After Becoming Roommates with an Obnoxious Wealthy Heiress - Chapter51.2
The woman stepped forward and tucked the envelope into Qin Shuyue’s canvas bag. She glanced at the pattern on the bag and seemed surprised. “You still haven’t changed this bag after all these years? Is it to remind yourself every moment what a horrible woman I am?”
Qin Shuyue didn’t answer.
The woman’s smile was strained. She asked, “Was it really me who destroyed your family?” She shook her head and fell silent. Pointing to a nearby coffee shop, she added, “This isn’t the place to talk. Let’s go there. It’s quiet, and I’m sure you have questions.”
The woman walked ahead without waiting for an answer. As expected, Qin Shuyue followed at a distance. They sat by a window where they could see her father’s apartment building across the street.
“What do you want to say?” Qin Shuyue asked.
The woman gave a soft smile. When she smiled, she looked a lot like Qin Shuyue’s mother, which made the girl freeze for a moment.
“Actually, the person who destroyed that home wasn’t me.” The woman paused, resting her chin on her hand as she turned her gaze to Qin Shuyue. “It was you.”
Qin Shuyue was stunned. What do you mean, I destroyed the family? Everything she did was to save her mother to save her family. If it weren’t for this woman, her home wouldn’t have been torn apart.
Qin Shuyue leaned forward, her voice filled with confusion and anger. “What do you mean? How did I destroy the family? It was clearly…”
“Clearly I took advantage of the situation and got together with your father, right?”
Qin Shuyue was speechless. She hadn’t expected the woman to state the truth so bluntly. She gasped for air, unable to find words, and simply nodded, her face still flushed with anger.
“It was you,” the woman repeated, pointing at her. “You were the one who insisted on saving your mother. Did you ever consider how your father felt?”
“Should I thank him for wanting to give up on my mother?” Qin Shuyue couldn’t understand the woman’s logic.
The woman continued, “Your mother had the accident. If he spent the money to save her, she’d be a vegetable, needing care for the rest of her life. The money required would be endless, eventually dragging both you and your father down. If he hadn’t saved her, he could have used the insurance money and his high-paying job to go abroad for further studies. You could have stayed abroad or come back either way, wouldn’t your life be better than it is now?”
“But you were stubborn. You refused to let go, insisted on saving her, and used harsh words that broke your father’s heart. That’s why he decided to leave and be with me…”
“So you’re saying,” Qin Shuyue interrupted, “that he has no responsibility at all? That he was being a devoted father thinking of my future, and I was the one being ungrateful?”
The woman didn’t deny it. “Qin Shuyue, if you had made a different choice earlier, your father wouldn’t have left you.”
“Heh.” Qin Shuyue shook her head, her lips curling with disgust. “I don’t need a father like that. In this matter, he is a complete coward.”
“Believe what you want.” Seeing she couldn’t get through, the woman gave up. “You need to face reality. There’s no going back.”
The woman reached into her bag and pulled out an agreement. “Your father has done quite well for himself over the years and has started a company. I need you to sign this waiver of inheritance. You will leave everything to your younger brother.”
“If your brain is sick, go to a hospital. I’m not a neurologist,” Qin Shuyue snapped. She realized now why this woman had “kindly” brought her money. It was all a trap. She had almost believed the woman was being sincere.
The woman ignored the insult and pulled out a check. “Five million. If you sign this, I’ll give you five million yuan. You can use it to save your mother or throw it to the wind, it’s up to you.”
Qin Shuyue grabbed the red envelope from her bag and threw it back in the woman’s face. She stood up, wanting to pour the water from the table over her, but she restrained herself. Even if others lacked class, she had to remain rational.
“I didn’t know my dad was so capable. Where did he get the startup capital for a company?” Qin Shuyue’s anger flared as the realization hit her. “He used my mother’s compensation money as capital, didn’t he?”
Compared to the trembling, furious Qin Shuyue, the woman remained calm. Realizing a deal wouldn’t happen today, she put the check and agreement away but left the red envelope on the table. She stood up to face Qin Shuyue.
“Even with that 500,000, your mother can’t be saved. It’s better to use that money to let the living thrive, isn’t it?”
Before leaving, she tucked the envelope back into Qin Shuyue’s pocket. A small smile appeared on her face one that shared a resemblance with her mother but lacked any softness, filled instead with calculation.
“My mother’s money wasn’t enough. I put in another 800,000 for your father’s business. I hold 60% of the shares; the other 35% is with other investors. Your father is just a figurehead.”
Her message was clear: give up hope of getting anything from her father.
“Take the money, Qin Shuyue,” the woman sighed. “Your mother’s hospital bill is due, isn’t it? You’re ten days behind. How much longer can you stall? Won’t the hospital force her out because of the lack of funds? Think of this 50,000 as a gift for your mother.”
She smiled gently, unaffected by the girl’s rage. “Young lady, don’t be so hot-tempered. Sometimes you have to learn to bow your head.”
With that, she turned and walked away on her high heels. Qin Shuyue’s hands dropped limply to her sides. She felt like a wilted plant, her heart filled with a hollow, powerless anger.
50,000 yuan. Yes, she needed it desperately. It could save her from this crisis. But was she really going to use this woman’s money to save her mother? Her mother would be furious if she knew.
Clenching her fists, she took a bus to the restaurant. Although she felt humiliated asking for an advance, what other choice did she have? She would rather beg for her wages than spend a single cent of that woman’s money.
It was rush hour, and the restaurant was packed. The boss, Yuan Mei, was busy but noticed Qin Shuyue at the door. “Oh? Why are you here? Isn’t today your day off?”
Qin Shuyue forced a smile. “Boss Yuan…”
Yuan Mei saw the look on her face and knew something was wrong. “Go to the cashier’s desk. I’ll be over once I’m done here.”
Qin Shuyue gave her a grateful look. She sat on the small stool behind the counter, spinning nervously. She tried to rehearse what to say, but Yuan Mei was already there.
“What is it? Is something wrong?”
“Boss Yuan…” Qin Shuyue looked miserable and conflicted.
Yuan Mei didn’t understand why the girl was blinking at her so strangely. She laughed. “You’re so cute… if you weren’t off today, I’d think you messed up the books and were feeling guilty!”
The joke helped ease the tension. Qin Shuyue took a breath. “Boss Yuan, I… I wanted to ask… if I could…”
“An advance on your salary?”
Yuan Mei thought it was some massive problem given the girl’s expression. “Of course. How much do you need? A month’s worth? Half a month?”
“700.”
Qin Shuyue didn’t ask for much. Although Yuan Mei was confused by the small amount, she didn’t pry and transferred the money immediately.
“I sent you 1,000. Buy yourself something good to eat. Consider the extra 300 a gift, it’s not on the books.”
Before Qin Shuyue could refuse, Yuan Mei was already back to work. She looked down at her phone as a message arrived: 1,000 yuan received.
She didn’t waste a second and headed straight for the hospital.
In the Zongcheng Bar.
The lighting was sultry and mysterious, with purple and red beams swaying across the room. On the distant stage, performers were in full swing. Gao Yin was laughing and chatting with people nearby, occasionally glancing at the beautiful figures on stage.
Zhu Lingyi, however, sat alone on another sofa, drinking heavily. Gao Yin noticed and nudged Xu Lian, who was sitting next to him. Even at a bar, Xu Lian was holding a laptop, analyzing data.
Gao Yin was speechless. “Why did you even come if you’re just going to do that?”
Xu Lian pushed up his glasses, his eyes lingering on a green data point. “My parents told me to keep a close eye on Zhu Lingyi.”
Gao Yin rolled his eyes. “Is this how they meant for you to follow her? Whatever.” He looked over at Zhu Lingyi. “The Boss is over there drinking her troubles away.”
Xu Lian looked over but didn’t see anything unusual. “She’s just drinking. What’s the problem?”
“She’s drinking alone and moodily,” Gao Yin explained to the non-drinker. “She’s clearly unhappy. Something’s on her mind.”
Xu Lian looked again. “Is she? She looks like she’s just having a normal drink.”
Gao Yin nudged him again. “Ugh, you don’t get it. Go ask her what’s up.”
“Me?” Xu Lian pointed to himself.
“Yeah! Who else? I’m watching the show! You’re the one doing nothing, so go ask and come back and tell me!”
