- Chapter 16 - Soul Searching Interrogation
Ju Rin: “Then who have you slept with?”
The light from the phone fell into her amber eyes, illuminating the embarrassment within.
Ju Rin gripped the phone tightly, watching the successfully sent message. Her palms were actually seeping with a thin layer of sweat!
That was close… just a second away!
To prevent the other party from acting willfully, Ju Rin added another sentence:
【Refused!】
After sending the message, Ju Rin slapped the phone face-down on the vanity. Looking at herself in the mirror, she let out a long, heavy breath.
Her body, already warm from the bath, felt even hotter after this ordeal.
She pulled off the bath towel, grabbed a robe from the rack, and draped it over her shoulders. While tying the belt, she thought about that ridiculous human.
This human, ridiculous from morning till night!
Her tricks were never ending!
“Late night benefits…” Ju Rin looked into the mirror again, staring at her cheeks, which were flushed either from the steam or from being provoked by that human. She had only seen those four words on certain “special” websites…
Recalling the images she’d seen under those titles on the websites that automatically unlocked after she reached adulthood, Ju Rin breathed a sigh of immense relief. Luckily, she had finished her bath in time and seen the message in time…
She had no desire to receive any “late-night benefits”!
Ding~
The notification sound rang. Ju Rin finished tying her belt and picked up the phone again.
A new message had appeared in the chat:
【Subscription timeout, refusal failed. Late night benefits continuing to send.】
Snap!
The moment the photo popped up, Ju Rin slammed the phone face-down onto the vanity!
The crisp sound was a clear indicator to the owner that the screen had likely cracked.
Ju Rin felt as though her vision was about to crack as well. No matter how fast her reflexes were, they couldn’t beat the processing speed of her eyesight. She had still seen it…
A fleeting glimpse. She couldn’t tell which part of the body it was, but she was certain that the flash of snowy white was skin…
Bare skin, without any covering…
That human actually sent her a nude photo!
Ding~ Ding~ Ding~
Messages kept coming in. Ju Rin stared at the phone beneath her palm as if she were looking at a grenade that was highly likely to explode.
Normally, one should throw a bomb far away, but this wasn’t a normal bomb.
Or rather, the person throwing the bomb wasn’t normal!
With that kind of logic, if put on a battlefield, the enemy would definitely be unable to predict her next move.
Ju Rin was worried she would take even more private photos and forcibly send them as “benefits.” She had to stop her.
Taking a deep breath, Ju Rin picked up the phone again. As expected, the screen was fractured with several deep and shallow cracks.
She unlocked it. The screen lit up.
Ju Rin averted her gaze slightly and looked over very cautiously. Indeed, the human had sent more messages.
The dense wall of text had pushed the photo upward, leaving only a tiny bit visible. Ju Rin sighed in relief and looked at the screen properly.
【Late-night benefits sent. Please check promptly.】
【Want to unlock more late-night benefits?】
【Limited time offer, give me a kiss and unlock immediately.】
【Better to act than be tempted! Pick up your phone and call the streamer now~】
Ju Rin: “…”
What on earth was inside this human’s brain?
The next second, another message arrived.
【Is this enough? You’re too easily satisfied~】
Ju Rin: “…”
A breath caught in her chest, unable to go up or down. Her mental energy, which had been calmed by medication, began to fluctuate irritably again.
An idea popped into Ju Rin’s mind: kidnap that human, tie her to this bed, and ask her if she has any sense of shame.
Her temper rising, Ju Rin swiped the screen. Fine, she would see exactly what this human had sent.
If she dared to send it, Ju Rin dared to look.
Swiping up, the first thing visible in the photo was a toe. Ju Rin frowned. She didn’t even spare the toes… did she take a full body shot?
She continued to scroll up.
When the entire photo was finally revealed, her face turned completely dark.
Ding~
A new message popped up.
【Right? My feet are so pretty, white and tender. Don’t you want to take a bite?】
Ju Rin’s temples throbbed. The frustration in her chest began to swell.
Late night benefits… a single foot…
This human!
Realizing she had been played once again, Ju Rin clicked the photo and deleted it permanently.
Ding~
【Remember to save your benefit fragments! One piece per night. Soon you’ll have a complete benefit photo~】
Lan Ye was clutching her watch, laughing uncontrollably. She could already imagine the speechless expression on the other side.
Little thing, you think I can’t handle you?
She knew the other woman wasn’t asleep yet. Not replying to messages? Look how easily I baited you out.
A nude? Hmph, she wouldn’t just send those out casually.
Benefits like that the other party would have to beg for them on their knees.
Beep beep~
A reply came back. Lan Ye stopped laughing to check it.
Lin: 【Not needed.】
This little tsundere. Lan Ye’s eyes sparkled with amusement. She didn’t believe it for a second. Thinking back to that so-called “advance goodnight kiss” earlier tonight, she said she wouldn’t kiss, yet she chased her after she got out of the car to do it anyway.
This kind of tsundere is all “no, no” with their mouth, but their body is very honest.
When she kissed her, she didn’t even dodge.
Tsk tsk.
Lan Ye called her directly.
Ju Rin looked at the caller ID, hesitated for a few seconds, and then picked up.
“If you don’t want benefit photos, what do you want?”
Lan Ye went straight to the point: “Is it a kiss you want?”
Without waiting for Rin’s response, Lan Ye laughed generously and said, “No problem! Mua~ one on the left cheek, mua~ one on the right, mua-mua~ one on the mouth. Is that enough, kiddo?”
Ju Rin felt like the breath stuck in her chest had moved to her throat. When she tried to speak, she burst into a fit of coughing.
“Still not enough? Fine, mua~ mua~ mua~ mua~ mua~”
“Enough!”
Ju Rin, having caught her breath, hurriedly stopped her.
Lan Ye: “It took that many to be enough? You really are a greedy little kitty~”
Ju Rin: “…”
She just wanted the woman to shut up. That “enough” didn’t mean “that’s the right amount”…
She really wanted to block her.
“Something the matter?” Ju Rin didn’t want to continue this topic. If she followed this human’s train of thought, she’d always be the one left speechless.
“If there’s nothing, I’m hanging up.”
She needed to calm down. At the same time, she suspected something was wrong with the medicine the vet gave her. She had taken it on the way back, yet her mental energy was acting up again.
“There’s something, of course there’s something.” Lan Ye had called for a reason. The jokes were over; it was time for business.
“What is it?”
Lan Ye lay back on the bed, placing the watch near her face and cushioning her head with her free hands.
“Look, we’re married now. Shouldn’t we start doing something next?”
“Hm?” Ju Rin walked out of the bathroom toward the window.
Lan Ye: “Have you ever read ‘marriage first, love later’ novels? It’s time to start cultivating feelings.”
Ju Rin sat in the chair by the window. She was about to use a towel to dry her damp hair, but her hand paused.
Marriage first, love later… cultivating feelings…
“How do we cultivate them?”
Lan Ye sounded like an expert: “By getting to know each other, of course.”
Ju Rin: “And?”
Lan Ye: “And so, I have some questions for you.”
Hearing this, Ju Rin glanced at the moon outside. She thought to herself that the human finally couldn’t hold back anymore and wanted to fish for information.
She wondered what she wanted to know.
Ju Rin loosened her grip on the towel. “Ask.”
Lan Ye rolled over on the bed, looking at the empty half beside her. She asked a question that would definitely come up once they lived together.
“Do you snore when you sleep?”
Ju Rin: “…I don’t.”
“How do you know? Who have you slept with? Who proved you don’t snore?”
Ju Rin: “…”
Do you really need to sleep with someone to know that? Thinking about it… it seemed so.
Then she really wasn’t sure.
“What about you?”
Lan Ye: “I don’t.”
Ju Rin: “Then who have you slept with?”
Lan Ye: “I was a vegetable.”
“The hospital staff all knew I didn’t snore. But maybe the vegetative state is special. Now that I’m awake, I’m not sure if I do. If I snore, will you be unable to sleep?”
Hearing Lan Ye mention being a “vegetable,” Ju Rin recalled the files Si Qing had sent her before her bath.
She already knew about Lan Ye’s car accident, but since the woman brought it up herself, Ju Rin pretended not to know.
“A vegetable?”
Lan Ye felt unlucky just thinking about it. “I’m telling you, that morning, I saw you were still sleeping. I had something to do and wanted to go and come back quickly. But as soon as I stepped out, I got hit. I ended up in a vegetative state. Otherwise, I definitely would have come back for you. By the way, were you anxious when you woke up and didn’t see me?”
This brought Ju Rin’s memory back to that morning. When she woke up, there was no one in the safe house.
At first, she thought it was a dream.
Because at that time, she had just completed a life or death mission. Her mental energy was severely damaged, and she was temporarily blind. She could only see blurry patches of light. After confirming the safe house was empty, she assumed the previous night was a dream.
A very realistic dream… it felt like the sensation of that person’s touch was still on her face.
She remembered she was in a lot of pain. Her rampaging mental energy felt like it was going to swallow her consciousness. The heat in her body felt like it was roasting her. Just as she was on the brink of collapse, she felt a wave of coolness.
A hand was pressed against her face, and a gentle voice was asking her, “What’s wrong?”
She was in such agony from the heat that she gripped that hand tightly.
Like a person dying of thirst finding water.
It seemed like that… a primal plea for help that made things even worse. Her mental energy went completely out of control. She only remembered calling out her name.
A very familiar voice. Miraculously, she calmed down. When she fell back into sleep, she used all her strength to restrain the person. It was a subconscious instinct, she couldn’t let this person leave.
But when she woke in the morning, she was alone in the safe house.
Her heart had been racing. A sense of panic she didn’t understand occupied her entire heart.
She knelt on the floor, breathing with difficulty. It felt like she had experienced this panic once before, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t remember what she had to be panicked about.
Finally, it was only after she found something on the bed that didn’t belong to her that she realized it wasn’t a dream or a hallucination. Most of that mysterious panic vanished.
She had Si Qing look for the person.
After her eyes recovered, she checked the surveillance herself. There were no signs of a break-in, but the cameras simply didn’t capture anyone entering or leaving the safe house.
The biological security system hadn’t been compromised either.
That person had appeared out of thin air and disappeared into thin air.
“Hey, did you fall asleep?”
Lan Ye held the watch closer to her ear. Having heard no response for a long time, she called out, “Lin, are you listening?”
“Yes.”
Ju Rin snapped back to reality.
After Lan Ye mentioned that morning, she realized it wasn’t an appropriate topic. If they kept talking, the other woman might ask how she got into the room.
She had already said it, she just opened the door and walked in. No one believed her.
If she said “time travel,” they’d probably think she was crazy.
Better not to bring it up again. Let them think she had some incredible ability.
Lan Ye continued: “Next question.”
Ju Rin listened as the human abruptly changed the subject. She felt there was definitely something suspicious about what happened back then, but clearly, this human wasn’t going to tell the truth.
If Lan Ye knew what she was thinking, she’d cry foul. She had been telling the truth the whole time.
“Double bed, which side do you usually sleep on?”
Ju Rin looked at the single pillow on her bed. “The middle.”
Lan Ye: “That won’t work. If you sleep in the middle, where will I sleep?”
“Hm?”
Lan Ye: “We’re definitely going to sleep together in the future. How about this. I’ll take the left, you take the right.”
Ju Rin: “…” She had never even considered this problem.
She looked at the only bed in the room and could almost see the human lying there…
Maybe she could add another bed.
Ju Rin nodded to herself, feeling she had found a solution.
Before she could suggest it, the voice on the phone asked a new question.
“Who’s cooking in the future?”
Ju Rin: “Cooking?”
Lan Ye: “I can’t cook, so you do it.”
Ju Rin: “…” Can I?
“Who’s doing the laundry?”
Ju Rin: “Laundry?”
Lan Ye: “I don’t like doing laundry, so you do it.”
Ju Rin: “…” Do I like it?
“Do you leave your socks lying around?”
Finally, a question Ju Rin could answer immediately: “No.”
“I do. I think you won’t mind.”
Ju Rin: “…” I mind.
“Do you think cilantro smells like fragrance or stink?”
Ju Rin: “Huh?”
Through an hour of Q&A, Ju Rin’s brow never unfurrowed.
She had never encountered so many strange questions in her entire life.
She had originally thought this human was here to dig for information for her organization, but by the end, she felt the human was purely there to mess with her head.
Squeezing toothpaste from the bottom up, from the top, or just randomly? Can that even be called a question?
Squeeze it however you want.
If Lan Ye knew Ju Rin’s thoughts, she’d laugh at her lack of experience.
This was clearly a sign of not watching enough family dramas. The leads in those shows always fight over these exact details.
Two people living together is all about reconciling these details.
Lan Ye felt it was enough for one night. She let out a yawn.
She seemed to get sleepy right on schedule now. Despite napping all afternoon, her eyelids were starting to fight each other once the hour hit.
“That’s it for today. We’ll continue tomorrow night.”
Hearing there would be more tomorrow, Ju Rin’s eyelids twitched.
“I’m going to sleep. You were right, pregnant women really do seem to be extra sleepy.”
Ju Rin, who was about to say something else, closed her mouth. She remembered the files said pregnant women need plenty of sleep.
“Okay… goodnight.”
“Mm, goodnight… thinking that I’ll see you tomorrow… I…”
The sentence cut off halfway.
