After Becoming a Spare Tire, I Got Together with My White Moonlight - Chapter 50.2
“Aren’t you the least bit curious?” Jiang Xuyu leaned in to ask her instead.
“Curious about what?” Yan Guiqiu retorted.
“About the things between Xuehe and me,” Jiang Xuyu said.
“Half and half.” Yan Guiqiu gestured with her hand. “I’m only interested in the part about Sister Xuehe. If it’s something she can share, she’ll tell me herself someday.”
Jiang Xuyu: “…”
Was he being disliked?
“You really trust her,” Jiang Xuyu said, somewhat disgruntled.
Yan Guiqiu’s face was practically screaming “no shit,” and she even gave Jiang Xuyu a surprised glance. “Who else would I believe if not my girlfriend? You?”
Jiang Xuyu, who had been rejected twice: “…”
Jiang Xuehe smiled from the side and said, “Let’s go together. We can have dinner at the farmhouse restaurant in the suburbs tonight. I’ll call to reserve a table later so we don’t have to make an extra trip.”
Only then did Yan Guiqiu nod.
Jiang Xuyu chimed in from behind them, “No need to be so hostile toward me. I don’t like women, and I don’t oppose your relationship either. In fact, I think it might save you a lot of trouble if you two got married and registered as soon as possible.”
Yan Guiqiu asked, “Why?”
Jiang Xuyu said, “You probably already know that she has a very troublesome mother. Her whole family is extremely homophobic except for your girlfriend. And honestly, your family background is pretty good.”
He paused, glancing at Jiang Xuehe to make sure she wasn’t angry before continuing.
“In case her mother or brother takes a liking to you, they might use visiting Xuehe as an excuse to hit on you.”
Yan Guiqiu: ???
Jiang Xuyu added, “So I suggest you two get married early, cutting off any possibility of them getting ideas.”
Even after being ushered into the car by Jiang Xuehe, Yan Guiqiu still wore a stunned and bewildered expression.
Just moments ago, she had been worrying about how to tactfully refuse if Mrs. Jiang kept pestering her for A Luan’s contact information, hoping she could set A Luan up with Jiang Xueyang.
How had she suddenly become one of the targets herself?
But since Jiang Xuyu had said so, it couldn’t be baseless speculation or wild imagination.
Once Yan Guiqiu processed this, she instinctively turned to look at Jiang Xuehe.
Jiang Xuyu added from the back, “Something like this has happened before.”
Jiang Xuehe supplemented, “It was a former classmate of mine.”
This happened when Jiang Xuehe was still attending university in China. One of her classmates came from a well-off family, even more affluent than the Jiangs, but she was straightforward and sincere. On the first day of school, Jiang Xuehe helped her with a small favor, and from then on, they interacted frequently, gradually becoming good friends.
When Mrs. Jiang brought her son to visit her daughter at the university, they happened to run into this classmate.
Jiang Xueyang was particularly drawn to delicate, refined looks, and he developed a slight crush on her at first sight. However, it was merely a superficial attraction, and he didn’t make much of it. But when Mrs. Jiang learned about the classmate’s family background, she became exceptionally enthusiastic. Sensing her son’s interest, she encouraged him to pursue her.
In principle, there’s nothing inherently wrong with a brother developing feelings for his sister’s friend and trying to win her over as long as it’s consensual.
The problem was, this classmate already had a boyfriend. In fact, she had gotten engaged shortly after starting university, though they were in a long-distance relationship and couldn’t see each other often.
At the time, Jiang Xuehe wasn’t particularly sensitive to romantic matters and was still somewhat naive. Seeing her mother and brother show her warmth and concern again made her happy, so she didn’t think too critically about their intentions.
As for the classmate having a boyfriend, Jiang Xuehe knew that her brother and mother were aware of it from the very beginning.
Because during their first meeting, the classmate had just stepped out to receive a large bouquet of red roses delivered by her boyfriend.
When Jiang Xuehe went to pick up her brother and mother, she happened to be on the same route as her classmate. They ran into each other and exchanged greetings, even chatting about the flowers her classmate’s fiancé had sent her.
Mrs. Jiang had covered her mouth and laughed teasingly at the time, saying how romantic young people were.
Naturally, Jiang Xuehe didn’t think much of it. It was only when her brother mentioned the classmate a few too many times that she reminded him again that the girl was engaged.
Later, they stopped bringing it up as often. Jiang Xuehe thought she might have been overthinking things and even felt a little guilty.
But in reality, they hadn’t given up. Eventually, they went behind Jiang Xuehe’s back and used her name to invite that classmate out, but only Jiang Xueyang showed up.
Jiang Xuehe was kept completely in the dark until the classmate lashed out at her, finally revealing the whole story.
When she returned home, Mrs. Jiang preemptively blamed Jiang Xuehe for not considering her brother’s feelings, adding that since the girl wasn’t married yet, everyone had the right to pursue true love.
But faced with Jiang Xuehe’s cold expression, she knew she was in the wrong. After a lot of bluster, she covered her face and started crying, acting as if Jiang Xuehe had bullied her.
Mr. Jiang, as always, sided with his wife unconditionally and proceeded to lecture Jiang Xuehe.
By then, the family’s relationships had already begun to grow increasingly strained. That incident was just one small episode among many.
But countless such episodes piled up, gradually forming a deep, unhealable rift.
In the end, Jiang Xuehe apologized to her classmate, but they cut ties completely. After that, Jiang Xuehe never mentioned any of her friends at home again.
Of course, that became the one and only time.
Before Jiang Xuyu brought it up, Jiang Xuehe hadn’t even considered the possibility.
For one, the Yan family and the Jiang family didn’t have much interaction. Mrs. Jiang’s ambitions were still fixed on families like the Luans. For another, Jiang Xuehe had publicly declared Yan Guiqiu as her girlfriend, it should go without saying that she preferred women, not men.
But Jiang Xueyang was no longer young, and the Yan family had been thriving in recent years. With the future head of the family likely to be a woman, in Mrs. Jiang’s eyes, this was indeed an easy target to manipulate.
And besides, they had a track record.
Jiang Xuehe glanced at Jiang Xuyu through the rearview mirror but refrained from poking at his sore spot in front of him.
The hotel was in a rather remote location. For the latter half of the journey, the three of them rode in silence until they reached the hotel entrance.
Jiang Xuyu got out of the car, saying he wanted to go back and take a shower first. He suggested that if they were bored, they could take a walk around the area.
