- Chapter 2 - The Other Mother -To Give Birth to This Cat, or Not
After giving the police her address, Lan Ye closed the call interface on her children’s smart watch and switched to the camera, aiming it directly at the doctor and nurse in front of her.
On the tiny screen, two faces were frozen in bewilderment.
The doctor hesitated, “Miss… is there some kind of misunderstanding?”
How did a police report happen so suddenly? Thinking back to what she had just heard, this person telling the police there was a fraud ring operating in the hospital, the doctor glanced at the nurse. Who’s a fraud? There are only three people in this room.
Looking at the dazed doctor who seemed to be playing dumb, Lan Ye snorted. She recalled a classic line from TV that felt particularly appropriate for the moment.
“You have the right to remain silent, but everything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law!”
As she finished the sentence, Lan Ye felt her own image grow a bit more heroic.
The doctor’s mouth twitched. She suspected she had encountered a case of “Chunibyo” a common “delusional” affliction among human youths. She exchanged a look with the nurse, whose expression was equally complicated.
The nurse silently nodded and pressed the one touch silent alarm in her pocket.
The alarm was directly linked to the Central Police Station next door. Medical harassment and hospital violence had been increasingly frequent lately, with ever changing tactics. Fortunately, the person in front of them was a human, no matter how much of a scene she caused, she was easier to handle than a Beastman.
Worrying that Lan Ye might have a weapon, the doctor and nurse quietly slid their chairs back, staying alert while waiting for the police to arrive.
Lan Ye did the same. To prevent them from escaping, she dragged her chair over to block the door. She stopped talking to the two “scammers.” Having attended community anti-fraud lectures, she knew the first step was to call the police and avoid getting sucked into the scammers’ twisted logic.
Sitting down, Lan Ye scrutinized the “doctor” and “nurse.” They looked professional, complete with white coats and name tags.
They’ve certainly dressed the part. It’s just their brains that have issues…
Lan Ye looked down at the ultrasound report in her hand, which the “scammer doctor” had handed her. On it was a very clear image of a tiny kitten’s head.
Recalling the doctor’s words, Lan Ye felt like laughing out of pure anger again.
She actually said I was pregnant! And with a cat!
If you’re going to run a scam, at least make it believable. Humans giving birth to cats? Ridiculous!
Lan Ye glared at the two suspects with a warning look: “Neither of you is getting away.”
Central Police Station
Si Qing had a solemn expression as she quickly donned her duty gear.
She hadn’t expected to catch a case on her very first day at the Central Police Station. Someone was reporting a fraud at the hospital. Simultaneously, the station received a medical disturbance alarm from the Central Hospital, located in the exact same department as the fraud report.
Fraud and hospital violence? Si Qing packed her gear and hopped into the police car with her colleagues, sirens wailing as they sped toward the hospital.
Criminal behavior like this could not be tolerated.
Remembering that Ju Rin was also at the Central Hospital, Si Qing dialed her number as soon as she got in the car. It wasn’t that she was worried about the Princess getting hurt. Ju Rin was a Super S-Rank Beastman, few could harm her. She was worried that if a serious conflict broke out and reporters arrived, they might accidentally photograph Ju Rin and expose her whereabouts.
Although she constantly urged the Princess to return to the palace, that was mostly talk. As Ju Rin’s guard and childhood friend, she secretly hoped Ju Rin could be happy.
The call went through until it timed out, but no one picked up.
What is she doing, not answering the phone… Seeing they were almost at the hospital, Si Qing quickly sent a text.
Central Hospital, 11th Floor, Feline General Department
After flipping through a thick stack of test results, the doctor looked at the patient on the hypnosis chair, who had failed to be hypnotized three times. The doctor looked hesitant.
“Miss, there is nothing wrong with your mental power.”
The doctor thought to herself. In fact, it’s not just fine, it’s incredibly powerful. Even the hospital’s strongest hypnotic injections were useless. Generally, this only happened with Super S-Rank Beastmen, yet this patient’s file listed her as S-Rank. This was rare.
“As for the recurring dream you’ve had every night for a month… perhaps it’s related to the content. Would you mind describing the dream?”
Ju Rin remained silent, looking at the doctor. How to describe it…
She had never had such fragmented memories before, to the point where she suspected her mental stability was compromised.
In the dream… no, it wasn’t a dream.
That night, she clearly felt her mental power lose control. The air became thin, a dangerous pink mist spread, and as the loss of control deepened and the color darkened, she feared she and the other human would die from lack of oxygen.
She heard the human crying out, pleading for mercy, but the more they did, the more her mental power spiraled.
It was unprecedented. Even during a Frenzy Period (Estrous Cycle).
Ju Rin looked down at her left hand. She remembered using it to pin down the struggling human. The human’s shoulder-length hair had brushed against the back of her hand, it was itchy.
So itchy she wanted to bite. And she did…
Ju Rin curled her fingers and touched the corner of her lips. In the dreams that followed, she woke up startled every time she leaned in to bite. Each time she woke, her mental power would experience a brief surge. It was especially prominent this morning.
She looked at the doctor, waiting for a diagnosis.
The doctor’s expression was quite colorful. The Beastman in front of her had entered the clinic looking grim as if the world were ending, only for it to turn out that she had been having sex dreams for a month.
The doctor composed herself, trying to remain professional: “Have you never had this behavior before?”
Ju Rin: “Which kind?”
Doctor: “Sexual intercourse.”
Ju Rin’s eyebrows shot up. She stared at the doctor in silence.
Sometimes silence is an answer. The doctor was surprised; the file showed this Beastman had been sexually mature for seven years.
“During previous Frenzy Periods, did you use medication to control it?”
Ju Rin shook her head. She rarely used meds. Her mental power was always stable, and she could self-regulate during the cycle without intervention.
A flash of realization hit the doctor. She knew the problem.
“Don’t worry, you’re fine. What you’re describing is normal. You were just a bit too excited during your first sexual experience during a Frenzy Period. Many people have recurring dreams after their first time. And those feelings of ‘suffocation’ and ‘loss of control’? Don’t worry, you weren’t dying. That was just an orgasm. It’s no big deal.”
The doctor spoke nonchalantly. People with poor physiological knowledge or those who had only studied theory without practice, often thought they were dying when reality didn’t match the textbook. Usually, though, these were just-matured young Beastmen.
The doctor flipped to the bottom of the registration form. The last Frenzy Period was on the 1st today was the 31st. Generally, a Beastman’s cycle is 30 days, much like a human menstrual cycle, very regular. The Beastman in front of her was about to enter a new round.
“Do you need me to prescribe some suppressants? Do you have a partner?”
Ever since the doctor described those “uncontrollable feelings” as an orgasm, Ju Rin’s eyes had been trembling.
How… with a human?
The Royal Family had physiology classes. She remembered the head lecturer saying that it was very difficult for Beastmen to have such experiences with humans…
How could I…?
In her shock, she didn’t hear the doctor’s question.
Seeing her silence, the doctor assumed she didn’t have a partner, otherwise, why have sex dreams every day? As for that “human” she mentioned, it was likely just a “one day use” bed partner, a popular trend among young Beastmen these days.
Young Beastmen didn’t want to get married anymore, following the old path of human history. The number of kittens born in the hospital this year was pitifully low.
Oh, the doctor remembered something.
“If you don’t plan on having kittens, remember to use contraception.”
Although it’s hard for a human to get pregnant by a Beastman, there is still a probability. Furthermore, if a human and a Beastman have a child, there’s a high chance it will be a “common kitten” a cat without mental power that cannot evolve into a Beastman. Many Beastmen abandon them because of this, leading to many stray cats.
Thinking of this, the doctor felt that today’s young Beastmen were increasingly irresponsible. She looked at the woman in front of her, hoping she was one of the responsible ones.
Ju Rin snapped back to reality. Hearing those words, her brow furrowed deeply.
Central Hospital, Physical Examination Department, Reception Room 5
Si Qing looked at the oddly dressed human before her.
Her face looked twenty at most, but she was wearing an earth-yellow dress that looked like it belonged to a fifty-year-old. She wore a black bucket hat that didn’t match at all, hiding all her hair. Her round face featured large eyes currently filled with blatant confusion.
Lan Ye finished explaining everything. Seeing the police officer not moving, she wondered what the hold-up was. “Officer, the scammers are right here. Aren’t you going to arrest them?”
Si Qing snapped out of her thoughts. Arrest them? She looked back at the doctor and nurse, who looked completely innocent. The nurse had already whispered to Si Qing that she was the one who pressed the alarm, the “medical disturber” was actually the person reporting the crime.
Si Qing looked back at Lan Ye. “Miss, is it possible there’s a misunderstanding?”
“Misunderstanding?” Lan Ye’s thick brows shot up. “What’s there to misunderstand? They said I’m pregnant! With a cat!”
Lan Ye looked Si Qing dead in the eye: “Can a human give birth to a cat?”
“They can’t?” Si Qing was genuinely baffled by the question. Did this person never receive basic physiological education?
“A human and a human can’t have a kitten, but a human and a Beastman can.”
Si Qing looked behind her. The doctor and nurse nodded in unison.
See? Everyone knows this. Confirming it was common knowledge, Si Qing looked back at Lan Ye.
“By the way, where is your Beastman?”
The doctor had just reviewed Lan Ye’s exam results, she was a 21-year-old human. Since she was a human and carrying a kitten, the other half had to be a Beastman.
“Thin-man?” (Note: In Chinese, “Beastman” shouren and “Thin person” shouren are homophones).
This was the second time today Lan Ye had heard this word. She didn’t understand, why could humans and “thin people” give birth to cats? Then what did humans and fat people give birth to? Dogs?
Is this police officer joking with me…
Lan Ye looked at the officer warily, wondering if she had stumbled into a “scam within a scam.”
Si Qing had no idea Lan Ye suspected her of being a fraud. She scanned the report again, but couldn’t find any information on the other Beastman. “Your partner, the kitten’s other mother, didn’t she come to the hospital?”
Lan Ye tilted her head, her brow furrowed deep. “The other mother?”
If the person in front of her weren’t wearing a police uniform, Lan Ye would have called the cops herself.
Looking at the bewildered girl, Si Qing also felt like calling for backup. Where did this ignorant human come from…?
Regardless of whether the girl was playing dumb, Si Qing took out her phone, opened a basic physiological education video, and handed it to Lan Ye. “Didn’t you watch these films in school?”
Lan Ye took the phone hesitantly. A line of text flashed across the screen:
[This film is intended for physiological education for humans under 14 and Beastmen under 11.]
The three minute educational video clearly explained the physiological differences between humans and Beastmen, how they reproduce, the potential outcomes for offspring, and precautions for sexual activity.
In Lan Ye’s entire life, no three minutes had ever been like these. Every single second was overturning her entire worldview!
Three minutes later, Lan Ye looked at Si Qing in a daze. Her expression was blank, but the light in her eyes was trembling violently.
Si Qing didn’t understand the expression, it looked like she’d suffered a severe shock. She continued her duty: “Ma’am, where is the other Beastman? Are they also in the hospital?”
Under the circumstances, it was best to speak with the family’s Beastman.
Lan Ye shook her head instinctively. “I don’t know…”
She pinched herself hard. The pain confirmed this wasn’t a dream.
“How… I’m pregnant? With a cat? Whose is it?”
Is today really not April Fool’s? Is some TV show pranking me? Lan Ye started looking around for hidden cameras.
Hearing Lan Ye’s words, Si Qing was shocked. “You don’t know who the Beastman who got you pregnant is?”
Lan Ye nodded instinctively.
This was a serious problem. Si Qing’s expression immediately turned grim. This was grave! If a Beastman had relations with this human without her knowledge, without even using contraception and forced the encounter against a human’s will, that was a capital offense!
Si Qing exchanged a look with her colleague. The doctor and nurse also traded glances. Everyone in the room except Lan Ye realized the severity of the situation.
They all looked at Lan Ye. A single possibility occurred to everyone. Lan Ye wasn’t lacking common sense or causing a disturbance, she genuinely had no idea she had been with a Beastman. That’s why she was asking how a human could give birth to a cat.
The little nurse cursed out loud: “It’s already Meow Era 2025! How can such a beast still exist? We must find this Beastman. Death Penalty!”
The doctor nodded in agreement.
Si Qing glanced at Lan Ye’s stomach and asked the doctor, “Is she far enough along for a DNA test?”
The doctor nodded. “Yes, the kitten is one month old.” However, matching it against the gene database required police authorization.
Si Qing had that authority. She asked the doctor to take Lan Ye for testing.
Lan Ye was in a daze as she cooperated with the tests. Her mind was a mess. To be honest, there weren’t many moments in her life that required this much brainpower. During the exam, she slowly began to piece things together.
Whether it was a Beastman or a human, she’d only had one sexual encounter in her life: that night at the beginning of the month.
So… it was that woman? A Beastman?
Beastman… Lan Ye thought of the old lady on the bus. So, she meant “Beastman,” not “Thin-man”?
The DNA results were expedited and came out in half an hour. Once Si Qing authorized the police terminal to log into the gene database, she saw the “100% Parent Child Match” notification.
Before Si Qing could even feel happy, she saw the name in the “Mother” column. Her heart rate instantly accelerated to 180 beats per minute!
Seeing her colleague leaning in to see the results, Si Qing immediately grabbed the police terminal and ran for the door.
“Oh, the signal in here is terrible! What’s going on? Wait a second, let me find a spot with better reception.”
Si Qing sprinted out of the reception room. Once she was far enough away, she whipped out her phone and dialed the number she had called this morning.
Thank God, she picked up quickly this time.
“Your Highness, where are you?” Si Qing asked, her voice trembling. Without waiting for Ju Lin to answer, she rushed on: “I finally know what kind of ‘big move’ that woman was planning!”
Ju Lin had just left the Feline Department and pressed the elevator button. Hearing this, she asked, “What woman?”
“The woman you’ve been looking for!”
Watching the elevator numbers jump, a light flickered in Ju Rin’s eyes. “You found her?”
Hearing this, Si Qing suddenly remembered when Ju Rin had asked her to find the person. She had asked how to handle her once found. At the time, Ju Rin said to lock her up first. Whether “locking her up” meant interrogation or a reunion, Ju Rin hadn’t specified.
She never expected the other party was also thinking of locking Ju Rin up. But these two versions of “locking up” were worlds apart. That human wanted Ju Rin locked in prison or even executed.
“Your Highness… we’re in trouble!” Si Qing looked around, trying her best to suppress her shaking voice. “You’re going to be a mother!”
With a ding, the elevator doors opened.
Ju Rin didn’t step inside. She stared at the mirror in the empty elevator that clearly reflected her image. The person in the mirror had a look of complete confusion in her amber eyes.
“Hmm?”
Physical Examination Center, Reception Room 5
After accepting the fact that she was pregnant, Lan Ye opened her backpack and started eating to calm her nerves. Lan Shan had freshly baked some pineapple buns this morning, because the physical required fasting, she was worried Lan Ye would be hungry and packed them for her.
As Lan Ye ate, she contemplated her situation. She was probably a “transmigrator.” And she had traveled to a rather extraordinary world. In this world, there weren’t just humans, but Beastmen too.
The one she slept with was a Beastman…
Lan Ye had questions. She had gone back to her own hotel, how did she end up sleeping with a Beastman from this world? Did she travel the moment she opened the door? What was that, a space time portal? She went from 2025 AD to “Meow Era” 2025 in a heartbeat.
She looked at the digital calendar in the room. Before, she thought “Meow Era” was just a cute way of saying things. It turns out, holy meow, it really is the Meow Era.
Lan Ye finally noticed another problem: on a human calendar, when does September ever have 31 days?!
Her chest felt tight and her head was itchy. Lan Ye took off her hat and carefully scratched the itchy wound on her head.
The officer accompanying Lan Ye was slightly surprised to see her buzz-cut style after she took off the hat. The doctor and nurse weren’t surprised; they had examined the wound during the check-up and knew she’d been in a serious car accident.
Now, both of them looked at Lan Ye with eyes full of pity.
Lan Ye didn’t notice. She was scratching her scalp, feeling torn. What do I do now…?
To give birth to this cat, or not…
She never expected to face such a dilemma. Was this something her small brain could figure out? It was a nightmare, she was a staunch believer in “non-marriage” she had never planned on having kids!
Besides, she was carrying a kitten. Was this “cat” the kind of cat she knew? What would it eat after it was born? Cat food? Was raising a cat in this world the same as she knew it?
Lan Ye had unconsciously already begun to imagine life after the kitten was born.
She finished one pineapple bun, took another from her bag, tore it open, and stuffed it into her mouth. She needed to keep calming her nerves; one bun wasn’t enough.
As she thought seriously about “giving birth to a cat” and ate with focus, she completely failed to notice the reception room door opening.
The atmosphere suddenly went silent.
By the time Lan Ye realized a very specific gaze was fixed on her, the person had already reached her.
Lan Ye looked up, her gaze crashing directly into a pair of amber eyes.
