After Becoming a Scummy Alpha, the Movie Queen Just Wants to Pamper Her Wife - Chapter 82
On Sunday night, just before bed, Meng Chuwu remembered she had left her phone in the living room.
“Yanyan, I’m going downstairs to grab my phone,” she said.
“Oh, I’ll wait for you, sister.” Xi Xiaoyan had a look on her face as if she had something to say.
“Mhm. I’ll be right back.” Meng Chuwu nodded and turned to leave the room.
As she went downstairs, she realized she hadn’t seen the little kitten since they returned from the orchard.
Everyone in the house had grown accustomed to Athena’s elusive nature appearing and disappearing like a phantom.
As Xi Xiaoyan once put it, “Ah Xi is the legendary kind of kitten that just can’t be tamed!”
Meng Chuwu had laughed and replied, “Maybe Ah Xi has a lot of things to do.”
She remembered the kitten mentioning that her mission in this world was nearly complete.
In the living room, she picked up her phone from the coffee table and flipped through the photos they had taken together in the orchard a few days ago. There were many pictures of the two of them with the kitten, taken by Chen Lanying, the scenes looked peaceful and warm.
As if reminiscing about an old friend, Meng Chuwu unconsciously called out in her heart before leaving the living room, “Athena!”
Unexpectedly, a soft “meow” answered, and the kitten appeared.
Tonight was the only time Athena wasn’t wearing anything around her neck.
Meng Chuwu teased, “Ah Xi, have you abandoned your refined aesthetic?”
The kitten didn’t answer. Instead, she padded over to Meng Chuwu’s feet, gently rubbing her head against her, letting out soft, adorable meows.
Meng Chuwu bent down, set her phone back on the coffee table, picked up Athena, and sat down on the sofa.
It wasn’t even ten yet still early.
“Where have you been these past few days? We’ve missed you.” Meng Chuwu had a feeling that their chances to see the kitten would grow fewer and fewer.
“I have other work to do, okay?! Not like you, a rich, beautiful woman with a gorgeous wife and sweet love. You’ve got way too many buffs!”
“So, you’ve received a new mission?”
“Mhm, I have several tasks on hand.”
“Can you tell me about the other missions?” Meng Chuwu wasn’t in a hurry to go back upstairs.
“Even if I tell you, you can’t see them. Even if I point them out, you can’t touch them. There’s nothing to say, really!” The kitten lazily sprawled in Meng Chuwu’s arms. Among all her partners, Meng Chuwu was one of the most level-headed.
Though she had been overly cautious before signing the contract, requiring a lot of persuasion, overall, she was honest, gentle, considerate, and mentally very healthy her embrace was warm too. She was an excellent partner, even offering to share half her wealth. What a lovely woman!
Meng Chuwu figured work might be a topic Athena couldn’t discuss, so she didn’t press further. Instead, she gently stroked the kitten’s back and said, “Can’t I just want to know more about you, Ah Xi?”
“You called me here late at night just to get to know me?”
“No, it’s just, it’s been a while since we last saw each other. I missed you, my old friend.”
“Meng Chuwu, we’ve known each other for less than four months!”
“But it feels like so much longer. It seems like so much has happened recently!”
“Well, a lot has happened.”
“Will we be seeing less and less of you from now on, Ah Xi?”
“Now that you and Xi Xiaoyan have a stable relationship, so deeply in love like glue and lacquer, there’s no reason for me to stay anymore!”
“Can I still summon you anytime?”
“Of course. But now, you’re no longer my top priority. If you summon me in the future and I don’t appear right away, it means I’m on another mission.”
“I see.”
“Focus on nurturing your relationship with Xi Xiaoyan, and don’t cause me any trouble, okay?”
“So, if we have problems, it becomes your trouble, right?”
Athena didn’t answer. Instead, she nuzzled against Meng Chuwu. “Meng Chuwu, you really are such a warm person. Being friends with you is so comfortable.”
“Axi is also a wonderful friend.”
Amidst this almost performative flattery, Meng Chuwu once again sensed the undertones of farewell.
She knew Athena couldn’t stay in this world forever after all, the little kitten wasn’t her true form. So, despite her reluctance, she didn’t show too much emotion, only murmuring lightly, “I really wonder what Athena’s true form looks like. By the way, is it human?”
“Meng Chuwu, I have to ask, is that polite?” The kitten’s tiny paws tapped Meng Chuwu’s arm symbolically, with a touch lighter than a tickle.
“You’ve never told me before!”
“Exactly the same as a human.”
“Axi, while you’re still young, go fall in love too. Don’t end up like me, focusing only on work and ending up with nothing.”
“But you have Xi Xiaoyan now, don’t you?”
“Ah, speaking of that,” Meng Chuwu suddenly remembered the letter again. “Axi, can information from books also travel to other worlds?”
“Well!” Athena lifted her head and looked at Meng Chuwu. “It’s possible.”
“But seven or eight years ago, this novel didn’t even exist yet!”
“What on earth are you talking about?!”
“It was around my second year after debut. I received a strange and sorrowful letter. Several times, I suspected it was written by Xi Xiaoyan.”
“Then why don’t you just ask her?”
“The content is too sensitive. It’s not easy to bring up. The consequences of making my wife angry would be severe.”
“Are you that whipped?”
“You’re the one who said I should spoil my wife more to live a smoother, healthier life.”
“Even though this novel didn’t exist seven or eight years ago, the condensed world within the text has incredible expansiveness. Some of its settings might escape, and once that happens, they become uncontrollable by reality, space, or thought extending in all directions. In other words, if information from the book escapes, it could spread to the past, the future, or other dimensions.”
“Sounds impressive, though I don’t fully understand.”
“Of course it’s impressive!”
“Isn’t there any rule to it?”
“Escapes are extremely rare! Generally, each world is relatively independent and doesn’t interfere with others, but there are always exceptions.”
“I see.” Meng Chuwu had initially thought the possibility of Xi Xiaoyan writing the letter was slim, but now, it seemed more plausible.
About half an hour later, Athena said she had to leave.
For the first time, Meng Chuwu walked her to the gate. “Axi, take good care of yourself!”
“Meng Chuwu, goodbye!” Athena, accustomed to all kinds of farewells, left with an air of effortless grace.
Meng Chuwu stood at the door, watching her until the tiny figure of the cat grew smaller and smaller in the night, eventually disappearing completely into the darkness.
As she went upstairs, she checked the time, it was almost half past ten.
Xi Xiaoyan should be asleep by now. With that thought, she felt a pang of guilt. About twenty minutes earlier, Xi Xiaoyan had sent her two messages, both asking why she had been gone for so long.
Meng Chuwu had been busy chatting with Athena. Though she heard the notification of the incoming messages, she hadn’t checked them.
The moment she pushed the door open, she remembered the look Xi Xiaoyan had given her earlier as if she had something to say. Maybe—
Sure enough, Xi Xiaoyan wasn’t asleep. She was leaning against the headboard, reading a book.
Her posture suggested she wasn’t so much reading as waiting for Meng Chuwu to return.
Meng Chuwu closed the door behind her, walked to the bedside, and placed her phone on the nightstand.
As she climbed into bed, she said, “A-Xi came back earlier. I played with her in the living room for a while.”
Xi Xiaoyan also set her book down on the nightstand. “Why didn’t you bring her up, Wu-jie? It feels like it’s been almost half a month since we last saw her!”
“The little kitten ran off again!”
“A-Xi really isn’t used to being confined, is she? Such a free-spirited little cat!”
As she spoke, Xi Xiaoyan nestled softly into Meng Chuwu’s embrace.
The two lay entwined, their body heat quickly weaving a sweet, intimate atmosphere.
“Yanyan, why aren’t you asleep yet?”
Normally, by half past ten, if they weren’t doing that, she would have been fast asleep.
Meng Chuwu rested her chin lightly on Xi Xiaoyan’s head, the familiar scent relaxing her instantly.
The melancholy left by Athena’s departure gradually dissipated, replaced by Xi Xiaoyan’s warmth and fragrance.
Instead of answering, Xi Xiaoyan asked, “Wu-jie, do you remember what I told you a couple of days ago? That there was something I needed to sort out before I could talk to you about it?”
Her voice pressed against Meng Chuwu’s chest, her breath warm and teasing, sending ripples through Meng Chuwu’s heart.
Meng Chuwu couldn’t resist the temptation and had to shift back slightly before replying, “I remember.”
Pressed so close, it was hard to talk properly, but unlike usual, Xi Xiaoyan didn’t chase after her as Meng Chuwu retreated.
“I’ve sorted it out now. What I’m about to say might be a little shocking, so Wu-jie, try not to get too excited, okay?”
“Just how shocking are we talking?”
Meng Chuwu kept her expression calm, but inside, her heart had already exploded once. After what Athena had said about certain settings in this world possibly escaping, she had already concluded that the letter must have been written by Xi Xiaoyan. So, did she really have an older sister from next door?!
“Wu-jie, you’re putting on an act!” Xi Xiaoyan tilted her head back slightly so she could look into Meng Chuwu’s eyes.
“In Yanyan’s eyes, is your sister the kind of person who likes to put on an act?”
“Sometimes,” Xi Xiaoyan pursed her lips, her eyes twinkling with amusement. “Like right now.”
“You’re really throwing me for a loop here! You haven’t even.”
Xi Xiaoyan’s finger suddenly pressed against Meng Chuwu’s lips. “Wu-jie, may I ask did I throw you?”
Her mischievous grin sent another wave of fluttering through Meng Chuwu.
“Oh, Xi Xiaoyan, you’ve learned to be naughty!”
“Isn’t it all,” Xi Xiaoyan’s smile grew even more playful, “, thanks to your excellent teaching, sister?”
“I never taught you to say things like that, much less to throw me!”
“But Wu-jie, you were the one who just said I was throwing you for a loop.”
Unable to bear it any longer, Meng Chuwu suddenly reached out and tickled Xi Xiaoyan under her ribs. The ticklish Xiaoyan let out a sharp “Ah!” and scooted even farther away.
“Still dare to tease me?!” Meng Chuwu threatened, wiggling her fingers toward Xiaoyan’s sensitive spots.
“Sister Wu is the worst!” Xiaoyan pouted, barely suppressing her laughter.
“Now hurry up and tell me your shocking secret!”
“Ah, well,” Xiaoyan half-closed her eyes, her long lashes veiling their bright gleam. “Didn’t Sister Wu ask me the other day if I’d ever used the username ‘Forgotten in the Rivers and Lakes’?”
“You already mentioned that.”
“That username, I started using it not long after my differentiation failed.”
“You said that too, and that you used it for years.”
“Sister Wu, you’re so annoying!” Xiaoyan pouted again.
The conversation wasn’t going as she’d expected. She had thought bringing this up would prompt Meng Chuwu to ask about the letter.
But instead, she wore that infuriating expression I remember, but I’m not going to ask if it was you who wrote me that letter.
If she had just asked outright, this would have been so much easier.
Xiaoyan could tell that ever since that day, Meng Chuwu had firmly adopted the attitude of You have the right to keep whatever secrets you want. It made her feel a little awkward.
“Whatever Xiaoyan wants to say, just say it directly, like before. I promise I won’t laugh at you.”
“Oh!” Xiaoyan’s lashes lifted as she met Meng Chuwu’s gaze again. “Sister Wu didn’t actually dream about my username, did you?”
So blunt! Meng Chuwu faltered. “So?”
“That social platform allowed duplicate usernames, but the person who wrote Sharing a Secret with My Beloved Sister Wu that was me!”
Ah, so it was her! The boulder in Meng Chuwu’s heart instantly vanished. If this was true, then the bond between Xiaoyan and her had begun nearly as early, if not earlier than her history with that scumbag Alpha.
Now, their connection suddenly stretched back seven or eight years.
Meng Chuwu secretly rejoiced, forgetting even to ask about the “neighbor sister” mentioned in the letter something she had been curious about before.
“Sorry,” she said.
“Why is Sister Wu apologizing again?”
“Sorry for lying to you that day.”
“Shouldn’t I be the one apologizing? Sister Wu brought it up, but I stubbornly dodged the topic. I know you didn’t press me because you were worried I didn’t want to talk about it. You always leave me room like that so gentle and considerate!”
“I didn’t ask also because I wasn’t sure. I’d forgotten most of the details in the letter. All I remembered was the username ‘Forgotten in the Rivers and Lakes’ and that the writer was a heartbroken high schooler whose dreams had shattered.”
“Hmph!” Xiaoyan wasn’t buying it. Meng Chuwu had an excellent memory, and her expression now practically screamed Tell me who your neighbor sister was! “Sister Wu is lying again!”
This time, she mercilessly called her out.
“How am I lying?” Meng Chuwu’s face burned.
“If you remembered the letter, there’s no way you forgot what that high schooler’s dream was, right?!”
“I really forgot.” She stubbornly clung to her story.
“Faker! Faker!” Xiaoyan grew a little agitated. Dishonesty was the worst.
“Alright then,” Seeing her upset, Meng Chuwu didn’t press further. “Yanyan, aren’t you going to tell your sister about your neighbor sister?”
“I will!” Xi Xiaoyan pouted slightly.
Seizing the moment, Meng Chuwu leaned in and planted a quick kiss on her.
Instantly, Xi Xiaoyan’s mood lifted again.
“Go on, tell me about your explosive secret.”
“The explosive secret is, I never had a neighbor sister. From the very beginning, the only sister in my heart has been you, Wu-jie. At first, I was absolutely determined to marry you. But after my first differentiation failure, my emotions became extremely unstable during that period. I was convinced that loving you would lead nowhere. The failure made me overly sensitive and insecure.
“I even changed the nickname on my social media account, hoping that a new name would help me forget you and let go of what seemed like a hopeless dream.
“Of course, it didn’t work. Changing my nickname did nothing so, to truly move on from you, I wrote that letter. Back then, I didn’t have the courage to confess outright that you were my dream. So, I disguised you as a neighbor sister looking back now, I was such a silly, overly sensitive girl!”
Xi Xiaoyan laughed at herself, lowering her eyes. “And that’s not all. To forget you, I deliberately chose a university far away in the northern country. But well, forgetting you was impossible, and letting go just didn’t happen. Eventually, I made peace with myself. Even if I couldn’t marry you, I thought, at least I could admire you from afar.”
Meng Chuwu’s heart ached listening to her. It really was a deeply suppressed past.
She quickly interrupted Xi Xiaoyan. “Sister thanks you, Yanyan!”
Xi Xiaoyan looked puzzled.
Meng Chuwu explained, “Thank you for never forgetting me and never letting go of me. Otherwise—”
This time, it was Xi Xiaoyan who cut her off. “Wu-jie and I were always destined to be deeply connected.”
“Absolutely, deeply connected!”
Otherwise, that letter wouldn’t have traveled so far back in time.
According to Athena, the book had only been written this year, yet Meng Chuwu had received Xi Xiaoyan’s letter over seven or eight years ago.
She couldn’t explain this to Xi Xiaoyan, nor did it matter to her.
The most important thing was that Meng Chuwu had received her letter.
At the time, she was temporarily idle at home due to a contract dispute. After reading the letter, she had replied sincerely.
Though her response was brief, it was heartfelt.
“Wu-jie, you didn’t forget that you replied to my email, did you?”
“Of course not!”
“Thank you, Wu-jie. Though it came many years late, now that we’re talking about it, I must sincerely thank you. Your email encouraged me during that time. Even though I didn’t fully recover from the despair of my shattered dream, your reply gave me the greatest comfort after my differentiation failure.”
“Really? I had no idea.”
“Yes!” Xi Xiaoyan smiled. “After reading your reply, I even thought about confessing to you after high school graduation. But—”
“Why didn’t you come? Why didn’t you?!”
Meng Chuwu said this, but her heart screamed the opposite: Thank goodness you didn’t, thank goodness you didn’t!
If Xi Xiaoyan had actually gone to confess, she would’ve likely been heartbroken by that scumbag Alpha long ago.
Perhaps this is what good fate looks like though fraught with trials, everything falls perfectly into place in the end, and nothing comes too late.
“Sister Wu!” Xi Xiaoyan giggled sweetly.
“Yanyan, I really want to thank you. For persisting in liking me for so long you’ve worked hard.”
“Sister Wu, liking you was never hard for me. If I ever wavered before, it was only because of the darkness in my heart!”
“Liking someone and having expectations is completely natural!” Meng Chuwu’s tone was uncharacteristically serious. “I don’t encourage love that asks for nothing in return because we’re only human. Selfless love is for saints. So, your occasional doubts weren’t darkness, they were reasonable, basic hopes. Wanting to be cherished and loved by the person you like is human nature. Only love that isn’t taken for granted is treasured! In short, every kind of love deserves a response, deserves to be cherished!”
“Sister Wu, that’s exactly what you wrote to me in your letter back then!”
“Really?”
“The letters you sent me, I think I still have them in my room. I printed them out before. I’ll look for them another day and show you.”
“Better not,” Meng Chuwu felt a little embarrassed. When comforting someone, it was easy to spout empty platitudes. “I’d much rather read that letter you wrote me again.”
“Oh, that one” Xi Xiaoyan paused. “I didn’t keep a copy!”
Such cringeworthy content Sister Wu, you’re better off forgetting it.
Meng Chuwu could tell she was embarrassed too, so she didn’t press her. Instead, she sighed softly but firmly and said, “Yanyan and I were destined to be together!”
“Mhm!” Xi Xiaoyan nodded emphatically.
Silence suddenly settled over them.
After a while, Xi Xiaoyan murmured, “At a time like this, Sister Wu should kiss me.”
Meng Chuwu kissed her.
Xi Xiaoyan added, “Sister Wu, you can kiss me a few more times.”
Obediently, Meng Chuwu kissed her several times.
“Sister Wu, can’t you take the initiative a little? Please don’t make me say and do everything!”
“What?” Meng Chuwu felt that doing that right now would kind of ruin the sacredness of their fated connection.
“Count how many days it’s been since we last did that? We’ve only been married for a short while, and already we’re in a dead bedroom!”
“Dead bedroom? What’s that?”
Frustrated, Xi Xiaoyan rolled over, turning her back to her.
Meng Chuwu picked up her phone from the nightstand and looked it up. Instantly, her face darkened.
Setting the phone down, she wrapped her arms around Xi Xiaoyan from behind.
And with actions, she shattered her misunderstanding about their current situation.
She put in even more effort than the night of their permanent mark. A lot more.
In the end, Xi Xiaoyan was reduced to tearful pleas for mercy.
Meng Chuwu was satisfied (and redeemed).
