- After Being Entangled By the Obsessive Heroine [Quick Wear]
- Chapter 38 - Qin Rong is dead.
Xian Ning was thrown to the ground by the fierce wind that rushed from the cave. Jing Ji, too, has lost his balance, sliding backward a long way with his sword planted in the ground, leaving a long trail that gave off a demonic aura.
Xian Ning’s heart sank even further. Jing Ji had completely given himself over to the demonic energy, becoming a monster in every sense of the word.
That must be why his face was so disfigured, she realized, it had been eaten away by the demonic energy.
It wouldn’t be long before his flesh was completely consumed, leaving him as a mere skeleton sustained by the very energy that had destroyed him.
As Xian Ning tried to get up, the ground shook violently, and she fell back down.
A shadow fell over her. She looked up and saw a massive creature standing behind her, its eyes were as big as lanterns, staring down at her.
Was this the monster that was hiding in the cave?
Xian Ning’s mind froze for a few seconds before she calmly lay flat on the ground. A beast this big was impossible to escape. The only thing she could do was wait to die.
Unless it showed mercy.
But that was imposs…
Wait, maybe it wasn’t?
Xian Ning watched as the creature ignored her and walked directly toward Jing Ji, her mind filled with questions.
Could it be that my cultivation is so low it doesn’t even consider me worth eating?
For the first time, Xian Ning thought that being a weak cultivator wasn’t a bad thing.
Jing Ji had been enjoying the show, assuming the monster would devour Xian Ning first. He was laughing until the three-hundred-meter-tall beast came charging at him.
His smile froze as he quickly dodged it.
Despite its size, the monster was incredibly agile. With one swipe of its claws, it tore off Jing Ji’s sleeve. Xian Ning felt a wave of nausea as she saw the squirming flesh on his arm.
Taking advantage of their fight, Xian Ning slowly got up and cautiously moved away from the battlefield.
She had no idea what the monster was thinking. If it ate Jing Ji and then came after her, it would be a very unfair ending.
She had to get out of there while she still could.
As Xian Ning was about to leave the area, the monster suddenly turned and roared, as if to stop her.
Xian Ning flinched, her breath catching in her throat, her legs turning to jelly. She didn’t dare take another step.
She wasn’t sure if continuing to run would anger the beast.
Jing Ji wasn’t completely useless, though. He was holding his own against the beast. No, he was just very good at dodging and had only sustained a few minor injuries.
After failing to kill him multiple times, the monster grew impatient. It roared again, stomping its paw on the ground, sending up clouds of dust and cracking the earth.
Jing Ji was knocked back, landing on the ground and spitting up blood. The monster raised its paw and stomped down hard.
There was a sickening squelch. Something had been crushed.
Xian Ning was stunned. Was he really dead just like that?
The monster lifted its paw, revealing a puddle of dark red blood. It looked at the mess for a few seconds before turning and walking toward Xian Ning.
Xian Ning closed her eyes, her heart pounding in her throat.
This is it, she thought. It’s coming for me now.
The monster stopped in front of her and let out a hoarse cry, seemingly hinting at something.
Xian Ning didn’t understand the hint. “What are you trying to say?” she asked.
The monster rolled its eyes as if to show its disdain. Xian Ning was annoyed but didn’t dare say a word.
The monster, realizing it couldn’t communicate with her, simply picked her up in its mouth, tossed her onto its back, and began walking toward the depths of the forest.
Xian Ning looked at the increasing demonic energy ahead and knew she had to speak up.
“Hey! Why are you taking me to the demon realm?!”
This was the demon realm. A cultivator like her would be walking straight into her death.
The monster ignored her and continued on, even speeding up.
“Hey! I’m not going to the demon realm! Put me down! I’m not going, do you hear me?!”
The monster silently lowered its two ears and continued on its way.
Xian Ning tried to climb off its back, but the moment she shakily stood up, it wrapped its tail around her.
Xian Ning: …
You’re pretty quick, aren’t you?
Beyond the forest was demon territory. The deeper they went, the darker the light and the heavier the demonic energy became. Xian Ning started to find it difficult to breathe.
Her head began to throb, and her temples ached, just like when the forgetfulness spell had acted up before.
Had the influx of demonic energy triggered a chain reaction?
The closer they got to the demon realm, the more excited the monster became. It moved so fast its four paws were a blur. Xian Ning was jolted so much she felt like her internal organs were being rearranged, and she found it even harder to breathe.
“I know you’re happy to be home, but please hold on, I’m about to throw up…ugh…”
And Xian Ning did throw up.
The monster screeched to a halt, its feet skidding to a smoking stop. It turned its head, looking at Xian Ning in disbelief.
Xian Ning forced a weak smile. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to.”
The monster swung its tail, tossing her to the ground with a loud huff.
Feeling dizzy, Xian Ning held onto the monster’s paw, resting for a while before she could stand straight.
It was only then that she realized they were already in the demon realm.
In the dim light, the scenery seemed to shift. Towering trees lined the sides of the road, which led to a single city gate in the center.
It was the only relatively bright place.
But even with the light, the gate looked like a gaping abyss, filling her with dread. Xian Ning didn’t want to get closer, but the monster wouldn’t let her have her way.
The monster let out a low growl, the bloody stench from its mouth nearly making Xian Ning faint.
Her feet felt nailed to the ground, unable to move a single inch. The monster gripped her collar and walked step by step toward the city gate.
“Cough, cough… please… I’ll walk myself… cough, cough…”
Xian Ning’s collar was choking her, and she was getting less and less air.
Luckily, the monster took large strides and reached the gate in just a few steps. It released Xian Ning and bowed its head in a specific direction.
While catching her breath, Xian Ning followed its gaze and saw a familiar figure.
Dressed in a red and black dress, her long hair cascading like a waterfall, a woman with a face as fair as jade slowly emerged from the darkness with a cryptic smile on her lips.
“My dear junior sister, I’ve been waiting for you for a long time.”
Xian Ning looked at the person in front of her, her emotions a complicated mess. To be honest, she didn’t understand who Fan Hua was. She wasn’t completely bad, but she wasn’t completely good either, leaving Xian Ning unsure whether she should hate her or not.
“Why were you waiting for me?” Xian Ning’s voice was colder than she expected, a clear sign that she had already made her choice.
Fan Hua’s smile faded slightly, then returned. “To make you my young mistress, of course.”
Her new smile was gentler, and she took Xian Ning’s hand, her eyes gazing at her with a look of deep affection.
“My dear junior sister, I’ve missed you so much.”
Startled by her intense stare, Xian Ning pulled her hand away. Her voice was sharp. “Let’s stick to our names. You’re the young mistress of the demon clan now, not my senior sister anymore.”
Fan Hua’s tone was unreadable. “Do we have to be so formal with each other?”
“Yes,” Xian Ning’s voice was firm. “The righteous and the wicked can’t coexist. There is nothing between us to speak of.”
Fan Hua said nothing, only smiled at her. The smile slowly morphed into a look of menace.
“In that case, I will have to find my own way of keeping you here.”
The world tilted, and Xian Ning’s vision went black. She collapsed. Fan Hua caught her, her eyes filled with a fanatical possessiveness.
“You will always be mine in the end.”
*******
Xian Ning was locked in a lavish palace, with the finest clothes, food, and over a dozen maids to wait on her.
Fan Hua would eat and sleep with her every day, but sensing Xian Ning’s resistance, she never touched her, simply lying in the same bed as her. It was as if a galaxy separated them.
Half a month passed, and Xian Ning felt like a flower with no sunlight, slowly withering away.
“Why are you doing this?” she asked.
Xian Ning was in a huff and refused to eat. Fan Hua sat beside her, picking up some food and holding it to her lips.
“What’s wrong? Isn’t this better than your life on Jade Purity Mountain?” Fan Hua countered.
She wasn’t being sarcastic; she genuinely believed this to be true.
Xian Ning felt the helpless frustration of punching a pillow. It was pointless to reason with someone who had no logic to begin with.
“Let me go. I have something important I need to do.”
Fan Hua put down her chopsticks, her eyes darkening. “If you’re going to look for Qin Rong, then don’t bother. She’s dead.”
Xian Ning’s eyes widened, and her breath caught in her throat. Even though she knew the protagonist couldn’t die so easily, the words still sent a jolt of panic through her.
Did Fan Hua’s words mean that she had seen Qin Rong after she had turned into a demon? And that Qin Rong was badly hurt? Otherwise, why would she be so sure that she was dead?
“Fine, let’s say she’s dead. I won’t look for her. I just want to live my own life. Let me go.”
The most important thing was to get out of there. Provoking Fan Hua was not a good idea.
Fan Hua looked at her, her eyes wounded, and asked, “Why do you insist on leaving?”
“Because I hate it here!” Xian Ning stood up abruptly, looking down at Fan Hua. “I hate everything about this place, but most of all, I hate you!”
Fan Hua looked up, staring at her in a daze. After a long moment, she stood up.
“It all comes back to Qin Rong. What’s so great about her that you would do this?”
“She’s good in every way. At least, better than you.”
Fan Hua suddenly started to laugh, her eyes turning bloodshot and her expression growing grim and wild.
“She’s dead! She’s dead! Even if you go out there, you won’t find her! Why do you have to leave? Isn’t it good enough to stay by my side?”
As she spoke, her pupils had turned completely red, and her face became a distorted, frightening mask. There was no trace of her old self left.
Xian Ning backed away in fear, but Fan Hua grabbed her wrist, leaned in, and, holding the back of her head, kissed her.
Xian Ning pushed at her face, but the distance between them kept shrinking.
With a sharp clang, a glimmering sword broke through the window, slicing between them and forcing them apart.
Xian Ning fought back her tears and looked toward the door.
The flying sword curved and returned to its owner’s hand. Qin Rong walked in, her face cold was and sullen. She stood in front of Xian Ning and stared at Fan Hua.
“So, I go into seclusion to break through, and Young Mistress Yin starts spreading rumors that I’m dead?”
Only then did Xian Ning realize that Qin Rong’s cultivation had improved even further. She had one foot in the realm of the immortals.
But the demonic energy was still with her. What was going on?
Seeing Qin Rong, Fan Hua’s expression was even more grim than her own, and her eyes held a killing intent she couldn’t hide.
“It seems the last lesson wasn’t enough. You just won’t die, will you?”
Qin Rong sneered, a glint of mockery in her eyes. “I should thank Young Mistress Yin. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have broken through so quickly.”
Fan Hua’s face was as dark as ink. The sword in her hand began to gather its intent, a red and black aura swirling around it, giving off an immense pressure.
This was the first time Fan Hua had used her sword since leaving Jade Purity Mountain.
Xian Ning was surprised. Her sword had been cultivated to this level, too. Even though Qin Rong had broken through, winning would likely not be easy for her.
“Let’s settle this with our swords. If I win, you’ll leave the demon realm and never bother us again.” Fan Hua gritted out the words through clenched teeth.
Qin Rong’s eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint within them. “You want to use Xian Ning as the prize?”
Fan Hua said nothing, implicitly agreeing.
Qin Rong’s eyes narrowed further, a cold light glinting in them. “I will be taking Xian Ning with me, and no one will stop me.”
“And, I would never use Xian Ning as a prize.”
