- Chapter 54.1 - Unable to Help Worrying About Her
Emotions Swayed by You
Ten percent—no, one hundred percent something was wrong.
That lunatic Song Jiajia…
There was no telling what kind of madness she would resort to just to drive her away.
Qin Shuyue lowered her gaze, looking at the mess on her plate.
She closed her eyes briefly, but eventually picked up her chopsticks to dig out the green vegetables stuck inside. She meticulously separated the mashed rice and vegetable bits grain by grain, swallowing them whole.
Calculating the time, it was about time for her to head to her job at the Hanfu studio.
She pedaled a shared bicycle swiftly through the narrow alleys, then braked sharply in front of a low, quaint ancient building, coming to a steady stop before the shop.
The shop’s name was Jingtian Main Hall.
Qin Shuyue looked up at the plaque and checked her phone.
11:50 AM. She was more than forty minutes early.
The boss, encountering such a proactive employee for the first time, felt surprised, assuming it was just a passing whim of a young girl new to society.
But Qin Shuyue remained unwavering throughout the National Day holiday, arriving nearly forty minutes early every single day. The boss became somewhat wary. “Qin Shuyue, you don’t need to come this early every day. Just show up during your scheduled working hours. Tell you what, go rest at the front desk or in the main hall at the back for a while.”
Qin Shuyue pursed her lips, seemingly understanding the boss’s underlying meaning the moment he spoke. She offered a small smile. “Boss, I’m used to being early. My wages can still be calculated based on five hours.”
Hearing this acted like a reassuring pill for the boss. Regardless of how early Qin Shuyue arrived from then on, the boss never asked another question.
And the boss truly did appreciate this young girl from the bottom of his heart.
She looked a bit dazed and simple-minded, and she didn’t talk much, but she worked efficiently.
If she weren’t a student, the boss might have actually kept her on as a full-time employee.
The sun gradually dipped, and the five-plus hours quickly neared their end.
As soon as it hit 5:30 PM, the shifts changed. Qin Shuyue changed out of her work uniform and grabbed her canvas bag to rush to her next job.
But today, the boss called out to stop her.
Qin Shuyue walked toward the direction of the boss’s waving hand with a face full of confusion.
She asked, “Boss? Do you need me to work overtime or…?”
The boss shook his head, addressing Qin Shuyue with the same attitude he used for countless other part-timers. “Starting from tomorrow, you don’t need to come anymore.”
Qin Shuyue froze for a moment, but she understood instantly. She didn’t ask further; she simply lowered her head and nodded.
The boss, however, was astonished.
In the past, part-time workers would always pester him for a reason, but this one was different.
He took the initiative to ask, “Why don’t you ask me why?”
Qin Shuyue shook her head. “Asking won’t change the outcome. Since I have to leave anyway, there’s no point in asking.”
She tugged at the corners of her mouth and finally bid the boss goodbye. “I’m out of time. I have to rush to the restaurant.”
With that, she turned quickly, carrying her canvas bag as she ran toward the shared bicycle parked in a hidden corner.
She scanned the code rapidly, straddled the seat with practiced movements, turned the bike around, and sped off.
The boss watched the direction of her departure, clicking his tongue. “As expected of a student from Xingxi University.”
Not only desperate in studies, but desperate in work as well.
The boss shook his head and sighed.
He was long past the age of having such passionate vitality.
Qin Shuyue was as busy as an ant on a hot pan, her feet never touching the ground as she whirled around.
She barely managed to reach the restaurant by 6:00 PM. Without a moment of rest and without even eating dinner she sat down in front of the computer and began organizing data.
From being unfamiliar at the start, taking nearly an hour to calculate one set of data, she could now do it in ten minutes. She was proficient, quickly calculating the data, costs, purchase prices, and profits for the past three months.
When she had a free moment, she would diligently help Yuan Mei manage the shop.
Busy until eleven o’clock, she hurriedly shut down the computer, said goodbye to Yuan Mei, and disappeared in a flash on her shared bicycle.
Yuan Mei had wanted to drive her back to school like last time, but Qin Shuyue had been particularly rushed these days. The moment work ended, in the time it took Yuan Mei to turn around, Qin Shuyue would already be three miles away.
Consequently, Yuan Mei would always send her messages with deep concern.
“Remember to message me when you get to the dormitory.”
Twenty minutes passed with no reply.
Yuan Mei’s heart couldn’t help but tighten. “Qin Shuyue, have you reached the dorm?”
She asked again.
Then, the person on the other side would always send a message promptly at 11:30 PM.
“I’ve arrived. Thank you for your concern, Boss Yuan.”
And then…
There would be no further follow-up.
Today, however, was different.
Usually, at eleven at night, the streets were deserted. But today, the traffic was backed up in a massive gridlock, impenetrable.
Even Qin Shuyue, riding a nimble bicycle that could usually weave like a little snake between various e-bikes and cars, was forced to hit the brakes.
Beep! Beep! Beep!
The cars were packed densely, one biting the tail of another, following closely for fear that another vehicle might cut in front of them.
The National Day holiday was over, and everyone was in a hurry to return home for work.
This proved difficult for Qin Shuyue.
Anxiously, she pulled out her phone to check the time.
11:20 PM.
She closed her eyes.
She was definitely not going to make it.
Looking out at the non-motorized lane that was clogged beyond repair, her gaze drifted toward the road on the right.
A sidewalk, with a bumpy tactile paving strip in the middle.
A flash of inspiration struck Qin Shuyue, and she immediately decided to lift her bike onto the sidewalk.
The biggest difference between an e-bike and a bicycle wasn’t just that one was electric and one was manual.
More importantly, a bicycle was much lighter than an e-bike.
Thus, amidst the rows of crowded e-bikes, Qin Shuyue stood out as she hoisted her bicycle onto the sidewalk and began pedaling beautifully.
It made everyone else feel quite frustrated.
After all, some people could lift a bicycle with one hand, but no one could hoist an e-bike or a car with two.
Under the envious or speechless gazes of the crowd, the bell on Qin Shuyue’s bicycle rang out a crisp ting-a-ling. Her feet pedaled up and down, and her slender silhouette vanished into the distance.
But before she could feel happy for more than a few minutes, there was a loud bang. Qin Shuyue was knocked to the ground by a black sedan rushing out from a turn.
The shared bicycle flew away. Qin Shuyue slammed into the front of the car, her body rolling several times over the long hood, buffering for a few seconds before she crashed onto the ground.
Her limbs felt numb at first, and then a heart-piercing, bone-deep pain surged up like a rising tide.
Qin Shuyue lay on the ground, unable to move. The man sitting in the driver’s seat of the black sedan rolled down the window impatiently, squinting his eyes and poking his head out. He didn’t even open the car door, let alone get out to check the situation.
Afterward, as if he didn’t even know he had hit someone, he shifted the car, stomped on the accelerator, and roared away.
Qin Shuyue was wearing long sleeves and long pants, but she was still injured. There were no bloodstains beneath her, only several abrasions that had dragged bloody marks across the ground.
It didn’t look terrifying, but Qin Shuyue lay on the ground for a long time without moving.
“Little President Zhu, do you think Miss Qin will be back before 11:30?”
Standing beside her was Yu Xian, dressed in a white lab coat, with a medical kit habitually slung across her body.
Zhu Lingyi sat on the sofa, clutching a laptop, her slender fingers tapping away at the keyboard.
She wasn’t certain in her heart either.
After all, Qin Shuyue hadn’t returned to the dormitory for the entire National Day holiday, and Zhu Lingyi was also feeling uneasy.
She steadily pushed up her glasses. “Stop pacing around.”
It was making it impossible for her to concentrate.
Yu Xian, on the other hand, was quite anxious.
She had checked the medicine carefully; Qin Shuyue had barely taken any of it.
With anemia plus low blood sugar, without nutritional supplements or medication, Qin Shuyue’s body was bound to run into major trouble sooner or later!
As a doctor, regardless of who the patient was, as long as they were under her care, she naturally had to be dedicated and responsible.
The business card she had handed to Qin Shuyue previously had also received no response.
Yu Xian shot a tentative glance at Zhu Lingyi.
Seeing that she looked normal and seemingly unaware of the situation, Yu Xian’s heart remained lodged in her throat.
Time slipped away second by second. The second hand, which usually moved like a snail, felt like it was on an accelerator; in the blink of an eye, it was already 11:50 PM.
Jiang Feiwan had finished organizing everything in Zhu Lingyi’s bedroom. She had heated the plain milk over and over again, yet Zhu Lingyi showed no sign of drinking it and going to bed. Instead, she remained on the downstairs sofa, fingers clattering on the keyboard, busy with goodness-knows-what.
Jiang Feiwan stood on the second floor, holding a cup of milk.
She looked down, and Yu Xian happened to look up. Their eyes met for a moment before they both awkwardly turned their heads away.
Jiang Feiwan hadn’t forgotten the events of that night…
And seeing that she was still brooding over it, Yu Xian felt embarrassed herself.
A wordless silence spread between the two, and the entire dormitory was filled with an atmosphere so quiet it was almost eerie.
Time soon reached 12:30 AM.
Jiang Feiwan got anxious.
She hurried down to the first floor, ignoring any awkwardness, and pulled Yu Xian quietly to the side, whispering in her ear, “Hey, what’s going on? Why isn’t Little President Zhu sleeping yet? Usually, she’d be asleep by this time.”
Yu Xian shrugged, her face showing a troubled expression. “This… I, how should I know? Aren’t you Little President Zhu’s life assistant? If even you don’t know, how would I?”
“Aren’t you a doctor?”
Yu Xian was stunned for a moment and immediately retorted, “I’m a doctor, not a prophet! Whether your Little President Zhu sleeps or not, or when she sleeps, how would I know? If her health fails because of staying up late and she comes for a consultation, then it’s appropriate to ask me!”
Yu Xian was truly speechless toward such amateurs.
It was as if being a doctor was the most perfect profession in the world—capable of treating illnesses above and foretelling fate below.
Simply an irreproachable hexagonal warrior.
The two talked in low voices on the side, and unknowingly, the time reached 1:00 AM.
Seeing it getting later and later with no movement from Zhu Lingyi while the keyboard continued to clatter away, Jiang Feiwan found it heart-wrenching. She was practically afraid the keyboard would be smashed to pieces by Zhu Lingyi.
She plucked up her courage and exchanged a look with Yu Xian.
Yu Xian, however, had already looked away, refusing to meet her eyes.
She wore a look of total detachment, as if it had nothing to do with her.
Her whole face screamed, “Not my department.”
Jiang Feiwan took a deep breath and nudged her way toward Zhu Lingyi’s side, asking softly, “Little President Zhu… it’s already, it’s already 1:30 AM…”
Zhu Lingyi’s expression remained unchanged.
No frowning, no agitation, and certainly no impatience.
Very calm, very cool, her slender phoenix eyes containing a trace of indiscernible coldness. She looked up, sweeping a feather-light glance over Jiang Feiwan, before looking back down at the laptop screen.
But Jiang Feiwan nearly collapsed.
Please.
I beg my superior to scold me harshly!
She’d rather be scolded than be looked at with that kind of gaze!
It would make her wildly overthink what kind of heaven-defying mistake she had committed! Ugh!
Jiang Feiwan looked back, only to see Yu Xian leisurely puckering her lips and whistling softly, her face turned away and her hands tucked into the pockets of her lab coat.
Her face was written with “I don’t know, don’t look at me, I wouldn’t know even if you did.”
Jiang Feiwan wanted to cry but had no tears.
What on earth was the boss bottling up!
This kind of boss is so scary… ugh!
“Welcome home…”
Just as the atmosphere was reaching a breaking point, the sound of the door unlocking echoed from outside.
Jiang Feiwan’s gaze flew to the door almost instantly.
Instinct told her that this person could definitely save her!
She immediately rushed forward.
