- After Being Entangled By the Obsessive Heroine [Quick Wear]
- Chapter 21.1 - "This is your punishment."
Xue Yingxian waited at the school gates with a bouquet of roses in her arms. She had originally wanted to wait by the teaching building, but in the end, she decided against it. There are too many people, too many eyes.
Of course, she wanted nothing more than to shout to the world that Xian Ning was her girlfriend. But since Xian Ning insisted on keeping it a secret for now, she could only obey.
The champagne roses gave off a delicate fragrance, softening the coldness of the night with warmth. Yingxian glanced at the time, her heartbeat racing uncontrollably.
Xian Ning would be coming out any minute now.
Looking down at the roses in her arms, Yingxian’s lips curved unconsciously. Xian Ning might think she was being dramatic, but she wanted a proper confession. Yes, they had naturally fallen into a relationship, but some rituals shouldn’t be skipped. She didn’t want any regrets.
Xian Ning deserved this much.
But minutes passed, and still no sign of her. Anxiety started to gnaw away at Yingxian’s excitement. Maybe it was just the gloomy weather, but the longer she waited, the stronger the unease in her chest grew.
“God, it was so scary! Can you believe it?”
“Of course it’s true. That lunatic had a knife this long! There was blood everywhere, ugh!”
Yingxian froze, then rushed forward to stop the two girls.
“Wait! was that lunatic a man or a woman?”
“A man. Not bad-looking, but all thin and hollow-eyed, like a ghost drained him dry.”
Before the girl finished, Yingxian was already sprinting into the school.
Xian Ning, please… don’t let anything happen to you!
She ran with everything she had, lungs burning as cold air stabbed her chest like needles. Almost at the exam hall, her foot slipped and she fell hard. The roses she was holding were scattered and the thorns were cutting across her cheek. Blood were dripping onto pale petals in a strange, cruel beauty.
Her elbow was scraped raw and her knee was throbbing painfully, but she couldn’t stop. She picked herself up and kept running, leaving a trail of torn petals behind.
This morning she had heard that the Tang family was planning to bring Tang Di home. She’d even asked her father to persuade Uncle Tang to keep him in care until his condition stabilized. Father had said Uncle Tang agreed and was planning to transfer him abroad for treatment.
She had thought the Tang family would handle it. That’s why she hadn’t worried.
My fault… I should have known better. I should never have left Xian Ning alone.
Her face was damp. She didn’t know if it was tears or blood. At last she reached the exam hall, only to find it empty.
Where was Xian Ning?
She searched frantically, then stumbled out of the building.
Think. Stay calm. Call her. Yes, call her!
With trembling hands, she dug out her phone and dialed, her heart hammering in her throat.
Please, pick up…
“Xiao Xian?”
A familiar voice came from behind. Stiffly, Yingxian turned and saw Xian Ning standing there with her phone in hand, blood staining the sleeve of her sweater.
“Xian Ning!”
Yingxian threw the roses aside and crushed her into her arms, holding on as if she’d disappear.
“Are you hurt? Did he cut you anywhere?”
Xian Ning felt her trembling and gently rubbed her back. “I’m fine. This is Tang Di’s blood.”
Yingxian pulled back to scan her from head to toe, still unable to believe it. “Really? You’re not lying to me?”
Her own face was streaked with blood and tears, hair tangled by the wind, looking so disheveled it stabbed at Xian Ning’s heart.
Idiot…
“Of course it’s true. If I were hurt, would I be standing here perfectly fine?”
At those words, Yingxian broke down completely. Tears poured as she covered her face, voice muffled and shaking.
“I was so scared, Xian Ning. I was terrified.”
Xian Ning’s nose stung. She wrapped her arms around her, soothing her in soft murmurs. “It’s over now. Tang Di’s been taken away. I’m not hurt. It’s okay, Xiao Xian. Don’t be afraid.”
Yingxian sobbed against her for a long while before Xian Ning teased lightly, “You little crybaby. If your employees saw you like this, what kind of boss would they think you are?”
Embarrassed, Yingxian muttered, “I only cry in front of you.”
Xian Ning found her unbearably endearing. She wiped her tears gently, careful not to touch her wounds. “Let’s get you to the hospital. You’ll get an infection if we wait too long.”
She picked up the roses from the ground, then laced her fingers with Yingxian’s, leading her forward.
Yingxian blinked at their joined hands, then grinned through her tears. Xian Ning had always refused to hold hands at school. Now she wasn’t hiding anymore.
Worth every bruise.
At the school gate, a police car waited. An officer asked Xian Ning to give a statement. Though she worried about Yingxian’s injuries, Yingxian shook her head and went with her.
It was a simple account: Tang Di had lunged at her with a knife, Xian Ning had bolted, and by sheer luck crashed into a nearly two-meter-tall, 90-kilo classmate. Tang Di had been subdued on the spot, injuring himself in the struggle. The blood on her sleeve came from restraining him.
Xian Ning didn’t ask what punishment awaited Tang Di. With the Tang family’s influence, he’d surely be protected. And even if not, the law excused crimes committed in madness.
Leaving the station, Yingxian’s face looked pale. When Xian Ning asked if she felt unwell, she shook her head.
But walking together soon revealed the truth—she was clearly limping.
Xian Ning crouched down to check, discovering blood seeping through her jeans at the knee.
“Why didn’t you say anything?!” she scolded, frustrated.
Yingxian instantly looked pitiful. “I didn’t want you to think I was clumsy… falling on flat ground, it’s so embarrassing.”
Xian Ning sighed. All she saw was someone who cared too much, panicked into stumbling. She must’ve been scared out of her mind.
She shoved the flowers into her arms and crouched again. “Get on. I’ll carry you.”
Yingxian refused. “You’re too thin. You can’t carry me. I’ll be fine walking slowly.”
“Don’t underestimate me. I may look thin, but I’m strong. And it’s only a few steps. Come on.”
So Yingxian climbed onto her back. “Don’t push yourself. If it’s too heavy.”
But Xian Ning hoisted her easily, walking steadily as though it were nothing.
“Not heavy at all,” she said.
Yingxian looped her arms around her neck, then teased slyly in her ear, “Funny, you never seem to have this much strength in bed.”
Xian Ning nearly tripped. “Shut up!”
“Come on, you act so delicate when we’re together. I can pin you down with one hand. Don’t tell me you’re faking?”
“One more word and I’ll drop you!”
Yingxian just laughed, wickedly delighted.
By the time they left the hospital it was already past ten. The Xue family driver picked them up, startled by the blood on Xian Ning’s clothes, and immediately offered to call the family.
“Don’t. We’ll explain ourselves when we get back,” Yingxian stopped him.
When they arrived, her parents were already waiting anxiously at the door. Mother Xue rushed over, abandoning all the grace of a refined lady as she checked them both frantically.
“Where are you hurt? Is it serious?”
She examined Yingxian’s face, then grabbed Xian Ning’s hands, only relaxing when she saw she was unharmed.
“Mom, don’t worry so much,” Yingxian reassured her.
“How could I not? From the moment you said Tang Di went after Xian Ning, my heart’s been in my throat! If not for your father stopping me, I would’ve rushed out to find you myself.”
She turned furiously on her husband. “The Tang family—why haven’t they dealt with this menace already?”
“Of course, dear, you’re right. First thing tomorrow, I’ll speak to them,” Father Xue soothed.
Her mother helped Yingxian inside carefully. “It’s freezing out. Come, come, let’s get you in.”
After hearing the whole story, her anger flared again, muttering about teaching Tang Di a lesson herself.
Xian Ning chuckled. “Careful, Mom. Anger causes wrinkles.”
Mother Xue exhaled slowly, calming down.
“Anyway, it’s already eleven. You should rest. Xiao Xian and I need to as well,” Xian Ning added with a glance at Yingxian.
“Yes, yes, you’re right,” Mother Xue said, suddenly realizing she was keeping them up. After a few more reminders, she finally went upstairs.
Helping Yingxian to her room, Xian Ning asked, “Do you need help?”
Yingxian blinked innocently. “Help with what?”
“Like… taking a bath?” Xian Ning dragged out her words.
Yingxian’s eyes lit up. She pulled her inside and pinned her against the door. “You’ll really help me bathe?”
“Obviously.”
“Not hurting anymore then?” she teased.
Xian Ning avoided her gaze, flustered. “I meant just washing you!”
Yingxian laughed low, voice rich and magnetic. “Alright, alright. Just washing.”
But once in the bathroom, it wasn’t so simple. Because of her wounds, Yingxian couldn’t shower and had to soak instead. She tugged Xian Ning in with her, draping her injured leg across her lap, rubbing against her “by accident.”
Xian Ning grabbed the restless limb. “Doesn’t seem like it hurts much. Wash yourself, then.”
When she tried to stand, Yingxian slipped, falling into her arms dramatically.
On purpose. Definitely on purpose.
