They knew the distribution of Lu Wanxing’s bodyguards perfectly; those following her were all blocked and couldn’t arrive in time.
Lu Wanxing pursed her lips. Though the situation was urgent, she didn’t panic. “Open the window at the next corner.”
“Got it.” Sheng Xia didn’t ask questions. Checking the road conditions, she pulled a heavy drift to the right at the intersection and lowered the bulletproof glass.
In that single second, Lu Wanxing steadily raised her hand and fired a shot, hitting the tire of the pursuing car, which lost balance and crashed into the guardrail.
Having hit her mark, Lu Wanxing didn’t linger. Sheng Xia immediately ducked and raised the window. The sound of bullets hitting the glass was grating and made their ears ring.
Lu Wanxing picked up her tablet again to find the best escape route, her fingers flying across the screen. “Cut across Baixi Road in a moment.”
“Hold on for two more minutes; my people will be here soon.”
Two minutes sounded short, but any mistake could be fatal. Fortunately, Sheng Xia’s skills were top-notch. She threaded through the vehicles appearing from all sides, actually managing to put some distance between them and the pursuers.
Noticing this, a flash of surprise crossed Lu Wanxing’s eyes. From time to time, she found the right moment to fire and slow down the chase.
The assassins this time clearly hadn’t expected the variable that was Sheng Xia. Although they gave chase with everything they had, they failed to land a killing blow and had already missed their best window of opportunity.
Though the leader wanted to keep chasing, he didn’t dare linger. Gritting his teeth, he chose to retreat.
“Eldest Miss.” A-Si ran over from a short distance away and pulled a new wheelchair from the back of another car.
Sheng Xia looked away, staring at the trunk of the car they had been in. She realized the vehicle was riddled with bullet holes. If the materials hadn’t been specialized, it would have been shot through long ago.
Without Sheng Xia this time, Lu Wanxing would have suffered greatly. But this event had never happened in the original plot. Sheng Xia felt hesitant, wondering if her own changes had caused Lu Wanxing’s trajectory to shift.
Fortunately, things hadn’t turned out for the worse; otherwise, she wouldn’t have known how to face the Grandmother.
Lu Wanxing’s gaze rested on Sheng Xia for a few seconds. “Thank you for saving me.”
She didn’t ask about anything else. Feeling Sheng Xia’s heavy mood, she quickly realized what was on the girl’s mind.
“This matter has nothing to do with you. I’ll have A-Si take you back to Grandmother’s.” It was too dangerous to leave Sheng Xia outside now.
“What about you?” There was only one extra room at the Grandmother’s house, and Sheng Xia knew Lu Wanxing wouldn’t stay with others.
“Don’t worry about me. And don’t tell Grandmother about today. Just say I have some things to handle and went back first.” Lu Wanxing suppressed her breathing, trying to keep her voice steady.
“Alright, then rest well, Eldest Miss.” Sheng Xia could hear that Lu Wanxing’s heartbeat and breathing were abnormal. Knowing she was unwell, Sheng Xia didn’t delay.
Just before getting into the car, she handed over a lollipop. Lu Wanxing froze for a moment; two seconds later, her expression softened slightly.
When Sheng Xia arrived at the Grandmother’s house, she thought she would have to explain herself, but as soon as the Grandmother saw A-Si, she seemed to understand everything and didn’t ask questions. “I’ll help you tidy up Wanwan’s room.”
“No need, Grandma. I’ll just sleep on the sofa.” With the delay, it was almost dawn. Sheng Xia planned to just make do for the night.
The Grandmother looked at Lu Wanxing’s habits and nodded. Then she sat in front of Sheng Xia, her expression solemn.
“Grandma, do you have something to say?” Sheng Xia sat up and wrapped her small blanket tightly around herself, feeling a sudden chill.
“Don’t be afraid, Little Xia. Grandma just wants to show you something.” She pulled a document from behind her and handed it to Sheng Xia.
Sheng Xia looked at the cover and was instantly startled. “Marriage Agreement: Ninety-Nine Unspeakable Secrets Between Me and Her?!”
The Grandmother took a look, quickly snatched it back, and smacked her own forehead. “My old eyes are failing me; I grabbed the wrong one. Wait, wait, it’s this one.”
The Grandmother rummaged through the cabinet and brought out a new file. Because of that blunder, the atmosphere which had been terrifyingly serious became comically lighthearted.
Sheng Xia took the file and read it carefully, asking in surprise: “You want me to be the Eldest Miss’s bodyguard?”
