- Chapter 9 - Do You Want To Become A Little Butterfly?
Wen Ruanqing’s little hand was pricked with an indwelling needle. She slowly raised her hand to touch the drawing in front of her. The colors of the picture were vibrant, and it was clearly discernible that it had been drawn by two people, yet it was so beautiful.
“Want.”
After whispering her desire, Wen Ruanqing held the drawing to her chest, but Wen Tingyin refused her: “You can’t, little sister. You’ll get your clothes all dirty.”
“Ah.”
Wen Ruanqing reached out her hand to grab it, but Wen Tingyin would not let her touch it. Her eyes filled with disappointment, and she looked toward Huo Yinli with quite a bit of difficulty: “Sister.”
She wanted that drawing.
Meeting Wen Ruanqing’s eyes, Huo Yinli’s heart softened, but she stood in a united front with Wen Tingyin: “You can’t grab it. Your hands will get all dirty, and you’ll turn into a little dirty-faced cat.”
Seeing that Huo Yinli would not give it to her either, Wen Ruanqing immediately puckered her lips, and tears pooled in her eyes in an instant, looking as if she would drop little pearls the very next second.
Seeing the situation, Feng Ye timely offered a solution: “In a little while, Mommy will find someone to bring a photo frame, and then we will place the drawing right by the bedside, okay?”
“That’s a great idea!”
Wen Tingyin nodded vigorously, clapped her hands, and said to Wen Ruanqing with a beaming smile: “In the future, big sister will draw a few more pictures for you. I hope my little sister can go out and play with me.”
Looking at Wen Tingyin’s expression, Wen Ruanqing could roughly understand Feng Ye’s words; her lips also curved into a smile, and her tears were slowly held back.
“Your body needs to get well quickly.”
Huo Yinli took hold of Wen Ruanqing’s hand, looked at the bracelet worn on Wen Ruanqing’s left wrist, and said softly: “I talked to my mom on the phone yesterday. This bracelet has the meaning of giving blessings. It will chase away all the illness on your body!”
Last night, her mother finally had time to talk to Huo Yinli on the phone, and Huo Yinli had also told her mother about the recent events. Upon hearing it, Mother Huo had said to her: “Xiao Li, that bracelet will bless that little sister with health.”
Huo Yinli believed everything her mother said.
“Huh, is there magic inside that bracelet too?”
Wen Tingyin looked over curiously: “That’s so magical.”
Huo Yinli nodded, her gaze earnest as she said: “There is.”
“Wow, your whole family are magicians!” Wen Tingyin was exceptionally supportive; she now completely believed that Huo Yinli knew magic, “That’s just too amazing.”
Wen Ruanqing also looked at the bracelet on her wrist. It was shiny and beautiful. She smiled along with Wen Tingyin, silently chanting the word ‘magic’ in her heart. Her lips moved, yet she had no way to articulate the two words.
Ma… gic.
Listening to the voices by her ear, Wen Ruanqing lay on the bed with the corners of her mouth turned upward, but her eyes slowly closed. Her eyes felt so sleepy, as if someone would not let her open them and kept saying to her: “Sleep, sleep.”
Sleep…
She was about to fall asleep.
Watching Wen Ruanqing’s eyelids fight against each other, Feng Ye extended a finger and made a “shh” sound: “Little sister is going to sleep. Once Auntie Wen finishes her phone call, it will be time for you to go home with Auntie Wen.”
“But I don’t want to leave.”
“That won’t do…”
“Alright then.”
Listening to the conversation between Wen Tingyin and Feng Ye, Huo Yinli carefully observed Wen Ruanqing with her gaze. It seemed Wen Ruanqing had grown thin again; how were her hands so small?
Slowly, she lowered her head and pressed her face against Wen Ruanqing’s. It was chilly and not comfortable at all. Huo Yinli pursed her lips slightly, and imitating the way her mother treated her, she whispered:
“Have a good dream.”
Wen Ruanqing slept for a few more hours. When she woke up, Huo Yinli and Wen Tingyin had already left, and the person guarding the bedside had changed to Wen Si.
“Is your little tummy hungry?”
Seeing her wake up, Wen Si immediately raised her hand to gently rub Wen Ruanqing’s stomach: “Shall Mother make some milk for you, okay?”
Wen Ruanqing was indeed hungry. She gripped one of Wen Si’s fingers and called out from her mouth: “Hungry.”
“Okay.”
Wen Si carefully withdrew her finger and quickly prepared one hundred and fifty milliliters of milk for Wen Ruanqing. In truth, this amount of food was considered quite small for a child of Wen Ruanqing’s age bracket, yet sometimes Wen Ruanqing could not even finish it.
“Do you want to sit up to drink?”
Wen Si originally wanted Wen Ruanqing to stay lying down, but the moment the milk bottle was handed over, Wen Ruanqing turned her head away, and subsequently saw two raised little hands. She smiled secretly: “Alright, we will sit up to drink.”
Wen Ruanqing finally sat up, leaning against the hospital bed while holding the milk bottle to drink. Her mental state was not great, but it was much better than the previous few days.
“Mommy.”
Wen Ruanqing grew tired of drinking and her attention drifted. Her gaze wandered around aimlessly until she saw a small head at the doorway. The door of the single-occupancy hospital room was not completely enclosed; this was the children’s ward area, and to make it convenient for children to find companions, a door would feature two small glass windows.
At this moment, she saw a girl squatting by the small window.
“Hmm?”
Wen Si looked along Wen Ruanqing’s gaze and discovered there was indeed a child at the door. Just as she stood up to walk over, that child ran away as if startled: “Hey.”
Wen Si did not manage to call out to stop the child. She turned around with an innocent look: “They ran away.”
“Huh?”
Wen Ruanqing poked her head out and searched all around repeatedly. Only after confirming she could not see the child did she sit up straight, not taking it to heart. Very quickly, her thoughts were pulled away by other matters—for instance, she did not like the cartoon Wen Si was playing and requested to change it, or she was thirsty and wanted to drink water…
The appearance of that child did not leave too many traces in Wen Ruanqing’s life, until the next day when Huo Yinli and Wen Tingyin came to visit, and that child appeared once again.
Holding the western doll that Wen Tingyin had brought her, Wen Ruanqing leaned against the headboard and coughed twice. Her expression was gaunt, yet her eyes carried the playful air of a child: “Hair.”
She grabbed the doll’s hair and then poked at the doll’s mouth, laughing out loud happily. Just as she raised her head to look at Wen Tingyin, out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of the girl standing at the door.
This time, Wen Si did not let the child leave.
“Little friend, are you looking to play with them?”
Wen Si’s attitude would become exceptionally gentle when dealing with well-behaved children. She opened the door and invited the girl inside: “Then come in and play together.”
The girl was named Cui Wangku, five years old this year. Yesterday when she saw Wen Ruanqing, she thought she was beautiful, so she ran over again today.
Cui Wangku wore oversized hospital scrubs and looked thin and small. Her hair was completely gone, and her expression was exceptionally constrained; even the gaze with which she looked at people carried caution.
She knew these people had money, so she shouldn’t have come in.
“Hello, Cui Wangku! My name is Wen Tingyin.”
Wen Tingyin gave up her own small stool and sat on the edge of the bed: “This is my little sister Wen Ruanqing, and this is my friend Huo Yinli.”
Cui Wangku nodded. She originally wanted to leave, but Feng Ye’s movements were faster, directly lifting her onto the chair.
“Thank you, Auntie.”
Cui Wangku’s voice was small. She sat uneasily looking at Wen Ruanqing, and after a few seconds of hesitation, she said: “Hello, little sister.”
Wen Ruanqing was also looking at her. A child’s gaze always carries innocence and curiosity; seeing her like this, she knew Cui Wangku was greeting her, so she called out: “Big sister.”
“Thank you.”
Cui Wangku smiled bashfully: “You are truly beautiful, and your two big sisters are beautiful too.”
“Then am I not beautiful?”
Feng Ye sat on the side joking. Looking at Cui Wangku, she casually asked: “Where is your mommy?”
Cui Wangku: “Mommy went to heaven. Right now my mother stays with me, but she has to go to work. She will accompany me once she gets off work.”
“Is your mommy a pilot?”
Huo Yinli spoke up to ask a question: “My mom said that pilots can fly planes and can fly in the sky.”
Cui Wangku shook her head: “No, Mother said Mommy won’t come back anymore.”
Hearing these words from Cui Wangku, Feng Ye and Wen Si exchanged a glance and gasped at the same time. Feng Ye softly diverted the topic: “Then have you eaten?”
“I’ve eaten, the nurse sister brought me food.”
Cui Wangku swung her feet, tugging at the corner of her clothes, her eyes unable to stop wandering around.
Shouldn’t she leave? Remaining here seemed inappropriate.
“Then what about your hair?”
Wen Tingyin asked; she genuinely did not understand this question: “Was it cut off?”
Cui Wangku nodded: “Because I have to do chemotherapy, so it was shaved off.”
“So cool.” Admiration flowed from the depths of Huo Yinli’s eyes, “It feels like it would be very convenient.”
Cui Wangku was somewhat surprised. She touched her own head and asked rather uncertainly: “Really?”
Wen Tingyin also nodded: “Really, it looks good this way. Right, little sister?”
The questioned Wen Ruanqing blinked her eyes slowly. She flashed a smile at Cui Wangku, giving an affirmative answer.
“Then what illness do you have?” Wen Tingyin continued to ask, like a ‘one hundred thousand whys’, full of confusion toward this world, “You are also so thin.”
Cui Wangku explained with a smile: “Leukemia. It probably can’t be cured. Maybe I will turn into a butterfly to go to heaven to accompany Mommy.”
Huo Yinli tilted her head, not quite understanding Cui Wangku’s meaning: “You will turn into a butterfly?”
“Yes, that’s what Mother said.” Cui Wangku nodded, “Mommy will be waiting for me in heaven. It’s not scary at all.”
“Wow, then that’s so amazing. In the sky I can only see white clouds. Will you be afraid then?”
Wen Tingyin took a piece of candy out from her small backpack: “For you.”
Receiving the candy, Cui Wangku denied it: “Not at all! I am very strong.”
Listening to Cui Wangku’s words, Huo Yinli pondered for a moment and finally arrived at a conclusion: Cui Wangku could turn into a little butterfly; maybe she was a butterfly spirit.
“Little sister.”
Looking at Wen Ruanqing, Huo Yinli asked in a small voice: “Will you be afraid?”
Hearing this, Feng Ye’s breath hitched. The innocent remarks of children seemed to carry no awareness of “death”—a heavy topic that made people sad.
“No.”
Wen Ruanqing shook her head lightly. She pressed her forehead against Huo Yinli’s. For some unknown reason, the memories of her past life were blurred—so blurred that she only knew she had to live, yet right now she could understand every single word from Cui Wangku. Perhaps she would also go to heaven.
To turn into a little butterfly.
“Ah, it’s bleeding.”
Wen Tingyin cried out in surprise and immediately pulled out a tissue to hand to Cui Wangku: “Quick, find a doctor!”
Cui Wangku was quite calm instead. She used the paper to block her nose, yet she felt extremely guilty for making Wen Ruanqing’s blanket dirty: “I’m sorry, Auntie, I made it dirty—”
A small hand was placed upon her soiled hand. Startled, she raised her head and directly met Wen Ruanqing’s eyes. The beautiful little sister was also looking at her, and she heard Wen Ruanqing say: “No…”
“Not afraid.”
