- Chapter 76 EXTRA STORY 7 - Extra Story 7: Revisit
March 14th — Tan Shiyi’s birthday.
It was also the day she experienced her secondary differentiation.
To make sure Shiyi had an unforgettable birthday and a smooth transition through this turbulent phase, Tang Ling had started preparing an entire week in advance.
But the sudden reappearance of that syrupy electronic voice still caught her completely off guard.
“Ding. Your customer service assistant, Xiao Nan, is back online!”
Tang Ling frowned. “Didn’t you already unbind? What are you doing back here?”
“Aww, Host, you sound so fierce! Don’t you miss me even a little? I came back especially for a follow-up visit!”
Tang Ling groaned. “No need for any follow-up. Everything’s great. All ratings: five stars, perfectly satisfied.”
“That won’t do! The follow-up visit has to last for a full week! I’ve already planned it—this time, we’re forming the Shishi Secondary Differentiation Support Team to help her transition successfully!”
Judging from Xiao Nan’s overexcited tone, Tang Ling knew there was no getting rid of it anytime soon.
She sighed. “You’re not about to give me another mission, are you?”
“Hehehe, well, actually, yes, Host, there is a small task. Sorry about that.”
Tang Ling: “…”
She didn’t even want to speak.
“Fine. What’s the mission?”
“As you recall, Host, you were once bound to the Scummy Alpha Training System and received numerous rewards from us. Now, we need to evaluate whether those rewards have effectively improved your quality of life. This is part of our ongoing research. So, this follow-up is to assess whether you’ve made full use of your rewards to become a more charming Scummy Alpha!”
Tang Ling exploded. “Didn’t I already graduate from being a Scummy Alpha? Why on earth do I need to be an even more charming one?”
“Please calm down, Host. During this follow-up, you don’t need to raise your Scummmy Value. You only need to fully demonstrate the advantages of your rewards—to earn Shishi’s approval!”
“Approval? And how exactly am I supposed to do that? Just think about what those so-called rewards even were!” Tang Ling started listing them off.
“Eight-pack abs, bulging chest muscles, Incredible Arm Strength, Majestic Curves —how the hell am I supposed to get her approval with that?”
“Now, now, you can’t call our rewards ‘ridiculous’! Don’t forget about your flawless skin and sharp senses—you loved those, didn’t you? Anyway, you must get Shishi’s approval! Otherwise, the system might consider your rewards invalid and automatically rebind you. That would be troublesome!”
Tang Ling scowled. “So, what if it rebinds? My secondary differentiation’s already done anyway.”
“Oh, you don’t understand! If the system rebinds, all your enhanced organs will enter freeze mode. And since your entire body’s been optimized, there’s a good chance you’ll become, well, completely paralyzed.”
Tang Ling: “……”
She was speechless. “Fine. I’ll go earn her approval. Happy now?”
“Yay! Host, fighting! I believe in you!”
Tan Shiyi was humming to herself in the kitchen, cooking dinner.
Tang Ling leaned against the doorway, cleared her throat.
Shiyi turned, smiling brightly. “What’s wrong?”
Tang Ling felt strangely guilty. She took a deep breath, walked up to her, and—without thinking too much—lifted her shirt slightly to reveal her abs.
“Touch them.”
Shiyi froze, face instantly reddening. She pushed her away. “What are you doing? I’m cooking!”
Tang Ling also wanted to die from embarrassment, but to avoid turning into a living statue, she had no choice but to push through.
“Wife, just touch them. And tell me what you think.”
“I’ve touched them before, they’re fine, what else do you want me to say.” Shiyi mumbled, cheeks flushed, as she turned to lift a bucket of peanut oil from the floor.
Tang Ling’s eyes lit up. Aha! Time to show off my Incredible Arm Strength!
She strode forward and, with one finger, lifted the oil bucket. “Wife, look! Aren’t my arms amazing?”
Shiyi quickly took the bucket away, prying open her fingers with concern. “You’ll hurt yourself doing that! Stop messing around. Go rest in the living room.”
Tang Ling felt like crying. In desperation, she rolled up her sleeves. “Shiyi, look—my wounds healed perfectly, right? Smooth and flawless?”
Shiyi stared at her in confusion, reaching out to feel her forehead. “Are you feeling okay? You’re not running a fever. Why are you talking nonsense? Anyway, I made your favorite seafood scallion pancakes. They’re almost done. Go grab your chopsticks and wait.”
Tang Ling slumped into her seat at the dining table. “She didn’t compliment me even once.”
“Host, come on, this is only the beginning! We’ve got a whole week! Keep it up and you’ll win her heart eventually!”
After dinner, Shiyi rested with her head on Tang Ling’s lap, glasses perched on her nose as she carefully sewed tiny diapers for their two baby cockatiels.
Tang Ling absentmindedly brushed her bangs aside. “Wife, don’t you think my body has a lot of advantages?”
Shiyi didn’t even look up. “Say another word like that and I’ll stab you with this needle.”
“I’m serious! Look at my hairline—it’s naturally voluminous, great face contouring, right? And my jawline—tight, refined, perfectly sculpted, isn’t it?”
This time, Shiyi sat up and stared at her. “You’re not developing some kind of appearance anxiety, are you? Did someone say something to you recently?”
Tang Ling hesitated. “Maybe a little. You’re about to undergo secondary differentiation, and I just worry I’m not good enough for you. Could you, maybe, compliment me a little? Give me some confidence, wife?”
Shiyi couldn’t help laughing. “It’s my secondary differentiation, and you’re the one stressing out? Fine, fine—I’ll compliment you. You’re amazing. No one could ever compare to you in my heart. Happy now?”
Tang Ling: “…”
Honestly? Not really. That half-hearted tone didn’t hit the mark at all.
“Host,” Xiao Nan chimed in, “how about this—you prepare a birthday gift for Shishi! Make her happy, and maybe then she’ll shower you with compliments!”
Tang Ling thought for a moment. That didn’t sound like a bad idea.
“Alright then. Let’s start with a birthday gift.”
When it was her own birthday, Shiyi had written her an original song—thoughtful, heartfelt, deeply personal.
By comparison, anything Tang Ling could buy now felt painfully inadequate.
Therefore, Tang Ling decided to do something special—she designed a small RPG game just for Tan Shiyi.
She used an old-school game-making software, the kind with pixel-style graphics, but the real charm lay in the script she had written with great care—a story inspired by their shared life together.
Because time was short, Tang Ling began secretly working late at night after Tan Shiyi had fallen asleep, sneaking into the study to continue developing the game.
Xiao Nan was thoroughly impressed. “Host, you’re so creative! But I think it would be even better if you added candles, fireworks, and roses!”
Tang Ling was speechless. “You still haven’t given up on that idea?”
“Hehehehe, well, you’ve never fulfilled my request,” Xiao Nan teased.
Tang Ling couldn’t help but admire the little system’s persistence. “Fine, roses and scented candles I can get—but fireworks are off the table. You can’t set them off in the city.”
Xiao Nan got excited. “Then at least arrange the candles in the shape of a heart!”
“That’s so tacky!”
As Tan Shiyi’s birthday drew nearer, she began showing signs of her impending secondary differentiation—restless, easily distracted, with little appetite, and a faint melancholy clouding her expression.
Afraid she might be unhappy, Tang Ling took over all the housework, tried cooking different meals every day, and even took full responsibility for caring for their little pets.
But Tan Shiyi remained downcast, locking herself in the bedroom after work.
The two cockatiels weren’t fond of their new “mom,” hovering by the bedroom door and pecking at it with their beaks.
Tang Ling had to scoop them up again and again, returning them to their cage. “Be good, babies. Don’t go disturbing your mom.”
Once the birds were settled, she started setting up the birthday surprise.
At the center of the dining table sat a custom buttercream cake decorated with a small rabbit holding a bouquet of fresh flowers.
And—after much internal struggle—she gave in to Xiao Nan’s relentless “Heart-shaped candles! Heart-shaped candles!” and arranged the scented candles accordingly.
She turned off the lights, lit each candle one by one, and then went to knock on Tan Shiyi’s door.
“Shiyi, don’t stay cooped up in there. Come out and talk to me?”
After a long pause, the door finally opened.
The room wasn’t warm, but Tan Shiyi’s forehead was damp with sweat, her cheeks lightly flushed, and her bangs clung to her skin.
Fighting down her embarrassment, Tang Ling pulled out a huge bouquet of roses from behind her back. “Shiyi, happy birthday!”
Tan Shiyi froze for a moment, surprised by the scene. She accepted the roses and held them close. “Thank you.”
Tang Ling scratched her head awkwardly. “I know flowers and candles are kind of cheesy, but I hope you don’t mind.”
Before Tan Shiyi could respond, Tang Ling grabbed her hand and led her to the dining table. “Come on, let’s have cake. I compared a bunch of bakeries—the buttercream sculpting from this one is the prettiest. You haven’t been eating properly these past few days, so please, have a taste.”
Tan Shiyi looked lost. “But, the candles.”
The table was completely covered with candles—there was no way to reach the cake.
“They’re just for atmosphere! I’ll blow them out.” Tang Ling quickly pulled out a chair for her to sit and hurried to extinguish the candles.
In her haste, she accidentally blew out the ones on the cake as well.
“Uh.” Tang Ling froze.
Tan Shiyi looked at her quietly. “Does that mean I can’t make a wish now?”
“I’ll relight them!” Tang Ling offered hastily.
Tan Shiyi stopped her, shaking her head gently. “No need. I don’t have any wishes left to make. Everything I want—I already have.”
Tang Ling’s face turned red. “Uh, well, I still have another gift for you!”
She rushed into the study, came back with her laptop, and presented it proudly. “Here—want to try it?”
Tan Shiyi blinked in curiosity and began to control the little pixel character on the screen.
The game’s title was simple and direct—“Finding You.”
The protagonist, a little pixelated Tang Ling, had to overcome all sorts of challenges to find Tan Shiyi.
The background music was a music-box version of the birthday song Tan Shiyi had once composed for Tang Ling.
Though there were some level-ups and monster fights, the story itself was gentle, heartwarming, and full of love.
After about half an hour, Tan Shiyi reached the ending: the two characters, Tang Ling and Tan Shiyi, living happily together.
As the ending theme played, a line appeared on the screen.
Shiyi, happy birthday. I’m so glad I met you.
Tears welled in Tan Shiyi’s eyes. She sniffled softly. “Thank you. I really love this gift.”
Then she stepped forward, wrapped her arms around Tang Ling, and pressed her face into her chest. “But my favorite gift is still you.”
“I love everything about you. Your abs—they make me feel safe. Your strength—yet how gentle you are with me. Your wound healed so well, thank goodness it didn’t scar. Your hairline, your jawline—they’re both beautiful. No matter what hairstyle you wear, you always look amazing.”
“Thank you for appearing in my life. I’m so happy that I was the one you found.”
Tang Ling held her tightly, her voice trembling slightly. “Shiyi, once your secondary differentiation is complete, can I mark you permanently?”
Tan Shiyi smiled. “As long as you want to, you can mark me as many times as you like.”
