- Chapter 36 - Wishful Thinking
They will destroy your mother and you…
“I am talking to you.” Zhu Lingyi’s gaze fixed directly upon the two figures distorted in the elevator mirrors.
Inside the reflection, Qin Shuyue kept her eyes glued to the tips of her toes, seemingly not hearing a word Zhu Lingyi said.
“Look at me,” Zhu Lingyi commanded coldly.
With a ding, the elevator signaled its arrival.
“Sixth floor reached. Please”
Before the announcement could finish, Qin Shuyue ignored Zhu Lingyi and stepped out of the elevator. However, just as her hand touched the doorknob, the air behind her was suddenly displaced. A body carrying physical warmth pressed against her thin back, and the scent of jasmine flooded the air.
With every breath Qin Shuyue took, the delicate fragrance of jasmine swirled around her nose. It was clearly a noble and elegant scent, yet in her nostrils, it smelled only of something nauseating.
“What do you want?” Qin Shuyue asked icily.
Zhu Lingyi raised an eyebrow. Is this her true self? This was far more interesting than attending those parties hosted by Gao Yin and her crowd.
“What do I want?”
Zhu Lingyi tilted her head, slowly glancing toward the security camera mounted in the corner. She then turned back, leaning inch by inch toward Qin Shuyue’s ear, exhaling a gentle, faint breath.
“I don’t like it when you aren’t obedient.”
Qin Shuyue closed her eyes. She had noticed Zhu Lingyi’s glance at the camera. Has she thought of a new way to torment me? Does she want to leak these videos to the outside world to make me lose all face again?
She pressed down on the handle, but the door that usually opened with ease wouldn’t budge today. Stunned, Qin Shuyue tried a few more times to no avail. Her hand on the handle began to tremble.
“What exactly do you want from me?!” Qin Shuyue hissed, her suppressed emotions reaching a boiling point.
But the moment Zhu Lingyi’s fingers touched Qin Shuyue’s palm, the icy coldness of her fingertips instantly extinguished the spark of heat rising in Qin Shuyue’s heart.
“You’re shaking.”
Zhu Lingyi gripped Qin Shuyue’s hand which had wasted away until it was nearly nothing but bone—and stared at it for a long time. She frowned briefly before her expression smoothed out again.
Looking down, Zhu Lingyi saw Qin Shuyue huddled in her embrace, shivering. She released her grip and moved her body away, ending the confinement against the door.
Zhu Lingyi placed her hand over Qin Shuyue’s, flipped open a small cover with her thumb, and pressed down. With a click, the door that Qin Shuyue had struggled to open swung wide. Zhu Lingyi walked inside effortlessly.
She looked back at the lingering figure. “I’m closing the door.”
Only then did Qin Shuyue step into the room.
“Before the door didn’t have a code,” Qin Shuyue said. It was the second time she had proactively spoken to Zhu Lingyi since moving into the dorm, aside from their first greeting.
However, Zhu Lingyi paid her back in kind, remaining silent. She flopped onto the sofa, spreading her arms across the backrest and narrowing her eyes.
“I’m thirsty,” Zhu Lingyi remarked.
Qin Shuyue clenched her fists and then relaxed them. She turned into the kitchen, poured a glass of water, and carefully brought it to Zhu Lingyi’s lips. Zhu Lingyi made no move to take it.
She issued another command: “Feed me.”
Qin Shuyue’s hand shook, the water nearly spilling onto Zhu Lingyi’s clothes.
Zhu Lingyi reminded her coldly, “If a single drop spills, you’re sleeping outside tonight.”
“I’ll feed you. In exchange, you have to tell me the door code.”
Zhu Lingyi’s eyes narrowed. She reached out and grabbed Qin Shuyue’s jaw, forcing her to look up. The water in the cup wavered precariously.
“You are in no position to negotiate with me. You only need to do exactly as I say. Do you understand?”
Qin Shuyue bit her lower lip so hard it looked ready to bleed. Zhu Lingyi’s other hand gently brushed against that crimson lip, prying her teeth away.
“Stop biting.”
Zhu Lingyi leaned back again, her gaze locked on the other girl. “There’s nothing to hesitate about. It’s not like I’m asking you to do anything else, right?”
Qin Shuyue’s right hand was trembling. She tried her best to control the shaking as she slowly brought the glass to Zhu Lingyi’s full, sensual lips. As the glass tilted and Zhu Lingyi’s lips parted, the warm water rolled over her soft tongue and down her throat.
Because it was such an intimate act, and because she was terrified of spilling water on Zhu Lingyi, Qin Shuyue had no choice but to scoot closer on the sofa. Unknowingly, the physical distance between them vanished until they were nearly pressed together.
Qin Shuyue didn’t realize how close they were until her eyes met Zhu Lingyi’s naked, searching gaze. She suddenly realized the only thing between them was a glass of water.
“Ah!”
Qin Shuyue gasped and scrambled to sit upright, clutching the glass tightly, her head bowed. If one looked closely, they could see her small ears had turned bright red.
The corner of Zhu Lingyi’s mouth twitched upward a tiny smile she didn’t even notice herself.
She stood up, took the glass from Qin Shuyue’s hand, and naturally led her to the door. Zhu Lingyi pressed a few buttons, and after a successful unlock sound, she took one of Qin Shuyue’s fingers and pressed it into the rough, recessed scanner.
“Just follow the voice prompts,” Zhu Lingyi said lazily, leaning against the doorframe.
Soon, Qin Shuyue finished registering her fingerprint.
“Not too stupid,” Zhu Lingyi muttered under her breath.
It was unclear if Qin Shuyue heard it, but she froze for a moment before returning to her nonchalant facade.
“That’s enough.”
Zhu Lingyi waved her off and stretched as she walked further into the room. Her shirt lifted with the movement, offering a fleeting glimpse of her waistline. Qin Shuyue silently turned and closed the door. She took her bag upstairs, but a moment later, she came rushing back down.
“Hey, you”
Before Zhu Lingyi could react, the door slammed. Qin Shuyue had vanished again.
“Young Miss Zhu, you…” the assistant started to ask.
Zhu Lingyi interrupted, “We still don’t have a suitable candidate for the catering manager. Dinner today will be the same as before. Also, keep a constant eye on the surveillance. If anything looks wrong, tell me immediately.”
The assistant’s expression sharpened. “Yes, ma’am.”
“Did you find out who installed the cameras?”
Zhu Lingyi never needed to do the legwork herself; a simple order was enough for others to investigate everything. The assistant nodded and gestured forward. “Miss Zhu, please follow me.”
In the study, looking at the surveillance footage on the computer screen, Zhu Lingyi’s expression turned grim. The assistant stood by, trembling.
“Are you sure it’s her?” Zhu Lingyi asked.
The assistant nodded firmly. “No one else went near the cameras. She was very discreet no fingerprints, no biological traces. I wasn’t even sure who it was at first.”
But Zhu Lingyi recognized the silhouette instantly.
“Young Miss, what do you plan to do next?”
Zhu Lingyi crossed her legs and folded her arms, squinting at the screen.
“Save it for now. And then.” Qin Shuyue’s face flashed through her mind. She smiled thinly. “Do nothing.”
Qin Shuyue, will you beg me to delete the things that could ruin you? I’ll wait and see.
The assistant then handed her a blue-covered file. Zhu Lingyi flipped through a few pages. “The school holds these same boring, monotonous activities every year. No creativity. Tedious.”
She tossed the file onto the desk. “Have the legal team check for issues, then pass it through the normal channels for my signature and seal.”
“Yes,” the assistant replied, then paused. “I noticed a question… are we still keeping the post-match speech for the first-place winner this year?”
Zhu Lingyi looked up. The assistant didn’t understand why she was asking. “Yes. Since you arrived, the school always invites you and the season champion to speak on stage.”
Zhu Lingyi snorted. “That is as it should be. You may go.”
As the assistant turned to leave, Zhu Lingyi asked, “Any movement… from the old estate?”
The assistant thought for a moment. “The same as before. That group is clamoring…” She hesitated.
“Speak,” Zhu Lingyi commanded.
“They say if you don’t relinquish power, they will… they will destroy the industries your mother and you have built over the years.”
“Wishful thinking,” Zhu Lingyi sneered. “Keep watching them.”
“Understood, Young Miss.”
As the final bell rang, Qin Shuyue didn’t return to the dorm. Instead, she headed toward the school gates, where she was spotted by Liang Qi and Song Jiajia.
“Is that Qin Shuyue?” Liang Qi asked, unsure.
Song Jiajia recognized the tattered pink floral canvas bag immediately. “No one else would carry a bag with faded colors and peeling print except her.”
Liang Qi laughed, his eyes malicious. “Man… her family must be so poor they can’t even put food on the table.”
Song Jiajia sneered. “Why else would she use such trampy methods to get close to Miss Zhu?”
They exchanged dark looks and smirked.
“Come on,” Song Jiajia ordered. “Let’s follow her and see.”
